Re: [RBW] First Rivendell — sizing question

2019-06-05 Thread Joe Bernard
Mark probably got a Roadeo in his size down to 18 pounds, he's a little guy and
that frame in all sizes seems built to be a Mark's Bike, i.e, thin light tubes.
You won't get there with any other production Rivs, so pick the one you like
looking at the most.

I recall that RBW advertised an 18 lb build by Mark on either the Roadini or
Roadeo a few years ago. My '95 Road is currently 18 lbs. My Ram is 22.  I don't
think a Hillborne could get that light. I used to have a Saluki and it ws in
the 25 - 27 range. My point was that no steel bike was going to be super light
as the OP mentioned weight for carrying on and off public transport.

[RBW] Re: First Rivendell — sizing question

2019-06-05 Thread Drw
i agree that the weight between these frames is negligible in comparison to
other components, racks, wheels, tires saddles etc. for me, this decision
would come down to brake type. i like v's or canti's and slightly wider
tire clearance, so i'd go with a sam.

You and i have the same pbh. I rode a 56 sam (not sure they make them in
that size anymore) and was very happy with drop bars. When i tried
albatross bars, they made the bike feel too small. so if you were going
with swept back bars, id size up to a 58cm. i dont know how san marcos'
are sized, but not all rivs are sized similarly, so its worth a call to
them to get on the proper size.

[RBW] Re: Suggestions for best cycling shades?

2019-06-05 Thread Garth

This year I bought a set of Wiley X Saber Advanced sun-glasses and they
offer a great wrap and shield. The nosepiece is and temples are adjustable
so they can fit a wide range of faces. They may be marketed as
shooting/safety/bulletproof glasses but they make great riding glasses. I
bought the 3 lens kit model #308 that included a Light Rust, Grey and Clear
interchangeable lenses plus hard case. I pretty much just wear the Light
Rust which is about 50% VLT as it's nice even in full sun. You'd like the
Grey option which are sold with that lens alone as model #302. These are
not flyweight flexy glasses so if that's what you prefer look elsewhere.
The quality is top notch and I don't say that lightly. They stay where you
put them, and even come with an optional strap if you want to use it
instead of the arms. All the parts of these are replaceable, the most
expensive being the lenses for $22. These beat the heck out of anything
I've ever tried marketed for cycling and such. While scratch resistant,
they warn you the lenses are not scratch proof as their primary purpose is
protection from high velocity objects. They have no funny coating on the
lenses either so they are very easy to clean.

[RBW] Re: First Rivendell — sizing question

2019-06-05 Thread Ed Carolipio
Just wanted to note that using a bike through multimodal transport isn't
driven by the weight of the frame so I advise against using that factor to
make a final decision.

Also, if you're considering the (now retired Soma) San Marcos, I suggest
also considering the (mostly retired) Roadini as well. No 57cms on
rivbike.com, but check these boards as they do come up for sale or call Riv
since sometimes they have stock which they haven't posted.

Finally, I agree with other folks who've said to go bigger when in between
two sizes.

Re: [RBW] First Rivendell — sizing question

2019-06-05 Thread Eric Karnes
Regarding weight, I agree with Jeffrey. I'm not familiar with the San
Marcos, but I've had a 61cm MUSA Homer. Built up with reasonably light
components (dura-ace / open pro wheels, old ultegra drivetrain, compass
tires) it was around 24ish pounds without bags and water bottles. I
personally found it nice and light for my tastes and honestly I don't think
you'd notice a sizable difference vs the San Marcos (or the Hilsen) carting
it on and off the train. I carried mine up and down two flights of stairs
everyday with no problem. So get the frame you like best.

Regarding sizing, I will say that I too was in between sizes (a 62cm is my
sweet spot) on the AHH and I regret going with the smaller 61cm. I've since
sold it, and if I wasn't moving overseas, I would snatch up that 63cm that
Bill has for sale. Although if it stays up for sale, I might buy it anyway
and ship it over. Someone remove that temptation please!

Eric

The Smith Pivlock Overdrive works really well for my very East Asian face:
https://www.smithoptics.com/us/c/PivLock%E2%84%A2-Overdrive/p/OVPCDMMOB
Lightweight,
swappable lenses, and has really good grip when wet with sweat. Currently
on my second pair.

I also ran the Oakley half jacket "Asian fit" for a long time:
https://www.oakley.com/en-us/product/W0OO9153 IMO that sits better on the
nose than the Smiths but they're a bit heavier and slips more when wet than
the Smiths.

