"Doug: Riv lugged MIT frames go for about $1500 so you can extrapolate from
there same as on, say, a Sam or Appaloosa build. $3500? That's probably a fair
guess for the basic Riv Kit if you're buying all new from them."

Funny story: I just read this quote I gave, then looked over at my new custom.
I paid more than $3500 just for a frame!

The charts above and Jan's data has been combined with some other testing

Enter your bike weight and tire size and it will give you a recommendation
that is a good start. add or subtract ~ 10% for a feel you like. I gave

Yeah, it's hard to pin down exact details but that's a pretty solid modern
XC mountain bike. The members here are extremely knowledgeable about
certain types of bicycles, but this thread has been kind of funny to read
as a life-long mountain biker. Obviously, the consensus here would be she
should be riding a Rivendell because that's literally the name of the game
here, but outside this very niche bubble, there is a world where a modern
mountain bike like that has a lot of redeeming qualities that will make it
more attractive to a lot of riders - such as light weight and high
performance, at the expense of longevity and simplicity. After all, cycling
is many things - one of which is sport. In my opinion, that's as valid as
any of the others. And I love them all.

Well, the point of my assertion that there was mud on the tires was simply
evidence that she rode other more extreme environments than the city streets.
In fact if you enbiggen the picture there are numerous tip offs that this is
not a dept. Store bike.
The wheels are REALLY nice, carbon fiber spokes maybe? On closer inspection I'd
say carbon fiber frame as well. I doubt Bogata is the brand, she's advertising
her city and Dollars to Donuts that's a custom paint job. My guess is that for
what that bike cost, she could get a CUSTOM Rivendell.

Yes, I was thinking about this the last couple days; if the 55 is 700 wheels I
might need to size down as well. My 52 Clementine is honestly big, on the upper
end of my comfort range, if it was a high frame, I'd be iffy on it.

My Atlantis is a 53 with 26" wheels, but on the new ones I'd need a 50.

I'll have to think on this some more!

Thanks dougP, I'm familiar with the shifter mount, which look great. But as

Tom, I don't know the size but the saddle was WAY too high for me. I hopped on

Doug: Riv lugged MIT frames go for about $1500 so you can extrapolate from
there same as on, say, a Sam or Appaloosa build. $3500? That's probably a fair
guess for the basic Riv Kit if you're buying all new from them.

Ryan: Nope, I'm back in the production camp for Our Bicycle Belle today (I'll
change my mind again tomorrow). That Cheviot I rode is magic and she'd love it.
Three prototypes already in action tells me a new Fancy Cheviot is on the

Re: [RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-06 Thread Leah Peterson
Ryan,

If I could get RBW to take my money I’d have gladly handed it over! Alas, not
taking pre-order money YET.

You are right - custom would get me the whole darn kit and caboodle, as they
say up North. I’ve contemplated both routes - custom, production, custom,
production, and more than once in this process. And depending upon the future
(WILL this bike be made?) of the Fancy Cheviot and the timeline (do we get it
in a few months or 2 years?) I still may change my mind. I can wait a while,
but if I have to wait as long as the Hillibike folks have been waiting for
their bikes, no, that’s a deal-breaker and I’ll go custom.

But...the Fancy Cheviot is nearly 100% what I would have made as a custom
anyway. I don’t care about the fancy lugs much, so it really doesn’t make sense
to spend the extra money. So, instead of going custom, I could get this Fancy
Cheviot and then put really fancy parts on it and have it painted red, and
still come in at less money than I would for a custom. I’m hoping to make the
Cheviot as elegant as my Clem is goofy.

So far I’m thinking:
Dyno, the expensive kind. 
Another light and fancy wheelset, tubeless if I like it on my Clem
Possibly a 1x, but we’ll see
Light parts (aluminum Boscos instead of steel, etc)

So, $$$. Better stay with production, unless production isn’t
happening/severely delayed.

Also, Riv makes more money if you buy their production bikes than if you order
a custom. Another perk.

[RBW] bike recs for my son

2020-05-06 Thread tuolumne bikes
Seems like a 5' 8" sixth grader would be spending about two years on his next
bike. Looking for a particular bike is a pretty likely way to overpay or make
yourself miserable.

I'd be looking for off-premium sport touring with eyelets for racks.
Off-premium meaning not a canti touring, or for example, a True Temper (late
80s) era Trek vs the earlier 531 Treks. My sweet spot would be seven speed
cassette or better, fat enough tires and a noticeable dent in the top tube that
won't affect the ride at all.

If social distancing allows, I suggest a trip to Trips for Kids/The Recyclery
in San Rafael to look at used bikes. Not the cheapest, but supports charity
work with inner city kids.

I'm curious to see pictures of what the adaptors look like. I have searched
the net in the past and it seems to be wiped of any information regarding
them. Perhaps a bigger conspiracy at hand.

Kidding.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-06 Thread Leah Peterson
Tom, you are absolutely right. Grant says the 60 rides superiorly to the 55 and
encourages you to get the 60 if you can make it work. I happened to ride
Grant’s 60 when I visited in 2019, and got too acquainted with that top tube
when I jumped off that bike. Shudder. Not how a mixte should be! I don’t
remember actual numbers, but I remember looking at the geometry chart and
seeing that the 60’s top tube was MUCH higher than 55. Dealbreaker!

2020-05-06 Thread Tom Wyland
I think if they end up making the 55cm (aka medium frame) a little "bigger"
it will help give people a choice of choosing a frame with a lower
step-through. The recommended sizing for the current Cheviot really pushes
"medium" candidates to the large frame size. The large size's step over is
pretty darn high as I recall.

The reason it looks so modern and fresh is it has the Neutron Posi-flow
Hypodrive Airshaft System installed, so you don't get all that clutter of
cranks, derailleurs, chain, pedals, cables, etc. Leave it to Joe to be on
the Rivendell cutting edge.

2020-05-06 Thread Nick Payne
Don't they come in specific lefts and rights? All the ones I have do - at
least if you want to have the cable entering the stop on the lower side of
the downtube. I suppose you could put a left stop on the right or vice
versa, but that would probably lead to the inner cable rubbing on the
downtube as it wraps around from the top side of the DT to the cable guide
on the underside of the BB.

Now you would think Your Pal Joe - the guy who usually answers arcane small
parts WTB posts with "oh yeah, I have that in a stash somewhere - would have
two of those cable stops that go on dt shifters bosses. But alas I have one
stop and one Problem Solvers cap to set up a 1x drivetrain, which means I sold
a bike with the OTHER cable stop and cap for a 1x drivetrain. Anybody rocking a
