I also have a brompton with the large touring bag that I use for my
commute. I was able to set it up almost identically to my Hillborne. It
can be a little twitchy but you learn that smooth steering is all in the
lean. I also feel that it's about 20% more work than the Hillborne because
of the 16" wheels. I found Bike Fridays to be better in that respect.

Good Luck.

2018-05-18 Thread Surlyprof
I've had so many similar experiences. One time Vince gave me a B,B,H patch
because he remembered that we did a ride there on their last day as they
were closing the store. I went there last week with the intent of buying a
new brake hanger since mine was stripped. Instead, Vince just grabbed a
couple of barrel adjusters and we had it fixed in minutes. When I said
that I was trying to figure out what I could buy, he said that the
Hillborne looked pretty dialed as it was. I'm sure I'll go back and buy a
banana sack (they're awesome) once I figure out which color to buy.

Amazing people.make an amazing place. Visit just to see the gallery of b
film photos they've hung on the walls. Really nice.

Also tried out the new Atlantis. Those of you who pre-ordered are going to
be VERY happy. So-o-o smooth!

[RBW] Billie Bar initial review

2018-05-18 Thread adam leibow
in case anyone's curious. i bought some billie bars, and already have some
miles on them. i didn't know these were coming out but i was checking the
site periodically for the wavie bar and found these. i'm still gonna get
the wavie bar for my hunqapillar but was happy to see these imho improved
albatross. i had swapped out drop bars for albatross on my new canti-sam,
but have always had mixed feelings about the albatross bar. i dont like how
they come seemingly directly almost straight backwards towards you, and how
narrow they feel. the billie's are better imho because they have more flair
(a bit less gnarly sweep backwards) and are noticeably wider. they also
have a way longer grippable real estate, and you can mount the brake levers
forward or backward for a longer section of that grippable portion=more
options/versatility. i chose to mount the brake levers pretty far forward,
as the billies don't curve forward before turning backward quite as much as
the alba's do, and i like my reach to be pretty stretched out. this allows
a nice, more aggressive (though still technically very upright) descending
position with brake levers in reach. and, if i'm chilling out, i can sit
back and place my hands more towards the ends of the bars, a very upright
sensation. most importantly, with the alba's i felt slightly out of control
and endured a "a-second-too-late" sensation to steer to keep up with twisty
singletrack or even road descents. the billie's width and added flair
mitigate this to a degree that makes riding offroad quite a bit more
enjoyable, while still being relaxed. so, im summary, billie=albatross+more
flair outward/wider and longer grip portion. i am a fan for sure. here's
some pics:

That is a great deal on the bike Friday tandem in Bismarck, ND. Since he is
selling his parents, I don’t think the seller understands the value.

I had a bike friday takedown tandem that went into travel cases. It rode fine,
but didn’t have the complete feel like a “regular size” bike. The take down
takes about an hour and the learning curve will get it faster over time.

If you have the money, might as well give it a try and enjoy life.

Hi all,

I'm thinking about mounting an R14 on the front of my bike, however this
one does not have the top of fork braze-ons. Has anyone come up with a
creative way to mount these on a fork without the newer braze-ons? The
'arms' that come out of the back of this rack come out at the same plane as
the deck of the rack, so any adjustments are on the wrong axis.

Good to know. I did think that my Ram with Kojaks had plenty of room left
under the fenders. If that Ram could have 650B X 55s (same 700 mm diameter
as 700C X 35) ... now that would have been a nice bike!

Hey, Patrick:

I was playing around with my RAM the other day and discovered Compass 35s
easily fit just fine with SKS 45mm mudguards. This on Open Pro rims,
however.

Decided 35s just didn't work aesthetically for me, however. Fashion has
consequences, right? So went with 32s instead. Perfect ride now and was
really really good before.

2018-05-18 Thread R Shannon
Garth,

Bombadils are one of my faves too - even though I don’t own one. When I
discovered Rivendell it was the model that had a lot of appeal for me. Loved
the name, the head badge, the top tube lug and it’s stoutness.

For some time they had an unpainted prototype for sale that was a bargain. A
little small for me but could have worked. I stewed over it and eventually
settled on an Atlantis.

