[RBW] Re: Pedals

2020-06-03 Thread Matthew P
Glad to see this thread as this has been on my mind.

+1 for Lynn's desire to keep the foot in contact with the pedal.

I've been a flat pedal, casual rider through and through.
Then about 2 years ago I decided to set up a bike as a fixie (per
recommendation from Sheldon Brown's site).
That prompted the velcro straps, which I also used on a tour or two (not
fixed).
I've also used clips: toe clips/basket with a strap.
At some point I realized I was doing what the clipless pedal system does
but just worse.
In my opinion, if any straps or clips are going to keep your foot
completely stuck to the pedal, then you are probably limiting blood flow to
the foot, and making it very difficult to get the foot out.
So I went clipless on the fixie, and now I'd like to do the same on my
main/touring bike.

I've been using the MKS Sneakers (RMX) pedals. They're nice but I've had a
foot slip off, and bike swerve, while riding loaded in the rain.
I don't want that to happen when the semi brushes by.

I've also been thinking/learning how I need good grip on my shoes because
when the trail is too steep to climb on the bike, I have a hell of a time
pushing the loaded bike up the trail in my sneakers...
said sneakers which have all of their previously insufficient tread
worn off from the pedals.

I found some shoes that look great for hike-a-biking, but why pay $100 just
to have my pedals wear the shoes slick?

So I finally got a pair of Shimano SH-MT22 shoes in my size.
The current plan is to go clipless with those on trips.
(I'll still commute in sneakers).
But to also put microspikes on my shoes that are compatible with clipless
pedals & shoes, when on trails.
Like one of the options here:
https://www.gearx.com/accessories/winter-traction-devices
It seems to be a matter of having one of those with no spikes where the
pedal axle is and a clipless pedal with a bit of a platform to clear
whatever bit of chain is where the axle lies.
Perhaps a bad idea, but a bad idea I'm going to pursue.
And the SH-MT22's were only like $30 off ebay and the microspikes $30-70
and perhaps I have a system that works and lasts.

Does anyone have any Shimano/SPD pedals they recommend for this or in
general (I'll refer back to what has already been recommended in this
thread) or want to sell?

Flats all my life and now overcomplicating things, again,
-Matthew in San Diego

P.S. Kent, I'll read your blogpost soon. Looks substantial.

Hunqapillar is genius, with the wooly mammoth head badge. I also like the
back story about Grant reading it on someone's mailbox.

Atlantis is a close second (I'm biased, I know), evoking adventure &
travel. It works pretty well for those things.

Susie Longbolts is my favorite. Samuel Hillborne is my second favorite. I don’t
like the name Hunqapillar or platypus. I like the name Bombadil and dislike the
Name Legolas but I love the arrow motif of my Legolas. I call my Legolas ‘Sal’
which is short for Legolas backwards.

Roadeo is a dumb name IMO but a favorite bike.

Favorite: Quickbeam. Which I didn't know was a Tolkien thing and when I saw the
prototype at RBW I told Mark I loved the "tree" headbadge and he said "It's an
Ent." Ok I love the Ent!

Not so much: I don't know, I'm not way into the "fictional people" names but I
always end up identifying them with the great frame their attached to and then
I like them anyway. Which will happen with Platypus, which is why I've stopped
whining about it on this forum. The bike will be amazing and I'll love the
headbadge and it'll be fine.

I love Wolbis Slugstone. It reminds me of being a kid and watching the original
Willy Wonka. Thinking about a candy recipe secret agent named Slugworth.

I also really like Frank Jones. Classic American blue collar name.

I’m a big fan of Platypus. It fits great with the current, light-hearted nature
of Rivendell. Plus, they are very cool animals. They feed their offspring milk
not through nipples but by sweating it out their belly. Impressive. “I have
nipples, Greg. Can you milk me?” A platypus wouldn’t find that line amusing at
all.

Sadly, I think Roadeo and Roadini are missed opportunities.

Best,

Aaron

What is your favorite Rivendell model name? Mine is Legolas. It’s real hard to

[RBW] Re: Roadini - 650b on bigger sizes?

