[RBW] Hillborne Questions...

2018-03-30 Thread Joe Bernard
I can't say how it would go with bolts that close, but I've definitely rubbed a
chainring with that kind of clearance.

[RBW] Hillborne Questions...

2018-03-30 Thread Adam in Indiana
So I'm looking to finally get the build on my canti Hillborne started, but a
few questions have come up...

First off, safe clearance between the chainstay and chainring bolts. I'm using
a Veloce 110 bcd power torque crank, and the chainring bolts come pretty close
to the stays... The worse is the hidden bolt behind the crankarm, with about
1.5mm of clearance. That is, I can just squeeze/scrape a 1.5mm hex key through
the gap. To little? I'm not sure how much the Sam will flex under my 210
lbs... Wouldn't that part of the chainstay move/flex with the bottom bracket
anyhow..?

Second question is on the fork vent holes... Has anyone tried to route dynamo
wiring through them? Is it even possible to get through the top of the fork
blade and crown?

Thanks, everyone!

[RBW] Re: Many nice Sam Hillbornes lately

2018-03-30 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Thanks Tom. Any help appreciated but certainly do not take time away from
anything important! It's just that I will someday have a 58cm Sam, and
will have an Acorn tall rando bag waiting for it. I will certainly
measure everything numerous times, then still worry that it is right, but
your set-up looks almost exactly the way I imagine mine will work out. I
do love the orange versions, and with the cream headtube and the tan
sidewalls, it looks perfect. I have to say I also love the lush green
grass and leaves in the picture! Winter and early spring are really
hanging on here in the midwest.

Thanks for any help!

2018-03-30 Thread tc
Lum,
Thanks. Most of the credit for the photo goes to Mother Nature, as usual:
Thin, even overcast, shot a tad less than an hour before sunset (magic
hour...). The Spring green-up all around us these days makes everything
look great. But I have to admit the orange tone of the Sam looks really
great against the green lawn and leaves.

My contribution was shooting with a Canon S110, handheld, about 15 feet
away from the bike and zoomed in a bit, down at bike level. I used
aperture priority, f5.9 @ 1/10 (show shutter speed contributed to
fuzziness).

After downloading to my Thinkpad, I brought up the basic Windows 10
"Photos" editor, cropped it, added a touch more of the "Clarity" setting,
and finally used a little vignetting to darken the edges and make the bike
pop a little more.

Hey Tom! Aye, 44s fit, at least the Snoqualmie Pass do. No idea on Rock n’
Roads. The 44’s are snug, so no play if your rim goes out of true, and a bit
less front to rear space for shifting. I prefer the ultra supple ride of
Compass. Estes is beautiful. I grew up in Ft. Collins and grew up playing in
the NP.

Re: [RBW] Re: Turkey Vulture Supreme Gearing: New article about super low gearing on the Analog Journal

2018-03-30 Thread Nick Payne
MTB 11-speed cassettes with 40t large cog are pretty common these days, and
I've found you don't even need an MTB RD to use them. The latest Ultegra
GS R8000 RD will change across an 11-40 no problem with the B-screw most of
the way in. Also, using the MTB cassettes has the advantage that you don't
need a new hub with the longer 11-speed freehub body and more wheel dish to
fit an 11-speed cassette - the large 11-speed cassettes fit on older
8/9/10-speed hubs because the large inner cog can overhang the freehub more
to the inside without the RD hitting the spokes in bottom gear. I fitted
one of these cassettes and a Sugino OX crank with 39-26 chainrings to my
wife's road bike, which gives her gears from 93" down to 17". She spins up
the hills and annoys a few of the big beefy blokes who are grunting up in
their hero gearing...

Re: [RBW] Re: Turkey Vulture Supreme Gearing: New article about super low gearing on the Analog Journal

2018-03-30 Thread John Hawrylak
James

I believe 24t grannys are common:
1 RBW has the Sugino XD2 triple with a 24 and also their Silver brand with
a 24
2 Spa Cycles in the UK sells the Xd2 with TA rings down to a 24
3 Additionally, 74mm BCD 24T granny rings are available.

