2018-05-07 Thread Kainalu V.
Nice! Pleasure sharing the road with you Todd. I'm usually hitting the
Queensboro at 8:40ish, but that day's meeting promised all the coffee and
treats I could wolf down before the 9am start, thus the five minutes ahead of
late...
I was looking at a photo on here of an orange quickbeam and saw how I may have
seen it as a red/cinnamon color. Yours is indeed a different shade? Regardless,
killer bike, nicely outfitted. I'll be on the lookout.

[RBW] Re: New Journal Entry up at Analog Cycles: Disconnecting to get connected: A Journey in Satchidananda

2018-05-07 Thread James / Analog Cycles

Steve, thanks! More pics coming. We don't make syrup (the shop is an old
sugar house my great uncle built, but it's all bikes now) but a local
friend (Gary of the North) makes great syrup from the trees on our land,
and I could send ya some for the going rate. We do plan to help him next
spring, with the tapping and evaporation process. Mainly that means
sitting around in a steamy sugar house, feeding wood chunks to the
evaporator, drinking cheap beer.

I had a fantastic conversation with the founders of Hold Fast. “We don’t have
planned obsolence” was one stand out phrase, given in response to my
description of the stupid riding I do and the LCG wear an upsidedown strap will
encounter. “If you have a problem with it, let us know, whenever.” and “All our
materials are mill spect. for us to withstand the rigors of urban fixed gear
riding doing all kinds of stupid stuff nothing else stood up to.”

Sold. They are sewing me an all grey large as we speak. Grin.

What a fantastic and delightful gift! Thank you, first and foremost, to Grant

researching bikes to see if I might be able to ride one. That photo is iconic
for me, as it eppitimizes the riding I’d hoped to do (and now, I DO! Sweet!). I
look forward to reading these over time, but delighted already in gems like
“lugite” and “When Band-Aids came in tins” (wow, did that rubber smell come

really might want to give them at try, if they're what you're really
looking for. Of the two other tires you mentioned, I'd got with the Naches
Pass EL over the McClure. The McClure is the last of the "Compassela"
tires, good as far as they go, but just not as supple as any of the EL
 variants.

Re: [RBW] Re: MTBubbe Update

2018-05-07 Thread Patrick Moore
I hear that there are other colors of Loctite that work better in shear,
but blue worked for me.

I'd like to see a photo of the Gilbert house. I haven't seen it since about
1966, age 11 or so, when the ancient Gilbert siblings still lived there in
all their Faulknerian eccentricity (Aunt Gus proclaimed with pride that she
hadn't been out of doors for 13 years; she was immensely fat, as you would
be if you ate 3 full ones a day, and snacked on hot buttered biscuits with
honey between courses), complete with cook and kitchen separated from the
house by a covered walkway.

You can try torque-ing down the saddle clamp bolt to prevent it from
 shifting.

But, any two-bolt seatpost will clamp more securely than the Nitto S65
Crystal Fellow (or clone) you're using.
The Nitto S83 or lugged S84 are the Riv-supplied solutions. I also see
two-bolt posts in silver from Ritchey, Deda, and others.
I like the clamp head on Thomson posts, but they only come in straight
(not enough setback with a Brooks) or angled (proper setback, weird
looks). Soma's Zero post has the same problem (lack of setback).

For payment, i accept either Google Pay (preferred) or PayPal. I will
leave it up to you based on your comfort level on the type of paypal to use.

And a few terms to keep in mind.

Prices do not include shipping (I will charge you actual USPS
shipping)--I’m on the east coast so shipping will be less the closer you

Brooks Challenge Tool Saddle Bag, Black,
This is the small leather tool bag, i picked this up second hand and one of
the bolts had come undone on one of the straps, i replaced it with a nut
and bolt, you can see the bolt on the inside. There is some scratches and
wear on the leather, it could use a good polish. The straps are a little
crunchy and stretched out, but it still feels like it will hold.

