Hey Ron, thank you for your thoughtful, educated, and thorough posts on
this topic. I, for one, have tremendously enjoyed reading them and have
learned a good deal, specifically about the differences between various
types of steel oxidation.

I didn't mean to imply that these pictures are proof that protecting the
inside of a bicycle's frame tubes from corrosion is never worthwhile under
any circumstances. I don't believe that. That's why I was careful to learn
as much of the history of the frame pictured as I could, and to spell it
all out in my post.

Personally, before I cut up this frame I had zero data points. I figure
many folks on the forum are in a similar position. Now we have one data
point. I hope that's better? And not just enough knowledge to be dangerous.

Myself, I live in the same place this frame was ridden. So the information
is especially helpful to me. The question in my mind was whether I should
disassemble a bike I bought new for $1,200 just to apply Frame Saver. I
don't think I will. On the other hand, next time I take it apart for some
other reason I will go ahead and treat it.

For me, protecting the inside of the tubes from rust isn't a "do" or
"don't" question. It's a "rush" or "do when convenient" question.

I figure I can hold off until I wear out the headset and bottom bracket,
and do it then. There's so little downside! And I like the idea that others
will enjoy these bicycles well past my own time here.

Best,
Reed

Thanks, Reed. Whenever I've bought a new or used frame, unfettered with
components, I've been sure to Framesave it. The thread a month ago made me
question whether I needed to do that, and this clinches it. I'll stop
wasting my time and money. I store my bikes inside a garage or house and
take good care of them, and won't live long enough for rust to become an
issue.

[RBW] Re: How rusty does the inside of a frame get without rust proofing? This rusty.

2018-07-01 Thread Ron Mc
kind of reminds me of the crust pride on The CABE. They call it preserving
the crust, but they're not preserving anything by leaving their bikes in
that condition - they're farming the crust.
If you spent much time on The CABE, you'll see many frames that have broken
at corrosion pits.

The point of corrosion inhibition is stop the process where it's at. You
don't know the history of every frame you buy, but if you use this type of
product inside the frame and store it indoors, it will last.
If it's actively corroding and you expose it to a continued humid
environment, it's going to keep corroding until something breaks.

If salt is involved, the reaction of moisture and air with the
chloride-bearing corrosion product frees hydrochloric acid to attack deeper
into the metal.
Passive oxide forms a tight barrier at the metal interface on the atomic
layer that impedes diffusion of iron ions away from the metal interface,
and diffusion of oxygen to the metal interface.
Red rust is not the same as passive iron oxide. Red rust is iron oxide
with chemically bonded waters of hydration. Red rust is
crystallographically out of phase with the metal grains at the interface,
preventing it from being a passive layer. Red rust is porous, lets water
and air through to the active metal surface, and outward diffusion metal
ions oxidize to their ground state away from the metal interface, leaving
an active corrosion zone at the metal interface.

At the very least, corrosion inhibition products chemically dehydrate the
rust and provide a synthetic barrier to ion diffusion, ultimately helping
the metal to form its own passive oxide layer.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wool at 100*+

2018-07-01 Thread Patrick Moore
I have stashed away 3 pairs of Ibex and Kucharik wool shorts for that ever
elusive >30 mile ride. Meanwhile, I'm happy in boxers and Rapha Randonee
shorts and, for that matter, in boxers and cut off khakis.

I gave up lycra shorts largely for reasons of comfort, not appearance -- I
hated the bulky, awkward diapers, the tight clingy fit, and the clamminess
when you cool down. Worse, for me, than synthetic jerseys.

I've been wearing synthetic summer jerseys on my last few rides, temps a
bit lower (mid 90s) and humidity a bit higher (~12%) and I have to say that
the Sugoi merino, mid weight and not lightweight, is just as comfortable.
Start clean with alcohol or vinegar in your armpits, and they don't even
stink horribly after the initial ride.

I have 2 bought-used Rivendell lightweight merino jerseys that IMO are the
ideal summer jersey; my only complaints, and these relate to my
sensibilities only, and not generally, is that they are somewhat too large
and, 2, that they tend to sag with any weight in the rear, so that your
iPhone and keys end up just above the backs of your knees. This may be why
Sugoi put a silly little right-side slit pocket on the midweight merinos I
have made by them, and not the usual, useful rear pockets. I have to say
that the 2 retro, non-merino ss wool jerseys I also have don't sag like
this -- and they are not nearly as comfortable in hot weather, either.

Next question: On the ethics of wearing bright, rayon Hawaiian shirts with
black cycling bottoms. Was tempted this morning, for church wear with my
"Rock Bros" lightweight long cycling pants, but went with the jersey. (The
RB pants, with zip ankles, fold up very nicely to above-knee hight for
actual riding, and fold down just as nicely for ecclesiastical decorum.)

You are *not* obliged to answer.