Yes, it's an internal reset. It's either fixable or it isn't. If it's

You will love riding a Rivendell. They are wonderful. And beautiful.

Re: [RBW] Suggestions for best cycling shades?

2019-06-05 Thread Keith Weaver
I wear Native Nanos, and bought a pair of the Nano2 (squared) a little
later. It seems like these have been discontinued, but Native has similar
frames available now. Many of their models include their sportflex (light
orange) lens as well as a dark lens. Lots of their frame styles provide
good wind protection, and the lens interchangeability can be handy.

REI carries them, you may be able to find the brand elsewhere as well.

Cheers,
Keith

[RBW] First Rivendell — sizing question

2019-06-05 Thread Fullylugged
The comparative weight of the frames matters much less than the weight of the
components (especially the tires, which can get quite heavy) that you assemble
on to it. A reasonable steel bike build will be 22 lbs or more. A racist build
will be down to 18 lbs or so. Of the models you mention and the use you
describe, the Hillborne might be your best choice with plush fabric bead tires.
Gravel Kings even. But as a song goes, "You're a winner either way." ("I Feel
Lucky" M. C. Carpenter)

[RBW] Suggestions for best cycling shades?

2019-06-05 Thread Patrick Moore
Asking on the RBW list after having asked on the Boblist, in case this list
has cycling glasses periti who don't read the Boblist.

I've been using 2 pr Tifosi shades. One is photochromatic, and that one
seems to block the wind sufficiently to keep my eyes from turning red after
10 miles; it also stays put securely on my Asian-ish* nose. But this pair
doesn't get dark enough for our mile-high sun in mid summer at noon -- when
the light makes the Santa Monica boardwalk at summer noon feel like the
winter solstice, and I'm not kidding. I use this pair on cloudy days and at
night.

The other pair is also Tifosi, and dark enough, and this is my go-to pair,
but it doesn't block the wind sufficiently, and it doesn't stay on my nose.
This pair may be older, as it was at least second hand, original source
unknown. My eyes turn red, especially on windy days which kick up dust and
pollen; out here, we don't have twee little green grass verges, the sides
of the roads are gravel and sand.

I realize that, after saddles and bars, shades are probably the most
personal choice in riding kit, but can anyone, particularly anyone of east
Asian ancestry, suggest some options?

I'd happily ride bare-eyed, but again, dust and pollen and wind make that
impractical.

Thanks

[RBW] First Rivendell — sizing question

2019-06-05 Thread Karl
I would ride a 59 San with a 84 PBH... so I would look there. My preference is
to go bigger. Every time I have went smaller, it’s made me regret my purchase.
What kind of riding would be more what would steer the decision than lifting to
the train. Also, it would be worth a call to Will over at Rivendell. I see this
as a life purchase, so spending an extra $400 for a true Rivendell matched by
an employee who knows is totally worth it in my opinion. Hope this helps!

[RBW] First Rivendell — sizing question

2019-06-05 Thread littlerico
Hi all,

I am in the process of trying to figure out which Rivendell will best suit my
PBH and needs. I intend to use it primarily for commuting (~10 miles per day),
getting around town, plus longer weekend rides.

The three bikes I’ve been considering are the Soma San Marcos (I know not
technically Rivendell), AHH, and Sam Hillborne.

My height is 5’9” and PBH is 85.5. This puts me between sizes on the AHH, in
the middle with Sam Hillborne, and unclear on the San Marcos.

At this point I would prefer a San Marcos if it fits well as it seems to be a
bit lighter which would be helpful for getting it on and off the train, as well
as price. The Sam seems to be the heaviest, but I’m square in the middle of the
PBH range for the 55 which sounds like it would fit well.

Would the San Marcos 57cm be too large? If one is between sizes on an AHH,
would bigger or small be better?

Thank you!

[RBW] Re: Rivendell tandem builds

2019-06-05 Thread Jonathan K.
Paul, I'm glad you revived this thread. I'm on the preorder list for a
medium orange Hubbuhubbuh. I also ordered the Silver cranks and the
Velocity wheels.

As far as steerer length, why not leave it uncut for now? Just throw some
spacers on there and cut it later on once you have the bar position dialed
in.

MG, thanks for the detailed write up and picture. Most builds I've seen
have some sort of swept back bar. Good to know other bars work well, too. I
was leaning toward the new Wavie bar for mine. I recently put a set on my
Surly Big Dummy and really like them on there, so I think I might try them
on the tandem too.

