Thanks for nailing that for me, masmojo. I had been side-eying my Clem for
motor, and now realize that's the reason why my lizard brain didn't want me
to do it.

I wouldn't want the CHG to be an e-bike (just to loop back to the topic)
but like you all I'm struggling to figure out what niche it would fill
amongst their offerings.

Hey Mark, I was thinking the same thing but I only know what google maps thinks
is the right route to Poughkeepsie. Is there one clearly favorable route?
Mostly rail trail? And concerns with catching that last 9:45 train... how long
might that ride take moving at a spirited yet leisurely pace? Clearly I need to
do some research, but if you wouldn't mind sharing your thoughts.
Thanks

It's like a form of anticipation, but as an adult, you can't hold that
anticipation nearly as long; anticipating for weeks the last day of school,
the night before Christmas. Remember when it was "4-6 weeks for delivery"
for stuff on the back of the cereal box? But we don't have time for
anticipation any more. And anyway, there's probably an app to do it for us.

Or maybe it's more like finding a twenty in the suit jacket you haven't
worn since the last wedding...or, at my age, funeral.

that is good would be the Lower Awosting Parking lot (west of the main

The parking lot up by the lake is great as you avoid the steep path up.
Never fear as if you park in Lower Awosting, you will get to enjoy the
 nice
walk up (or ride if you got the gear for it) and you won't have to go up
the hill at the end of the ride!. So think of it like a roller coaster,
 you
gotta get up the launch hill, then we roll up and down
enjoying breathtaking views along the way. I think there is cell service
for most of the ride but if you want, you can download the route here.

 https://ridewithgps.com/trips/3699799

At any rate, I am driving a Black Honda ridgeline, (grey haired guy on
a orange and black Sam) we can gather up on top and visit till the campers
and late comers arrive. If memory serves, there is a paved lot on the very
top and a gravel lot, just below it. I am thinking that I will hang out up
on the top somewhere around the kiosk maybe making coffee and waiting on
the fog to clear... it will be good!

Some info about the area...if you are coming in from the NYS Thruway,
you will head west on the state road towards New Paltz, New Paltz is a
college town, there are restaurants, motels, stores...even a starbucks!
then continue on up the Mt to Minnewaska.

Also, if you have time or are staying over and you want some other
riding, there is a Rail Trail starting down town that will run north and
south, some of it is unpaved. Also the rail trail running east from town
will connect you to the "Walkway over the Hudson" state park...not to be
missed to ride across the Hudson river on a car free bridge, really nice
and this trail continues east for miles, nice flat paved.

For those that want more challenge, there are lots of gravel routes and
road routes...just consult Ride with GPS or some such app. I think that
 the
carriage trail loop will be great for a meetup and social ride.

Better get your say in now. The moderator will be deleting this thread when
it is spotted. The last one was a little more nuanced. Here I feel I'm
being beaten over the head with statistics. 40,000 people die in their cars
every year, countless others are injured. Will you be giving up your car?
Not letting your kid learn to drive? Almost 6000 pedestrians were killed by
cars in 2015. Should all pedestrians wear full body armor?

Why is it that the greater the percentage of traffic that is by bike in a
particular place, the less likely it is people will be wearing helmets?
Since it's not currently a law in most places for adults to wear one, why
do people feel the need or the right to tell others what to do, or to make
moral judgements? Just curious.

[RBW] Re: Which kind of shellac "flakes" do you use for cotton tape? Seed, button, flake, or dewaxed???

2019-09-19 Thread John Phillips
Hi Mat,

Funny, I didn't notice you had expressed the cut in a ratio, I just
read your meaning and knew what you were talking about. Thanks for sharing
your experience with layering Newbaum's and shellac penetration, that's a
big help. I'll stick with a 1 lb to 1.5 lb cut for the first few
applications to make sure the first layer gets its share of shellac. I've
seen twine shellac'ed with a 3 lb cut which didn't penetrate the twine at
all and flaked off within a month's use. I'm doing all this on albatross
bars with bar end shifters, so I'm planning on taping from shifter to brake
lever, then from brake lever toward the stem.

I have a tan leather saddle, so I'm planning on taping with either
copper or burnt orange Newbaum's shellac'ed with amber-caramel Kusmi #1
buttom lac. I almost went with a warm dark brown button lac paired with
chocolate Newbaum's, but then I would have convince my wife I needed a a
new brown or black Berthoud saddle. That really wouldn't go over too well.
;-)

I may try your idea of reverse wrapping the bottom layer of Newbaum's,
at least between shifters and brake levers, sounds interesting!

