more seatpost. But I am using a similar bar set up, nitto albatross on a

Good thinking, Joe. The saddle height seems reasonable and the bike doesn't

[RBW] Re: Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-23 Thread Jeffrey Arita
Hi Reid,

I am a resident of one of the numerous suburbs around Los Angeles
(Claremont). Assuming you are staying near the Pasadena area and you want
to ride 'trails' (meaning dirt), you will likely want to bring a geared
bike. This assumes you want to do a lot the trails just north of Pasadena,
within a VERY easy ride from the Huntington Library. All you have to do is
look due North and go up! Once you reach the dirt trails they do go
vertical quite quickly and stay that way until you get to the top. Good
brakes are a good thing too when you come down.

https://www.mtbproject.com/directory/8017025/pasadena

Some points to consider:

   - Even though you are really, really close to 'civilization' a short
ride up into the mountains will mean you are pretty much on your own. Any
accident and it could be a helicopter ride out. The terrain is quite steep
(that is why it is so hard to put the brush fires out).
   - It is getting warmer here in SoCal. Might be a good idea to bring a
hydration pack, first aid kit, mobile phone and lights. You never know
   (see above bullet point).
   - We were up at the top of Mount Wilson last year on a bikepacking
trip. At the top are numerous microwave towers and (I think) cell phone
towers. I had ZERO cell phone signal. Go figure.
   - Tell someone where you are going and when you plan on being back. If
you aren't back at the appointed time, have your person call for help and
possibly summon rescue. Again, it is so close to civilization but it is
the real deal. Water is scarce and you could be in a world of hurt,
   especially if by yourself.

Sorry to sound so negative but I'd rather be blunt and clear about the
mountains that are so close to Pasadena.

++

IF you are sticking to sealed (aka paved) roads, then I think you can
easily navigate them with a singlespeed. Most of the paved roads are
engineered so hills should not be a huge issue.

Have fun!

Jeff

Re: [RBW] Muttonmaster

2018-04-23 Thread Patrick Moore
The photos are very typical of scenes your might see in the Four Corners
area, particularly that of the 2 Navajo women, who look as if they might be
middle-aged daughter and ancient grandmother. It is typical for Navajo
young people, from childhood up to late adolescence or early adulthood, to
have open and fresh faces, like the one shown, while the elders have a
still, impassive, stoic, even granite-like countenance.

But this impassivity of demeanor and character goes together with a very
earthy and even ribald sense of humor; the contrast between gravity,
impassibility, and dignity of countenance and very earthy -- but still
dignified! -- spoken ejaculations was very striking, to an outsider like
myself. *

Even many of those more or less roped in to the white man's culture still
retained something of this very typical combination of impassivness and
down-to-earth-ness. I recall watching some utterly evanescent comedy movie
from the late '80s which in a scene leading up to the film's denouement had
a pilotless airplane taxiing in circles under power around the vast dirt
lot of a rez trading post, while some hapless young man from back east in a
dark suit ran yelling after it, desperately trying to board. Meanwhile, on
the covered porch of the dusty trading post, 3 old Navajo men in cowboy
hats, western shirts, jeans, and boots sat rocking, silently watching the
antics. The scene continued for several minutes until the young man managed
to grab hold, fling himself inside, and take off.

There was a period of silence as the dust settled; the old men continued to
rock, silent, faces impassive, looking off into the empty distance that
makes up the rez landscape.

Finally, one old man turned to the one rocking next to him, and, in a quiet
voice, made a presumably sarcastic remark, in Navajo, of course, at which
all 3 chuckled quietly amongst themselves.

Very, very typical!

*(And perhaps shared among traditional people of all cultures, more than
among moderns of any culture. A common friend told me that a traditional
Catholic priest I knew, who gave me good counsel, and who suffered 10 years
from bone marrow cancer without, said our friend, once asking God to
alleviate his suffering [said priest had been a prominent Boston-area
thoracic surgeon who went into psychiatry and spiritual counseling after
health problems forced him into early retirement] -- said priest remarked
to our common friend: "When you're being fucked, you might as well bend
over and enjoy it." Priest was son of the great metaphysician and historian
of eastern and western sacred art, Ananda Coomaraswamy, whom you can read
about in Wikipedia.)

That's $25-$30 off what are for all intents and purposes brand new tires. I

my conservative move is your potential gain!

