Leah,Did I miss the part where you got a professional fitting somewhere local to you and then ordered a Custom Riv Road just for you? Heck, you could build a step thru custom Riv Road if you wanted! I bet that will be a beautiful bike. Yours, Riv Sister Liz On Apr 21, 2024, at 14:29, Chris Halasz wrote:I see many here of the relatively long torso to short inseam chromosomal group recommending square frames (top tube similar to seat tube) geometries. I wonder if that will work for Leah. This never worked for my 5' 5" wife. The only non-custom dropped bar bike she ever fit decently on was the smallest of the Bleriots (49cm?) with 650b wheels to limit toe clip overlap (TCO), and that only worked with a maximally extended 50mm Technomic stem. We at one point purchased a Gunnar 50cm frame with nice short top tube. Upon receiving the frame, I realized it had something like a 75 degree seat tube, which would not work with my wife's long femurs, no matter the then available setback seat posts. So I recommend the *smallest* (i.e. shortest) sloping top tubed frame that will elevate the bars as much as possible, and discount threadless ahead-type forks and stems, allowing for plenty of elevation of the bars, and recommend no larger that 650b wheels and not-too-chunky (38mm max) tires to limit TCO. (I also don't recommend a cyclocross frame unless you really like standing over exposed top tube cables that are wiped clean by your shorts.)Unless, Leah, you have a long torso compared to your inseam, then you may ignore! And we all are anxious to see what you end up with. Personally? I'd love to hear how you drop the whole pack on a custom-painted Roaduno. Cheers ChrisSB, CAOn Sunday, April 21, 2024 at 2:20:57 PM UTC-7 Patrick Moore wrote:As someone else said, skip the scruples and just try drop bars. There is a perfection of fit and feel and a real pleasure in riding a well set up traditional road bike -- I don't mean racing bike -- that you don't find with other combinations of frame, saddle, bar, and their relative positions. Really, this sort of setup on the right sort of frame is more comfortable, more natural, more pleasant for energetic riding than other setups; at least, I've always found it so, and there's a reason why the traditional road bike was developed so quickly after the chain-driven safety was invented and why it has remained largely the same for going on for 150 years.Note: I don't say that everyone who rides energetically should have a road bike, but everyone who does so and can try ought at least to give one a try. But for the final and perfect version, I'd not close my mind a priori to other makes. I am guessing, but I would not be surprised if, after your usual rapid learning cycle, this time with a road bike, you end up with a custom. I’m sure this has been revived and discussed many times in the past thirty odd
years, but I’m reading the Mudsluts (Sheldon Brown/bikesite?) interview with
Grant Petersen and well if you haven’t read it you should. It’s mostly Grant
trying not to make the whole interview about the internet and its future as a
tool for bicycle businesses and customers.
I got here unironically via Google search so I can’t tell you when it’s from
but early in the Rivendell days, maybe 1994 or 1995.
Someone more saavy can tell. Hopefully this link will work:

[RBW] Want to buy Paul Levers (and a few other things)

2024-02-23 Thread luckyturnip
Hi all,
I am working on building my S/O a fancified late 70’s step thru Raleigh Sprite.
It will be the first time I build my own wheels.
Anyhow unrelated to the wheels I am looking to buy a used pair of Silver Paul
Love Levers.
If anyone is selling those please message me off list with price shipped to
Sacramento.
If you’re wondering what else I am looking for the big thing is a Sturmey
Archer S-RF3 hub and thumbshifter (120 old/32h). I waited too long to buy this
and Handsome Cycles store appears to be closed.
Due to the weird scams I have seen happening on this list please know that I
will look for verification of your existence in our correspondence, and I will
expect to pay you with Goods/Services for both our protection unless we meet in
person.

Thanks,
Liz in Sacramento (unwilling to remove the Love Levers from my Atlantis)

This has been a great bike that I've really enjoyed riding, but I don't do it enough and I'm excited to pass it on to someone who will enjoy it.  Not to toot my own horn, but I was riding hillibikes before they were cool, or at least before Grant had thought up the term. When I bought this in 2016, I was mountain biking a lot and built this up from the start as a rim brake mountain bike, using things like wide, tubeless compatible rims, strong V-brakes, and trigger shifters. When VO brought out their 31.8mm quill stem in 2017 it got 710mm Jones Loop bars, which really tied the whole thing together, and that has been the basic setup with relatively minor modifications since then. Overall it's in good shape, never been crashed (that I can remember), and I've proactively replaced consumable parts before they've worn out. Even used this was too much for her to comfortably pay. Later in the summer we ended up ordering a CLEM complete from Riv. The end result was exactly what I was hoping. Once she experienced the long wheelbase of the Clem combined with the wider tires the difference between her old bike and the new Riv clicked for her. Re: [RBW] A College Clem