2020-06-03 Thread Jason Fuller
Sorry I missed an important detail in my statement, "Roadini-adjacent *TIG*
model with increased clearance and a couple more braze-ons". A lower key,
more economical model that could be competitive against models from Surly,
Soma, Crust, etc. I know the MIT lugged stuff is quite reasonable but it's
still a big jump from $900 to $1500 (particularly for me in Canada, with
the terrible exchange rate). Trust me, I consider a AHH to pair with my
Hillborne though! Similar frames, but I'd set them up quite differently.

Good reminder Erik - I have studied that image and indeed I've been
withholding spending money on a new wheelset for my Clem because there's a
non-zero chance I will jump on the presale of that frameset, given the

So you understand. The first surgery had should’ve been more successful
it’s tried improving so I don’t know what went wrong especially with both
hands. The second surgery I had on my right hand to use something called a
mini tight rope, they insert a nylon thread like material with anchors from
your thumb into your next finger to reposition your thumb, it sounded great
but it’s not done the job and I am 5 1/2 months out now so it’s long enough
I would now maybe even six months. Do whatever you can to keep yourself on
from having surgery if you need some info I have some braces that I’ve use
that are really not overly visible and they were quite well let me know and
I’ll send you the info on them if you’d like. Be well

It shouldn't be necessary to keep repeating this, it's in the original post on
this thread. Jim was getting a lot of private feedback we have not seen. His
decision was based on information we are not privy to.

[RBW] Re: Roadini - 650b on bigger sizes?

2020-06-03 Thread Erik Wright
A few weeks ago, maybe a month, when the Blug came out that talked about
getting a shipment in (or something like that) they mentioned getting the
Charlie H Gallup prototypes. No info other than that they'd been received,
adjustments made, and a production run or something coming late-summer.

During that time, on a Riv-adjacent Instagram account, I definitely saw
this bike (pictured) in the background sorta behind some people (and no, I
don't *think* it was the Platypus prototype):

[image: No. 30 Early November. Required reading, this time. It's light.]

I think on the Gallup thread it was pretty decided that the Gallup would be
this model featured in a Blahg, but wanted to point out that I don't think
the Roadini-adjacent model will be a traditional diamond frame. Not that
you necessarily said it would be, Jason, but that's kinda how I interpreted
Roadini-adjacent. I think we're gonna get Sams to fill that wide-tired,
not-AHH "road" bike and I think we're gonna get this swoop-tube Charlie H.
Gallup as a tig'd budget-ish, fits-50mm-tires model.

That's just my guess!

Re: [RBW] Re: On Topic / Off Topic

On 6/3/20 3:10 PM, William Henderson wrote:
What I observed was a really reasonable, civil topic highlighting BLM

Maybe I missed something inflammatory in it, but the email is now lost
(along with the link
).

The initial email was informative rather than inflammatory.  It also
asked that there be no follow-on discussion on the list, asking that if
anyone wanted to discuss the subject to do so on the Rene Herse blog.

Like others, I want this to remain a civil community. However, I find
the judgement call about what is "on topic" problematic. If this is
about civility, let's focus on that and not muddy the waters with any
other areas for subjectivity.

Here are some different actions that could be taken:
- Write a code of conduct for the group and post it as a sticky post.
Be clear about what constitutes uncivil behavior, what kinds of topics
are explicitly disallowed, and what the consequences are when someone
breaks the rules.
- When it comes to deleting threads, I think it's really important to
preserve the thread so that people can see how the code is being
enforced. This provides accountability in both directions. The obvious
exception would be for threads or messages that are hateful or
abusive. I'd suggest a policy like this:

 1. When someone posts something uncivil, it will be deleted.
 2. When someone posts something about a topic that is explicitly
disallowed, the thread will be locked (but not deleted) along with
a reminder about the code of conduct.
 3. When someone posts something that isn't uncivil seems like it
could be taking the thread in that direction, the thread will be
locked (but not deleted) along with a personal statement from the
moderator about them making the call to shut it down in order to
protect the community sense of safety and civility.

This would work nicely if this was a forum.  But there is a technical
problem.  It is not a forum, it is a google group. While a google group
may look like a forum to those who access it via a web browser, it also
acts like an email discussion group / listserv, and a significant number
of participants get list postings by email.  Google group software can't
delete already delivered emails and doesn't provide a way to lock a
topic so that email replies to already received emails in the discussion
topic aren't delivered.

