[RBW] Riv horse-trading on a Riv-centric site

2014-01-29 Thread PeterG
Having spent thousands at Rivendell and hundreds on used equipment here, I see
no harm in buying/selling used pieces on this site. When funds are slim and I
need something, I come here because the people on this site are knowledgeable
and you usually get exactly what Is promised (not so much on eBay or
Craigslist). This site works great and is enjoyed by thousands. Why fix what
ain't broke? I believe most people on here spend what they can at Rivendell.
Everyone likes the new car smell, but we can't always afford the shiny new
stuff. Many times its impossible to find Riv. Stuff used anywhere but on this
site.I get the whole buy Rivendell to keep them going thing...and I do that
whenever I can, but I still don't see any abuse of wtb on this site...just my 2
cents...PeterG

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Misc. parts for a San Marcos build

2014-01-09 Thread PeterG
My San Marcos is a 59cm. Frame looks awesome. I wasn't looking for a new
bike, but the wife got this used in brand new shape. I have a few other
bikes including a Homer, Betty and an old 60's steel. Originally, I was
just gonna sell this San Marcos. Decided may be to build it up if I can
find parts cheap enough. Thanks again for all the info.

On Thursday, January 9, 2014 11:56:37 AM UTC-8, Tim Gavin wrote:

Congratulations on your beautiful bike! I just bought a Soma San Marcos
51cm for my girlfriend as a christmas gift, so I have hands-on experience
 on this frame.

 *Brake reach*:

What size is your San Marcos frame? The brake reach is specific to the
size, and Tiagra sidepulls may, or may not fit.

47, 51cm use 650B wheels and long reach brakes (55-73mm)
Larger sizes use 700C wheels and standard reach brakes (47-57mm)

EXCEPT: the newest production frames, 2013 on, use long reach brakes on
all sizes. I don't know how to tell besides measuring.
(I did speak to someone at Soma, though, and they said the newest run of
frames also has Riv-style mid-blade fork eyelets for a mini rack. I don't
know if this corresponds to the brake reach change).

 *Dropout spacing*:

I've successfully spread the dropouts on two older steel frames, by hand,
using the Sheldon Brown 2x4 method. Crude, but it works. (I should
probably take both frames down to the bike co-op to double check alignment,
but they both measure up straight and shift properly).

HOWEVER: The San Marcos has beautiful lugged rear dropouts (seriously, I
haven't seen the like), not skinny old-style ones. This may make it harder
to re-align the dropout if you managed to bend it out of whack when cold
 setting.

THAT SAID: You can probably just cram a 135mm wheel in there. Try it!
You can spread the dropouts slightly by hand in order to facilitate. You
won't bend them far enough to deform/cold-set them; you'd have to spread
them much wider to do that, as Ron Mc stated above.

The Appaloosa is a very cool bike. I had the chance to ride it briefly and

ride weightybut at over 5 grand! That's custom built bike territory. In
that price range you can have a bike any way you likePeterG

tax is $5,446.00. When you add tax it brings the bike to $5,891.08. The
after tax total is then discounted to $5,555.00 or almost $100 more than
the non-discounted price. Since I live out of state after I pay shipping
the bike would actually cost me more than if I had paid full price.
Obviously an honest mistake but if you lucky enough to be the right size

Lowered price on AHH. Frame has less than 100 miles on it. Bought this bike
as a go fast build to complement my other AHH but went another way.
Excellent condition. Fenders are off another Hilsen and Brooks has some
scrapes on it, but everything else is either new or almost new with little
wear. New price is $2699.9 speed Dura Ace triple bar end shifters and
everything else is a normal Rivendell build. I do have some Schwalbe 47c
tires if you'd rather have them installedThanks ...as usual, contact me

have another Hilsen and was planning on using this one for a road bike with
light weight parts. I have since gone another way and have this bike for