The roadish Bomba you describe sounds somewhat like an early Sam. Long top
tube, canti brakes and tubes not too heavy or light.

I think it’s cool your Bomba is just right sweet spot for you.

Best,
Richard

Thanks; very interesting photos. Funny, in the first photo, with the
seatpost all the way down, the tires look as if they're at least
40-somethings.

My Hon Solo has nominal 35s, actual 32s (406 X 1.35 Kojaks) and I've ridden
it once or twice on the acequia roads near my house; but our soil is so
sandy that, if the last rain is more than a couple of weeks gone, the sand
is just too deep to manage. (My ~29 mm Elk Passes, though, 24.75" in
diameter versus the 19" of the Kojaks, do noticeably better, tho' even
these flounder; point being that yes, diameter makes a difference.) I'd
like one day to replace the Kojaks with those Tioga Power Blocks that I've
heard nice things about -- 1.75"/44-45 mm as labeled.

I couldn't get it into an overhead bin, but Lyfte could certainly manage it.

Thank you Joe and Jeremy,

That is exactly what it has! I did not know about those. I will contact Wheels

2018-05-18 Thread Patrick Moore
I have no build advice, but I do say that (1) I wish I had the income of an
attorney at a big firm, and (2) that I had nice family to take some of that
money and buy me a nice Rivendell (I'd choose a Roadeo). I'll watch this
thread for developments.

Besides the build (and the statutory photos), I'll be interested in your
B-I-Law's reaction to the Clem.

Fun for you, too.

[RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-18 Thread Garth

Mine would be the Bombadil ! Hip hip hoooray for the Bomba ! !

It's my all-arounder . It's also the still the only production Riv that
fits me "just right" , and not that stack and reach are included in the geo
chart I can see why.

I really like parallel and diagonal TT's compared to diagonals. I find it
telling in some way that despite being not for sale as a production bike,
it is still listed in every geo chart update. A lighter tubed road-ish
version based on those dimensions with some tweaks like a little longer
reach and higher stack and front-center and possibly chainstays and a 71.5
STA ... that's fun !

Re: [RBW] It Was the Worst of Times, It Was the Best of Times

2018-05-18 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Thank you all for your warm regards! I felt so happy to be among like-minded
folks who know the thrill of a very first Rivendell. Also in my inbox was a
note from Christopher Murray, resident of God's Country (that's North Dakota,
where I also hail from), enclosing his Hail Mary credit for use on the Clem
purchase. A sweet and thoughtful gesture that warmed our hearts. Thank you,
Chris, you are too kind. (Kindness and helpfulness are rampant in God's
Country; if you need to have your faith in humanity renewed, you might point
your handlebars north and take a trip through God's Country this summer. Make
sure you hit Diet God's Country, which is Minnesota while you're there.)

My sister and I just got off our 3 way call with Rivendell and D is now the
proud owner of a new Grey Metallic 59 cm Clem L!!! She got him the standard
build with with some fancy touches. Rive will use the copper tape with clear
shellac to dress up those Boscos, and top them off with cork grips. He gets
fenders and the Nitto Big Rear Rack. I added on a Wald basket for his rear
rack, a Captain Hook net, a brass big-hammer bell, and a pair of Sackville blue
mudflaps. Won't D look snazzy out there? We have to wait about 2 weeks until
his bike arrives, do you think we'll be able to bear it? We'll take photos of
the the unboxing and the finished product and the proud new owner and report
back here.

I'll make the pilgrimage to God's Country again this summer, and I can't wait
to park my Betty Foy next to his Clem L.

[RBW] Re: Romulus rear derailleur hanger

2018-05-18 Thread Jeremy Till
Yes, I would agree that somebody stripped the derailleur hanger, then a
Wheels Manufacturing "Dropout Saver" was installed to fix it:

https://wheelsmfg.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=dropout+saver

The simplest solution would be to use the derailleur high limit screw to
lock out the smallest cog. I don't know about you, but I rarely use that
cog. You could also then re-adjust the derailleur to take the slack out of
the shift cable and so that the 2nd-smallest cog is the last click on the
shifter (if you're running indexed shifters), but that's not 100%
essential.

