Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-27 Thread Conway Bennett
Bill,

Thanks for the clarification. My posts weren't meant to be adversarial,
just pedantic. I came into Riv via EcoVelo ~2010, and I didn't own my
first Riv until 2013, so the "Soba" predates me, and I thought that y'all
were using it colloquially for "So Bar"--the marketing content from Sim
Works makes references to literal soba noodles. I'm curious if the
contemporary "So Bar" is inspired by the "Soba".

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-26 Thread Conway Bennett
I think the So Bar came out in the fall of 2018. Here's the intro from Sim
Works:

https://sim-works.com/en/news/ramen-nope-i-take-so-bar

They also appear to have a sleeve. But I've never owned the So Bar, so I
don't know what the production model was like in practice. I had a 50 cm
Rando Bar from Velo Orange that I really liked at the time the So Bar was
released, and that's why I didn't buy it, but I love 50 cm + drop bars.

It seems as though there is plans for a new iteration of the So Bar. Sim
Works USA wrote, "These were a very popular bar that we've temporarily
discontinued while we make some changes to a new version."

I'm a bit of a Noodle/drop bar connoisseur myself. I currently in use the
Crust Nullabar on my Monstercross, Sim Works Wild Honey on my Lightning
Bolt, and Ritchey Corralitos on my Hunqapillar. I wish the Fairweather All
Road 174 AA bar was offered in a wider size, but my criticism of the 54 cm
Noodle is that it lost the back sweep that enjoyed in the Noodle as it got
wider.

Where did y'all read these were a lightweight Nitto Noodle? They are
listed at 380 grams which is inline with other Noodles. My understanding
was they were 50 cm wide--two cm wider than the then widest 48 cm
offering. Then, Riv went all 7 minute abs and released the 52 and 54
centimeter variants. I recently had a conversation with someone at Riv
regarding the widest Noodles who said that Nitto is trying to deprecate the
26.0 clamp diameter. I personally have had 46 cm Noodles, the Fairweather

[RBW] Re: Fashion help wanted: ISO nice looking cycling gloves

2024-04-24 Thread Conway Bennett
I only ride drop bars, and I don't wrap the flats--I just put ESI extra
chunky grips on the drops. So, for longer rides, I bought Men's Body
Geometry Grail Short Finger Gloves from Specialized. I wanted something
without Velcro because I didn't want to trash the cuffs on my cold weather
gear, and this is what I could find.

I definitely have a used 172.5 XD2 triple, a used 40 tooth Sugino
chainring, and a new 32 tooth Willow chainring I'd sell.

With the long dropout, I can use 40/17 (99%+ of my riding), 40/19,
32/19 or 32/22. I like to say I have the world’s least convenient 4 speed.
I haven’t “shifted” the bike about 5 years or more, but in the first 8
years that I owned it, I would take it for long recreational rides and
 need
to downshift for some hills. For the locals: I even rode it up Old La
 Honda
years ago, I think in the 32/19, maybe the 32/22. Age and 2 bouts with
cancer have made a single speed bike only suitable for commuting for me
now, but it’s great for that.

I’d definitely recommend 2 chainrings at about 8t difference if you
want some versatility. I have the pop off SKS fender stay things, and pack
an old gardening glove in my saddle bag so I can change the gearing
 without
 getting too messy.

I have a brand new in the package Dia Compe Tech 77s I'd like to sell.

Re: [RBW] Advantages of triple drivetrains (VO post)

2024-01-09 Thread Conway Bennett
I dissent. Front derailers are unnecessarily complicated to setup, and so
are triple chainrings, especially on XD2s. I have 1X 10 one two bikes, and
love it, and I just specced a 1X 11 with a Deore 5100 derailer and 11-51
cassette for my BMC Monstercross. The whole drivetrain cost less than a
nice triple crankset, it's all lighter too. Check out Analog Cycles for
inspiration.

*Simplicity and Effectiveness* While 1x systems boast simplicity, the
emphasis on constant shifting may be overstated. Many riders find
themselves primarily using the middle ring, operating as a 1x system with
added flexibility to adapt to different terrain.

The point that triples are usually used as 1Xs with low and high ranges
available is the key, I think. I know that, even with 10 or 11 in back,
 I'd
not want a 1X, and even a 1X + granny (ie, very wide range subcompact 2X)
would leave me wanting easy-shifting gears for steep rolling offroad
terrain (which I don't ride anymore), as I found when I swapped out a 3X7
for a 2X9 on my erstwhile Fargo. For road use including heavy loads and
steep hills the 2X9 was easier to use and provided sufficient range with
close cruising steps, but I did miss the middle-ring range between about
65" and 35" which comes with the middle ring on a 46/36/24 triple.

