Re: [RBW] Re: Next Level Clementine

2020-06-04 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I just got back from a 10.7 miler. It was great. My dyno is the best thing ever
and It’s such a treat. My tires/wheels are terrific. I love them. I am going to
jump on the Clem H after awhile and see how great the difference is. The
changes I’ve made make my Clem more manageable for me. I don’t know if it’s
just me personally, or my size/stature with the new geo, but I was not as
confident on this bike as I was on my Betty Foy. My Clementine now handles
better and feels lighter. It’s going to give me that “extension of my own body”
feel soon, and I’ve only got 21 miles on the new configuration.

Observations, which may be hogwash:

~My front end feels lighter. My narrower bars make me feel more secure. I feel
like I can make sharper turns and quick adjustments now. I did swerve once or
twice tonight and it was nothing to me. That’s a new feeling with this bike.

~When the mechanic wheeled my bike out the tail light was blinking. “Oh, can
you make it a solid light?” I begged. He was so confused. He said something
about the manufacturer makes a switch, but then realized what I meant = the
stuttering light was because he was generating a small amount of power, causing
the light to flicker. I was elated to know it’s a solid light - I despise
blinking lights. I have not gotten used to the sudden flashing from the lights
as I wheel the bike around, but I like it now because I am reminded I! Have!
Dyno!

~Someone should have told me about dyno sounds. You know when you go fishing
and you’ve got a whopper on the line? That sound of the drag on fishing line -
that’s your drivetrain when you get dyno. My bike was nearly silent before. In
that first moment on my test ride in the parking lot, I thought, “Alright, WHAT
did they do to this bike? Did they make it more rad without my approval???”

~Tubeless is amazing. Or maybe it’s the Gravel Kings. I don’t know but it’s
just sosmooth. Easy. No jarring, even over the MUP expansion joints (is
that the fancy name for lines in the concrete?).

~I”m glad I got a bigger front chain ring. I needed a harder gear, and even
more so with the lightening of this bike.

That’s all I can think of for now. I cannot wait to do this again for my
Platypus bike. Who knows what James and Candice will think up next.

I use the Tubus Duo because it installs so easily. I take mine off when
not using & it's easy to do and the Duo takes up little room. It's easy to
ship the bike with the Duo. This is on a Toyo Atlantis but I don't see any
difference for other Atlantis.

Re: [RBW] Re: Next Level Clementine

2020-06-04 Thread Leah Peterson
Eric, you know what that hub shiner is good for? When I put the bike on my bike
rack, the arm comes down and presses into the frame to hold it. I position the
hub shiner right under the arm bar to be a buffer for the paint. Otherwise,
it’s just a lovely leather cuff - and most days, I wear a leather cuff on my
wrist, too. Matchey!

Eric, I had that problem (too sticky) with the VPs Riv sell/sold. I'm not sure

Re: [RBW] Re: Pedals

2020-06-04 Thread EricP
Funny this subject came up now. Yesterday swapped out the MKS sneaker
pedals on the Hillborne for an old set of VP pedals that have been on and
off a couple of bikes over the years. Not sure which model. They do need to
be mounted with an allen wrench and not a regular pedal wrench. They are
big and wide. The downside to them has been they sometimes stick too well
to both the Keens I like wearing and my shins. MKS sneakers end up giving
me a hot foot on the right after about 20 miles. Hoping the extra surface
area of the VP minimizes this. It's an old problem and one that has gotten
worse after a knee surgery a few years ago.

For the upcoming Clem, already have a set of the Clem pedals. Will try
those first before any others.

On their own, I don't love "Susie W. Longbolts" or "Wolbis Slugstone," but
I think the name SUZIE WOLBIS is the bees knees. I like it best

Also love Bombadil, A. Homer Hilsen, and completely agree that Honus Wagner

Thanks; it was very enjoyable, and had I not started out fasting from last
night at 12:45 pm with just 1 waterbottle and no food, I'd have kept at it
a bit longer.

And you are right; I came across far fewer pedestrians and cyclists than I
would have a month or even a couple of weeks earlier; ABQ has opened up
stores and restaurants and gymns and other businesses, still with
restrictions, but I guess between going back to work, other leisure
options, and the hot weather (90s) the crowds have diminished -- tho' this
is NM, and "crowds" is very relative to our low inhabitants-per-sq-mile
metric.

Re: [RBW] Re: Favorite Rivendell model names?

2020-06-04 Thread Patrick Moore
My favorites are the Tolkein names -- Legolas, Quickbeam. Atlantis is
genius; as good as Legolas.

Longlow and All Rounder are earnest and honest everyday monikers.