The 15% difference from 24/34 (19.3gi) to 24/40 (16.4gi) is the 14% to 15%
delta Rohloff quotes as being a standard % change for shifts. Also the
24/34 to 24/40 shift has a delta gi of 2.9 gi which is approx. the same the
2.6gi diff for a 30 to 34 rear shift (21.9 to 19.3 gi).

although your 34 to 36 to 40 is 2 shifts, it is equivalent to only 1 shift.
Bigger cogs are required to obtain the same % changes in gear inches

*Your TVS gearing is a great idea, really pushing the envelop *& getting
gear inches not available before with a RD. I just think a
apples-to-apples comparison should have been made on the granny's.

Thanks for the pictures. Sorry about the confusing post

I wanted the horizontal distance along the rack, from the front of it to
directly above the rear drop out containing the strut plate. This point
should be just aft of the strut to rack top rivet.

Just eyeballing it from the pic with the tape measure, it looks to be about
11cm

My mountain bike days were mostly pre-1995, with the first being a CyclePro

Re: [RBW] Re: Turkey Vulture Supreme Gearing: New article about super low gearing on the Analog Journal

2018-03-30 Thread Analog Cycles Frederick, MD
John,

If I compared a 24t granny and a 34t cog and claimed TVS was 23% lower than
that, that would be not true. However, I compared* a typical touring
crankset *(Sugino XD) and rear cassette 11-34... same rear spread used by
surly, riv, etc. There are also 11-36 cassettes out there, which would in
fact be 1 shift lower. However, the 40t provides two shifts lower than a
34t cassette. So even if the stock touring bike had a 24t up front, with a
40 out back you would have two lower gears to shift into.

700c x 35, 24t granny and 34t rear cog = 19.34 Sub in a 36t cog from
Shimano: 18.25. Sub in a 40t from IRD or Sunrace: 16.35. That is indeed
a 15% difference between a 24/34 and a 24/40, but where you got the idea
that was equivalent to one shift... I don't know.

Even if there was no difference in gearing, the TVS has a clutch, which is
*clutch* for riding off road.

Love the idea, and I'm close to actually trying it on my Jones... A 29x3"

I also like the idea for my Saluki, a rough stuff RnR or new compass knobby set
to pair with my compass bsp set. But I haven't made it happen. Quality
wheelsets are expensive especially if they aren't seeing regular use... If I
got into cross or something that really drove a knobby tire it would make more
sense.

You claim of 23% lower gearing is not exactly true. The difference is 15%,
since a touring bike can easily have a 24T granny vs your article using a
26T granny for the touring bike and a 24T granny for TVS. So the article
is not a true comparison between a 26T granny/34T cog and your TVS of 24T /
40T.

The 24/34 gives 19.3 gi. The 15% difference to your TVS of 16.4 gi

loose, steep stuff.

[RBW] Re: Turkey Vulture Supreme Gearing: New article about super low gearing on the Analog Journal

2018-03-30 Thread Nick Payne
My touring bike has had a 17" low gear for many years - Rohloff hub with
38t chainring and 17t rear cog. I can happily ride it up steep climbs at
6-7kph with my cadence still up at around 80. It's got me up some Swiss
mountains with gradients getting up to about 30%. Here it is near the top
of the Mostelegg pass, which had an average gradient of 13% with a maximum
of 23%, and according to my bike computer I doddled up at an average speed
of 6.7kph.

Re: [RBW] Turkey Vulture Supreme Gearing: New article about super low gearing on the Analog Journal

2018-03-30 Thread Jay Connolly
Thank for this, James. Some time ago, I came across your turkey vulture concept
and now employ it on several bikes. I live in an area with plenty of very steep
paved and gravel roads—many of them approaching 20% for short stretches—and
even steeper sections on the MTB trails. I’ve found that on MTB or mixed
terrain bikes, an 11-50 1x with a 32t chainring works great. (On once of these
bikes I have a SRAM GX shifter, and on another I use a Shimano XT shifter. Both
use the Shimano M8000 11s rear mech.) On a road bike, I want 105” or better at
the top, but I still need to preserve the 19” low end, so I’ve gone with the WI
46/26 and a 12-36 cassette. Thanks for helping people find these solutions.