From a moderator / list owner's perspective, this makes the moderation
job more complicated.

Thanks Jim for all the work you do for the group.

This is a simple one. Jim is the moderator and decides the rules and what is
acceptable to post. If don’t like the rules, then start your own group/forum

Thanks Joe. Yeah, 3 rides now, my back is ok so far. Nice to ride. The
bike is at the shop, after 10 years it needs a good tune up. I either
damaged the derailleur or maybe bent the hanger, I think I prefer the Deore
as it is made in Japan, nor sure about the Acera. I have not used a non
Suntour rear but friction shifting should be good with this. The local
shop has the Acera but I think I would really prefer the Deore. Roberta
can let me know, thanks. I hope you are well.

Thanks Brendan, my parts supply was sold off when I thought I would not be
riding again. Here is a note I put on the iBob page. Let me know if you
find something.

Joel

Looks like these will be hard to find so I will probably get a Shimano
Acera M 360 or Shimano Deore M 591. Any thoughts for casual riding, they
are both long cage and from the Riv page seems like both will work fine.
Mark at Rivendell was a great help and it was nice to talk to him after so
many years. Now that I am riding again I need to get my Bleriot perfect.
Thanks

Thank you for your thoughtful post, Franklyn. I agree that race is an in-bounds
topic here, but name-calling is unacceptable and counter-persuasive. I’ve seen
more people bend away from their reflexive answers in the last few days than
ever before on the internet, and only in response to kindness while explaining
a different perspective.

I’m sorry that stuff happens to you. It sounds much worse than my experience
with people in cars who feel I’m a just target for being on “their” roads. I’m
glad you persist in riding. I also particularly enjoy your photos of Berkeley
views.

[RBW] Re: On Topic / Off Topic

2020-06-03 Thread franklyn
I appreciate the work Jim does to moderate the forum. I haven't owned a
Rivendell in 10 years but all my bikes reflect preferences I gained because
of Rivendell's influence, and I still use many parts and accessories that
Riv sells.

I think drawing a line on the metric of civility, tones, and respect is
very reasonable. I remember members requesting moderators to shut down a
thread on helmet debate. The fact is, we can get pretty worked up on
bike-exclusive issues like low/high trail; long/short chainstays, etc.
Disagreement ain't bad, we just don't want to call each other names!

I appreciate Grant's newest blahg entry, as he makes plain that bicycles
are inextricably linked to human history and activities, and racial and
other social justice are no exceptions. In the worst pandemic we have faced
for 100 years, even public health experts support protest and assembly
because racial injustice to them is a "public health" issue.

Personally, I can speak to how my experience with biking are tied to the
issue of race. I love doing long-distance rides; brevets, mixed-terrain
ramblings, short and long tours, S24Os. Even in places that are considered
"diverse" and "progressive" I have experienced hostility that are thrown my
way because I am not white, anywhere from race-tinted jokes and names, fake
accents, sometimes those comes in combination with things thrown my way;
one time a passenger of a truck swung a plastic soda bottle at me as they
drove by, while saying some racial epithets. Riding our bikes to beautiful
and remote places is liberating, but this type of activities also makes us
vulnerable. On a tour, bike trip, or long rides, in addition to all the
usual bike-related logistics, I always wonder, and sometimes look into,
whether a locale is 1) friendly to cyclists; 2) does it have a reputation
of treating POCs poorly. Obviously, we are still sheltering in place and I
don't have plans to do any bike travel right now, but the
anti-asian/anti-chinese sentiments and attacks that came with pandemic give
me more pause on traveling to some locations.

My point is, we talk a lot about life circumstances when it intercept
cycling/bikes: commute; city infrastructure; traffic; bike-friendly
services/locales; aging and health. For people of color, especially the
African American community, race intercepts/cuts deeper and affects us just
as much, if not more than some or all of these other categories that are OK
to talk about on this list. Many of these other issues are "political"
and/or controversial, too. Whether local transportation and urban planning
policies (funding for bike-specific infrastructure; lowering the speed
limit, etc.) appropriately address the needs of non-car modes are deeply
political and can be divisive, and no one bats an eye if a lister shares
the experience that residents of a particular neighborhood are especially
anti-bikes (as shown by anti-bike signs or laying tacks on the road, etc.).
A year or so ago, someone set up a booby trap on a popular bike path in
Portland (OR) and seriously injured a cyclist. The perpetrator was arrested
and later put on trial. I don't think anyone would object talking about
that on this list, so why is racial injustice any different, after all, it
serious endanger some people, including when they are riding bikes (or
jogging, as in the case of Armaud Arbery).