Re: [RBW] Considering trading my Ram for a Lightning Bolt

2023-10-25 Thread Conway Bennett
I have a Crust Canti-Lightning Bolt, and it's one of the best bikes I've
ever ridden. The most similar bike I have had to the Ram is two
Quickbeams, first in a 60, then in a 58--I've sold them both, but I would
be unlikely to part ways with the Lightning Bolt unless I upgraded somehow
(e.g., Jeff Lyon). I think the thing about the Lightning Bolt is that is
so different than my 650b Hunqapillar that I split my time with--its like
going from supportive hiking boots to a pair Vans. They are both
comfortable, just very different from one another. Because of my
experience with the Lightning Bolt, I have been getting more into go fast
solo rides, and I will probably try to buy the next 59 Canti-Romulus that
comes up for sale.

This whole thread inspired me to wrap up a few things on my own 650b
conversion project, an RB-1, and to ride my Ram one last time this
weekend. (It's supposed to start snowing this weekend, so season's over
 I'm affraid).

Interesting thing about the Ram, that strikes me every time, is how
comfortable or "plush" it feels, despite only having 33.33 tires. I don't
understand why. When it was new, it made "normal" road bikes, with 23 to
28mm tires look positively silly. As the rest of the industry has caught
up and embraced fatter tires, the Ram now "looks' outdated next to a lot
 of
other, newer bikes I saw. My own tendency is almost always to choose
something with fatter tires, too. But as I said, I'm struck every time by
how well it rides and how relevant it still is. I don’t think I'll ever
sell it, even if I have to be "prompted" to ride it once in a while. I
think if I ever felt differently, I'd now consider Alex's example.

I'd stop before North Avenue Beach. I suggest heading Northwest at Irving
Park. You can stop at Wrigley Field which is a much finer tourist trap
than Navy Pier, and then work your way to the North Shore Channel Trail
which goes all the way to Evanston. There are so many more quality food
and drink options on this route.

I'm sort of in. There are sections of the Lakefront trail that are great.
I'd recommend avoiding North Avenue to McCormick Place on a Saturday in

Yes, lots of lurkers here. I recently have had issues with questionable
PayPal payments and having unknown quantities ask a bunch of questions
about FS: items then disappear. I actually prefer just selling on eBay now
because of the grief associated with the list.

Can anyone recommend padded cycling gloves without Velcro--I hate Velcro

I'm inventorying and culling my parts bins. So, I came up with 2 x 9
Shimano Bar End Shifters & 3 x 9 Suntour XC Pro Thumb Shifters. The
Shimano shifters are well used, so $40 net to me shipped in the lower 48.
The Suntour shifters are gently used, so $45 net to me shipped in the lower
48.

pairs nicely with this bar assuming you have a shim. $69 net to me shipped

2023-03-04 Thread Conway Bennett
I'm amending this. $134 net to me shipped in the lower 48. My pricing is
50% off of items that you can still buy new and the lowest price I found on
online resellers for items that are no longer in production, and I factored
in the 16% eBay would take if I sold it there.

I can confirm that they run small, but it's still a tight fit on the '94

feel like rubber bands!

[RBW] Re: Bags like the Grabsack?

I bought two fifth season squall sacks, and I am impressed by their quality
and simplicity. You could get a grab sack and have one of the many outdoor
gear repair companies modify it. There's a lot of cross pollination and up
cycling going on.

[RBW] Re: Are Billy Bonkers narrower than listed?

2023-01-04 Thread Conway Bennett
RTPs were a non starter on the '94 XO-3. This bike has been languishing in
the rafters since 2019 once the original headset was too indexed to
service. I had sold off the wheels for it too, but I recently bought a new
headset and wheelset because I thought the 2.1 gravel kings would be the
ideal tire. Maybe I'll parlay my quickbeam and xo-3 into a disc romancer.

Thanks Garth. They mounted to the RIM with no tools and minimal effort.
It has to do with clearance issues with the frame and fork. I used to run
26 x 50 Schwalbe kojaks with no issue in aeroheat and cliffhanger rims, so
I presumed the 26 x 2.1 gravel kings would work.

Anyone want to trade new folding Billy Bonkers, gently used Natches Pass,
or new Homage tires for a new pair of Gravel Kings?

Or, I may just be done with idiosyncratic bikes (e.g. Quickbeams and Xo-3s).

Re: [RBW] Bombadil and Hunqapillar origins: The definitive thread

2022-12-12 Thread Conway Bennett
Hunqapillars we're $1850 in 2011 when I became aware of them. I paid $2000
for a used 650b which was the final iteration. I feel like it cost $2500
new.