Baggins Handlebar Bag:
I believe this is the pre-cursor to the hobo bag, it looks a little smaller
then a true hobo bag and the pockets on the front are different, this one
has 1 big pocket instead of two separate ones on the front, with a single
flap. Some light grease stains on the bottom where it got close to the
tire (looks worst in pics). Otherwise in very good condition, the leather
is still really dark. You can use this without a rack or decaleur (and i
don’t think using a rack would actually help) the bag sways as you
pedal--but there are d-rings on the corners in the front where you could
secure it with some twine, will work with drop bars the best. You can get
this to work with alba and moustache bars but it will require some creative
arrangements with twine to the brake levers to secure it.

please read-up on these and think about what shifters you want to use,
as-is these would work with non Shimano shifters (Shimano shifters need a
special washer, which Riv sell). I mounted a set of Suntour DT shifters,
right side was fine but left side was a little loose--would need an
additional washer/shim. You may not have that problem but FYI. I’ve
included a picture of these mounts with Suntour DT shifters mounted as an

There were those cork (?) flash drives which had the pdf's. Though

2018-05-07 Thread Paul Clifton
Thanks for the tip Patrick. I'll give the loctite a try, since I have some,
and it's way cheaper than a new seatpost.

I found that historic house you were talking about back in the summer:
https://goo.gl/maps/NfmsToEgUfL2
It's less than a mile from where I used to live, but I didn't get a chance
to ride down there. It's still close by. I'll snap a photo when I do make
it.

I'm looking forward to getting this bubbe set up more appropriately for the
trail and giving a good report on how it does.

I've been using RTP Extralights on my Surly Trucker DeLuxe (a
26"-wheeled LHT, for all intents and purposes). I find they measure out at
53mm (2.08") on Sun Rhyno Lite rims. What is the inner size of the rims
you'll be wanting to mount your tires on? The Rhyno Lites have an interior
measure of 22mm. The RTPs fit under Planet Bike Cascadia ATB fenders. You
really might want to give them at try, if they're what you're really
looking for. Of the two other tires you mentioned, I'd got with the Naches
Pass EL over the McClure. The McClure is the last of the "Compassela"
tires, good as far as they go, but just not as supple as any of the EL
 variants.

Currently, I'm leaning towards the Naches Pass EL in black. It doesn't

probably need to drop to the McClure to add fenders. My current usage of
the Atlantis is as a grab and go around town bike, which doesn't require
 rainy rides.

What would your recommendations be for this tire?

 Thanks.

Turns out that the latter two had been uploaded to a Cyclofiend.com

 stashed these two here -

As i was searching to see if there were more of these around, I came

included RR#'s 1 through 11. (Yes, it went up to 11...) Since

25)/2 = 336. (584 + 38 + 38)/2 = 330. So, a 650x38 wheel will lower the
frame 6 mm compared to a 700x25 wheel. A 650x44 tire would compensate
perfectly, but the Riv Road frame won't fit wider than a 38.

Since the Riv Road has 80 mm of BB drop to begin with, it does have
problems with the low BB; pedal strike is always a danger. But the benefit
of an ultra-low BB is very, very good handling (and low standover).

I'm just very conscious of where my pedals are--a very useful skill in
mountain biking (which I do on other bikes).

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis tires rec request

2018-05-07 Thread Tim Gavin
Tim-

St. Sheldon's dogma is pretty conservative in the regard of "proper tire
width for a given rim width".
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html
(Width Considerations chart is the red/green one most of the way down the
page)

However, many folks have ridden many millions of miles on 2" (54 mm) tires
on 17 mm internal rims -- because that was pretty much all there were at
the dawn of MTB/ATB/Trekking bikes.

The risk with a too-wide tire is the same as that of an under-inflated
tire: risk of the tire folding over when turning aggressively.
Keep your PSI above ~25 and you shouldn't have that problem with RTPs on an
Atlas rim.

 definitely the 1.5" McClure Pass.

Currently, I'm leaning towards the Naches Pass EL in black. It doesn't
currently have fenders and current usage doesn't require them. I'd
probably need to drop to the McClure to add fenders. My current usage of
the Atlantis is as a grab and go around town bike, which doesn't require
 rainy rides.

What would your recommendations be for this tire?

 Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Has anyone attached a saddlesack to a front rack?

2018-05-07 Thread Tim Gavin
Yep, I've seen folks using the saddle loop straps to attach to a handle
bar. Then you just need something to keep the bag away from the head tube
and tire. Surly's platform rack looks good.

However, I think a randonneur or porteur style front bag would be more
useful (in the long run), just because it's designed for access while
riding. The flap of the saddlesack will open away from you.