2023-08-05 Thread luckyturnip
Don’t do it. I used to work on a college campus and the reality is, bikes are stolen like crazy, campuses are targeted by bike thieves, college kids are busy and forgetful and all it takes is one careless lockup and it’s (or parts of it’s)  gone. I don’t believe there’s any way to keep a nice bike like a Clem safe or intact on a college campus.Get a big steel 90’s MTB and put a Sunlite fake Albatross on it. Just my .02Congratulations to you for guiding your son towards the next phase of his life! On Aug 5, 2023, at 19:56, Bicycle Belle Ding Ding! wrote:It nearly kills me to say it, but my older son will be heading to college in a year. Freshman aren’t to bring cars to campus, so that leaves buses, bikes, and your own two feet for transportation. My boys have grown up riding Clem Hs; this son rides a 52 cm cast-off from my husband (who doesn’t ride, sigh). My 6’3” Dad had a blue 59 cm Clem on order when he died suddenly in 2020, and his blue Clem has sat, boxed, waiting for my boy to grow into it. I lugged the gargantuan box up from the basement last week to see how if the bike would fit. “Now that I’ve obtained optimal height,” my son is fond of saying… Anyway, he’s 6’1” now (likely still growing) and I need him to decide if he wants to stick with his old Clem H (that he was fond of) or settle into this Clem L. Because whichever bike he chooses is getting new wheels, dyno and fenders and going to college with him. At first he was opposed to the idea of a new Clem; he liked his old Clem, thought it looked cool. But after the - as he calls it - Big Bike was assembled, he really began to like it. “It looks elegant,” he said. It really does, all long and lithe, in blue and silver. He put his saddle and bags on the bike and we test rode it tonight. He said, “I am really liking the Big Bike. I like that my knees don’t have anything to hit (geez, were his knees hitting his bars?!) and it looks elegant. It feels more at home now that I have my old saddle on it.” I have mixed feelings about sending him to college with this bike, because it’s so nice. I also doubt he’ll be able to get it on a bus bike rack - and I have no idea how often he will want to do that. His bike life is totally unknown at this point. All I know is that I’m getting him dyno because the kid has never remembered to charge a light in his LIFE and I will not sleep at night without it.The 52 takes 650b wheels and the 59 takes 700c, so I don’t want to buy the wheels until I know which bike he really wants. But as of now, he wants his new bike.I know people will say we should just get a beater. I know why that would be advisable, but I also hate to think of a Clem languishing when it could be serving a noble purpose. I’d love for him and his Clem to journey through undergrad together.I am wondering…has anyone gone to college or sent their kid to college with a Clem? What do you have to say about it? Photos in the next post…Leah

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis Old vs New?

