Joe,

I feel the same way about my Soma Lauterwasser bars, which would look great on
that beautiful Pashley of yours. I want to like them but just don’t. I wonder
how much your bars are similar to those? I’ve yet to try anything close to
those except my old flipped North Roads that I had on a Raleigh 3-speed.

[RBW] Re: Bottom Bracket?

2018-03-24 Thread Ron Mc
I've blown out one Campy Mirage sealed BB, but it was old, and I'm sure it
was due.
Don't forget SKF. I have SKF on 3 bikes, and Phil Wood on my '57 Lenton
frame.
Like them both, both are adjustable, but I have to say I like the SKF
better.

I think the SKF weather seals are superior, and I like using the shims to
adjust offset.
One advantage with Phil is you can get factory offset when you place your
order.

[RBW] Bottom Bracket?

2018-03-24 Thread ted
The generic cartridge units work just fine and last a long time. I use them and
have no complaints. I have a Phil on my simple one which let me fine tune the
chain line. Also no complaints. I’ve got a ti White industries unit on my ahh
which saves a few grams. Also no complaints.
Whether or not the pricier options are worth the extra dollars is really a
mater of personal opinion.

Whelp, here we are again. A Google search would probably bring up a half dozen
(at least) times I've tried Mustache Handlebars, then admitted they don't work
for me. Your turn!

Albastache 26.0: Bits of tape residue, a few squiggles, all will be under tape.
Technomic stem: Not new, not perfect, but serviceable.
Dia-Compe Blaze levers: Work well with cantis, these started on a Bstone RB-T
with said cantis, some fade on the logos but otherwise absurdly nice for
27-year-old levers.

$70 plus shipping for the whole schlamozzle, I'll get it boxed up and work on
some kinda not-ridiculous shipping cost.

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-24 Thread VeloVert

I went to Rivendell HQ yesterday and got a chance to ride the “new”
Atlantis size 56 & 650B wheels. The short ride on the closest bike trail
was nothing short of fantastic. It was my first time on a Rivendell
Atlantis and can’t compare it to the “shorter chainstay” ones but the new
Atlantis was super comfortable, stable and even zippy, yes zippy. At a slow
or higher speed the Atlantis was always very responsive and again so
comfortable/stable. In my size (56) I could see using comfortably either
drops or upright bars.

My take is that Grant, with all his knowledge and experience, took the
Atlantis to yet another level by adding (among other things) longer
chainstays with all the riding benefits they might offer.

The new Atlantis would make a wonderful all-rounder bike and this is how I
intend on using it. I’m sold and can’t wait for them to be available.

Big thank you to Grant, who seemed pretty busy when I got there, but took
the time to go over the bike with me and even had me try different
handlebars that might suit my personal needs. And thank you to Will who is
always so helpful.

The true bummer was that I really wanted one of their beautiful mugs but
they are out of stock…

Thanks. It's not a great frame anyways, some sort of pink 80s triathlon
frame, lugged but a unicrown fork. I should just set an ebay search for a
bleriot or San Marcos or nordavinden and be patient.

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-24 Thread phil k
I personally think the most convincing argument for shorter chainstay is
for ease of traveling. I commissioned a custom last year and forgot to
discuss chainstay length. They built my chainstay at around 46cm, and I was
horrified. My road bikes were usually in the 43-43.5cm. I thought my custom
was ruined. However, it rides great. Super stable. That's most likely not
just because of the chainstay length, but I personally didn't see a
detriment to any ride characteristics with 2.5cm of increase.

Maybe some cam really feel the difference in 1.3cm.

Well conversions are great when you can go from < 700x28 with no chance for
fenders to >650b x 33 with fenders. If you are still stuck with 28mm that
is going to lower the bottom bracket alot and the ability to run fenders
might not be worth the effort. I'm not sure I would even bother with a
conversion these days, given there are probably some great used 650b bikes
or off the rack Soma's available for cheap.

I keep my conversion bike around for sentimental reasons more than because
its a great 650b bike. For instance the Bleriot, San Marcos are better
bikes in my world view.

