Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Roadeo or Roadini 58 to 61 or so

2021-08-10 Thread Adam Kimball
Quick correction - Looking for a 57 Roadini. I didn't realize how much
upslope the top tube has. A 61 Roadeo would still interest me though!

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Nexave Rear Der

2021-08-10 Thread brendonoid
I think if there are any parts you are waiting to get cheaper it's probably
time to give up and start accepting that demand is well and truly
outstripping supply these days. Those Nexave derailleurs were the most
savvy business thing I've ever seen Riv do. They were sold out by the time
I'd woken up and checked my emails. Grabbed an extra Silver Crank though
I've been waiting for those to be available for ages.

2021-08-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Speaking of cycling caps: Bike Gnashbar used to sell wonderful retro-team
caps; they were always on deep discount, or, in other words, list was
always "75% off!!!" I am wearing out the remainders of my BP, Molteni,
Legnano, Peugeot, and Bianchi ones, and I've not seem them offered for a
long while.

Does anyone know where one can buy such retro-caps?

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Nexave Rear Der

2021-08-10 Thread Matthew P
I think the derailer looks interesting and I thought about buying one, but
not for $132 or whatever.
I am fine with them buying up the whole lot.
If they charged what they did for them because they need money, I
understand, but still wish they decided to make money another way, like
sell more hats that are sold out and will sell out again ;)
If they charged what they did following the mentality of "there are only a
few derailers so we must raise the barrier to them" then I wish they
limited access to them based on some other criterion. Their approach is in
favor of people with more money having greater access, which is very much
in line with how the world works.
But it doesn't seem very Riv-ish.
I understand their ethos of "you don't need a $100 derailer; the $30 works
just fine".
But what am I to make of "use the $30 derailer that we're selling for
$130"? Again, seems in conflict with their own approach.

This is not intended to be a harsh criticism; this little thing is just
that: minor.

I wish they kept them all for Riv builds or only sold them in-person or
based on how old your Riv account is or something like that.

Thanks for the tip Laing.

I guess now I should just go ahead and buy the derailer I was looking at on
ebay that sold for $50 and there's maybe one available for $60. Or try to
hold strong to the parts bin approach.

Good call on this post Bill.

I know that regret for not buying up more instances of a good cheap part.

I have a stockpile of short cage XT rapid rise RDs, and will content myself
with those. They don't have the super sweet big pulleys though. On the
big pulley front I have two Altus RDs, which were practically free and
shift incredibly well, but those are not rapid rise. I also have one of
the RDs that Rivendell sold briefly that also has big pulleys like the
Altus, is not rapid rise and is maybe one or two steps up from Altus, so it
has a little bit more alloy construction and a little less stamped steel

[RBW] Re: WTB: Riv Hat

2021-08-10 Thread Matt Beecher
They did a nice run of hats a couple years ago. I picked up a bucket hat,
2nd hand. I really wanted one of the traditional baseball style hats. I
seem to recall a nice looking orange one.

I have a green baseball cap, but quality does not seem quite as nice as the
Blue Lug or the ones I missed out on. I'm hopeful there will be a higher
end hat offering coming up while they are looking for something to help
stay afloat next year.

Good luck with the hunt!

Best regards,

[RBW] Testing for interest, my '98 LongLow 65cm needs a new home

2021-08-10 Thread Berkeleyan
I now have a new Riv-ish second road bike, and the LongLow should go to a
good home. This was built in 1998 by Joe Stark from Grant's specifications
for my height and reach, and painted by Joe Bell. I will try to sell it as
a complete bike before considering pulling the parts off. I think $2,000 is
the right price.

The build is a mix of old and not-so-old. Phil BB and rear hub, Ritchey
cranks, a Sachs six-speed freewheel (less dish on rear wheel) with a 13-30
spread. The brakes are Tektro mini-Vees, which I found just perfect and
grippy after working through different sets of cantilevers. Nitto S-83
seatpost and Nitto stem. Interrupters on the Noodle bars. Lots of spare
bits.

I love the smooth ride of this bicycle, and never hesitate to get on and
ride all day, or for five days on long loops. The forks were repaired after
I broke a cantilever pivot, and Ed Litton brazed a new one on and shot the
forks in glossy black - a little odd-looking for a Riv but not
objectionable. I'm riding Compass tires at the moment, which measure 35mm,
and clear the fenders, but I don't think you'll fit anything wider.