My 2004 53 cm (54?) Atlantis with 26” wheels features toe overlap and not much room out back with a “fist full of seatpost”, for big baggage. It’s pretty nimble off road snd very stable on. Set up with Albatross, love it. On Apr 27, 2023, at 06:57, 'peech1...@yahoo.com' via RBW Owners Bunch wrote:I am down to 2 bikes: a 2010 Hillborne and an Atlantis MIT.  Both are set up for upright riding with albatross bars.  I love them both.  Hillborne has the "toe clap overlip" (clever huh?) that the MIT doesn't.  Both have their merits with the hill borne seeming to be a zippier ride.  MIT is a tad more comfortable with 650b 47 tires as opposed to 700c 35 tires on the Sammy.  If I had to choose one bike it would be the Atlantis.  Just more comfortable and versatile.  Rivendell bikes really have improved my life.On Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at 10:25:24 PM UTC-5 Stephen wrote:I've never ridden an atlantis, older or newer, But I do ride a '21 joe appaloosa(60) (the joe is very similar to MIT atlantis) and a rambouillet(62/63), so I feel I can comment a little on long vs. short chainstays. In addition to taking the joe out on road and gravel, i treat it as my mountain bike. I've ridden a fair bit of twisty singletrack in NC and have never really felt inhibited by the long chainstays. Anytime theres a turn I can't make, I honestly wouldn't be able to do it on a shorter bike either. Also, I recently did a little test ride with a new packing setup and I felt it really demonstrated the magic of the long stays... rear rack and panniers. Just honestly blown away by how roomy the bike is and how out of the way the luggage is with the long rear end, and how little it affected the good handling of the bike. I'm typically a front basket guy, but these bikes do ride really nicely with the weight in the back. On other bikes I've had issue with my heels hitting the bags. Now the Ram with the more traditional geometry is also a fantastic riding bike. I'm not sure how the geometry compares to older atlantis', but the rear end is considerably shorter than the joe and MIT atlantis'. I currently run 700x38 panaracers on it and use it for paved and dirt roads. Obviously not as stable as the Joe on gravel, but its really a road bike and it kicks butt on pavement. I'd say I like the shorter rear end for pure road riding. If it were sturdier I could imagine putting bags on it for a tour, but it wouldn't be as spacious as the setup on the Joe.As others have stated, the older and newer atlantis' are really quite different bikes, and in choosing between options you just need to analyze what features you want. The newer models can fit bigger tires, are roomier, more stable, but come at the cost of being humungo bikes. For me personally, I like the extra tire clearance and I like having at least one long chainstay bike. These days its a bit of a key rivendell feature. I feel lucky to have both options in the stable. Also if its possible, the best thing to help in deciding is getting to try each style out to see what suits you. Maybe there is someone living close enough to you with a long chainstay bike you can try, or an older atlantis. worth checking the riv map John created or asking the group. On Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at 9:42:21 PM UTC-4 homer...@gmail.com wrote:My Toyo does not have “fork mounts” for a rack. Good for you, Jay. The fork steerers are uncut. The builds are very Riv-ish. Sugino cranks, Deore rear derailers, VO Porteur bars, SunTour friction thumbshifters, Tektro Oryx brakes. One bike has XT hubs, the other XTR. Tubus Cargo rear racks fitted with Busch and Muller 4D Toplights, Nitto M12 front racks with baskets. Paul Gino light mounts on the forks. Now here’s the catch — even though a lot of these parts are valuable, I’m not really interested in holding out for top dollar. I’d rather see these bikes get used in support of some sort of cycling advocacy. There’s a local non-profit community bike shop where I could drop them off, no problem. But I also remember a time in my life when money was tight and I had young daughters that I wanted to introduce to biking. I’m wondering if any of you kindred spirits out there in Riv-land  meet that description, and might be interested in working out some sort of deal for picking up one or both of these bikes on the cheap. Rich from Riv did build up a nice new set of wheels. Typically I put drop bars on my bikes but I decided to try something a little different this time. My 1999 and 2003 Road customs, also built for 26" wheels, are better "All Round" both on pavement and in dirt than either XO-1 and the first Road custom, with much longer chainstays, slightly sacker head, and upsloping tts with extended head tubes. I say again that the later Road customs ride better on dirt, particularly sandy surfaces, than the XO-1 and the first gen, AR-based road custom.I think -- but I am open to reasoned rebuttal -- that an Atlantis or Sam Hill would be better for all round riding than either

Put a strap around the rear rim and rack tray at the 6o'clock position. This is similar to how the thule T2 rack and some others operate. The front arm keeps the bike from falling over laterally or moving forward, and the strap keeps the rear wheel from bouncing up or the bike from moving backwards.Another approach i've mocked up but not actually tried is moving the horizontal 'pin' in the rear wheel arm down so that it contacts the tire below the rear fender. This would provide secure resistance against forward and back motion, but would still require the extra strap to keep the rear wheel from bouncing up.I had an older thule T2 for awhile. Dare I say favorite bike ever?  By far my favorite Riv ever; I had an orange Ram and a Toyo Homer since buying the Clem to chase the high but both didn't stick around too long.I've enjoyed countless miles of big smile casual riding, errand running, and short loaded tours. In summation this bike shines because of how versatile it is. I've ridden other bikes with "do it all" intentions (cross bike w/ racks) but the handling had much to be desired; far too responsive on the front end and too uncomfortable/sketchy when loaded on the rear end. Clem L fulfills the ability to be loaded and ride well. I really don't have any interest in drop bar touring bikes at any capacity while I have Clem L.Anywho, I just wanted to check in and share some iterations of the build, currently with a 1x12 transmission! I had a low-normal XT for a short time which was totally acceptable and novel. I think the best upgrade or change was the Sim Works Fun Bar 3 (RIP Terry Hall), I can't imagine going back to a bosco-type cockpit. If you're thinking about Clem L I highly suggest you CLEM IT UP. -Matt<52632307568_d17dede0d7_c.jpg><51274416243_3a37f1c90e_c.jpg><51273225695_70bd27b36c_c.jpg><52492573337_a65168034f_c (1).jpg><52303354108_fca2254841_c.jpg><52283682710_42d1a82bf8_c.jpg><51963057161_323262246a_c.jpg>