Thanks again for all your info,

John

I am not on the Facebook so I can't post but we can gather on the lawn

you can see from the parking lot. Early arrivals will be able to park on

peeping so not so crowded. Where or how do I drop a pin?

so when ya get parked, just make your way over towards the grassy area
between the parking lots and the lake, I will try to scope out a picnic
table or 2.

in the mornings, its generally dog walkers and hikers so it should be
all good. Once a few of us find each other, it will become obvious

one helpful thing to print or download is the park map, but they

Some info about the area...if you are coming in from the NYS Thruway, you will head west on the state road towards New Paltz, New Paltz is a college town, there are restaurants, motels, stores...even a starbucks! then continue on up the Mt to Minnewaska.

Also, if you have time or are staying over and you want some other riding, there is a Rail Trail starting down town that will run north and south, some of it is unpaved. Also the rail trail running east from town will connect you to the "Walkway over the Hudson" state park...not to be missed to ride across the Hudson river on a car free bridge, really nice and this trail continues east for miles, nice flat paved.

For those that want more challenge, there are lots of gravel routes and road routes...just consult Ride with GPS or some such app. I think that the carriage trail loop will be great for a meetup and social ride.

Right, the cut is in pounds, not ratios, my bad.. Anyway, I had two layers
of Newbaum's (outer layer shellaced a few times over a year or two) that I
unwrapped this summer and I found out that the shellac did not saturate
through to the bottom layer. I rode in the rain frequently and it was not
compromised in any way so I don't think there is a need to try to saturate
that under layer. My first shellac job I did a 1.5 pound cut, and that was
pretty thin, but not overly so and could be good for a first timer.
However, all subsequent times has been with a 2 pound cut.

What color Newbaum's are you thinking?

Oh, if you are double wrapping, you could either do the harlequin pattern,
or if you are wrapping normally, try wrapping the under layer in the
opposite direction as the outer layer. It added a nice visual texture to
my handlebars. And since you are shellacing, you don't have to wrap from

everything tucked under them, so no need for twine and the tape didn't have

I've ridden that a bunch of times. Went to William and Mary, nearby
college. A bud and I used to ride the Parkway to the James River, cross via
ferry, lunch at the Surry House, ride 10 up to the Harrison Bridge (outside
of Richmond) ride 5 back to Williamsburg. It was an all day ride. Probably
100 miles. Lot of history on that part of the James. I rode a Raleigh Comp.
He rode a Motobecane.

Somehow we did this regularly in the days before Rando, fat tires, and
energy bars. We'd pack a tuna sandwich and a can of Bud for the Harrison
Bridge before taking 5 back.

Yes, I think insta-ready all-road bikes have been *en vogue* for several

Yep, I have both. I did a nice loop on the RANS/Copenhagen Tuesday, then a
shorter shop-and-ride on my Bike Friday yesterday. This choice will in the next
few months evolve to a Riv/Copenhagen and a no-motor Riv Custom, which is hard

Joe, I think what you are talking about is Apple's vs. Oranges in the Ebike
sphere. I guess technically it's still an Ebike, but it's different at the same
time. Which kinda goes back to what I said about regular bikes and Ebikes
diverging.
The "Ebike" is evolving so fast and the bikes and their components are
increasingly not cross compatible. Different everything; spokes, rims, tires,
brake levers.
Yeah, some people are passionate about ebikes and they are such an eye opener
that I sort of understand the enthusiasm initially, but I think it wears thin
pretty fast. Once the "new" wears off. The Ebike is carving out it's own niche
in-between bikes & motorcycles.
If you can dip your toes in both pools with the Copenhagen wheel, I guess
that's a good thing!
As I alluded to earlier my first two thoughts after getting my Radwagon were
"wow, everyone should have one of these " and "hmmm. . . I wish I was riding a
real bike" it's the sort of contradiction that only a dedicated cyclist would
think of.

[RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2019-09-19 Thread Joe Bernard
What an ebike is depends massively on which one you're riding and what it's
for. My current ride is a RANS Crank Forward with a Copenhagen Wheel which is
shortly to be transferred to a Riv A/R. This is pedal assist only - no throttle
- and freewheels well enough to be run some miles at 0 assist, effectively
turning the ebike into a bike which can get a virtual tailwind on hills and in
traffic. It's a bicycle.

