Oh I remember the confusion about the wheel size! And thats quite a hefty

I was in a similar boat as you before: multiple Rivs that were kind of
similar. I used the wrong solution: I sold one that I really regret.
Ideally the bike with the most standover clearance (/lowest/slopest top
tube) also fits the widest tires and is maybe the heavier of the two
bikes, becomes the trail bike. It gets the widest tires, no fenders. Thats
just my thinking. And the other bigger-but-lighter bike gets the skinnier
 tires - I like min 42 mm, max 2.1" (units ... sorry)
Consider the Maxxis Ikons 2.2" (or 2.35"?) for your wider tire. But people
really like the Thuderburts you already have.
Maybe make the Bombadil and Atlantis as different as possible in how you
 set them up.

 And enjoy!!

[RBW] FS: Brooks Flyer x 2

2023-10-19 Thread schralp
Black carved and tan softened (no cutout). Both have less than 20 miles. I
went back and forth but ultimately settled on B67 for both bikes which just
fit me better. $100 obo for each. If you haven’t used a flyer be aware that
all of the Brooks sprung saddles tend to have some squeaking when riding
and there are things that can mitigate but may be hard to completely
eliminate. Doesn’t bother me but everyone has a different tolerance for it.

[RBW] Re: Who’s getting a Platypus tomorrow?

2023-10-19 Thread Armand Kizirian
After 18 years of near daily riding, and a few attempts at hodge podge 80s
mtn bikes turned commuters that have come and gone, I plan on getting my
first Riv, a Platypus.

It is an entirely unnecessary purchase. I have had a two bicycle quiver for
a majority of my adult life with resounding success. A Salsa Vaya and
various steel hardtail mtb’s, both capable of spirited or loaded riding
with more than enough comfort.

I now have the luxury of all my commuting to be done in a 6 mile radius,
80% of the time. After incorporating silent retreats into my meditation
practice a few years ago, the last bit of riding “fast” has lost its
appeal, and a slower, more intentional pace of life has pervaded the way in
which I move through the world (exceptions made for descending technical
singletrack ;).

This third addition, which I hope to have for another 18 years, will help
bring something incredibly near and dear to me—my daily bike rides—into
that realm.

This is an impressive amount of money to spend on what most would consider
to be a simple, upright, commuter bike, featuring a sun race drivetrain.
Yet, still a bargain compared to traditionally built Riv’s. However, we all
know where the value lies. I will collect my own parts slowly and make it
my own.

A 55cm purple Platypus for me. As a designer, Im not in love with the
color. I find it a bit too saturated and flat, but at least it’s fun and
different. I think this should be the last Ana Purple run. There are far
too many glorious colors to have several Riv runs in one. I will close the
gap with letting go of seemingly unnecessary preferences, something I’ve
been experimenting with throughout my life lately with great success.
Something that seems in line with the Rivendell “way.”

I hope to post an excessively thorough review of the bicycle, with a ride
report, through the lens of my background as an industrial designer,
engineer, and most importantly, human being. :)

Good luck to all!

Set to arrive end of November. Sad you’ll have to wait so long.

 Who is getting one?

 What color?

 What plans for the bike?

I just had a gorgeous 27 miles on my mermaid Platy today. Sublimely
 comfortable. Plenty fast.

Re: [RBW] 2.25 Thunder Burt on a Platypus?

2023-10-19 Thread Lonnie
I have Schwalbe G-one all around tires (29x2.25) on Cliffhangers on my
Platypus and they've been great. Fairly fast rolling, but plenty of
traction for some loose trails. The tires fit the frame fine, though I
have to deflate them about to get them around the V-brakes. The unexpected
issue I ran into involved the chain being too close to the tire. Drive
train is old sugino touring triple and 9-sp cassette. When in the granny
ring and biggest two cassette cogs and when riding rougher trails, the
chain would hit the tire and get sucked in between the tire and the
chainstay. This never happened on smoother roads.

I eventually bought the widest (and offset) Shimano bottom bracket that Riv
sells. That seems to have fixed the problem, even on the rough trails.

No specific experience mounting that combo but I can tell you that
2.25" tires on Cliffhanger rims, for me, measured 60mm. If you've got
calipers, you could check the spacing between tubes and get an idea from
 that.

Thanks Matthew; the paint is really something!

It’s a 60 - take a look at the initial confusion I had before getting
 it - here’s the thread:
 https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/jK5Le9uiJ3E/m/mkygvvKuAAAJ

It’s a 700 wheel size and I think 2.1” would be comfortable and 2.3” or
more would be ambitious, particularly with knobs.

Following the Radavist’s bomba build, I had originally ordered MARS
2.3” from ultradynamico but I got the wrong size (650) before getting the
bike… I returned them but still wonder how that would handle/look like, so
I might reorder at some point - what tires you would you use?

I’m lucky that I have a 58 Hunqapillar with 2.1” thunderburts and no
fenders as my hillibike, so I’m not in a hurry to make the change on the
 Bombadil right now.

The seller said he got it from Riv in 2016, based on the serial, I
think it was made in ‘09 which seems in line with the timeline of when
 they
 were being sold.

I’ll keep you in mind if I decide to swap the bullmoose bars although
it seems silly to have these huge heavy bars shipped from Riv to the east
coast to have them shipped back to CA.

 Cheers!
 Max

Re: [RBW] Re: Are Paul brakes worth the money?

2023-10-19 Thread Michael McArthur
I experienced the 'third design flaw' Max cites here whilst using Touring
canti's and found it very frustrating. It limited my pad choice to very
thin non-cartridge pads and choice of rims wider than 17mm inner width. I
nearly ground off the extra lip that creates the pad/brake arm interference
but instead just sold them. I've been much happier with the modern Shimano
CX50/CX70 design and find it much more practical in every way.