We never had any problem when Grant and sometimes even other listers
announce a charitable cause, why should we block Jan from announcing his?
After all, even if we are allergic to "racial" stuff, (as I mentioned
earlier) public health experts support the protesters congregating despite
the pandemic because racial injustice is a serious "public health" issue.
How is soliciting contribution for a public health cause any different than
other cause that other listers solicit for?

I am not opposed to banning and removing certain threads, and I think
negativity/uncivility/lack of respect is a good criterion for that, not the
fact that we are talking about something related to race or other social
justice issues.
with respect,
Franklyn

[RBW] small bike frame help & recommendations / (WTB)

2020-06-03 Thread Patch T
Hey Bunch,

I rebuilt a 19"/48cm 1987 Trek 330 Elance for my partner with 650b wheels
and albatrosses. I thought it would fit but it's too big for her. In
retrospect, I actually just *wanted* the frame to fit because I liked it so
much, and thought I could make it work. It doesn't. She could use another
inch of standover room. I don't think going down one size in a similar
road/sport-touring frame would be enough -- not to mention hard to find.

I'm thinking of a mountain bike frame from the 90s for her instead, as
shorter standover heights are more common, and I have a good 26" wheelset
lying around with no use. Worried, however, about weight...

I'd love any recommendations of specific models, tubing, etc to look for as
I hunt; or, if you have something that fits the bill. Just looking for a
frame + fork (headsets, BBs and seatposts welcome but not necessary)
*Here are her requirements:*

   - 26" (or 650b converted)
   - <74cm standover height (with 26x1.5-2.0 or 650x38-42b tires, give or
   take)
   - not a mixte or step-through (her demand, not mine!)
   - not too heavy, we live up a couple flights of stairs with no elevator
   - cannot be a tank!
   - rim brake, no disc
   - under $400 for frame+fork

*Her Trek:*
Size 19", has a 47.5cm ST and a 74cm SO (frame has a sloping top tube, so
it varies) with 650 x 38b tires.
*It's a great frameset with 531 tubing - will be putting it up for sale
once I get a replacement for her.*

Let me know if I'm forgetting anything. Thanks for reading!

[RBW] FS: Showers Pass Refuge Jacket - Medium

2020-06-03 Thread Tim Bantham
Hello All,

I've got a *Showers Pass Refuge* rain jacket that I'd like to pass along.
Its in great condition and just over a year old. No marks, stains or tears
in the fabric. The color is graphite in a size *medium*. This is a
fantastic jacket for those who need protection from the rain and wind. The
size chart list a medium for those with a chest size of 40 to 42". To give
a feel for the size I am 6' 1" and weigh around 160 lbs. I have long arms
and a short torso. The jacket sits at the waist and the arm length is
plenty long. I would describe the fit as athletic but not tight. The jacket
is designed for cycling so when you are on the bike it doesn't interfere
with pedaling and gives your back plenty of coverage. There is a flap that
can be unbuttoned allowing it to hang down protecting you backside. The
Showers Pass brand name speaks for itself. You won't find much better for
your rainy day rides.

$100 shipped to the lower 48.

[RBW] Re: On Topic / Off Topic

2020-06-03 Thread Garth

I appreciate this place because we don't talk politics, religion and
social issues of the day. As stated, there are many other places to do
that, and many places that decidedly do not. Would I expect to hear about
the issues of the day on a website about say cooking, auto repair,
living/hanging out in the wilderness and such ? Decidedly nay. Do the site
admins there welcome such diversions ? Not if they wish to stay on topic.

It's impossible to "talk about the pressing issues of the day because I
care" and not get swept away in playing out the very representative
roles that those issues encompass. What drives the story ? Conflict,
division, taking/making sides . _ vs._ . When does it end ?
Not by playing it out, that's for sure. It "ends" by having no ground from
which to begin in the first place.