I don't mind sheep and birds and pseudo-natural-history beasts -- Heron,
Cheviot, Hunquapillar. Hunquapillar has a nice Tolkein-esque ring; reminds
one of Sam's oliphaunts. "The Oliphaunt, by Rivendell." Mumakil would be
even better; a brutally tough off road bike; Deacon Patrick ought to be
riding a Mumakil if there were justice in this world. Crush those cogs. Or
you could tone it down and have the Heffalump if you don't mind trademark
battles with little Christopher Robin. The Rivendell Eeyore (let's not go
there).

Bleriot is fine too; it fits well enough that in my own teeming little mind
it seems to belong to the frame more than to the aviator.

Clementine is --- nice --- ish; does not make my heart go into tachycardia.
Sam Hillborne is acceptable.

I **do not like** Forest Gump-type names (I do like the character; not the
name): H Homer Hilsen etc etc etc. If I had a Rivendell Forest Gump, I'd
paint over the decal.

I started with bare pedals, added clips without straps, added straps, added
slotted cleats, switched to various sorts of clipless, notably Speedplays
and KEOs for road, the on a perverse whim went back to clips and straps and
very nice, ballet-slipper-like leather Rivats with slotted cleats on my Riv
Road fixed gear gofast. I would pull the strap tight enough to keep my foot
in place while pulling up and back, but not so tight that they were
uncomfortable, and had no problem reaching down to loosen when needed. Of
course, I never did 110% sprints, and toe strap buttons helped a great deal
in grabbing the strap with a fixed drivetrain. But better even than this, I
found a sweet spot for the straps that required no adjustment: Just tight
enough to hold your foot in place while torquing hard, but just loose
enough to pull your foot up and out, and then stick it down and in, with a
bit of a twist to work the toe into the loop and the slot over the pedal
cagae. And, the odd thing, I found it considerably easier to get into and
out of the RX-1s + Christophe clips + nice laminated straps kept
semi-tight, than I did with the damned slippery all-plastic KEO pedals and

slotted cleats for longer rides, and street shoes for errand rides, but
SPDs are just too convenient. 76" gear, so I do have to stand and pull hard.

Leah: The bike and the colors and the story are all very appealing. I like
the use of cable housing clamps for light wiring guides.

Eric (or anyone): is there a technical name or product name for that wire
bundling caterpillar stuff?

Back to Leah: Are your wheels "twenty six inch" or 650B? (I can tell
they're not 700C.) I'm curious because my new Chauncey Matthews pseudo-Riv
will take 26" X 45mm tires with fenders and I've heard much good about
the Gravel Kings; it would be nice to have an alternative to the Nachez

2020-06-04 Thread Steve Cole
My vote is for the Simpleone. Too many pronounce it as two words in
English -- simple one -- when in fact the correct pronunciation follows
Italian rules -- seem play oh neigh. When pronounce correctly this way, it
is sheer genius of a bicycle name.

So this is kind of a different direction, and I'm not sure how the
standover looks, but I was messing around with a Boston-/Terry-design small
front wheel Marinoni and could get a 650bx38 in the rear and a 26" Kojak 35
(actual width 32mm on Cronometro wheel/rim) in the front. Decent clearance
all-around. The small front wheel bikes are usually pretty cheap when they
turn up on craigslist. Generally not as nice as my Marinoni, but probably
still lighter frames than you'll see in your average production small-frame
ATB or hybrid. Though there certainly were higher-end production
small-frame ATB/Hybrids built.

[RBW] Re: Pedals

2020-06-04 Thread Paul Brodek
VP Harriers are my favorite wide pedal. They are flat all the way to the
crankarm, which some big/wide patform pedals are not. Just sold off a pair
of Spank Spike pedals for that reason. Some big/wide platforms put a very
large bearing/bushing next to the crankarm, and do away with a protruding
axle with pedal flats. Which may make them more durable for downhill
thrashing, but it usually puts a bulge in the platform at the crank side,
so your feet can't sit as close to the crankarm. If you like wide Q, fine;
if not, no bueno. Find a side view of the Spank, or check this 'sploded
view:
https://spank-ind.com/apps/help-center#!how-often-should-i-service-my-spank-pedals-what-service-is-necessary

There are other pedals with similar designs out there, so watch out for
that if you like a narrow pedal stance.

The VP Harrier recall is only for 1st-gen pedals which _do not_ have an
axle retention nut. First-gen Harriers used a flat-head cap screw for axle
retention, and that's the design that failed. VP's website doesn't mention
the difference, but Giant's and the CPSC's do. Giant OE'd Harriers,
Giant-branded, so they were also involved with the recall. I bought all my
Harriers at least 5-6yrs ago, and they were already all v2 nut-end. I never
knew there was an earlier version until I started looking into the recall.
So if you got yours recently, should be no worries. And a very quick visual
inspection makes the difference very clear.
https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2020/vp-harrier-and-giant-pinner-bicycle-pedals-recalled-due-to-fall-and-injury-hazards-made

My favorite weight-weenie pinned platform is the Xpedo Spry. Very light at
maybe 260g/pr, supportive, good/sharp shin-shredding pins.
https://xpedo.com/product/pedals/flats/spry/

This is a product category that has significantly widened over the past few
years, and I latched onto the Harrier and Spry when there weren't as many
alternative available. I'm sure there are plenty out there equally good,
maybe a couple/few better somehow, but I like the Harrier/Spry enough that
I'm not tempted to dip my toe back into the waters. Well, maybe now that
the topic's been raised, I'll look at lighter alternatives to the Harrier?