I'd like to echo Paul in requesting any build ideas, advice, reviews,
pictures, etc. The new batch of frames are supposed to be shipping this
month. Anyone else expecting/planning?

Thanks,
Jonathan

ideally with some sort of baskets/panniers to get groceries.

Also: have PBH of 85, saddle height 75 and am 5’11” tall. With a small

Re: [RBW] RD compatible with index shifters?

2019-06-05 Thread Dave Redmon
Thanks for your offer, Bill. Is an internal "reset" of that inner ring
required? (I can't budge it even a little.) Is that something my LBS can
handle? To be fair, my LBS mech did not install the shifters on the
handlebars--I did.

I have a set of those clem pedals that I would be happy to send you for
free if you can't find a grey or silver set. Mine are like the Riv kind in
black and worn but in pretty good shape. Spin great with no issues. I am
in central PA so no problem mailing them off to you if you decide to go
that way.

2019-06-05 Thread Dave Redmon
Hey Bill--

When I try to follow your directions, the lever is sticking almost straight
up just before the jacked up movable part of the mechanism comes up against
the fixed part, blocking access to a full joining of the two halves. This
doesn't look right to me, but I seem to be unable to "reset/adjust" the
movable section so it is oriented correctly.

[RBW] WTB: inexpensive silver or grey thin-ish pedals with reflectors for riding in sneakers

2019-06-05 Thread REC (Roberta)
Phil and I agreed to the sale of his AHH,
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/bLEiFQYqK0c , and
now I need pedals. These $22 Clem Smith pedals,
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/pedals/products/vp-538-black-pedal ,
would be perfect if they came in grey or silver. I ride in sneakers.

Does anyone have similar inexpensive (but not cheaply made) thin grey or
sliver pedals with reflectors that you want to sell? They should be
mechanically good, but doesn't matter if they are visually not perfect
(they are pedals, after all). If not, I'll order the Riv ones this Friday,
June 7. Other than esthetics, they are just what I'm looking for and if no
one has anything I'll buy these and will be perfectly happy with them.

I'm not looking to spend more than $30 including freight and they need to
get to Philadelphia 19154 by June 14. I'll be getting the bike on June 15
and Phil has graciously offered to install them for me.

Please PM me. I'll be checking my spam folder too and will reply to all
PMs that I received them.

Thanks,
Roberta

[RBW] Ergon grips/ map, waive, Jones bars

2019-06-05 Thread Christopher Cote
I have the Ergon GP1 Biocork grips on Kalloy "Trekking" bars on my Atlantis.
That's a 40-ish degree swept bar. I like it very much, but wish it was a tad
wider. The grips are perfect, though. If whatbars.com ever gets the Wavie bar
uploaded, I may see if that will give me a similar sweep, but more width.

I've found them excellent on Jitensha bars, which are shorter than the rest
mentioned here, but similar shape. I do wonder about them on bars with a
little more sweep, though. I feel like the design is optimisted for
straight bars, but I've seen plenty on Map type bars.

Re: [RBW] Ergon grips/ map, waive, Jones bars

2019-06-05 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Ergon grips have become my first choice for any bar that will take them.
Ergon makes a grip specifically for bars that sweep back, wavie bars and
similar - I think it's the GC1 model - I've found it in both synthetic cork
and standard rubber.

That said, I've found sweep angle to be important for my wrists - I either
need a lot of sweep, nearly straight back, or not too much. I've used a
Jones bar, with Ergon grips, and the grips improved the experience for me,
but the sweep angle was still problematic and presented issues over long
rides. I gave up on my first set of Jones bars, but recently brought them
back into the picture when I bought a Jones bike - they've been working
well this time around with a reduced stem length, bringing the swept
portion of the bar closer to me. These are just some data points, both in
support of Ergon grips, but also for consideration of other elements that
may inform your comfort on wavie-like bars.

[RBW] Re: Grip Monarchs?

2019-06-05 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
I got a silver pair from Rivendell a few weeks ago to use with my new-to-me
Joe Appaloosa. I had a pair of $20 Clem pedals installed as a place holder
and these are a big improvement. I'm used to retention of some sort: toe
clips and straps or SPD or Look/SL style. It is amazing how well the little
pedal spikes retain your feet over all but the biggest bumps. The overall
length of the pedals, 4 ½ ", makes for great support and I feel less like I
need to wear SPD compatible shoes. Indeed, softer, running shoes do a
better job of holding a position and the long, wide platform of the pedal
obviates the need for a stiff soled shoe.

Still getting used to them but very happy so far!
