Typo, that should be a 50cm, not 59. I will send you a private reply.

Re: [RBW] New Frame

2020-08-10 Thread Jon Dukeman
Wow! Thanks.
8 weeks ago I had lower lumbar decompression surgery because my left foot
dropped. I used to be 6'3" I'm now 6'1". I haven't ridden since last
September. I now have good days and bad. I hope I'm able to ride again. I
rode up and down the street a couple of times Saturday. I'm 69 yrs old.
Having trouble getting my leg over the saddle when dissmounting.
The 58 Sam just touches when I stand over. I could ride the Cheviot all day
long.
I'd like to hear more about your back if you feel like sharing.
I'm glad you will be back in the saddle again.
I don't know what I would do if I was told I couldn't ride again.
Sounds like you are in California.
I used to live down south in Long Beach.
Nice talking with you.

Re: [RBW] New Frame

2020-08-10 Thread Joel Stern
Jon, the last measurement, 3+ times was in the 80.645 area. Years ago when
Grant measured me it was 82 or 83. I know even though I have lost 2” after
2 back surgeries it seems impossible that I could lose anything from the
pelvic bone down. My last custom, which I sold when I thought I would
never ride again was 56cm. The Saluki I bought at 56cm was too big, the
Bleriot seemed fine but maybe I was more tolerant of a close fit. The 50cm
Atlantis with the new geometry I was told would have me taking a bike 4cm
less than my Bleriot, so a 54, which was not made would have been the
equivalent by using the 4” rule. 1cm less height may have made the bike
perfect, 2 cm probably better. I did try a 51 Appaloosa by invitation from
a forum member, it seemed ok, I brushed the TT a bit less than on the
Bleriot. I spoke with Grant and he was certain the 59cm Atlantis would be
a better fit, and I will use a 48mm tire vs. the 42mm I am using on the
Bleriot. If the TT is not giving you any issues on the Sam I bet it is the
correct size. My first Riv was a 53, then a 54, etc. the 54 was probably
the correct size but I wanted a true custom vs. a Road (stupid I know). I
had a 52.5cm AR that was probably perfect and if I had used fat tires I bet
I would have loved it. I was riding 28’s I think. That is the one I regret
parting with the most.
My Bleriot is a pleasure to ride now that I have remembered where to hold
the Albatross bars for best stability, the Atlantis will be a totally
different animal I am told.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pondering one 'nice' bike...

2020-08-10 Thread Philip Williamson
I’m a maximalist. My custom go-many-places road bike has 58mm G-Ones. However,
45mm tires work the same everywhere I ride. I ride with people on 48mm tires on
the same terrain, so it’s not just me. It’s like quartz vs marble countertops -
the quartz is supposedly more durable and stain resistant, but in practice
marble easily meets the threshold of “very” durable and “very” stain resistant.
48mm tires are “very” capable.

I do think we aren’t making the math nearly complicated enough, though. Rolling
comfort depends on volume (cubic liters) and cornering adhesion depends on area
(square millimeters). Further, we put lower PSI into wider tires, so the pumped
up volume of the tire goes up at a shallower angle than the 1 bar volume each
tire width would hold if it was a plastic tube.

Road Runner Bags Jammer in rust in very good used condition. Minor fading and
small stains you'd have to look for but commensurate with use which was slot
but this has worn VERY well. $100

Small Sackville saddlesack in tan that has been ridden hard and put away wet.
There is a thumbsize hole wear the brakes wore through the bag and small
threadbare spot where the bag made contact with the rear tire. I will include
waxed canvas I got from swift industries if you want to patch it. $85

Treetop Designs saddlebag in grey waxed canvas. This bag has also seen heavy

Re: [RBW] New Frame

2020-08-10 Thread Jon Dukeman
Thanks Joel. Can I ask your PBH? Mine is 87PBH
I have a 58 Sam and a 60Cheviot.
Both are really comfortable after I get on. But they seem big when getting
on or off.
Did you feel that way with your old bike?
Sometimes I feel I could use a smaller frame. Maybe I'm getting oldI was
looking at a 55 Atlantis.

is no play or "rocking" back in forth felt with the stem run at full

I really think the design gives you the best of both worlds: clamping
force and removable faceplate of threadless along with the ease of height
 adjustment of a quill.

47mm to 53-584 is about 1.27X by area, a little more than half the

I definitely notice the difference between a 23 and a 28, and
between a 28 and a 32 (using the same tire casing and adjusting
the tire pressure as appropriate).

You'll sure notice the difference if one is pumping up the tires
for consistent drop. I find for road use that the tire pressure
that works best for handling and riding out of the saddle etc
tends to offset the change in very wide tires (I submit that
47-55mm tires on the road are very wide; your definitions may
vary) and that the difference is not as prounounced above some
threshold (for me it is the 38mm to 42-584 change or the 30mm to
35-622 differences).

The difference between 47 mm ( "47c" is fingernails screeching
on a
blackboard) and 2.1" is a whopping 5.3mm.   5.3mm is more than
the
difference between a 23mm tire and a 28mm tire; more than the
difference
between a 28mm tire and a 32mm tire; more than the difference
between a
38mm tire and a 42mm tire.  Those are non-trivial differences,
and are
instantly noticeable when riding.   "Almost all in one's
head?"  I doubt
it...

