[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Pictures Thread

2024-02-26 Thread John Bokman
I already own one - a pumpkin orange from 2017. If they offer the new one
in the black they once sold, I'm in for another! I'll set it up as my
"fast" Sam - no racks, light wheels and tires, etc. That is far and away my
favorite of all the Riv colors I've seen, across the fleet.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Campeur Front Rack

2024-02-26 Thread Matthew Rebmann
Nitto's stuff is top notch but it's not *quite* what I'm looking for. That
all being said, if I just can't find what I'm looking for then I'll likely
end up buying the Nitto rack. I'm just stubborn and figure I might get
lucky if I'm persistent lol.

I particularly like the integrated decaleur the VO Campeur rack has, along
with the mirror finish (rather than Nitto's satin nickel) and it'll match
nicely either VO's Campeur rear rack which I intend on buying soon. I'm
honestly pretty surprised they discontinued it.

Looking for the discontinued Velo Orange Campeur Front Rack, *not the
Nitto Campee Front Rack* which has a different finish and lacks the
 integrated decaleur.

I have a bleriot with paul centerpulls and it clears 42s with fenders, or
48s without, but I too would prefer it to have cantis! the pauls are my
only centerpull experience, and though they stopped well I always observed
a lot of squishiness at the lever as well- which I've since reduced a lot
of that squish with beefier/more rigid cable hangers, linear brake housing
with filed flat ends, and even shimming the housing to close up gaps the
cable stops

I can now see the remaining squish is the actually the power of the brakes
compressing brake pads a *lot. *that's pretty cool when ya think of the
modulation aspect, but my other bike with cantis and 48s has just as much
braking power without all tinkering ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ time saved on brake tinkering

I've settled on Nitto R cages and Bivo water bottles. I like this combo; no
rattle yet.

I have both the insulated and uninsulated bivos that I swap depending on
weather. It's nice to not have ice cold water on cold days in Minneapolis.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Pictures Thread

2024-02-26 Thread John Rinker
Great to see all these beautiful and functional Hillbornes. Although I
don't have one myself, I do think the Hillborne blue/grey is my favorite of
the Rivendell colors.

Cheers, John

Re: [RBW] Going really large on Clems

2024-02-26 Thread Mackenzy Albright
I've ridden a 59 clementine and "sized up" 64 clem jr. I would have been
equally happy with both in terms of ride and fit. I don't feel reach (TT)
is an issue with hillibikes given their headtube angle and design around
sweptback bars. I'd be cautious sizing up if you want to run flat bars.
Aesthetically the saddle was a bit low in the seattube on the 64 for some
peoples tastes - but had no issue with leg rub etc. The main reason I kept
the 59 and resold the 64 was: a really tall person (the previous owner with
regret) wanted the 64 back if I decided it wasn't for me as well as I found
the previous Clementine (59) to have a slightly more traditional handling
feel which worked better for it's utiliarian commuter purpose as I often am
lugging around weight on a porteur rack for work. For unloaded trails and
general rides I would have slightly preferred the new gen 64. Both are
incredible riding bikes. I can't imagine my life without a Clem.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone else tried the new Riv seat?

2024-02-26 Thread Mackenzy Albright
Bumping this thread!

I just made an order from Blue Lug and noticed they had them in stock. I
decided to give it a try since saddles are always a thing and my brooks are
all getting quite old and stretched. Now that the seat has been out for a
few months I am curious how ya'll are feeling about it given more saddle
time.

I'm going. Who else? I'm within walking distance to the expo (but will be

needs any local assistance, please reach out via DM.

There is free bike valet parking by Neighborhood Bike works, and donations

I hope to meet or see again lots of us happy Riv riders.

[RBW] Sam Hillborne Pictures Thread

2024-02-26 Thread st nick
It is fun to see the variety of builds on the Sam's.
It looks like the majority have some type of upright / swept back style
handlebarsalthough of course the Sam is so versatile to accommodate a road bar
if preferred .
If recalling correctly I saw orange, silver, light blue , green, black and a
yellow perhaps mustard like color Sam. (Not sure what Riv called it)
Cool stuff.
I'm enjoying the thread.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cantilevers or Direct Mount-Centerpulls

2024-02-26 Thread Kyle Cotchett
Hey Christian thanks for all your thoughts! To answer a couple of your
questions:

*Which CPs are you considering and what is your max tire size? *
I was looking at the Rene Herse cps. I'd be looking to run 44's, but 42's
seem to be more intended for the Bleriot
. The Rene Herse are
for sure pricey, and I will be spending a bit as it is with the frame
builder mods. However, they state they have the clearance for 42s and
fenders. I have a pair of dia-compe canti's

I love on another bicycle, so much so I put a pair on my girlfriend's
bicycle. On that note: @Patrick - I've gotten pretty comfy now at setting
up canti's with drop bars. Specifically the dia-comps. It's all about
getting that straddle wire set up in the right position. I have done it
poorly on other pairs of cantis and been called out by real mechanics haha.

