[RBW] Re: How similar are the Bridgestone Atlantis (1), XO-1, All Rounder, Toyo Atlantis?

2024-03-12 Thread NYCbikeguy
Thanks for all of your wisdom, advice, and suggestions!
Special thanks to Jim for the links to the old readers! The story on the BS
Atlantis was illuminating!

I had no clue about the Handsome XOXOs! I've seen them on ebay and CL
before, but never batted an eye at them.
Now, I'll keep an eye out in my size to stock as a traveler/backup perhaps.

One day, I may have a custom frame with comparable geometries to
XO-1/AR/Toyo Atlantis made with a few tweaks:
threadless fork/headset system
proper kickstand plate
dual canti/disc brake options
more braze ons for racks
ornate lugs! (refer to Wilbury head tube lugs. pics attached)

I'll have to budget properly for that dream to come true one day. I'll just
need Joe Bell to stay healthy, well, and in business to work his magic on
the frame by the time I save up for that custom. hah!

Thanks again, ya'll

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho... stem question

2024-03-12 Thread iamkeith
FWIW, from many years of doing so, I'll second the suggestion (not a
promise or recommendation - disclaimer and all that) that 25.4 stems CAN
work ok with 26.0 bars. But the only ones Ive had scuccess with are
high-end steel stems with a single bolt clamp. They tend to have thinner
steel that can bend and conform to the larger diameter bars. Especially
the Salsa ones, but also the Ritchey Force ones being discussed here. I
don't want to discourage you from trying - and it's a relatively cheap
experiment - but I'm less certain it'll work with a removable faceplate
construction. Less of the material around the clamp circumference is
un-restrained and free to flex. It might work BETTER - I just don’t know.
Tighten slowly and methodically, and watch to make sure that it's the steel
stem that gets deformed, and not the aluminum handlebar. I know it's not
your current plan, but don't pry open a forged aluminum stem to fit a
bigger bar. Lastly, the safe option is still a 31.8 faceplater stem with
a 26.0 shim. I get it if you want to try a 26.0 stem first though. Just
please let us know how it works out.

The original Clem used 26" on the smallest size. I don't ride a frame that
small but I liked that the wheel size changed with every size. Part of me
still wants a Heron or XO or something with a 26" wheel. Its a small part
though.

[RBW] Re: How similar are the Bridgestone Atlantis (1), XO-1, All Rounder, Toyo Atlantis?

2024-03-12 Thread Jim M.
Great looking bike!

Bridgestone Atlantis was pre-Grant, designed by a Bridgestone employee in
Japan who took inspiration from French constructeurs, so a different kind
of bike than the others you mentioned. There's a Riv Reader article about
it that I cannot find at the moment but will post later.

Why no more? No one has raced one since John Stamstad, no demand, steel and
559 wheels are dead? All of the above?

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho... stem question

2024-03-12 Thread Chris Kannen
Again, thanks much for all the replies and info. I think I'll get the 135
Faceplater. The reason for getting the Nitto Riv version instead of one of
these awesome Ritchie's is I need the extra height.

FWIW, Ron says a 25.4 clamp works with the 26.0 bar if you pry it open just
a touch to fit it in. Bit of a hack I suppose, but I'm gonna give it a shot.

I went from Billies to orthos on my Appaloosa, had to go from a 120 to 130
for the extra sweep. Finding a suitable 26.0 stem was a challenge, ended up
with a Miyata pantographed stem from eBay.

[RBW] Re: Revisiting the Nitto 52f Basket Rack

2024-03-12 Thread Bill Lindsay
The best parking brake, in my opinion, is the sturdy velcro leg band off my
pants leg. I have it, and don't need it on my leg, since I'm parking my
bike. When I take off the parking brake it reminds me to put my leg band
back on :).

For steer-stopping, I keep a longer velcro strap connected to each of my
two tandems (one HubbuHubbuH, one beater tandem). When I park the tandem,
I route the velcro strap around the down tube and the front wheel and pull
it tight. Now I can lean the machine against the wall or pole or fence and
it stays a single rigid object, and prevents the front wheel turning. It's
a good system for that task. If "parking flop" is the entirety of the
problem, that's a $10 solution to "parking flop". If "riding flop" or
"steering flop" is part/all of the problem, a strap won't help you.

I bought some Stout 650B tires, and strangely each tire came with this
curiously nice long velcro strap. It was too nice to toss, so I looked for
a good reason to use it. It's ~twice as long as a leg band.

 [image: IMG_5598.jpeg][image: IMG_5582.jpeg]Hi Friends,

I’ve had a Nitto Basket Rack from Rivendell for a few years. I think it
looks awesome, it’s dead useful, but it annoyed me that it was heavy and
made my bars swing around on my mermaid Platy. But as I plan the build for
my 50 cm purple Platy (which is taking a million years) I am considering
putting the basket rack back into service. It pains me to see it sitting,
and it’s so pretty and unique that I just want to give it another try.
Maybe the 650b wheels will be less floppy with this rack? Maybe the
smaller, lighter bike won’t seem as penalized by the heft of this rack? It
would be such an easy experiment if it wasn’t for the dyno light/wiring
that is affected by the decision. It’s not a matter of simply pulling the
rack, because wire length, light mount, etc are affected and will not be
 an
easy switch. My shop hates soldering and I certainly can’t do it.

I had started a thread long ago about this and a lot of people reported
similar experiences. Now that some more years have gone by, I’m curious if
opinions have changed, or if more people have these racks and would offer
their opinions. There isn’t much in the way of reviews to read online.
Maybe some here would offer theirs. If more folks are trying and loving
their Nitto Basket Racks, I’ll be likely to install mine.