[RBW] Betty's an eBike Now

2018-04-23 Thread Cecily Walker
Some of y'all might remember me. *waves hello*

Unfortunately, as my rheumatoid arthritis and vascular conditions
progressed, I had to stop riding my bike. I've missed my Rizzo so much, and
was thinking about selling her. I did add a Vespa to my stable, but it just
never gave me the same feeling I got from riding my bike.

A while back (a couple of years?) I asked whether anyone in this group had
any experience with converting a Betty Foy or any other Rivendell bike to
an eBike. There weren't many responses, and for a long time, I gave up hope
that I'd be able to ride ever again... until about two weeks ago.

I went into my local eBike shop, and asked whether it was possible to
convert my beloved Rizzo to an eBike, and they said that while it would be
a challenge, it was doable. I had to get a new wheel built, and I had to
sign a waiver about braking because the Betty Foy doesn't come with disc
brakes.

Today I am happy to report that a reputable eBike dealer can in fact
convert a Riv bike to an eBike, and I'm back riding again. Hooray!

I just needed to share my joy with people who would get it. Cheers,
everyone!

[RBW] Re: FS - Orange Quickbeam complete - 64 c-to-c

2018-04-23 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have an original green QB and have coveted the orange. The 64cm would be at
the tip top of my 89cm PBH threshold, but I will pass. QB/SO are fun,
surprisingly versatile bikes. Recommended.

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Quill Stem 70mm 26.0

2018-04-23 Thread Austin B.
Hoping someone here has one in a box/drawer, etc.

I'm looking for a Nitto Quill Stem, 70mm with a 26.0 clamp. With a
mid-length insert. Preferably not a 225mm length Technomic/Tallux. But not
something as short as a Pearl.

A Technomic Deluxe with a 190mm length would work.

It's going on my wife's 50cm Roadini which has a short headtube that limits
how low the Technomic can go (which is what's in there now).

Feel free to PM me. Thanks!

This version of the Rosco appears to be meant for upright/swept-back

portion of the choco bars are behind the stem insertion point, as a
semi-upright riding position - though I do like holding on to the forward,
leather-wrapped portion of the bar if I want to tuck in a bit and grind out
 some speedy miles.

[RBW] Re: Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-23 Thread Reid Echols
Philip, the thought had occurred to me! Probably not in the budget right
now, sadly. Also thinking the BMC's ability to clear Thunder Burts will
come in handy.

Patrick, your rambles actually inspired the initial choice to run the BMC
as a single speed. If I can get this (18t) freewheel unstuck, I'm planning
on having a WI dos eno setup: 38/35 up front, 16/19 in the back. Depending
on how thick of a tire I go with, I'm hoping that will give me a decent
cruising gear and a "trail gear".

Thanks for the input everyone, I'll have to do some research and see how
far I'll be able to make it on the weekends. LA National Forest seems like
a great option.

[RBW] WTT: 54cm Quickbeam for 56cm Quickbeam/Simple One

2018-04-23 Thread Joe Bernard
Chris, if no one trades you may want to grab a pipe cutter from Ace and lop and
inch-or-so off them bars. My 54.5 Pashley Clubman that I turned into a townie
2-speed was designed for dropbars like your Quickbeam, so Albatrosses didn't
work for me, either. I ended up going with a semi-flat V-O Milan bar on a 13cm
stem..the new Nitto Wavie that Riv is doing is a similar design.

Maybe you're right and the bike is too small for you, but it may just need some
bar surgery.

[RBW] Re: Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-23 Thread Ed Carolipio
Hmm, I just rode through the area with the LACBC a couple of weekends ago.
If there's any doubt, I'd recommend getting some gears. There are enough
ups-and-downs in that area to warrant it, you're in LA in the summer so the
weather can be Austin-like, and you're within shouting distance of Angeles
National Forest for opportunities to do non-commute riding.

A couple of caveats: I do know folks who ride SS by choice in that area so
it can be done, and frankly I'm a wuss with bad knees so I need at least a
1x to get by.

[RBW] Re: Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-23 Thread Drw
If you aren't as strong and strong willed as Patrick, you'll want gears.
All of the dirt trails here, to my experience, have very steep sections.
The hills here don't roll, they just kind of shoot up. I do a fair amount
of walking even with a low low gear. The other thing to note is that most
of the trails begin 10-20 miles outside of what i would call the city. So
if you are riding to the trails, you'll do considerable climbing before you
even get off road.

[RBW] Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-23 Thread Deacon Patrick
Hey Reid! Simplest answer. Yes! Ride till you can’t, walk till you can. You’ll
love it!

