[RBW] Re: Best practice with Sunrace Thumbshifters

2024-02-07 Thread Berkeleyan
Joe, yes, she's also a pure friction shifter. I'm looking into how I can
increase the diameter of the barrel OR gain leverage on the ancient front
Derailer. And honestly folks, I get that these are ideal for "inside"
mounting to use both thumb and fingers to achieve the full swing of the
lever. If it were just me, would not be an issue. But her muscle memory is
brittle in that way.

[RBW] Best practice with Sunrace Thumbshifters

2024-02-07 Thread Berkeleyan
Brief background, my wife's 1995 B'Stone X0-5 thumb shifters died after a
mild crash. I replaced them with the beautiful Sunrace thumbies from the
mothership website. Now she complains...

She has Dove bars (like Albatross but more straight-back at the grips) and
cork grips, and she was used to the old shifters being closer to her hands
than I can get the Sunracers, when mounted in the "outer" position. She
tried them mounted as "inner" shifters but couldn't get the knack of using
thumbs to press down and finger to left back up. I also think the shifters
are further away from the bar than she was used to, and have a longer swing.

When mounted outboard, is there a trick to get less cable pulled so the
swing of the shifter is a shorter arc? Maybe that's all about mechanical
advantage at the derailer. I'm wondering if anyone else has worked through
all the permutations of the "outsider" mounting to find a best way.

I have a threaded through-axle with big heavy 17mm nuts, front and back.
And I carry a Park bottle opener with 17mm socket on the end to remove the
wheels. It works fine, I don't mind the extra effort. And yes, I enjoy the
QB's up-angled rear forks (dropouts) which let me keep the brake pads
"pretty much" aligned with the rim when I flip between 17 and 19, or flop
over to the fixed 16. For a ride in the flats through traffic, I'm on the
17. If heading up into the lowland hills, I stop and change to the 19. And
stand on the pedals a lot, and even then sometimes get off and walk.

[RBW] Re: Roaduno and the state of single speed bikes

2024-02-04 Thread Berkeleyan
The paint and fancier lugs on the RoadUno are beautiful, glad to see this
coming. Still, I love my 66cm QuickBeam. I stick with a single ring up
front and a Dos ENO 17-19 freewheel on the rear, with a 16 fixed cog on the
other side. It gets me anywhere in Berkeley except up the steepest hills,
and also serves as a fine S24O steed (I rode it from Ferry Building over GG
Bridge to Corte Madera for Entmoot that one time. The thing maybe not clear
until you ride a single is the extra body english you're going to be
employing - I stand on the pedals a lot, and do paperboy up many slopes.
This is fine, the delight of not ever shifting while riding is exquisite,
and I enjoy the tighter bond with the bike. It's the "one" bike I'll never
let go of.

[RBW] Re: New Build Day! Two Speed Road Bike

Ah, so you shift the rear DOS ENO by turning the thumbscrew bolt, brilliant
and simple. That gives you a low range two-speed for hills, and a high
range two-speed for the flats. I have the hub on my QuickBeam, and I bet
you're able to swap cogs faster than I can, since I have 17mm nuts to deal

It's a different ride, and a fun ride, to have a single speed. I have a Dos

17 comes into play for East Bay hills, but I rode (with camping gear) in
the 15 from Berkeley to the Entmoot in Marin via San Francisco and
Sausalito/Tiburon, and it was delightful. With no levers to move, you focus

To borrow a trite phrase, The Nivex shows that RH Cycles have jumped the

[RBW] MIssing Link closing in Berkeley - whither the LBS

2022-11-23 Thread Berkeleyan
Well, the RBW link may simply be that Missing Link was a Bridgestone
dealer, back when my wife bought her XO-5 there in 199x. I've patronized
them for bits and parts throughout the years, and counted on them being
there. But now, with the tower-ization of downtown Berkeley, they've lost
their lease and will shutter by end of year.

Damn, such a loss. For me, for local cyclists, for anyone who appreciates
the funky and esoteric charm that small shops bring to communities.

[RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2022-11-16 Thread Berkeleyan
I'm in for the long haul. I bought Moustache Bars from RBW for my REI XR
way back in the early 1990's, so that must have been when Grant first put
up a sign.

When I was doored in 1997, I used the insurance settlement toward a
custom-sized 65cm LongLow, which I still have, and love. Phil hubs,
six-speed Sachs Freewheel, it just rides and rides and rides.

Later, I found a 66cm QuickBeam on Craigs, and it became my "second" bike,
fitted with a Dos Enos flip-flop rear hub and Bullmoose bars. It has been
to an Entmoot (China Camp) and just about everywhere in the East Bay.