And the Catalyst pedals do look interesting, though even with Harriers I
don't find myself comfortable with arch pedaling. I understand the Catalyst
is more supportive for that, but I haven't been motivated to give them a
try yet.

Doug, I too found that the side I wanted was always facing down (perhaps a
switchable plug-in weight that screws in on the opposite side of the one
you want to use? Oh, make it magnetic...). The last time I used these
pedals was when I fell avoiding a rock (on my Raleigh RX1 cyclocross bike),
and the teeth gashed my ankle. I was outraged. I couldn't believe pedals
like this were even allowed on the market! I was all set to write my
congressperson and leave scathing reviews everywhere, but eventually, I
reset to owning my s#*t, and let it and the pedals go.

2020-06-04 Thread Kiley Demond
Thank you for the link. I love all things magnetic and these pedals are
very interesting; the clipless pedal twist requires muscle-memory that can
be challenging for some. Magnets would allow for a simple lift-off, which
the brain already knows. The bio-mechanics inspired pedals are *very*
interesting as pedaling into my 60s has brought some attention to my knees.
I shall investigate these further ;-).

[RBW] Re: Pedals

2020-06-04 Thread Kiley Demond
My pedal of choice is the Velo Orange Grand Cru Sabot
.
I gave up clipless (Shimano dualies) because I unclipped on the wrong side
one too many times (hemispheric reversal: I *know* which direction, but my
brain sends the instructions to the opposite side). The MKS pedals hurt, I
could feel those spikey things through the soles of most of my shoes, only
my Keen bike sandals shielded my foot. I have metatarsalgia, a fancy name
for a frequent result of flat feet, such that the ball of the foot has very
little padding, so the pressure of pedaling is placed on unpadded bone.
Orthotics make walking fine, but there aren't orthotics for pedaling which
utilizes only a portion of the foot. The Sabot also accommodates a foot
strike that comes down slightly off the geometry-presumed target for
whatever reason, a few of which could be feet that are on the edges of the
bell-shaped foot-size curve, hips that are wider resulting in an outside
edge strike, or unusually long or short femurs resulting in a natural
strike fore or aft of center.

Nice install. If you want to clean up the appearance of the wires leaving
headlight, you might want to try some of this wire bundling stuff:

It’s bendy and split down one side. Just cut to length and slip is on. The
headlight in the photo, like yours, has two sets of wiring coming out of it.
The plastic stuff hides the wires and keeps them protected from inadvertent

[RBW] Re: Favorite Rivendell model names?

2020-06-04 Thread Kiley Demond
I like Homer. Don't know about the Hilsen part, I tend to be on a
first-name basis with my bikes. I'm not sure why, perhaps because I also
like the 'Henry' rifle; or maybe it is just a baseball or Simpsons
connection. Just something old-timey day about those names. I like Sam too
although I have never bothered to look up who it is named for, just a good
'buddy' name. I'd name a step-thru bike Susan B. for Susan B. Anthony and
call her Sue. You know, like the song, "A Bike Named Sue".

I like 'Hunquapillar' a lot because it describes the bike, so perhaps
another would be the 'Gazellapillar' or ... Same for Cheviot although I
couldn't get the 'ut' pronunciation down (despite living in a town spelled
Prescott, but pronounced 'Preskitt').

The most genius name is 'Rivelo' which is the independent Rivendell bike
store in Portland, not a bike. I am not a big Lord of the Rings trilogy fan
(but every guy I have ever been with is/was), or I would undoubtedly be
able to come up with new names.

Cheers.

It looks extra wonderful. Those silver clamps, compared to zip ties, are
so classy. Love the rainbow nipples. Most of all, though, I love that the
front dyno is red with an orange light and on the back, you have an orange
hub with a red light. So nicely pulled together.

I'm especially happy that you had three glorious miles with Dyno and
tubeless GravelKings. You, me, and another other #RivSister M. took a leap
of faith with tubeless and I think it's safe to say we are all quite happy
with the ride. The Edux light you got I think is the same one I got and is
super bright compared to my other Dyno light.

It's nice that the bike shop stood up to the quality of your bike with the
quality of their work.