2018-07-01 Thread Ron Mc
Perhaps B17 is the wrong saddle for your riding position. Had that
discussion with someone this morning, and recommended Swallow.

Good week for riding (finished up a big project at work), and finished 130
miles for the week this morning (and won the sprint, but only by passing
Daniel at the last traffic signal - he should have had me by a block - 4 of
us in the lead group were 3 minutes ahead of the next group).
Brutal sun this afternoon, and a good afternoon for an indoor project.

My highest-mileage Brooks was showing front frame through the leather, and
needed a rare stretch bolt tighten (quarter-turn).
Expected, and accumulated stretch from this summer's sweat.
So I laced it this afternoon to get that last 5000 or so miles before I
replace it with the new (closeout) saddle I have stashed - it's essentially
back to new shape, with just a little pucker around the rivets.

This isn't a good back-lit photo, with the exception it shows the smooth
lift you get in place of a center ridge when you lace a stretched Brooks.

Re: [RBW] Thanks Grant

2018-07-01 Thread Christopher Murray
DEFINITELY NOT echoing Joe’s thoughts here. If you’ve been around long enough
then you know Grant well enough to know he isn’t trying to be divisive. Caring
about people and families is always a noble thing, right? In regards to this
issue, I suspect there are more varied opinions amongst this group than the
loudest (and crudest) voices would suggest. Voiceing our opinions and talking
about them is not divisive. Name calling? Intolerance? Self-righteousness?
Refusing to support a bicycle company because the owner expressed a different
opinion than yours? These things are divisive and we’d be better as a community
with less of them rather than more.

I bet if you emailed Grant he’d respond. Because that’s what adults do: listen
to each other and treat others with respect.

Re: [RBW] Re: I got a new Clem!

2018-07-01 Thread Joe Bernard
"You’re probably the only guy in the world who’s owned all three."

True, I didn't think of that! I had a bronzey green Clem L which I sold after
ordering the Cheviot cuz who needs two step-throughs then I got the mustard H
cuz I always wanted it and this all makes sense right? ;-)

Lightning Bolt: This is the proverbial 'fast bike, slow rider' situation. The
low-trail steering was an acquired taste for me..it steers a bit like a folding
bike or recumbent, which took my brain a while to accept because it doesn't
LOOK like it should. It's very maneuverable and fun, not a bike I think of for
just going for a cruise. It has a "let's go!" attitude, and the big brakes and
tires accentuate this by making you feel you can ride over anything, then stop
on a dime from ridiculous speeds. Hence why it works for me as an ebike.

Cheviot: A road/country bike; lovely thin lugged tubes, gorgeous paint with
creamy panels; the way the bike looks and rides makes me wonder why - outside
of racing - we ever needed "high-bar bikes" instead of mixtes. If we'd started
here everybody would ride them now.

Clem H: It's what Grant thinks it is, a mountain bike. Big-ole tubes, long
stays, long cockpit. With Boscos it feels like that old Schwinn ballon-tire
cruiser you had as a kid, but lighter, better handling, and with real gears and
brakes. Clem is your bombproof post-apocalypse dystopia bike, it will ride over
or through anything. Everyone should have one.

I like them all!

https://photos.app.goo.gl/LbF8eMQdD5c51dVv5

This is a 1987 Centurion Ironman Expert made from Tange No. 1, aka SAE
4130. Almost all steel bikes are made from 4130 or something *very* similar
these days, so this tubeset is nicely representative.

The bike was never treated with framesaver or anything else, and was ridden
on and off for 30 years. I believe it spent the whole time in California.
Most recently it was ridden around San Francisco, so fairly humid, moderate
temperatures, some salt in the air.

I've been feeling bad about not Frame Saver-ing my Velo Routier for a year
and a half. I'm gonna stop feeling bad now.

[RBW] Chain length for long board frames

I just did my usual eyeball method. Put the chain in a couple different gears
and see what it looks like. Had a funny moment when I first put the chain on. I
hadn't worked with 10 speed before and when the chain was 8 inches too short I
looked at the package and it said 10s and I thought it was a short chain. So I
called my shop and they noted the link number and said it was the longest chain
available.

Trip back to LBS for another chain.

Re: [RBW] Thanks Grant

2018-07-01 Thread hugh flynn
Having people in the same place with different viewpoints on topics
(greasing square tapers anyone?) doesn’t count as division unless we agree
to be excessively fragile in our collective worldview. I, for one, can take
it. It’s a bit of a shocker, but I’ve come to understand that good people
can view things differently than I do and still be good people.

Discussion is boring and if we believe that holding a different opinion
that the “group” is somehow bad. Welcome to life. It’s not a matter of
cultivating a fragile and artificial hegemony, it’s about understanding how
to listen to, learn from, and respect people who aren’t 100% like ourselves
in all aspects.

So, yes, thanks Grant!
