Back on the bike for the first time in almost two months, the hiatus due to
a bout of sciatica. This lingering effects of this condition encouraged me
to ride easier than my normal fairly measured pace. Stuck to the
neighborhood. Cruised sedately but attentively and in slowing down got to
enjoy the beautiful Fall colors more fully than I otherwise might have. I
must say that the Appaloosa is a pleasure to ride at a slowed-down pace.
This is a bike whose cream accents are especially appropriate. Describing
the riding sensations experienced on riding a given bike is always a
difficult task as these impressions are always subjective. Regarding the
Appa, some descriptors that come to mind are "smooth," "stable" (while
remaining nimble) and yes..."creamy." Suffice to say it is a very
pleasurable bike to ride. Took some pics of the Appaloosa and Fall sites.

[RBW] Re: New bike day! Apppaloosa!

2017-08-20 Thread 'mlpessar' via RBW Owners Bunch
Sweet bike Michael! Congratulations. I've been riding mine (also butternut)
for six months now and loving it. Smooth, stable, nimble with a turn of
speed when that's what you feel like doing. GP regards this as Riv's most
versatile bike. I find it is more than capable of handling anything I might
ask of it, general transport, commuting, errand-running, touring. Just a
really fine bike. I am confident you'll enjoy it mightily. Thanks for the
post and pics. Wishing you many happy rides.

[RBW] Re: New Appaloosa

2017-06-28 Thread 'mlpessar' via RBW Owners Bunch
Very nice Andrew! I've been riding mine for going on five months and really
enjoying it. Smooth, comfortable and I agree with what has already been
mentioned, suprisingly nimble with a turn of speed (engine dependent of
course.) When contemplating the purchase I spoke to an individual at Riv
who would most certainly know. He mentioned that the Appaloosa was the most
versatile bike that Rivendell offers. This versatility is in line with my
experience and apparently with that of others who responded to this thread.
IMHO, it's a great bike! Congratulations.

OK, I must admit that I too was seduced by Sappho. I guess you can have too

occupies a med. Wald. Time to alternate as the same bag in blue is about to

for a shopping bag. That would be jake with me.

and a chance of thunder storms I decided to take the new Appaloosa out for
a cruise. The neighborhood is especially lovely this time of year, azaleas
hanging on to last blooms, dogwood fixing to burst forth and a rare stand

Western events (roping, cutting and barrel racing) and English events
(eventing and show jumping). It is also used in endurance events and is
raced. So there you have it: nimble, tough with a turn of speed.

All in all it came to an easy ride of an hour or so. Break any records? Not
a chance. Count cadence? Nope. Have a good time? You betcha bygolly wow. So
there you have it. Lots of good things happen when you're content to just

[RBW] Re: New bike--Joe Appaloosa

2017-04-17 Thread 'mlpessar' via RBW Owners Bunch
Beautiful bike Roberta. The magenta tape and cork grips look great. I'll
also mention the Brooks B67. I've started using one recently. I find it to
be comfortable although new. It works well the raised bars and upright
position I have on the bike. Comfort is always good.
Wishing you many happy rides.

Thanks for the positive remarks. I agree with you Joe. I too find that the
bike looks great in each of the colors Rivendell has chosen. It is pleasing
to the eye and within the limits of sanity would likely look good in most
if not all shades. Of paramount importance, it is a joy to ride.

[RBW] Re: book of possible interest to Rivendell riders

2017-03-31 Thread 'mlpessar' via RBW Owners Bunch
Interesting subject. Jim, thanks for the heads up on the book. I share the
notion that there are parallels between analog audio vs. digital, friction
vs. index shifting and automobile manual vs. automatic transmission.
Happily this is not an either/or situation. For "serious" listening I enjoy
vinyl however I appreciate the convenience of digital audio and the sound
quality of digital audio is steadily improving. High resolution audio files
with a solid reproduction chain sound pretty darn good and lack the
distraction of hiss, clicks and pops. I find friction shifting and the use
of manual transmission to be more satisfying than index shifting and an
auto transmission. I also appreciate that in the event of a damaging mishap
I am less likely to find the shifting mechanism MIA with a
friction-shifting bike. I enjoy an old stick shift sports car. It fosters
and rewards driver involvement. It is a fun car to drive. Would I want to
use it for daily commuting/errands? Not really. Here the convenience of an
automatic makes sense. (BTW I use a bike for transportation but there are
times when the use of a car makes more sense. This is another instance
where, depending on personal circumstances, there is no need to choose one
or the other exclusively.)

[RBW] Re: Bags

2017-03-19 Thread 'mlpessar' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'd go with medium over small. It is doubtful that you'll regret having
extra room. There will be occasions when you will need it. In addition the
extra room allows one not to worry too much about how the bag is loaded.
I'm a fan of the medium. I also have a large which is huge.

Roberta and Jeff, thanks very much for the mention of Gravel & Grind.
Unfortunately they are several hours away from my location. Should I find
myself in the Frederick vicinity I will definitely stop in. Roberta, happy
hunting.

Thanks very much for the helpful comments. I realize that there's no bad
choice here. Both great bikes. I had definitely been leaning toward the
Appaloosa and these comments have reinforced my feeling that it is the way
to go. I am a relative newcomer to this group and I must say how much I
appreciate the knowledgeable advice and the welcoming tone.

[RBW] ?Appaloosa versus Sam Hillborne

2017-02-03 Thread 'mlpessar' via RBW Owners Bunch
Guys, I have a good problem to have. I'm in the process of deciding between
an Appaloosa and a Sam Hillborne. I'd very much appreciate your input;
particularly from folks who are familiar with both of these bikes. 90%+ of
my riding is on pavement. The rest is light trail riding over occasionally
bumpy terrain. I am planning on some longer touring, specifically doing the
Great Allegheny Passage and C Canal this Spring. I will likely do this
with a mix of camping and B stays. I am an older guy (pushing seventy).
Comfort is definitely a consideration. In reading previous posts I have
noted that some feel what they describe as a sense of ease on the
Appaloosa. That sounds appealing. For those who share that perception could
you characterize that more fully? I also understand that the Sam is a more
"spritely" ride. For those who have ridden both bikes how would you
describe what distinguishes the two? Are these differences relatively
subtle or easily noticeable? I hope that the above makes sense. I am more
than happy to provide additional info. Unfortunately at present there are
no Rivendell dealers in my region nor have I yet to see a Riv in the wild
in my neck of the woods.
Thanks,
Marc

Could it simply be a play on "*el*" as in "the" Roadini?