[RBW] Re: Who swaps out wheel sets to keep from buying new bikes?

2018-03-30 Thread Philip Williamson
I've had "extra wheelsets" for bikes, but never used them. I just ride what
I've got on the bike, and start fantasizing about getting another frame.

I could use a knobby wheelset for the Bontrager, but I kind of want a whole
new bike for dirt (forward geometry singlespeed hardtail/rigid 29er).
I do have the kickback/dynamo wheelset I could swap back onto the Quickbeam
for the fixed/dynamo set on it now, but to make that worthwhile, I'd want
to put on the BG RnR tires, which means removing the fenders, which seems
like more work than I want to do for one weekend. More fun just to build up
another bike!

Re: [RBW] Turkey Vulture Supreme Gearing: New article about super low gearing on the Analog Journal

2018-03-30 Thread Patrick Moore
That's an interesting view of gearing, and an interesting mix of components
to get it. I personally would rather walk after a certain point (or just
avoid the route), but that's my own preference.

I recall, back about 1990, when your typical mtb gearing was 48/38/28 X
14-28 7 speed (26" low), installing a Mountain Tamer Quad eensy teensy
granny inside of the 28; it was either a 16 or an 18 t splined cog that
attached to a bolt-on (74 bcd) splined holder. Whether 16 or 18 t, I got 16
or 17 gi, which I found too low to manage -- I'd fall over trying to get my
feet into the straps, and of course, setup was very finicky.

The man is still in business, and you can still get a 16 t "ring". Pair
that with a 50 t cog and a 26" 50 mm wheel for 8.32 gi. Now sprint like
Denis Demetriev or whoever is currently a World Champ at 200 rpm and you'd
be going just a tiny hair under 5 mph! Keep up that spin!

I'm kidding of course, and I think that the Turkey system is very
interesting, and one I'd certainly try if I rode very steep inclines and
had the skills (which I certainly do not) to keep my balance on them.
Really, gearing has to be aligned with needs and skills, and I dislike very
steep, technical stuff, and can't ride it anyway.

I'm curious: For heavily loaded touring, what is the lowest gear you (all)
find desirable?

Beautiful bike! I've always like the green on the Hunq. I also have a Tubus
Tara on my Sam--I wish the Riv forks had mounts in the right place to fit
it without an adapter.

One build question--what is that bottle mount for on the downtube? Never
seen anything like it.

And I see a ton of bikes in the background! Wish I had that kind of
space...actually, it's probably better that I don't.

[RBW] Re: Clem Baby Hauling

2018-03-30 Thread David B
I've used the Yepp Mini and currently using the Yepp Maxi Easyfit with a
specific rack that has an Easyfit window. I spent a lot of time figuring
out different attachment designs and ended up liking the Easyfit design the
best - and it works great.
The rack it goes with is a beast! Steel tubing, and thick tubes at that.
It's a Steco Power Safety Carrier - purchased from Holland Bike Shop.
Before that, I used a Yepp Mini. Our second son just turned 9 months and
I'm considering just buying another Yepp Maxi setup and rear rack to go on
my wife's Clementine, that way we'll have dedicated setups for either
child.

Photos here:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BbC9N6IBisp/?taken-by=treetopgoods (second one
in)
https://www.instagram.com/p/Baj5rBWBGPT/?taken-by=treetopgoods

No photos of the Yepp Mini, but with the Clem's higher headtube, it
actually pushed the seat up and back further than I'd prefer when mounted
on the quill stem. Might, just might, be ready to sell the Yepp Mini if
anyone is interested.