IME the problem with the Tektros wasn't the stopping power but the
sloppy pivots. They stopped about as well as the Pauls but they squealed
and juddered. The Pauls are machined much more precisely and don't squeal
at all or judder as much.

On my bike, the Pauls are no worse than any other cantilever I've used
but their braking power is hardly beyond ordinary; the high end forged
single pivot on my gofast road fixed gear gives more retardation per
 amount
of hand squeeze than the Touring on the front of my errand road bike or
 the
Neo Retro in back. Ditto for any number of single pivots, dual pivots,
centerpulls, not to mention disks and V brakes.

I wish I'd known about the Zests before I bought Pauls. Perhaps they
 would have been more powerful.

Still, the Pauls are beautifully made, so very easy to set up, and
perfectly functional, tho' I think they are more industrial looking that
elegant. Overall, taking all with all, I'm not unhappy.

BUT! I will be very interested to hear others' comparison of the Zests
with Pauls; or of other cantilevers wtih Pauls.

Re: [RBW] Re: Best way to arrange 2-cog manual shifting for "single speed" disc braked bicycle

2023-10-19 Thread JohnS
Hello Patrick,

Did anyone mention the All City Nature Box 853 SSCX disk brake bike? The
rear disk brake mount is slotted to allow for alignment. No idea how easy
that would be to adjust on the fly.

No, good thought, but you'd need 5 mm more of space for: big cog +
spacer + small cog; then lockring. As it is, the big cog and small cog
would have to butt up against each other; no room for chain.

But he says nothing about adjustable chainstays,

Still, he does talk about weird possibilities like 3" tires and
drop bars, so I must investigate.

Really, though, to conclude this question, it seems that I can
either have a very simple bike with disc brakes as long as it's a
 single
speed, or I can accommodate 2 cogs using some niche, complex
 technology. I
think I'll either settle for a fixed drivetrain (no rear brake, no
 problem)
or get off and walk. Rear rim brake not option since I want to use
 disc
 rims.

[RBW] Boomerang Rivs

2023-10-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
I received my second "boomerang Riv" yesterday. My definition of a
"boomerang Riv" is:

-I bought it from Rivendell
-I sold it to somebody for whatever reason
-I bought it back again

My first boomerang Riv was my Hillborne frame set. Boomerang Riv #2 is my
R05C0 8U883 road complete. It's the same BLUE 58cm as is on ebay right
now. I'm very pleased to have a liftatube bike back in the stable. The
build kit of this Rosco will get re-absorbed into inventory and will
partially find its way on to a very weird upcoming build. I'm going to
develop a new build concept for the Rosco, and now have a frame to
handwring over if I decide I need to join the 26.8mm handwringers. Maybe
I'll get my hands on a seat tube reamer and WOW it out to 27.2mm.

A very amusing shipping detail was that my boomerang seller had a shop box
up the bike. they put the bike into a "bike box" and then put the bike box
into an "e-bike box". It was double boxed! It was by far the most bullet
proof box jobs I have seen.

Pics when there are pics worth showing.

Re: [RBW] Bike Makeover Thread

2023-10-19 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
All is well! It’s still a fun thread. I’ll figure out the seat post
eventually. It seems to me to be working fine the way I have everything,
even if it does involve an ugly seat post. I love the grips so far and I
only wish Deb would make some ivory ones to match my other saddle.

Anyway, it’s fun to change up the look now and then. And with a growing
number of RivSisters in the fan base, you can expect more fashion threads
and bike outfit threads. 

Re: [RBW] Considering trading my Ram for a Lightning Bolt

2023-10-19 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
That sounds similar to a prior time they still had discontinued 1"
threadless Grand Rando canti forks in the ivory color still listed on the
site for an extended period. They currently still have the newer disc
Grand Rando 1" threadless forks still listed but also out of stock. So
yeah, seems they are often just slow to update the online shop with full
removal of discontinued items and they got me a few times with sale items
such as a drive side only NOS Ritchey triple crank arm in 177.5mm that was
listed for something like $10 (that I excitedly thought I'd add to cart as
a back-up for my own 177.5 set) and some proto tall stack 26.0 threadless
stems only to find they were gone but lingered on the site for quite a
while.

I've owned both the Ram and Rawland Nordavinden. I sold the Rawland and
still have the Ram. The Rawland was nice but the Ram is soo much nicer

[RBW] Re: Who’s getting a Platypus tomorrow?

2023-10-19 Thread Josh C

I’m hoping to snag a 50cm green complete for my wife. I’ve had several Rivs
and she’s never had the experience. She’s mentioned several times that a
step-through style bike interests her. She has some purple Paul bits on her
current bike that I think will look nice with the green instead of two
different purples.

This would be her townie bike. We ride to dinner, concerts, drinks, casual
20-mile-ish family rides. That sort of thing. Her current rig is an Indy
fab titanium cross frame that, while being stupid light, simply doesn’t
have all of the options for racks and fenders that a Riv does. She’ll love
the fact that she can have fenders and the like.

2023-10-19 Thread Arthur Mayfield
I had a stock notice early last week on a 55 that I snapped up in
seconds—on the way, delivery next Tuesday. It’s in Mermaid paint (which
looks a lot like Bianchi Celeste on my screen), so I guess they found it
among old stock. I’m thrilled to be able to get a frame in my size, either
way. I’ll be able to use up some of my trove of NOS parts to build it up. I
wish good luck to everyone hoping to get one today.