OTOH my friend's husband has a throttle-only cruiser which I'm not sure he even
pedals. He doesn't have a particular interest in cycling as an exercise
activity, he just likes to get out there with the wife and kids who use regular
bikes. His version is more of a moped.

In general I think they qualify as their own thing on the line:
bike-ebike-moped-scooter-motorcycle-car. And some people are very passionate
about them.

2019-09-19 Thread finny

I am going to get on site early Saturday am, I will try to park in the
Lower Awosting Parking lot and ride to the top, but if you want you can
park up in the lot by the lake (up on top), if that is full, the other
lot that is good would be the Lower Awosting Parking lot (west of the
main entrance).

The parking lot up by the lake is great as you avoid the steep path up.
Never fear as if you park in Lower Awosting, you will get to enjoy the
nice walk up (or ride if you got the gear for it) and you won't have to
go up the hill at the end of the ride!. So think of it like a roller
coaster, you gotta get up the launch hill, then we roll up and down
enjoying breathtaking views along the way. I think there is cell
service for most of the ride but if you want, you can download the route
here.

https://ridewithgps.com/trips/3699799

At any rate, I am driving a Black Honda ridgeline, (grey haired guy on a
orange and black Sam) we can gather up on top and visit till the campers
and late comers arrive. If memory serves, there is a paved lot on the
very top and a gravel lot, just below it. I am thinking that I will hang
out up on the top somewhere around the kiosk maybe making coffee and
waiting on the fog to clear... it will be good!

Also the rail trail running east from
town will connect you to the "Walkway over the Hudson" state park...not
to be missed to ride across the Hudson river on a car free bridge,
really nice and this trail continues east for miles, nice flat paved.

For those that want more challenge, there are lots of gravel routes and
road routes...just consult Ride with GPS or some such app. I think that
the carriage trail loop will be great for a meetup and social ride.

[RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2019-09-19 Thread masmojo
Mark, I would be inclined to agree that the ebike has a lot in common with a
scooter, moped, et. Al., and riding one initially will only encourage that
notion, but prolonged exposure reinforces it's bicycleness.

My take on the whole thing now with 800 miles on mine is that (for me anyway)
it's not a substitute for a regular bike. It's really a substitute for a car,
and that's it's real value. When I want to ride my bike, I want a real bike &
an exceptional one at that. But, an ebike is an appliance, a tool, a vacuum
cleaner. This is part of the reason I would not sully a nice bike with a motor;
IMO it's more of a degradation than an enhancement and making it really nice is
counterproductive.
Bikes & ebikes both have their place and their paths are already diverging. I
highly recommend everyone have at least 1 ebike; and as many regular bikes as
they can fit in the bike garage, finances & spouses will allow.
A real bike is an object of inspiration & passion; an ebike isn't.

I'm trying to figure the best place to park--at the ride start or at Mohonk
preserve and meet you at the campground.

I usually ride up to 20 miles on flat ground at 10-11 mph (I can go longer
on flat ground.) , so am not a strong rider. I have a hard time on steep
hills. I don't know how to interpret the elevation information. Is this
very steep? Or, is it just unrelenting and, therefore, tiring. Google
says it's a 59 minute ride, which concerns me for a 6 mile stretch. Please
don't overestimate my ability (or age) when responding. (Kai- can drop you

2019-09-19 Thread Mark Roland
I think at this point the Rivendell design tenets have such a strong
gravitational pull that many of the models have more similarities than
differences. I see the Roadini more as a sportier, tigged version of the
AHH, with seat and head tube angles ever so slightly steeper, chainstays
ever so slightly shorter, and less max tire size. It's still very much in
what used to be called the "sports" geometry of late 70s early 890s UJBs.

It's a highly practical, comfortable, speedy road bike. But with the DNA
from so many sources, maybe it came off too much like a mutt to the bicycle
buying public, not a distinct breed that could be easily labeled, like
country bike, or hillibike, or allroad or gravel. "Like a 70s sports tourer
but maybe with wider tires and tigged" is a tough category.

It's still possible that the Gallop will break out of this gravitational
force. I was a little surprised when it was announced that the Gus Boots
would be offered in a version with lighter tubing. So maybe a new strain
has been introduced, or awakened.