Most recently, I had my friend Mark Guglielmana build up a custom frame
modeled between my LongLow and a Hunqapillar (ergo, Diagatube) and fitted
for a Rohloff hub. Totally Riv-inspired, and a delight to take on loaded
tours. It does sport a re-raked RBW fork, but with bosses re-brazed for
MAFAC centerpulls.

And I'm only 61, so who knows what the next 10-20 years will hold!

RBW content - I owe my 1998 Rivendell LongLow Custom to getting doored in
west Berkeley. I was coming back from (high carbohydrate) lunch at
Jack-in-da-Box and was pedaling my lugged steel Centurion past parked cars
when a door swung open and caught me in the ribs - immediate full stop. A
painful injury, entirely not my fault. Long story short, the car driver's
insurance company agreed to a cash settlement, and I poured it it into a
custom RBW frame (and full set of components). The LongLow is still in the

Here's some discussion on lower rake, and consequences for handling.

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/1164491-people-who-have-had-forks-re-raked-lower-tr-do-you-notice-lowered-front-end-2.html

My custom Rohlhoffer Diagatube frame has a re-raked RBW fork, and we did
that specifically to accommodate carrying weight in front (I have a great
big WaxWing Porteur sitting on a small front rack). I also have two
low-rider racks I have not yet used. For reference, I also have a '98
LongLow and an Orange 66cm QuickBeam, both with stock forks. The stock
forks make for quick and light unladen handling, and both feel heavier with
Wald baskets and ShopSacks. Heavier, but not really problematic, and I
appreciate the convenience of gear up front, whether shopping, riding to a
picnic, or camping. The handling on the re-raked fork is quite light
without any weight on the fork, but feels really good with a full bag, and
I'm glad we made the modification, it's perfect for all the riding I do.

[RBW] Re: Why did you buy your first Riv?

2021-12-12 Thread Berkeleyan
Why? Because I had an insurance settlement from getting doored in west
Berkeley, and I had a RBW catalogue in hand, having previously bought
Moustache Bars for my Novara XR "cross" bike from REI. I wrote to Grant,
and we settled on a 65cm LongLow frame. He took in all my specs, and the
frame was built by Joe Stark. Painted by Joe Bell. This was 1998... I built
it up with M-bars, Shimao 105 shifting components, Phil bottom bracket &
rear hub, half-step + granny mated to a Sachs six-speed freewheel, and
Sunracer rims. I was delighted beyond belief at the fit of the bike,
perfectly matching my legs, arms. The reach to the bars was excellent, and
it was fun & fast, no compromises at all.

https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-vj9MScf/0/L/i-vj9MScf-L.jpg

It still rides strong, only changes have been to mini-vee brakes, drop
bars, and thin Gripster pedals.

I've given the Albastach bars a good test on my new frame, and they're

Yes, the Albas are going to be available.

Re: [RBW] Fenders for bikes with big tires

2021-10-03 Thread Berkeleyan
I have VO fluted 52mm Zeppelin fenders on my 700x44 Compass tires
(Snoqualmie Pass) mounted to Velocity Dyan rims. The tires measure 41mm
when inflated to around 35psi (so delightful to ride). I like the fenders
and the fitment. I'm using a RBW front fork, and the 52mm fenders had to be
squished just a bit to fit, no way the 63mm would have fit there without
Dremel tool cutting. What annoyed me was the front tire & fender would
contact & chirp when I made quick tight turns, or stood on the pedals
uphill. I've stopped the chirping by both spreading the fender just a bit
wider and securely tightening the bolts that attach the stays.

I think if you go for a wider tire, you'll definitely want the 63mmm
fenders. And know that the aluminum fenders will take careful fitting and
adjusting, but will look beautiful.

[RBW] New Banana Sack

2021-10-03 Thread Berkeleyan

My Khaki Banana Sack came last week, and it has a new (yes?) feature since
the Grid-Grey one I have from couple years ago. There's a lightweight
interior flap, attached at the lip of the compartment, that you can swing
out like a dog's panting tongue, stow all yer stuff inside, and then put
the flap over it all before closing the lid. Seems it will hold everything
extra-secure inside, and I like it.

The Khaki fabric is thicker than in the past, and is not a "grid" style.
Really nice.

What I don't understand is why the leather straps aren't shipped ready to
fit perfectly to a Brooks Saddle and Nitto seatpost. I had to add a hole to
the seatpost leather to get a snug fit, and go through many contortions to
get the bag snug up to the saddle loops. Or maybe I'm the only one who
doesn't like a bag flopping about under the saddle?

[RBW] Re: No love for the Albastache?