Hi, All,

I apologize for comparing a 47-584 to a 2.2" tire vs the 2.1" described.
Maths is tricky!

47mm to 53-584 is about 1.27X by area, a little more than half the area
difference between a 23 and a 28-622 tire area.

Will

[RBW] Re: Pondering one 'nice' bike...

2020-08-10 Thread William deRosset
Dear David,

The least expensive thing to do is to double your money: fold it in half
and put it back in your pocket, and you have two lovely bikes there. I'd
suggest you resist the urge to shuffle bikes just 'cause.

If it is a vote, I'd go with the following process:
1. What bike that you currently own appeals most to you? Does it meet your
current (not aprirational) uses for the bike?
2. Keep that one.
3. Sell the other if you must.
4. If you're curious about other bikes, get the object of interest and ride
it enough to wear off the new bike glamour. This may take years if it is a
really cool bike.
5. Iterate.

I do like the Redwood setup a lot.

[RBW] Re: Color survey! Would love some feedback, getting powder for a Surly Travelers Check

2020-08-10 Thread George Schick
Well, not to take your post in a different direction, but the reason I
asked is because I'm slowly growing somewhat skeptical of powder coating
jobs -* in certain cases*. I myself own a Surly 1x1, which is a PC'd steel
frame, that I've had since '04 and I see no problems or issues with it.
Having said that though, I've had a high-end aluminum mail box that was
PC'd and had to be replaced several years ago. Complaints to the manf.
yielded a reply suggesting waxing it once a year. Mailboxes up and down
the street by the same manf. have similarly deteriorated and had to be
replaced or re-painted. I also own a set of aluminum patio furniture that
began to chip and peel several years ago and worsens as time goes along.
Just the other day, I had been resting my somewhat sweaty forearm on one
of the chairs and when I lifted it, a chunk of the paint came loose,
sticking to the arm. The difference between the way PC jobs hold up - *and
it's a big one!* - versus wet paint has to do with the fact that the metal
surface has not been primed with PC. In the case of the mailbox, for
example, I took off the address plates and completely stripped them down to
bare metal, sprayed them with a rattle can of etching primer, then applied
some final coats of rattle can spray enamel. They've held up just fine
while the rest of the box deteriorated. I realize that wet spray jobs are
much more costly, but they generally last a lot longer. Just sayin'

[RBW] Color survey! Would love some feedback, getting powder for a Surly Travelers Check

2020-08-10 Thread Ian A
I really like the turquoise and blue options. I also love the early green on
the Surly LHT which I think is the colour on the Sheldon Brown link
 https://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/surly-lht.html Using an official Surly
colour on a Surly seems fitting.

I really appreciate blues, greens and pastel colours in that spectrum and would
have a hard time deciding. When I had a frame powdercoated, the man asked me
what colour I wanted and I just said "pick the blue you think suits the frame".
He had already shown me a metallic purple which I found hideous, so he had an
idea of my tastes. He chose what I can best describe as a bright pastel blue
and saved me the hand-wringing and second guessing.

If you really like all the colours you posted, just take the frame fork to the
coater and say "this is my short list, choose the one you think is best". Find
out what you got when you pick it up. It's more exciting than Christmas that
way.

1.Wet paint would need to be shipped out adding another ~$120 to the price
2. Wet paint is typically $400 plus for one color (for anyone that does it
often and well)
3. Powder is supposedly more durable/more chip-resistant than wet paint.
4. We have an excellent local powder coat specialist that is accustomed to

$225 including a chemical strip AND sandblast prep.
5. Powder is a bit more environmentally friendly and less risk for the

2020-08-10 Thread Ash
James,

Good to know they will be back someday! Website feature request: it would
be nice if I could type my email id on the product page (similar to Riv
website) so I can get notified when the product is available for ordering...

Thanks!

Does anyone have a Nitto S84 Lugged Seatpost that is collecting dust?

Would like to take it off your hands.

Thank you and all the best

2020-08-10 Thread Drw
That’s great to know and a nice offer. I’m fine with the rust it has and knew
it would likely happen with any clear coat. I was mostly curious If cerakote
has the ability to be clear and rust preventative.

[RBW] Re: 31.8 quill stems now available in 0, 30, 50 and 70mm

2020-08-10 Thread James / Analog Cycles
The cerakote is made to minimize rust in harsh environments: exhaust
systems, parts on boats, sand. It's thin but very hard. It has a better
chance of not rusting than any other clear coat, as it does not require a
primer. That said, if it's scratched, that would be a point of rust
egress.

I am not saying rust can never happen with these, but I will say we have
not seen rust on the cerakote stems yet. The version of the stem that you
have had a clear coat enamel, which, lacking a primer, was going to
eventually rust underneath.

If you would like, send your old stem, and I'll send it with our next batch
to the cerakoter. We can do satin black or clear.

Best, James

Hi Ash,

We will have black Mark's racks as soon as Nitto makes more! The factory
is maxed for the year, so I don't know when exactly that will be. Once we
receive them, they usually spend a month at the cerakoter's.
