[RBW] Re: Don't Miss Sights Around Las Vegas

2019-05-10 Thread REC (Roberta)
In case your plans are flexible and these might appeal to you:

I was at Valley of Fire two years ago with the wrong shoes. You'll be
hiking in red sand that once was part of the mountain. I recommend high
top hiking boots to keep the sand out of your shoes.
Death Valley. Bring a paper map. You lose cell connection partway between
LV and Death Valley.
Mob Museum. VERY interesting (history of how LV came to be), more than I
thought it would be.
Hoover Dam. Take the longest tour you can. Awesome.
Red Rock Canyon. Lots of good hikes, from easy to difficult.

Thanks David. I’m asking about extension I guess. Can’t find that measurement
anywhere, though I suspect it’s in the 10-13cm range. The horizontal distance
from the stem shaft out to the handlebar. Essentially I’m wondering what Tallux
stem would give equivalent reach.

Thanks everyone who's reached out with parts! Here's what I'm still looking

-36 or 40 hole 650b wheelset Velocity Atlas or Cliffhanger or anything
burly and cheap!

-Dynamo Hub (wishfully!)

-Cassette: Shimano CS-HG400 11-36

-Derailleur: 9 spd Shimano Deore RD M591 SGS

-Shifters: 9 spd Shimano Deore SL M590 or 9 spd Thumb

As said before...I'm looking to do the build right, but also can't spend a
ton of money... so not too worried about cosmetic condition as long as
things work proper.

If you happen to have any of these parts please let me know, contact
off-list via PM and thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Plus Tires for GBW

2019-05-10 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Schwalbe Nobby Nic 27.5 x 2.8" Addix Apex Speedgrip SnakeSkin (Whew!) initial
impressions (all of five miles in, pavement and dirt roads and trails, no
technical single track yet).

Installing:
I was needlessly concerned when I received these that they would be way too
stiff. The casing feels stiffer than the Maxxis Ikon+'s casing, the tire they
replace, but the Maxxis have been ridden by me a few hundred miles and for
whatever the demo bike did before heading my way and becoming Beorn. As
esoteric as Schwalbe's rubber compounds are, they do know their stuff. I've
also wondered with increased tire width how much more fortification is needed
both for protection against sidewall rocks and just because there is more tire.
I have no idea, and hope to one day try out a Rene Herse level supple 2.8"
tire, whatever that may be. I installed these with tubes, as I don't do the
tubeless slop shinnannigans (at least until they sort out the need for
trailside fiddling and goop).

No issues installing. As is often the case, I did need to go into the rim well
with the tire bead to have room to get the last bit on.

Nobby Nic has a soft, pliable rubber feel, and though the casing feels beefy,
it also feels compliant, much more so than the Ikon. The profile is rounder,
with the knobbies and profile giving an impression of a plus sized Steilacoom.

Initial Ride
I rode at the same pressure front and rear as my Ikons had for this mornings
ride for direct comparison (15 front, 20 rear). Compared with the Ikons, Nic is
a plush ride and rides much more like a supple tire than I would have
suspected. The nobs on pavement are quiet, possibly quieter than the Ikon, also
a surprise, though I expected something similar to the Steilacooms because of
the soft rubber and nobby pattern similarities. Nic didn't feel slower, though
almost 200 grams heavier per tire. I'll see if I notice it when climbing well
known trails next time I get that far out.

I am very hopeful this will be my tire of choice for daily riding and
bikepacking. The big test was if it was more supple than the Ikon, and it is
without a doubt. It is Steilacoomesque smooth on pavement, and the knob pattern
is much the same, so I expect will grip rocks and roots well. Schwalbe designed
this to be an aggressive all-rounder and that description fits so far.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] stripped derailleur hanger threads

2019-05-10 Thread Ian A
Drop-out saver. Instal and forget it ever happened. All other options remain
open after using the drop-out saver. It's a cheap and effectively guaranteed
solution. The one issue could be the chain fouling on the d.o. saver in the
highest gear (smallest cog). I had to file my d.o. saver a mm or two to make
the flange thin enough to clear the chain.

On my afflicted drop out, I made the hole as small as possible in order to
achieve a press fit. Doesn't exactly keep the d.o. saver fully captive, but
makes it less fiddly when threading in the derailleur.

I don't remember a dent there; though there might have been one. I
think that when i shipped it to Rob (on the west coast) - i didn't do a
great packing job, and it arrived with a dent from a loose piece in the

Phil, thanks. From what I understand, the original owners wife had a rive mixte
painted the same green and had saluki stickers and head badge applied by Riv

That's true. Still, any Rivendell model, stock or not, that I personally
want, will cost more than a Rohlof -- which is not a big debating point,
since the Rohlof price is still more than I care to pay (tho' I reserve the
right to change my mind).

The only Shimano 3-speed hub I recall riding was that on my daughter's 24"
wheel Electra Townie "3i"; that had a coaster brake and, honestly, was
rather nice. I sometimes think that, but for aesthetic scruples, one of
those would make a nice multiple gear + rear brake system for my 1999 Joe
Starck custom fixie, which doesn't have a rear brake.

I'd be interested to hear of others' experience with the 8 speed Alfine.
I've read quite a few reports on Der Web and on the whole the reports are
positive; more so than for the 11. (Not that anyone really needs a 307%

I read up about those; unfortunately, the OL spacing and the spoking don't
fit. Otherwise, they might be the ticket for an occasional rear wheel.

 recently been riding the S3X, but with freewheel (17 t, 48 t ring, 24.75"
 tire, 70-53-44 gi).