*Will you be using fenders? *
Potentially. I see most of these tours happening in summer and hopefully
some that require a flight in the nearish future. I'd probably snag a pair
of SKS for easy mounting and peace of mind when flying. not so much of a
big deal if my plastic fenders get damaged instead of banging up a nice
pair of honjos!

*Are you planning on mounting anything to the brake studs (racks, lights
etc)?*
If I did canti's I would likely get a Nitto M12 and attach it to the
brakes. I do plan on having low rider pannier attachments put on for a
nitto s rack

.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cantilevers or Direct Mount-Centerpulls

2024-02-26 Thread christian poppell
Hey Kyle!

I have used cantilevers and direct mounted centerpulls (MAFAC RAID with new
Rene Herse hardware). If I could do it over I would have installed
cantilevers. The downsides for centerpulls for me are modulation, fender
fitting, and braze on locations on the fork.

Modulation - The MAFAC RAID brakes feel more squishy to me, even after
adding a brake booster to the rear. Also, despite my best efforts, I have
not been able to eliminate the howling from the rear brake. I threw
everything at them, new bushings, toe in washers, salmon pads, black
compound pads, sanded and filed the pads, sanded the rims, rode and braked
in the rain and in the dirt. Nothing has stopped the howl.

Fender fitting - There would be a lot more room to mount fenders and large
tires with cantilevers. Honjo h80s rub on the inside of the centerpull
arms. If you want to go above 42mm tire with fenders I would go cantilever.

Post location on the fork - Not a deal breaker but the posts are mounted
really close to the fork crown. Its more of an aesthetic thing for me. In
fact, its probably better as it moves the posts into the HAZ of the fork
crown/blade joint

Brian Chapman has some of the best reference images for how large tires,
large fenders, and direct mount centerpulls should
look. https://www.flickr.com/photos/chapmancycles/35900124245/in/photostream/

Which CPs are you considering and what is your max tire size? Will you be
using fenders? are you planning on mounting anything to the brake studs
(racks, lights etc) ?

Good Luck!

good question. I would think the brakes would play a part, but the previous
owner was running paul center pulls and 48s - I don't think the frame could
take any larger. Seems to be part of our good fortune of people making
products around larger tires these days.

Re: [RBW] New bike decision (help!)

2024-02-26 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. Jones said he'd email me that OW of the chainstays at the
end-of-cranks position but never did. But research indicates that current
models won't give me the required 160 mm or lower Q and, in fact, after
much measurement and calculation the arithmetical evidence convinced me
that my quadruple goals -- 700C with true 3" width, 160 mm max Q, stays of
non-absured length, and sufficient air between outside knobs and inside
chainstays -- would be possible only with very carefully massaged plate
yoke between bb and chainstays. In the event, for now, I decided that I
don't need the hassle of another custom, and I chose instead to get a
fatter (compared to current 50 mm Soma SV) sandy path wheelset for the
Matthews #1.

As to the Gus, I'm sure it won't take a 622X76 tire, but I still wonder (a)
how fat a tire will it take and, (b) what the *minimum *Q is.

I appreciate that info, Josh! I'm in a similar situation with my Platypus —

Re: [RBW] Yet another tired question...

2024-02-26 Thread Patrick Moore
The Elk Passes are the most wonderful road tires I've used, but at least on
my rims (13 mm IW) a bit narrow (27-28 mm) for anything except the firmest
and smoothest dirt surfaces. What about the Rene Herse Naches Pass, 559 X
42? They come in an extralight model at ~300 grams IIRC; I've been using
these, with tubes + Orange Seal, for several years and, while they don't
"seem" to roll as effortlessly as the 175 gram Elk Passes they roll very
well indeed and expand the scope of dirt surfaces that the bike can handle
-- I ride mine in shallow sand to take convenient dirt detours between
pavement sections, in order to avoid heavy pavement auto traffic.

2024-02-26 Thread Sarah Carlson
Another vote for the Platypus. It is such a versatile bike, you can really
take it in so many different build directions without compromising your
experience. When I think of all the ways I've seen the Platypus built up,
it's king of mind boggling. People smiling out on trails with lots of bags
and knobby tires, sporty version built up for the road, all purpose
shopping and around town bike... I love all my bikes but with the step
through I imagine this one will outlast the others when it gets tougher to
swing my leg over a top tube. Hopefully that's way in the future... but
it's one reason I'm happy to have a Platy.

[RBW] FS: Clem 45cm & Rosco Platypus 50cm Framesets

2024-02-26 Thread Charlie R
Two Rivendell framesets never built:

Clem L 45cm dark green frameset. This was from the last batch of Clems
with the 26 inch wheelsets purchased maybe two years ago. $1250.

Rosco Platypus 50cm frameset. There were two colors available - purple and
green. This is the green. $1500 - a bit less than I paid after shipping
and taxes.

Both are located in north central Connecticut. Pickup only - No shipping.
Reason for sale is my advancing age and probability of never getting around
to building the bikes up. I do have a recently received Rivendell built
Platypus going to the local bike shop today for it's final adjustments
which undoubtedly will be my last bicycle at age 75. Not a bad way of
ending my riding career.

I have no pictures yet but a simple google will yield some for those who
don't know what they are. Contact me with any questions.