More detailed answer: what’s your gearing? My QB does great with a dingle 71”
high and 57” low here in the Colorado Rockies on 38mm Compass Steilacooms. I
could gear higher and lower by 10+ inches and be fine, just walking more or
going slower downhill. You may find trails steeper than some here, but nothing
longer or at a higher altitude. Grin. Take the simple bike and enjoy the ride
and the area without worrying about gears. Poke around here for photographic
and anecdotal evidence: https://thegrid.ai/withabandon/

So, not local to LA, but considered by many to be loco because I’m happy riding
fixed anywhere. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-23 Thread Joe Bernard
Hopefully actual LA folks will chime in, but I'll start as a used-to-be LA guy:
What most people commonly call "Los Angeles" is a vast area with every possible
form of hill and flatland. In your shoes I wouldn't be inclined to venture into
this strange and unpredictable area with one flashy gear; the beater 29er
sounds like the ticket to me.

[RBW] Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-23 Thread Reid Echols
Hi folks, I'll be traveling from Austin to Los Angeles in a few short weeks
for a fellowship at the Huntington Library, and am between bringing a
"beater" aluminum 29er I could build up from spare parts or my trusty BMC
Monstercross, currently set up as a "dinglespeed" with 43c gravel tires. I
can handle most of the Austin hills pretty handily, and really enjoy riding
the BMC on local singletrack (not too many rock gardens, just the faster,
flowy stuff).

My question is, will I be able to fully enjoy the trails near LA on a
singlespeed, cross-style bike, or am I displaying a bit of hubris and
should just bring the more traditional mountain bike for the climbing
gears? I'll be commuting to the Huntington as well and don't want anything
too flashy lest it be stolen. Local perspectives would be welcome!

All best,

[RBW] Workcycles Transport Double Top Tube 65cm

2018-04-23 Thread Dave Grossman
Cross post from IBOB. If this isn't Riv enough then please delete. But it
sure ain't a race bike!

Not sure if this is up everyones alley but I thought some of you might be
interested.
I am selling this to fund a Workcycles FR8, which is much easier for kid
carrying with an extended rear and step through frame. Otherwise, this
would be my apocalypse bike.

This might be the most durable and bombproof commuter/hauler around. Has
ability to hold 110 pounds in the rear and 55 up front with the removable
front rack. Everything is sealed for durability including brakes and chain.
Even has a built in lock over the rear wheel.

It is manufactured in Holland by Workcycles in the Azor factory. This is as
authentic of a dutch bike as you will find.

This bike has a tall standover at 890mm but has a very short reach. I am
around 6'1" and it is about spot on. Someone much taller could ride it as
well and depending on your pubic bone height perhaps a bit shorter. It is
listed as a 65cm version. If you can clear the top tube you will find it is
like sitting on a throne. Amazing comfort for everyday riding. I've even
taken it on 20 mile trips and while it is heavy, it can carry almost
anything.

More info here:
https://jclindbikes.com/city-bikes/workcycles-transport-double-tube/

Hand-Brazed, Lugged Steel Frame, Oversized Tubing
Zinc Carbonate Primer, Wear Resistant Powdercoat
Heavy Duty 28 Inch Wheels With Special Double Wall Rims

Strong Rear Rack With Elastic Straps
Hub Dynamo, upgrade Busch and Muller LED Headlamp, LED Taillight With

Rear Wheel Guards
Fully Enclosed Chain Case
Integrated Rear Wheel Lock
Steering Stabilizer Spring
Center Mounted Double Leg Kickstand
Brooks B67 Genuine Leather Saddle
Chromed, Brass Bell
Additional and removable front rack

Asking $1000. Local pickup in Chicago. Willing to meet someone within
couple of hours drive as well. Shipping and packing at buyers cost. Since
it is a behemoth, I would drop it off at J.C. Lind bike in Chicago, who is
the only midwest dealer. They have the box that this would fit in.
 Plus bike flights, of course.

Please PM off list if interested

[RBW] Schwalbe Pro One 26 X 1.1

2018-04-23 Thread Patrick Moore
Bumping this question, and aggressively and unapologetically cross posting
for max cov: does anyone know how well this rolls, how durable it is, and
how wide it really measures on a standard road rim?

How about the 700C equivalents? Note, I'd be using one with a tube: rolling
"feel"? Width versus labeled size (on what rim?)?

Particularly interested in how the One rolls compared to the 1.35 Kojak and
the similar non-TG Pasela.

Thanks.