about 500 miles on it, handlebars are from another bike and fenders are
from my other hilsen). ALL parts are either new or hardly used. The saddle
does have some wear but no ass marks and still in great shape. wheels are
DT Swiss synergy Velocity and nearly new. 9 speed triple dura ace bar end
shifters. New bar tape. Peddles water bottle cages are NOT included.Open
to REASONABLE offers. I was asking $2999.maybe it was too much? If
someone prefers Albatross bar set-up, I have that too and can swap out the

plan was to make one of them my road bike only and the other I was going to
do up with racks and big tiresNeedless to say i decided i dont need the
other Hilsen ( i have other Rivs.)...The bike is a size 59c and typical
Riv. build: Some of the parts I added to the bike after purchase so they
have more than 100 miles on them, but are in great shape...such as the
honey brooks saddle, albatross bars...it has Shimano Deore LX hubs, 9 speed

[RBW] Strange happenings out there

2013-05-18 Thread PeterG
My wife had to go out of town for the week. Bored, I decided that I would
spend the day riding my Hillborne and then visit a few local bike shops and
see what's selling out there these days. I haven't really been to many bike
shops in the last couple of years (Rivendell has been my go-to place for
most all my cycling needs lately). I ended up visiting three shops here in
Reno, NV. I felt like I was in a weird sort of parallel universe. All of
the stores had their racks filled with carbon race bikes with the
handlebars wa below the seats. When I asked to see bikes where i could
get my handlebars at or above the seat I was told at each store that they
don't make them that way... unless I was interested in a beach cruiser type
bike (single speed). It was explained to me that people want to go fast on
road bikes, so they need to be hunched down to prevent wind drag. When I
asked about seeing steel frame bikes, all of the salesmen told me that
steel bikes haven't been made in years.. .WOW! At the last stop I made,
a young kid that worked there (maybe 19 years old) whispered to me that
there was a local shop that did indeed sell two steel bikes, gunnars and
surly'sbut he couldn't remember the name of the store. Not sure if that
is true or not, but I give the kid credit for at least trying (his boss
tried to sell me a cervelo race bike two sizes too small for $7900 for
weekend solo riding). Is Reno an anomaly or is this happening everywhere?

[RBW] Re: Soma San Marcos review @ Bicycle Times

2013-05-10 Thread PeterG
Doug, I know exactly what you mean. I too am looking for a road quick bike
that i can put albatross bars on and be COMFORTABLE. Age creeps up on us
and riding can become a burden if there is a long recovery. That doesn't
make us want to not go faster...it just makes us hurt more if we do. I
owned a Gunnar Sport that may have been perfect for that kind of riding. I
never put anything other than drops on it but thinking back I probably
should have... just to know. Good luck in your search

On Thursday, May 9, 2013 2:33:15 PM UTC-7, Doug Williams wrote:

I'm leaning strongly toward a San Marcos, but I can't seem to let go of
the idea of having a faster Roadeo. I like to do long solo rides. I ride
with others on occasion, but I don’t worry about racing or drafting
anybody. I want to be fast (doesn't everybody?) but I also want to be
comfortable. Not just because I like comfort (I do) but I also think that
being comfortable allows me to put in more effort, which makes me faster.
Plus, at 55 years old, I don’t recover as quickly as I used to. I want to
be able to ride daily. I don’t want to spend days “recovering” from the
 last ride.

So which bike do you guys think would be better for long, comfortable,
randonneuring type (but not racing) riding? The San Marcos with the 6
degree slope TT and very upright position? Or the Roadeo with the lighter
tubing (a little over half a pound, I think) and more “race bike” geometry?
I would put a threaded stem on the Roadeo and build it up pretty much the
same as a San Marcos. So I expect that I should be able to get the bars
high enough on either bike. But there are still differences in the bikes,
and I wonder how much “real world” difference there would be on a long ride.