The short version: I’d like some advice on picking a fat bike (4-5” wide tires) that shares similar ride characteristics with the current crop of Rivendell long chainstay-long wheelbase bikes (e.g. Clem, Atlantis, Platy, Gus/Susie).The long version: I’m in the market for a full-on fat bike, with true 4-5 inch wide tires. I live in Montana and my previous winter riding with studded 3 inch tires just wasn’t enough. We’re a one car family, so in addition to riding on winter trails or snowy forest service roads for fun, I’ll use the bike for groceries and errands as well. And as much as I’d love an Atlantis or Platy for dirt roads, bike camping, and light trail use, the more economical choice would be to get a set of 29 inch wheels for a fat bike and run 2.8 or 3 inch tires in non-snow season for an all year off-road bike. Hence the importance of making a good choice now. How I came to desire a Rivendell-esq fat bike: A friend in another state got a 2019 Clem and raves about the comfy, stable ride with the long  chain stays/wheelbase. But the real kicker was when I got a Yuba Mundo Lux cargo bike (https://yubabikes.com/cargobikestore/yuba-mundo-lux/) for hauling my two kids around. The swept back bars get me sitting upright, and the crazy long chainstay (753mm) and wheelbase (1410) make 150lb loads totally manageable. It’s like a Cadillac. Since the Yuba, I’ve vowed that all my bikes will be long and upright. Fortunately upright stems and swept back bars can take care of the upright part for near any bike, so that leaves chainstay/wheelbase length as the big question for a fat bike. For reference, scroll down here (https://bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries=5d1ae74763bde8001707cf36,5e1faf637f17da00170c6e28,) and you can see the chainstay/wheelbase lengths on the Clem and Atlantis, both ~550mm for chainstays and ~1235mm for wheelbase. For fat bikes, consider these two models (https://bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries=5ff009522655ff0017c6e96a,61c0a2add559210021256cf2,). The Wyatt can actually have a longer wheelbase than the Rivendells with its sliding dropouts (1250 max wheelbase). But its chainstay is only 465, still long-ish for mountain bikes but not near what a Riv or cargo bike is. It achieves that with a slack head tube angle that pushes the front tire way out front.Alternatively, the Giant fat bike in the link has a similar max chainstay length as the Wyatt (460mm) but a shorter wheelbase (1170mm), leading to a more centered position on the bike. I’m unable to find any fat bikes with the combination of long chainstay/wheelbase that the Rivendell’s have.Any tips on which bike, and which geometry approach in general, would get me closest to the Rivendell/cargo bike-like comfort and ride quality? Other fat bikes? For simplicities sake, I guess don’t evaluate factors other than geometry, like frame material. For what it’s worth, there are very few chromoly fat bikes.(Sorry for the length! I appreciate anyone getting into such a bike-nerdy discussion)- Joe

Just traded one of my three sets for a pair of Lambdas. Are the Bubbly pedals grippy? On Dec 9, 2022, at 07:49, Minh wrote:i have the bubbly (in copper, had to order from japan last year), and they do spin crazy with your hand, but i'm not really sure if there is a lot of value to this?  one thing i'd like to hear is people's feedback on the bubbly and hot spots, IMHO, i can feel the edges of the bubbly cage more than my lambda pedals.   but then i ride in soft sneakers.  On Friday, December 9, 2022 at 10:26:43 AM UTC-5 maxcr wrote:Thank you everyone for your replies, here's my takeaway after reading your comments and taking apart the bear traps to make sure they were properly greased and tightened (full disclosure this is the first pedal I take apart):I found this video from Ron: https://youtu.be/sjGrbm2XxhM - take a look at minute 5:10 - mine definitely don't spin like that, but I'm not sure why, maybe they'll get smoother with use, since these are brand new out of the box.It does seem like Simworks Bubbly & sealed cartridge will feel way smoother than Bear Traps period, but that might not translate to any improved feeling when pedaling. Also, the consensus is that Bear Traps are ok/good pedals. Thanks again, I'll install them and see how they feel.MaxOn Friday, December 9, 2022 at 9:29:22 AM UTC-5 fra...@gmail.com wrote:The bear trap will get smoother over time but never match the Bubbly, the Bubbly is the smoothest pedal I’ve ever seen. Nothing wrong with the bear traps at all. On Friday, December 9, 2022 at 1:49:46 AM UTC-8 Garth wrote:Max,  your description sounds like they may be adjusted too tight, and/or you're simply noticing a difference between the open and cartridge bearings. Most pedals that I've owned didn't come with much grease either. More grease until it oozes out the sides !  Then make sure the bearing isn't loaded too much. Pedals from the factory are no guarantee of proper adjustment, not unlike Shimano hubs. As for the ability to spin, as long as it spins freely, it'll spin freely. Don't bother comparing the "feel" to cartridge bearing hubs because they're not cartridge bearings in the hubs. Neither bearing type means one will spin better or worse than the other. On Friday, December 9, 2022 at 1:50:12 AM UTC-5 Luke Hendrickson wrote:I have the OG Suntours and they spin for days. Not to say there's anything wrong with the Bear Traps, but the Bubbly pedals are on an entirely different level. That said, either option good and you shouldn't regret your decision, you did what works for the time being and maybe later on down the road you get to try the alternative, but I wouldn't dwell on it all that much.Jared in SLOOn Thursday, December 8, 2022 at 7:05:10 PM UTC-8 maxcr wrote:Hi Everyone,I decided to get new pedals for the bike I'm building. (Their next order was going to be in about a month at best)Reading through the forum I saw good comments on the Blue Lug Bear Trap III and ordered them in silver. They arrived today and I'm surprised because they feel much less smooth than the bubbly ones. To be fair they are much less expensive $62 vs $100 but still, is this normal? Is it the lack of sealed bearings that affects rotational performance? Will I feel a real difference if I go with one over the other? Thanks for your opinions and knowledge.Max in Boston