2020-06-04 Thread Christopher Cote
Atlantis, Bleriot, Romulus, Redwood, Hunqapillar are awesome. I can't get into
the proper person type names. Woblis and Gus are just ridiculous. Quickbeam is
OK, but starting to get a little corny. I love my Rambouillet, but cringe when
saying it to non-bikey people. It sounds so pretentious.

Very, very nice indeed!!!
I hope it gives you many many miles of riding enjoyment.
Its very  cool you finally found a bike shop that can competently work on your
bike. Cheers to them.
Congrats on getting your bike dialed in to your preferences.
Are your boys excited for you?

Bike Insights has a great search function where you can select from many

some of your criteria and linked the results below. I hope this is helpful

Re: [RBW] Re: Next Level Clementine

2020-06-04 Thread Leah Peterson
Mark - do I really deserve the weight weenie label if I have 2 handlebar bags
and front AND rear racks? 

I’m starting to think of this bike as the Clem of Many Colors, but Kaleidoscope
Klem definitely works, too...

Ryan - the reason you feel angst over my bike problems is because I come over
here and publicly howl over them. Sorry about that ! But, do you also feel my
joy when it all gets solved? I hope so! Yes, I have spent a LOT of money on
this bike, but I regret nothing. I love love love a step-through and in RBW
Blue, it’s just, well, I have heart eyes for it. You’ll understand when you get
your Clem built up and on the road.

I can’t tell you how nice it was not to swing a leg over my bike last night;
I’ve gotten used to the giant 52 Clem H I’ve been riding in place of my
Clementine. I had about zero standover, and I felt like I was riding my best
friend’s giant quarter horse, back in girlhood.

Well, this cup of coffee is finished, and the sun is already high in the sky. I
best get out there before the temps get much warmer. I’ll be back later!

[RBW] Re: Favorite Rivendell model names?

2020-06-04 Thread Chris L
There are quite a few RBW bike names I really like and a few I really
dislike.

Maybe due to the fact that I came on board with RBW in 2011 when there was
already a long line of past bikes with established names, I like most of
those names. They just seem right.

I'm not a fan of bikes named after people but I don't hate them, either.

I really dislike Gus Boots Willsen and it's anagram bike names.

I didn't care for Platypus at first but now I think it's a cool bike name,
just not for the bike it's attached to. The Platypus, in my mind, should
be a bike more in the Hunqapillar/Bombadil vein.

My favorite post-2011 bike name is probably "Appaloosa". However, I could
live without the "Joe" part.

That ‘tricked out’ Clem is fantastic. The sum of the parts equals stylish

One would be:

Another would be Roadini. Which always makes me think of Houdini. Which
makes me think magic. But I don't think I would actually want a Roadini.
Though if someone gave me one I would take it.

All the names are interesting and fun. Much more so than CAAD 12 or Madone
or Allez or TCR Advanced SL 2.

Waiting for the sheep to rack up some points.

Maybe Bleriot for me. Or Protovelo. Although having one on order, the name
Clem Smith Jr. will probably become the favorite. It does have my favorite

Strange, never have thought about liking or not liking the name Sam
Hillborne even though that's the bike that's stuck with me the longest.

[RBW] Re: FS: Early Rivendell Road

2020-06-04 Thread Joseph Tousignant
Hi, a 54 cm frame is already pretty small, but adding a shorter stem will
make it feel like a 52 cm at least. If you like the bike otherwise, I'd
keep it for the history and early shorter chain stay specs & fitting
narrower tires from what I can see.

Realize this is super specific: I'm looking to buy an *Grey

doesn't like any other color and I love her!

No other colors please except maybe black or dark blue (did they ever even
make black?). Message me if you've one you want to sell! Used in not-smelly
condition is probably OK.

GP would probably say that they have loads of bikes like that. More mounts =

[RBW] Re: Pedals

2020-06-04 Thread Nick Payne
I like clipless MTB pedals, and now have Speedplay Syzr pedals on all my
bikes, as I dislike float in pedals, and the adjustment screws in the Syzr
cleats allow me to lock out all float on them. It's also extremely easy to
re-grease the pedals - undo a small grubscrew at the outboard end of the
pedal body and use a needle grease gun to pump more grease in until excess
appears past the seal at the inboard end.

Unfortunately the availability of Speedplay products is up in the air at
the moment - since Wahoo bought the company last year, the Speedplay web
page for the pedal says "This product is currently not available. At this
time, future availability has not been determined." However, I've been
using Syzr pedals on my bikes for the past three years or so, since they
first appeared on the market, and the cleats for them look like they're
going to last many years, as they're still more or less completely unworn.
When it looked like the pedals and cleats were going to disappear off the
market, I went out and bought three or four spare pairs of pedals with
cleats, as I figure that should keep me going for the next 20 years or so,
by which time I'll be almost 90...