But then I keep going back and forth. The San Marcos can take a back rack
that could come in handy on longer rides. But then, I could clamp a rack on
the Roadeo if I really had to. The Roadeo is a drop-dead gorgeous “true
Rivendell” bike with a great paint job on higher quality steel. But then,
the San Marcos is $1,300 less.

 Analysis paralysis, I know.

Love the ClassyHobo thing...I picture a charlie chaplain type leaning

On Thursday, May 9, 2013 7:59:00 AM UTC-7, grant wrote:

One thing to keep in mind that's easy to not keep in mind is that a group
like this has already been filtered through progressively finer sieves
until here we all are, comparing two species of planaria, while maybe
losing the big picture, which includes tigers, volcanos, vaudeville, and
 black holes.
Jan's planaria is rando; RIV's is kind of classy hobo, but they're both
practibo and in such similar ways, beautifo. Rando came in the '40s and no
doubt had its own influences, but RHerse was at the center of it, and there
were a few others (read Jan's book, omg, if I may!).

CHobo bikes like ours wouldn't exist without those. I'd be hooking up with
assorted Chinese bike factories looking for the best deals on forks and
trying to keep abreast of the lastest nanotechnological progress in carbon,
 or something.

So, when it comes to a little more or less trail, a little more or less
integration of racks, and big saddlebags versus big handlebar bags---in the
picture that's only slightly bigger than the one outside the powerful
microscope, it's all the same. Jan's contribution is like salt's
contribution, at least that's one way I think about it. He is thumbs-upping
Herse and the old French guys, pointing to them, but in doing that he's
actually making a huge contribution to modern bikes and styles and tastes,
 educating along the way.

Of course, there's nothing TO take away from the old Frenchies (as I call
them, but I'm sure Jan has never), but because of the size of the
bike-riding population today, Jan is himself more influential, and I'm one
he's influencing. Periodically, while he's up there doing his thing and I'm
down here doing mine/RIV's, we get tossed into the ring as antagonists,
which makes us both feel weird, sinceit ain't like that at all. I've
known Jan for close to 20 years. What we have in common brought us together
 and keeps us that way.

His book is a masterpiece. I've read the whole thing and have dipped into
it many times since. It's soothing to the eyes and feels like a cozy
blanket on a chilly evening (the chilliness coming from non-planarial
 bikes!)

Bosco's and Albas have kept me riding also...My Bosco's are only a few
weeks old, so I'm still like a kid at Christmas in anticipation of every

Hi Friends, I started this post on the recent thread about switching to
uprights, but I thought I'd start a related new thread that focuses on neck
pain. As you might recall from an old post/thread, my neck pain is
formally being treated and I have some moderate deterioration in the 6-7
cervical vertebrae. Good-bye mustaches and hello Bosco's.

So specifically, I just switched to Bosco's on my little 51cm Protobleriot
single from m'bars and think all my bikes are headed in that direction. I
am loving them. I've had a couple of 20 mile days plus short errands. I
have the 58's and the big surprise here is that they are not too wide for
me at 5'2. What's even better is that they are making a difference for my
neck. The combo of having a more upright position and wider bars is that
they provide a healthy posture for both my neck (having the weight of the
head on top of the shoulders) and shoulders (being more stretched back and
out instead of rolled forward and in). Plus the Bosco's give you so many
hand positions. My only complaint is brake-cable-mitten space. Haven't
gotten it dialed in yet. No problem without mittens. Dialing in also
 includes saddle adjustment.

Anyway, I can feel it making a difference in the short time I've had it
 set up.

[RBW] New (to me) Betty for the wife

we waited for the Betty...This is my third Rivendell for the family and we
couldn't be happier! I now have what I consider the perfect pair...a Homer
and a Sam. The Homer is set up as my go fast bike with drops, no racks or
extras. The Sam is set up as my wanderer. It has racks, bags, bells, 47cm
tires, Bosco's and sometimes even a doggie basket up front. My wife is
lovin her 58 Betty and we can't wait for biking picnics and riding along
the river in Reno. Thanks again to Joe, Sean, Harry, Will and especially

[RBW] Re: “Paleofantasy”: Stone Age delusions - Is Grant Eating the Wrong Stuff?