2021-09-18 Thread Berkeleyan
One more... prompted by Will's email comment today of "properly set up
Albastache bars" for long road rides. I keep wondering about best brake
placement on these bars. In your opinion, does that mean brake levers are
approximately tangent to the same plane, as in Will's picture of the bike
they're sending to Philly bike expo? Or do your brakes fall further inside
(closer to stem) or outside?

[RBW] Testing for interest, my '98 LongLow 65cm needs a new home

2021-08-10 Thread Berkeleyan
I now have a new Riv-ish second road bike, and the LongLow should go to a
good home. This was built in 1998 by Joe Stark from Grant's specifications
for my height and reach, and painted by Joe Bell. I will try to sell it as
a complete bike before considering pulling the parts off. I think $2,000 is
the right price.

The build is a mix of old and not-so-old. Phil BB and rear hub, Ritchey
cranks, a Sachs six-speed freewheel (less dish on rear wheel) with a 13-30
spread. The brakes are Tektro mini-Vees, which I found just perfect and
grippy after working through different sets of cantilevers. Nitto S-83
seatpost and Nitto stem. Interrupters on the Noodle bars. Lots of spare
bits.

I love the smooth ride of this bicycle, and never hesitate to get on and
ride all day, or for five days on long loops. The forks were repaired after
I broke a cantilever pivot, and Ed Litton brazed a new one on and shot the
forks in glossy black - a little odd-looking for a Riv but not
objectionable. I'm riding Compass tires at the moment, which measure 35mm,
and clear the fenders, but I don't think you'll fit anything wider.

[RBW] Re: No love for the Albastache?

2021-07-04 Thread Berkeleyan
I'm building up a new bike, custom Riv-inspired frame with RBW fork, and
have assembled it enough to both pedal and brake. More to do, I need to get
it shifting and the rear brake cabled, and wiring for lights... but right
now it's been my first weekend riding it around the neighborhood and
fiddling with the Albastache bars. It's a tall frame, 66cm, on big tires
(700x44). I have a relatively short Nitto stem, and am playing with the
stem height, bars angle, and brake angle and position. I rode for over a
decade on original M-bars, on my 65 cm LongLow, before swapping to wide
Noodles. The Albastache bars are better than the M-bars, no question. The
extra width and the shallower drop are feeling good, I'm liking them a lot,
everything fits. More to say soon.

[RBW] Re: New look for rivbike.com and new News blog

2021-02-12 Thread Berkeleyan
Dave, it's better than the old site, thanks!

My initial suggestions are to (1) have the masthead "stick" to the top of
the browser window, so I always have access to the triple-bar widget, and
the human head, magnifying glass, and shopping cart icons. (please consider
activating the script that will let their proper functions appear as a
strip of text when the mouse is hovered over them), and (2) work to let
each page have some reference anchor back to the page or category it came

collection of cycling tips, but I don't know that it's one of several
articles in a group on cycling tips when I'm there looking at it.

And bravo on the order history in the view of my account! Wow, I have spent

Indeed, I've carried my Scotch, as well as my beer, in a grid-grey

Okay, after reading the obscure details on the R1, I stand corrected.
Despite the shocking shortcoming of its very limited PBH range, it has one
great advantage over the QB of yore, and THAT is support for wider tires. I
tried running Bruce Gordon Rock 'n Roads (38mm) on my Orange QB, and they

[RBW] Re: ROADUNO - a new singlespeed!

2020-12-11 Thread Berkeleyan
How will it be different than a QuickBeam? That's more of a rhetorical
question, maybe just asking what was there to improve on a QB that a R1
will get right? My 66cm QuickBeam (Orange) already has *adjustable* wheel
base, is fully lugged, and has proved versatile enough for a loaded S24O, a
55 mile Brevet, all my local grocery shopping and restaurant dinner takeout
pickup. I know, it's just the RBW "way" for bike models (apart from
Atlantis) to have limited runs, frames that carry their cachet for
years/decades beyond their end-of-run date. I'm never letting go of my QB,
but I hope the R1 is an awesome frame that sells like begeezus.

- Andrew, Berkeley

p.s. It took me a while to get the new sticker - "nothing" is greater than
a bicycle!

2020-12-09 Thread Berkeleyan
For me, it's a *Tillley*. I have two, one in a greenish tint, the other
Johnny Cash black. The green goes camping, backpacking, and bicycle
touring, the black is for Zoom calls and walking to restaurants before
covid times. They are superb in all aspects of construction, give very good
shade, are reasonably rain-resistant, have a secret pocket for C-notes, and
best of all, come in real hat sizes. I have a size 8 head, this is
important.

Shorts also claimed, but for anyone curious, they are exactly 18 inches

11.5 inches across, flat, and are 20.5 inches below the waist, along the
sides.