[RBW] Cheviot build - my first build, first Rivendell, and first RIDE (on it)! Would ride more but just adopted our baby girl =)

2018-03-24 Thread Pancake
Photos here because that's what I'd want to see first:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/0ifFpv218K6T4pmm2

Never built a bike from the frame up before but it turned out great! First
ride was two days ago and it was a dream! 26 miles, 1,800 feet of elevation
and would have been great to go longer

I have envied Rivendell bikes for a decade after trying to emulate them
with my Jamis Coda with Albatross bars. But several weeks ago my friend
gave me his old Cheviot frame (he got another) to build up and use as my
own (though he gets to ride it when he travels here to Napa or the Bay
Area). In part this was to distract me from the worries around a possible
adoption that we completed almost three weeks ago.

Here's my build list:
Component Price
DONATED Cheviot / Cheviut frame - orange
Tektro R559 Long Reach Road Calipers 55-73mm Silver Set $45.00
Tektro brake lever FL540 Canti/Clpr Black/Sliver

$24.99
Shimano RD-M591 Deore SGS Rear Derailleur (9-Speed, Long Cage)

$39.90
Shimano Front derailleur XD M781 3x10
 $25.65
Sun Race M96 Thumb Shifter, 9sp Friction - Right/Rear

$18.95
Sun Race M96 Thumb Shifter, 3sp Friction - Left/Front

$18.95
Sugino XD600 26/36/46 Triple Crankset

$105.36
Shimano Alivio HG400 9 Speed Cassette - CS-HG400-9 (11-36)

$32.38
KMC X9.93 9-Speed Chain (2x)
 $25.98
Yokozuna Shift Cable Housing Gray, 4' + 4 Ferrules plus extra length of
cable

$7.25
Yokozuna Brake Cable Housing, Gray, 4' + 4 Ferrules

$7.25
Rear Wheel 700c 36h Shimano Lx / Mavic A319 / Dt Champion silver

$107.81
Front wheel - donated Velocity Atlas / Shimano Deore XT
MKS Sylvan Prime Touring Pedals 9/16

$18.33
Velo Orange Chrome Half Clips, Pair

$13.92
Wald 137 basket

$15.95
Rear 135mm skewer - riv $10.00
Cinelli Cork Gel Handlebar tape - craigslist $8.00
Clear gorilla tape - replacing protective bits $3.26
Random brass bell from China, same as Riv's
 $3.00
SKS Longboard fenders - black - scrap
Albatross wide steel handlebars - scrap

Ergon GC1 grips for sweptback bars - scrap

Iris King waterbottle cage - donated
Total $531.93
Would have been a little over $2,100 adding the cost of the donated or
scrap parts.

Along the way I:

   - Forgot to bend the front fender attachment which confused me for a
while until I watched the Rivendell install video.
   - Double wrapped the front of the Albatross bars with gel cork tape for
a thick, easy grip. Used Rock n Roll Gold to lube the chain because another
friend donated half a bottle to the cause.
   - Learned a lot because I've never worked with caliper brakes before,
never removed/installed a bottom bracket before (turned out to be
   unnecessary here),
   - Painted a dozen or two chips/dings with testor's model paint because
it was cheaper than nail polish

   - Used an electrical wire twist connector cut in half to adjust the rear
   fender attachment (conveniently also orange).
   - Had a GREAT time happily distracting myself from the anxiety of the
adoption process. We expected to travel to be there for the baby's birth in
another state around 3/13, but we ended up leaving 10 days early so I
finished the bike a couple weeks after we came home ... the only things
left were the chain(s since you need two!), the bar tape, and fenders plus
   adjustments.

The Schwalbe search engine comes up with:
G-One Speed, 30-584
https://www.schwalbetires.com/node/3026
My experience is Schwalbe is sometimes undersized so I would guess this is
more like a 28mm.

So given that, the so called 35mm Kojak may or may not work:
Kojak, 35-584

[RBW] Re: Anyone have a spare Rivendell mug they're willing to part with?

2018-03-24 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Bummer. I thought maybe they were temporarily out of stock while Grant
designed a longer-handled version (seems weird and controversial now, but
soon all the mug makers will come around--better leverage, smoother sipping
experience.) And one for lefties. I even heard a rumor he was searching for
an A-1 mug factory in Taiwan. And that is definitely L.'s dog.--I hope it
gets a cut from having its mug on every mug.