I really enjoyed that post Patrick. "Thursday" has, I believe, an indomitable
spirit, and he would be an asset to any community. He produced machines that, I
believe, literally put food on peoples tables. I am, admittedly, fat and happy,
and should be grateful that I can spend vast (comparatively) sums on bike after
bike, simply so I can ride a different one, with different tires and
handlebars, on a different surface today. The Muttonmaster exists in different
forms in different countries, where I see pictures of people carrying
unfathomable loads (double TTs or diagatubes galore!). Also, why the f***
should someone have to give up their horse so they can have a few more
sheep?!?!?!?! What a disgraceful way to treat native peoples.

Re: [RBW] Active warm-ups and stretching

What are those rides like in terms of distance, intensity, terrain and
speed?

On 04/22/2018 06:20 PM, tc wrote:
As I get older my body gets better at reminding me to warm up before I
do anything remotely athletic ... and stretch afterward.

Those of us over 30 or so (I'm over 55) were likely taught to 'cold
stretch' before athletics, which has since been pretty well shot down
in recent years by those advocating doing  an 'active warm-up' before
exercise instead of stretching.  It seems stretching reduces muscular
strength, which you of course don't want; and, if your muscles are too
cold, you may end up pulling something -- a horrible way to start a
bike ride or whatever you set out to do.

But I've found that I still need to stretch some about 5-7 miles into
a ride, particularly my lower back and hamstrings.  So, what has
worked for me is to jump rope, do some body weight squats, lunges,
light kettlebell swings, and maybe good ol' jumping jacks for about
5-10 min's to warm up my muscles before a ride ... then ride about 5-7
miles ... and /then /do some light stretching of my hams, glutes, and
hips.  Doing the light stretching after riding a while, giving the
muscles a chance to warm up, really increases my flexibility, feels
great, and sets me up to be way more comfortable for the rest of my
ride, no matter how long it ends up being.

When I'm back home, I spend at least 15-20 minutes stretching out
while my body is still warm.

Approaching warm-ups and stretching like this has kept me in the game
without pain or injuries for the past 12 months, and I rarely feel the
tightness I once did after riding.

Years ago a chiropractor friend recommended this book on stretching,
so I thought I'd pass it along in case it may help some of you.  It's
really the best I've seen on the subject:
Stretching
,
by Bob Anderson (I see it's now offered as a 30th anniversary edition,
so he must be helping a lot of people)

Here's my Sam, patiently waiting as I stretch at the 6-3/4 mile mark
this morning.  This is a convenient place to stop and stretch because
that concrete block wall steps down behind where I'm taking this photo
to a level where I can extend a leg straight out, rest my heel on a
block,  and slowly, easily s - t - r - e - t - c - h those warmed-up
hamstrings and back muscles.

Here's to flexibility and pain-free rides!
Tom

Oh, and sorry, missed the question on max tire - I believe the fork will be
the limiting factor on tire size - forks were surplus forks from multiple
models I believe - mine looks similar to the fork I had on my Sam. The 38's
I have on now have plenty of room - I'd guess you could get 42's in there
alright, maybe 45's without fenders.

I would not say that the frame in general has a short reach, for it's
stated size of 55.5, it has a longer than average effective top tube length
of 66cm, which is not remotely short for me. I would normally ride a 60cm
frame where the top tube could be in the 57 - 61cm range, with drop bars.
This version of the Rosco appears to be meant for upright/swept-back
handlebars, such as the choco bars that I built it with, or albatross bars
and the like. This Rosco is comfy for me, as-built, where the handgrip
portion of the choco bars are behind the stem insertion point, as a
semi-upright riding position - though I do like holding on to the forward,
leather-wrapped portion of the bar if I want to tuck in a bit and grind out
some speedy miles.

Re: [RBW] Re: My First Rivendell

2018-04-23 Thread Tommy Patterson
Hi Bruce, nice meeting you too. Perfect weather for a nice, long ride. And
your bike looked great also!

A guy in front of me went down and I made a quick swerve to miss him. In
doing so, my rear wheel locked up. Initially I thought that the wheel
jumped out of the dropouts and was buzzing my frame, but as soon as I got
to looking at it I noticed that it was seirously out of true. I called the
SAG support and while waiting I saw hairline cracks on every drive-side
spoke eyelet! I had just had the wheel trued and this was the first ride on
it, so I am wondering if the mechanic over tensioned the spokes leaving it
prone to failure 樂. The wheel is being laced over to a new rim (at another
shop!) and I should be back on it in a week.

Thanks for the motivation to join the local rando group, I'll do my best to
link up with them once I am settled into my new place in NOLA.
