[RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho... stem question

2024-03-11 Thread Chris K
Thank you all for the pics and advice! Very helpful.

I'm putting these bars on a 1985 Trek 870. As Riv says on their cardboard
geo charts "don't obsess", but geometrically this old frame is not terribly
far off some Riv models, setting aside, of course, bb drop and stack (1985
Trek 870: 21.8" frame, 71º hta, 71.5º sta, 58.0 tt, 48.5 cs, 5.0 drop, 52.7
stack, 40.6 reach).

My current set-up is Choco bars and an 8cm Dirt Drop. The height feels
fine, just slightly above saddle height, and the reach isn't bad either but
could be ~1" longer. I'm fairly upright but can lean in and grip forward as
needed. I just like the idea of more width and more flare.

Are these details helpful? I'm maybe leaning toward the 135mm Faceplater
based on your replies, but that does seem long!

[RBW] Ron's Ortho... stem question

2024-03-10 Thread Chris K
Hey all, I've got some Ortho Bars in my cart and looking for stem advice
from those who use this bar. Obv there are multiple fit and frame factors
that play into something like this, but curious what people are generally
going with. Here are the options I'm deciding between:

- Faceplater 110mm
- Faceplater 135mm
- Tallux 12cm

Will the 110 Faceplater be too short?

J, question about your mothbars - do you find yourself ever using other
hand positions?

Intrigued by this bar but it looks like holding on anywhere but the ends
would be awkward with such a wide bar.

2023-12-04 Thread Chris K
With several more rides and miles, I am liking it more and more. I like the
ability to move around on it. No soreness. Currently set up in a fairly
upright position, around 60º or so.

The horn is still a little wider than I would prefer, but I guess I'm
getting used to it.

2023-11-15 Thread Chris K
Just put one on and I'm not sure I like it... yet. The material is comfy
but I can't tell where I should be sitting on it, if that makes any sense.
Coming from an Ergon saddle the nose of the Riv saddle is super wide.
That's my least favorite part of the shape.

[RBW] Bridgestone CB-0 59mm for sale

2023-04-14 Thread Chris K
I wanted to see if anyone here is interested in this frame before I put it
up on my local Craigslist (Denver).

The frame is the largest size, 59mm. Here's a link to the frame geometry.

The components are a mish-mash, some are probably original but all need a
little attention. The frame has some superficial rust spots. I rode it
around town for a few years.

Not even sure what to ask for it. $100 + shipping? If you are looking for
this specific frame let me know.

[RBW] Your preferred handlebar for longer rides

2022-10-20 Thread Chris K
Just a general question to the group: what handlebar do you like best for
rides longer than say, 15 miles?

I assume many of you would say drops. So to refine the question a bit, what
non-drop bar do you like best for longer rides?

Personally, almost all of my rides are in the 2-15 mile range. I run bike
errands and/or commute by bike in the city most days, accounting for most
of these miles. For this mileage and use, the Billie bar is a proven winner
for me. However, this summer I took a few 20-30 mile rides further afield
and felt myself wanting something different. Part of my problem is I only
have one bike - an around-town errand bike that is being asked to go on
longer rides on both pavement and gravel, and hills start to come into
play. The other problem is I want to stick with MTB levers and shifters. I
don't want to do a drop bar conversion. I did pick up both a Choco and a
Wavie to try out. No significant miles ridden with them yet though.

Anyway, I know it comes down to personal preference and many other factors.
Nonetheless, I do wonder which of the Rivendell handlebars emerge as
favorites for longer riding?

Re: [RBW] Re: Best all-around useful saddlebag?

2022-09-30 Thread Chris K
Question - can you run a handlebar bag, or a saddlebag on the handlebars
bikepacking-style, if you have canti brakes? How does one negotiate the
cable?

2022-08-25 Thread Chris K
Good stuff. Thanks, all! I did in fact I did get a new bike and haven't yet
bought a bag! It will complement the bag nicely :)

Wanted to say a quick thank you for all of these really helpful replies.
Being my first post, it didn't appear for several days and I sort of lost
track of this thread. Next thing you know it's a month later and I found
all of your great answers. Haven't bought a bag yet, but it will surely be
one of the ones mentioned here. Delayed the purchase as I'm thinking of
buying a new bike first :)

[RBW] Best all-around useful saddlebag?

2022-04-15 Thread Chris K
Hi all - I'm new to the group and figured you all would have opinions on
"the best all-around useful saddle bag," if you could only own one.

For context, I ride a Bridgestone CB-0 set up with a front rack and Wald
basket. This is great, but I sometimes wish for a little more capacity in
the form of a bag. Based on Rivendell's site, the Bagboy or the Happisack
seem to fit this "all-around useful" purpose and size. I mostly ride around
town but want to do some overnights this summer as well.

Would you recommend definitely getting one over the other? I'm also looking
at the Swift Zeitgeist or Catalyst.

Thanks!