Re: [RBW] Using Your Rivendell Vs. Being Precious: A Spectrum

Austin City Limits needs valet bike parking like Sacramento Area Bicycle
Advocates offers at concerts. I parked a lot of crazy nice bikes at Aftershock
this year! No Rivendells on my night though.
In context, I ride my Atlantis and lean it on stuff and let it get scratches

I don’t lock it to public racks.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike rack

2022-07-30 Thread luckyturnip
No I don’t. I have the 2” heavy duty double with two single add ons. I also
have a minivan. So in the rare occasion the van is full and I can’t put two
bikes inside I need all four trays. In that case I put on the double onto the
car and then mount each add on separately.
But I don’t leave it on because it was a huge investment and I’m afraid it will
get swiped, so I wrassle that sucker inside for storage.

I love my 1-Up but it weighs so much. I have two add-ons so we can carry four
bikes, and I absolutely can’t keep it all assembled all the time...too heavy
and awkward. Also, on my son’s very large bike with rear Blackburn rack, the
rack “arm” can’t lock to the wheel on that end. I use a strap in addition to

Re: [RBW] Bike rack

2022-07-29 Thread luckyturnip
I’m always going to recommend the 1-up rack. Yes it’s very expensive. I finally
gave in and bought one because we have such a variety of bike sizes in my
household My only gripe is that it’s very heavy. (We do have the heavy duty
version because some of the bikes are quite large/long). But I’m very happy
with it (once it’s installed on the car).

I *really* want a Clydesdale fork. I had a bike in mind to put it on, but now
that they’re right in front of me, I can’t decide which to buy. I can only
afford one. My current bike has a 1” steerer (Klunker bike). But it’s an
expensive enough purchase that maybe it makes more sense to get the 1 1/8” for
more applications, and get a different bike…
I wouldn’t put it on my Atlantis personally because I think it would be too
heavy.

I was using the Kiley lights but it seems they redesigned them and a
front light only gives 2 hours now befor needing a recharged when on

Re: [RBW] Re: Welder to add v-brake posts in SF Bay Area / Napa?

Ahhh! Not to hijack but I had seen a pic of that MB-1 Erik Billings worked on
and didn’t know who did it! Mystery solved now (and since no one is buying my
MB-1 I guess it’s time to talk to a man about a fork…)

Looking to add v-brake posts to my Sam Hillborne and Cheviot (jealous of

I need a bike frame builder / welder who can add them and is not too busy.
Any recommendations? Preferably near Napa, but I can go a hour away for a
 good builder.

I tried John of Fitz Bikes in Santa Rosa but he's busy with frames (as he
should be). Tried Jim G Racks on instagram but haven't heard back for a
 while.
I don't need someone to paint the burned up sections after, I'll handle
 that myself.

 Any other recommendations?

 Take care,

They’re not brass but gold ano, nonetheless Cable Cherries by Forager Cycles
are an awfully pretty little accessory and small enough to look brass. Also
available at Velo Orange and Blue Lug.

[RBW] BOB list, lost to me

2021-12-29 Thread luckyturnip
Hey all, I have seen people ask before but I can’t figure out the solution. I
was a long time BOB list member before I was a Riv member but I can’t get back
in or even find the list without an error message anymore. I’d like to list my
MB-1 for sale there, can anyone tell me the secret handshake and or weblink I
need to get back on the iBOB list?