Congratulations!

If you want an Riv-appreciative shop in Minneapolis to receive, assemble,
and tune the Cheviot, give One on One cycle studio
 a try. It's at 110 Washington Avenue
downtown, near the sports arenas and Fulton brewery.
One on One is run by Gene Oberpriller, who was with Bridgestone in Grant's
time. They have a couple classic Bridgestones (XO-1 and others) on
display, as well as a hip coffee shop and some very expensive new bikes of
all kinds. Great people, and great bike culture.

[RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-18 Thread Ryan M.
My first Rivendell was an orange cant Sam Hillborne and I loved it set up
with Noodles, 650b freewheel Rivy hub and dyad wheels, and bar end
shifters. At that time I ordered an orange Roadeo that I set up with
Shimano Ultegra 6800 group with some Rolf Vigor wheels. That bike was fast
and comfy and I did a bunch of riding on it. I'm a constant bike switcher
so I sold those two bikes and got an Atlantis that I set up to ride trails
with. It worked well but I wasn't loading it down enough with gear and I
also got a full suspension mtb which started taking all my time. I wound up
selling the Atlantis (wish I kept it now).

I have a brand new Appaloosa now that I love. I have it set up with a sort
of single speed style with a Paul Melvin and a two ring Silver crank in
front that I shift with a thumb friction shifter on some choco-moose bars.
The bike is fairly new to me and I only finished the build a week ago, but
the two gravel rides I've done on it so far have been wonderful.

I have to say out of the 4 rivs I've owned, my favorite is this Appaloosa
even though all of the bikes have been top notch. I would have kept the
Roadeo had I stayed riding on the road with the bike club but that kind of
riding fell out of favor for me. I like how I have the Loosa set up and it
is like riding a limousine on these gravel roads, plus the headbadge is
cool.

[RBW] Romulus rear derailleur hanger

2018-05-18 Thread Roadie1432
I am trying to get my red, S coupler-equipped Romulus on the road again. I
have posted here before, looking for decals for it, (no luck).

The problem is that the chain hits the derailleur hanger when it is on the
smallest cog. (9 speed). I looked at it and there is a metal, hex head bushing
installed in the hanger with the hex inboard. The derailleur is screwed into
this bushing. Is this the standard set up for a Romulus or is this a repair?
The hanger is straight and the drop outs are aligned. Thanks for any help.

[RBW] Re: GDMBR with Adventure Cycling

2018-05-18 Thread nick b
Yes! So I actually decided to purchase my Appaloosa while riding from
Banff to Whitefish last summer on a converted rig that blew out 3 spokes on
the rear wheel about 40 miles north of the Canadian border. Long story but
it's incredible an incredible trip. One of the best experiences of my
life. I'll ride the GDMBR one day. I actually had been lusting after an
Atlantis for well over 10 years but the Appaloosa was easier to swallow at
the time so I went for it. Had I known that they would make the chainstays
longer and sell it for damn near half the price of the USA made one I would
have waited for the Atlantis! But oh well, I'm beyond happy with my
build. Enjoy your trip. Make sure you ride Going-to-the-Sun Road both
ways. It's unbelievable.

2018-05-18 Thread dougP
What a great story with a happy outcome. Since it's approaching mid-day in
the Twin Cities, I assume the deal is done. With all of these people being
asked not to buy the bike, and of course cooperating, I think you may have
created a conspiracy. But since your BIL is an attorney, he can render an
opinion on that. After cheap bikes, he's gonna love his new one!

[RBW] Re: GDMBR with Adventure Cycling

2018-05-18 Thread Jeffrey Arita
Hi Bill,

Ah, got it on the ACA tourMy wife and I have never been up in the
Canadian Rockies by bicycle so it will be a "first-time" experience for
us. From Mexico to Butte, MT we had the good fortune to see all the riders
headed southbound. We saw ALL kinds of bikes on the Divide. Many of the
Europeans brought their standard touring bicycles (front and rear racks
with panniers) with relatively narrow Schwalbe touring tires. They got
along fine! Have a great time!

Best regards,

Jeff

2018-05-18 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