I'm out of shape for hills -- I generally ride mostly N-S along the
River valley (at just about exactly 1 mile high; 4980 at lowest point near
me, IIRC), which is dead flat, eking out my workload in strong southwestery
 winds.

So on the way to the library I decided to try a nice detour west of me
toward Boca Negra canyon, and see what I could do to the short but sharp
climb. In "hill shape" I can make it 2/3 of the way in a 67" gear on a
light bike; but I've not yet cleared teh steepest part.

It went well. The grade starts out at 3 or 4% and then quickly steepens
to 9 10, 13 before decreasing to 10 and then again 4 near the summit.

In shape I could easily do the steep bit in the 53" with effort, but
the 44 allowed me to clear it -- standing, of course -- with only moderate
exhaustion, so to speak: I was tired, but I could have done at least a bit
 more.

I'd love to replace the fw with a fixed cog, but 70" is just too low to
spin at any downhills speed, and for me, at least, the huge lash is just
too annoying to tolerate. So fw it is.

Segueing: Give me advice on hub gears with these qualities:

Nice! I've always been on the look out for a green canti Saluki. I almost
ordered a Waterford AHH, and requested Riv to put Saluki decals, canti, and
paint it Saluki green. But the modifications added up, and I decided
against it.

Hope you have fun with it!

[RBW] Re: Brifter setup for my Sam: looking for options

2019-05-10 Thread phil k
If you ride predominantly on the hoods, I'd look at gevenalle. They are
indexed, but also have a friction mode should you ever need it. Super
comfortable and convenient. Also allows you to dump your cassette when
shifting, instead of shifting each gear one by one.

[RBW] Re: Brifter setup for my Sam: looking for options

2019-05-10 Thread Adam in Indiana
That SRAM setup Nick posted sounds like an awesome solution, I may try that in
the future.

On my Sam I currently have Shimano's 11 speed SLX mountain cassette (11-40) and
derailleur with a single ring up front. I use Microshift's bar-end shifter
made especially for them, since Shimano doesn't make a drop bar shifter for
that derailleur. This is the same shifter Gevenalle uses on some of their
brake levers.

Though it's 11 speed, as mentioned, it fits on an 8-10 speed hub, since the
largest gears can fit out over the lip of the hub on the spoke side.

As a side note, I use mine in friction mode...feels much better than indexed,
and I've never had problems finding a gear.

Re: [RBW] Re: Steep but short hills on 2003 Custom using S3X hub

2019-05-10 Thread lconley
You do not have to buy a custom to get a lugged Riv frame, There are still
non-TIGed production frames - Atlantis, etc.

The steel 3 speed Shimano is the only hub that I have ever had that broke
spokes, but maybe it was the bike (Trek Belville).

The Alfines make a lot of noise (even brand new) and are sensitive to exact
adjustment - the "indexing" takes place in the shifter, not the hub. The
gear spacing is uneven. The hubs are the same for belt or chain, just
different sprockets. I have been told that the top of the line Jagwire
Slick-Lube liner housing helps with the shifting, but have not tried it yet.

Certain models of Bendix two speed hubs are direct drive top gear - the
stripe color on the hub is how you can tell. Not sure which is the color
indicates the underdrive models.

[RBW] Re: stripped derailleur hanger threads

2019-05-10 Thread John Casteen
I agree with Chris-- the dropout saver looks like it should work.

Another approach, if for whatever reason you decide not to go that route:
step up to the next size mounting bolt, drill and tap the dropout to accept
it, and if necessary drill the derailleur mounting hole to the appropriate
diameter. If you decide down the road that you want a different
derailleur, you still have the dropout saver as an option.

Love my SimpleOne (bought from list member tc) and also can’t believe no one
has jumped to buy this one!

Someone please get it before I buy it because it’s just such a good deal and
with the excuse that it’s for my wife even though it’s probably too big for her.

[RBW] stripped derailleur hanger threads

2019-05-10 Thread Christopher Cote
I've never had to use the Wheels dropout saver, but it seems a perfectly
reasonable solution. The only thing you're drilling out are threads that are so
damaged as to be worthless.

Another, possibly more invasive, solution is to have someone braze some brass
into the threads, and tap threads into that. It will burn some paint off, and
brass is softer than steel, so those threads won't be very strong.

[RBW] stripped derailleur hanger threads

2019-05-10 Thread jandrews
Surprisingly this topic hasn't been covered all that much on this list.
my 2009 Sam has stripped threads in the derailleur hanger tab.
I noticed it when doing some recent drivetrain work on it and realize I was
probably riding it with a loose derailleur for some time.
I was replacing installing a Wolftooth Roadlink when I discovered I
couldn't sink the bolt in far enough to make a secure connection. When I
reverted back to my original derailleur, the same issue presented itself.
It seems like the most outboard threads are the ones that are stripped and
the very inner threads still have grip.
So, my query here is , what should I do.
I've been recommended the Wheels Mfg. Dropout Savers which seem like a very
smart, very strong fix to this problem, but the thought of drilling out the
hanger tab feels like almost a last resort.
I guess the real last resort is taking it to a builder to put on a new rear
dropout but I don't really want to do that right now either.

Are there any other fixes to this problem besides the Dropout Savers?
And...has anyone here used the Dropout Savers successfully?
thanks

[RBW] Re: Closest geared Riv to QuickOne?

Yes, that's his question.

I'm not the font of Riv-knowledge that others on this forum are, but I have
a Quickbeam, a Simpleone, and a Hilsen, and I lovelovelove the QB and the
Hilsen and think their ride qualities are similar. I don't know if they
*should* be similar---seems to me the Hilsen should be a bit stouter---but
to me they feel similar.