[RBW] Clem Baby Hauling

2018-03-30 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I'd been contemplating all through fall/winter on how to best convert my
65cm Clem H to a kid hauler come spring. Well, spring has finally arrived
and our son hits 9 months soon. Once the weather really breaks I hope to
get him out for some rides but until then I'm still working out some kinks.

I initially narrowed down my selection to a Yepp Mini front seat to start
with and a rear rack for other cargo (alternatively Bobike, if I remember
correctly, but a LBS stocks Yepp and seemed a great choice after doing a
bit of researching and checking them out there in person.)

But then a friend recently gave me a Thule Ride-A-Long rear they had
received as a gift but didn't actually work with their existing bikes due
to frame design, fit, and cable routing so they found an alternate and had
this one sitting around unused.

The Ride-A-Long looks like a terrific seat but turns out the wide spread of
the Clem H seatstays interferes with the "legs" of the seat (the
original fully socketed H seatlug... not sure if the new ball & socket and
Chev lugs now used on smaller Clems would cause the same issue since they
join the seatube with a narrower junction.) The seat installs via two
parallel steel legs inserted into a locking base that clamps around the
seattube. Turns out the width of the legs just isn't wide enough to clear
the Clem H stays.

It installs fine on a couple other frames and I already test rode on my
single speed, just without the precious cargo in tow. Cheapest and easiest
solution is just set one of those up in the interim but I guess this post
is meant as both a PSA for anyone considering the same seat and also
a query on how others have set their Clem up for baby hauling?

I've previously discussed with and/or seen pics of some using a Yepp Maxi
rear with rack but wondering what else has worked well for others on a Clem?

Thanks,

[RBW] Who swaps out wheel sets to keep from buying new bikes?

2018-03-30 Thread Surlyprof
I consider my “n” to be one and two thirds which translates to a 2010 or 11
orange Canti-Hillborne and a Brompton. I also had a Soma Groove but had to
give it up when I lost the storage space for 2 full size bikes. I miss the
dedicated mtb but have really maximized the versatility of the Hillborne by
swapping between two wheelsets. I keep 45c Smart Sams on the Mavic A719 36h
wheelset for trail riding and Barlow Pass ELs on the lighter 32h Synergy
wheelset for go-fastish riding. Fenders have been off for over a year to avoid
one additional step when swapping wheels. Commuting usually happens on the
Brompton and the train unless I have an early day planned and can ride the
Hillborne the entire 20 miles home. I change wheels out to fit my mood or the
ride of the day. CX50 brakes open wide enough to even free up the Smart Sams.
Although I miss the Soma, it’s nice to have the space at home since my “extra
bike” (ie: 2nd wheelset) can hang in a very small space.

[RBW] Re: From the Blug: Tall Roadeo

2018-03-30 Thread Austin B.
Is it me, or does this frame seem too small for this setup? I wonder if Riv
tried to talk this customer into a larger-framed AHH?

It's just not a typical setup that comes out of Riv--bars below saddle,
lots of seatpost showing, bars maxed out. Maybe they are just inserted at
the extremes for the photoshoot. Maybe the customer just REALLY wanted a
Roadeo (and who wouldn't?).

That said, I'd love to drop the saddle to 82cm and test ride this beauty!

[RBW] Re: From the Blug: Tall Roadeo

2018-03-30 Thread Matt B.
I'm pretty sure they don't insert the (new) seatpost fully in mockups such
as these to avoid adding scratches prior to delivery to the owner. The
rider can then dial in their own seat height.

[RBW] From the Blug: Tall Roadeo

2018-03-30 Thread Garth
Center to top of the lug is how they are measured PM. When we grew up frames
were always c-c. Many frame builders who have been around awhile still measure
c-c though. I always thought c-t odd though since all the other tubes are
measured c-c.

It would great to try a tall Riv road frame to see how it compared with the
typical stuff I grew up with, which always felt "top heavy", for lack of better
term. The tall Roadeo "looks" like it would be no better, but that is just an
assumption based on a photo and so doesn't matter.