Meanwhile, this beautiful Platypus sits in my living room on the shelf,
waiting for its parts to return from the anodizer. And, there’s fresh snow
on the ground. But talking bikes will get me through!

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho... stem question

2024-03-12 Thread Michael Monti
As a huge fan of the old Ritchey force stems, I'm going to say that it is
very likely that the stems pictured here are designed to accommodate
cantilever brakes, aka with cable stops. The clamp diameter being 25.4.
Also, I have found these stems hold handlebars very well. The issue with
these stems is not scratching the bars during install because the steel
sleeve (the 25.4 part) is a longer length than most single bolt stems
making it difficult to install anything other than a flat bar. So, my
trick for this is to take out the bolt and put it in backwards, starting it
through the threaded side on the bottom of the sleeve and placing a penny
in front of the unthreaded side covering it and threading the bolt into the
penny and with minimal torque the clamp diameter opens up helping to
prevent any damage to your handlebars during install. The downside to this
single bolt stem vs. the faceplater stem is deciding you want to change
your stem and having to undo one side your beautifully wrapped bars.

I'm putting these bars on a 1985 Trek 870. As Riv says on their

My current set-up is Choco bars and an 8cm Dirt Drop. The height feels
fine, just slightly above saddle height, and the reach isn't bad either
 but
could be ~1" longer. I'm fairly upright but can lean in and grip forward

Are these details helpful? I'm maybe leaning toward the 135mm

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho... stem question

2024-03-12 Thread El Sapo
Is a 1 bolt clamp is going to be adequate on the ortho? The options for
mounting this bar are almost all troublesome. Oversized clamp with a shim?
Faceplater that’s too short? Undersized clamp? Or the one bolt quill made
for a road bike?

If you’re putting these bars on an 80’s MTN bike with a road bike style
geometry frame. is it better to go longer like 130mm?

I’m that guy Grant tells to not overthink it. Matter of fact he did tell me
that once already.

Thank you all for the pics and advice! Very helpful.

I'm putting these bars on a 1985 Trek 870. As Riv says on their
cardboard geo charts "don't obsess", but geometrically this old frame is
not terribly far off some Riv models, setting aside, of course, bb drop
 and
 stack (1985 Trek 870: 21.8" frame, 71º hta, 71.5º sta, 58.0 tt, 48.5 cs,
 5.0 drop, 52.7 stack, 40.6 reach).

My current set-up is Choco bars and an 8cm Dirt Drop. The height feels
fine, just slightly above saddle height, and the reach isn't bad either
 but
could be ~1" longer. I'm fairly upright but can lean in and grip forward
 as
needed. I just like the idea of more width and more flare.

Are these details helpful? I'm maybe leaning toward the 135mm
Faceplater based on your replies, but that does seem long!

[RBW] Re: Kool Stop Cross Threaded Dual Compund Brake Pads - PSA

2024-03-12 Thread Garth
Yes, those don't have the required threaded post length with spacers. In
fairness to the pads, the photo shows how short the threaded posts are.
Stuff happens and you ride on.

You'd do better with these that appear to have the required length and
spacers :

Or when packing panniers? Or when loading the bike onto a bike rack? I advocate that you get the Velo Orange steering damper. However, to install it you are going to need to reroute your cables on the downtube. Here's what you need for that, which allows you to run full length outer housing. I have these for my rear brake on my Rivendell and they work great. As a bonus, you can get cool cable outers in a contrasting color (try Sim Works or Velo Orange for these): https://www.amazon.com/ZYAMY-Bicycle-Hydraulic-Housing-Clamps/dp/B095P4GPQZThe steerstopper is a cool farkle (fancy accessory really kewl likely expensive), but it's a $100 solution to a $10 problem. Try one of these on your front brake lever first as a parking brake:https://www.amazon.com/Nite-Ize-Original-Reusable-Assorted/dp/B00SHBNE8E/ref=asc_df_B00SHBNE8E/?tag=hyprod-20=df0=19807628==g=15513276014631186794c===9067609=pla-318105899700=1=CjwKCAjw17qvBhBrEiwA1rU9w2QBemfat-bZ6llmXU4aAVZxoNtAa1OXdctlHdbXqGK7DcyUwTEkvxoC9MkQAvD_BwEMichaelOn Monday, March 11, 2024 at 11:22:42 AM UTC-4 krhe...@gmail.com wrote:@Tom,Thank-you for your information. I think it looks awesome, it’s dead useful, but it annoyed me that it was heavy and made my bars swing around on my mermaid Platy. But as I plan the build for my 50 cm purple Platy (which is taking a million years) I am considering putting the basket rack back into service. It pains me to see it sitting, and it’s so pretty and unique that I just want to give it another try. Maybe the 650b wheels will be less floppy with this rack? Maybe the smaller, lighter bike won’t seem as penalized by the heft of this rack? It would be such an easy experiment if it wasn’t for the dyno light/wiring that is affected by the decision. It’s not a matter of simply pulling the rack, because wire length, light mount, etc are affected and will not be an easy switch. My shop hates soldering and I certainly can’t do it. I had started a thread long ago about this and a lot of people reported similar experiences. Now that some more years have gone by, I’m curious if opinions have changed, or if more people have these racks and would offer their opinions. There isn’t much in the way of reviews to read online. Maybe some here would offer theirs. If more folks are trying and loving their Nitto Basket Racks, I’ll be likely to install mine. Meanwhile, this beautiful Platypus sits in my living room on the shelf, waiting for its parts to return from the anodizer. And, there’s fresh snow on the ground. But talking bikes will get me through!Leah