2013-03-13 Thread PeterG
I don't know a lot about all the different views of this subject, but
I do know my own results..I have MS and neuropathy in hands, feet. I
came across a book called wheatbelly back in December of 2012...The
author (a cardio doc) mentioned that thousands of his patients have
improved their lives cutting out wheat, grains and sugars. He
mentioned how lots of evidence is starting to look like many of the
auto immune diseases are somehow related to gluten and the new age
wheat we have formulated.(these aren't the wheats of our
grandfathers). Just to see what would happen, i started Dec 10 with
cutting out ALL grains, sugars and processed foods. results after 3
months: My left hand is actually working most of the time now...my
brain fog is gone...Migraines are history...pain is half of what it
was...cholesterol numbers have been cut by 67%...I am no longer on
high blood pressure medsand the list goes on and on and
onPersonally, I think the wheat that we created 30 years ago is
killing us slowly, but each of us has to decide what works and what
doesn't...I want to thank Grant for getting me started on this. I was
talking with him last year and it was he who first talked to me about
diet and how important it was for sustaining a healthy life (he even
had me watch a youtube video)...I encourage everyone to try for
yourself and see what happens...what have you got to lose? Sorry for
preaching...

On Mar 12, 10:30 pm, grant grant...@gmail.com wrote:
Whatever works for (anybody) is the right thing. A good way to test is to
have a complete blood and lipid test (testing for Type A and B LDL, or else
it does't tell you anything), and include A1C in there, too. Do that now
(for instance) to see how your diet is working, and then go super low carb
(or minimally, quit grains and beer for three months) and test again.
Anybody can stand on a scale and look in a mirror and get a *feel* for how
things are going, but the blood tests tell things the scale and mirror
 don't.
For those unfamiliar, this is about a super low-carb diet that eliminates
all grains and most other high-carb foods. It is based on the notion that
the species Homo has been around for 2.5 million years, but has had access
to vast amounts of carbohydrates only for the last 12,000 years at best
(middle east, asia), and some cultures---notably Native Americans and
Africans and Af-Americans, and notably not middle-easterners and asians—
have had less than two hundred years to adapt to high-carb diets. People
with long histories of carbs have in their saliva more amylase, an enzyme
that pre-digests starch before you swallow it. But the famous skinny Asians
that people tend to use to discredit low-carb diets--are eastern asians who
eat like birds and work like bees---a fistful of white rice, some veges and
fish---and that when they eat typical western diets, they plump up like the
 rest of us.
And---this is longer than I'd planned to speak here—the science behind the
benefits of low-carb comes down to one word: Insulin. Insulin is a
metabolic hormone that determines whether you store fat or burn it. I am
not a scientist, but even the most conservative scientists acknowledge that
in the absence of insulin we burn body fat and fuel our cells with ketones
(a byproduct of fat breakdown); and in the presence of insulin we create
fat and store fat and burn glucose for energy. So if you carb up for a long
ride, you will burn the calories that you ate, but not your body fat.
 (Insulin spikes with carbohydrate intake.)
Is there an endocrinologist in the house who cares to weigh in here?

There is mounting evidence (spoiler alert: I will soon ask if there's an
oncologist or a cellular biologist in the house) that cancer cells thrie in
the presense of glucose (comes from carbs) but they cannot live on ketones
(fuel used when carbs are restricted). So cancer cells have been known to
shrink on ketogenic diets. Oncologist? Cellular biologist?

Of course if your body fat is where you want it and your blood scores
reveal a picture of inner health, then it would be nutty to change. BUT if
you're not where you wanna be and your blood scores suck, then low-carb is
worth...not dismissing just because it is counterintuitive.