Re: [RBW] Is there a 31.8 clamp drop bar comparable to a Nitto Noodle 54cm?

2022-12-08 Thread Conway Bennett
Scott,

I ride tumbleweed prospector bars for the last 6 months with a discord
fingerling stem, but I like drops but got used to the width. I did
purchase the new 54 cm Nitto noodle, but I have not ridden it yet. My dark
horse pick for wide bars is the vo rando bar that comes in 50 cm wide.
Since I have these, I can't justify the Renee Herse option at 4x the price.

[RBW] Re: How you choose 2 Rivendells?

2022-12-06 Thread Conway Bennett
I have my Hunqapillar and my partner has a Rosco Bubbaloosa ATB Mixte, so
that's two. I currently have a Quickbeam too, but that's on its own way
out. I also owned a Sam Hillborne, but gasp, I was never comfortable
enough on it. The only current Riv that I like is the Appaloosa, but it
would be redundant. I have always wanted a canti-Romulus or an All Rounder
and would buy either if it wasn't a hassle in any way.

[RBW] FS: 58 cm Green Quickbeam

2022-12-05 Thread Conway Bennett
I have an embarrassment of riches, and I don't have time or desire to make
granular decisions about which bike to ride. I have been riding with both
of my kids lashed to my Hunqapillar, so this bike has been ridden in over a
year, so I think it's time to move it along. This is a riders bike, and it
has plenty of beausage. I am at least the second owner, and it has been
well. It is currently located in Chicagoland, and I have a box ready to
pack and ship it. The price for the bike as listed below is $1000 net to
me via Chase QuickPay. Buyer pays for shipping and provides prepaid
shipping label.

So, for your consideration is a:

Road Runner Bags are the best bicycle bags. The Jumbo Jammer is my all

I nominate my 650b Hunqapillar. It's the most comfortable bike I've

upright handlebars--it feels different but good with each.

Good thread. I'm a 2TTer. I learned about Riv ~2010 through ecovelo which
has a presence again on Instagram and cyclofiend. My first Rivendell I
bought was a 2TT Sam I got new for sub $1000, but I lusted after a
Hunqapillar first because of the grey bean paint but especially after
riding one at HQ--back then Hunqs were only $1850. I currently have a
Hunqapillar and my wife has a Rosco Bubbaloosa. I was drinking Riv Kool
aid for a bit, but now I have a crust canti lightning bolt and a BMC
Monstercross on deck. The Appaloosa was the last Riv I really liked, but I
like 650b and the option of drop bars.

This was intended as a drop bar handlebar bag, and it measures at 9x5.5x7
or at least 14 apples with room to spare. I doubt it will work as a saddle

[RBW] Re: Green QB and Rock and Roads

2022-09-17 Thread Conway Bennett
Dave,

I have that bike, and those are my all time favorite tires. I never mated
the two, but I have had wider tires than that on my Quickbeam.

[RBW] FS: Nitto Faceplate Quill Stems, Crust Shaka Bar, Paul Neo Retros

2022-09-16 Thread Conway Bennett
I'm moving to a 31.8 faceplate stem and v brake ecosystem across all of my
bikes for universal compatibility, so I have the following up for grabs:

Crust x Nitto UI 12 Quill Stem with 26.0 clamp $75

Nitto UI 12 Quill Stem with 10 cm extension and 31.8 clamp $70

Crust x Nitto Shaka handlebar 26.0 clamp 54 cm wide $115

One bikes worth of Paul Neo Retro brakes with Moon Units and Short Nitto
Rear Cable Hanger. All hardware is accounted for, but these not come with
brake pads. I will also include some extra Paul bits I have. $170

I also have an all but new set of Skinwall Specialized Sawtooth 2Bliss
tires in 650 x 48 I tried and liked, but I prefer Schwalbe G One Speed
tires.

Prices are net to me, and I would prefer local sales. For shipping, I
recommend buying it through pirate ship and then emailing me the label.

Thanks in advance,

Conway

Re: [RBW] WTB Nitto Dirt Drop Stem, preferably 26.0 and 100mm

2022-09-04 Thread Conway Bennett
I have 10 cm one I'd probably sell. It was on my Sam Hillborne and has
lots of miles on it, but I am switching to the faceplate ecosystem. With
that said, it's going to be a PITA to disassemble.

[RBW] WTT: My Paul Comp Neo Retros for your Mini Motos

2022-08-01 Thread Conway Bennett
I have a well used but well functioning bikes worth of silver Paul Neo
Retros, but I want to switch to mini v brakes. If you have bikes worth
Paul mini motos you would trade, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise, what mini v
brakes do folks like--shimano, promax, box?

Thanks in advance!

Fair winds,

Captain Conway
