I agree. Errands are a great way to get pedaling out in the fresh air. Most of mine range from 6-8 miles ( hardware, grocery, the occassional doctor appt). Even my commute is only about 8-10 miles of riding on a Brompton broken up with a train ride. All these rides start and end on our gravel river trail where I constantly spot eagles, falcons cranes, goats grazing (to reduce fire hazard), and the construction of a fish ladder to aid salmon spawning. [RBW] Rivendell Banana Sack
I replaced my Saddlesack small with a Banana Sax and it’s worked out well. Unless I needed to carry a fleece or a jacket, I just wasn’t using the space offered with the Saddlesack. It’s surprisingly large. I hang it on the back of a Brooks Flyer Special with the springs. I do find that the springs keep me from overstuffing it. I’m sure I could mount it lower on the springs or get a little more clearance with Anna’s clever dowel rod hack but I haven’t felt the need. I can fit multiple tubes, a large multitool, levers, patch kit, tire gauge, wallet, smart phone, snack bar, sunscreen and keys with a little room to spare. The one thing I can’t fit in it is a U lock. I strap that on the back rack with a dutch strap. A folding lock might fit, though. The two pockets are nice for organizing small stuff and the new ones have an internal flap that lifts up from the bottom to keep anything from falling out. Access is easy although access to the Saddlesack was easier. I could flip open the top to the Saddlesack and see and reach everything with ease. The Banana Sax requires me to stack the contents more. The reason I changed was mostly to try the Banana to reduce what I carry and to support Riv which I try to do occasionally despite not really needing much for my bikes. I also wanted to see what it would be like to eliminate the back-of-the-thigh rub. I’d gotten used to it but like the Banana Sax better without the rub. I personally like using the Banana Sax better than the small Saddlesack. If I need to carry more, I strap a Wald and Shopsack on the front rack with an Irish strap. [RBW] Silver2 shifters have arrived!
I usually observe Adbusters’ annual “buy nothing day” today. Instead, I decided to swing by Riv HQ this morning and made a new pair of shifters (and other things) my only black friday purchase. The shifters look fantastic in person. Can’t wait to get them on the Hillborne. It was also nice to see all the new models in the showroom. There was a well-ridden green Gus I was drooling over. The 2.8 tires looked so fun. Their tall Homer with the curved, second top tub looked pretty amazing, too. I’ve got several years on my older, canti Sam and can’t imagine ever giving it up. I’m always reminded that it’s the best bike I’ve ever owned every time I ride it. Do yourself a favor. Get a second wheelset. Swapouts are a breeze. Takes me very little time to swap from road Sam to dirt Sam. Fenders add a little challenge. Enjoy the ride for many years to come. [RBW] OT: non-bike hobbies
Sorry to hear about the accident David. Buy an old house. Based on my experience, that’ll keep you busy for a solid decade. I’m just wrapping up the last big project, the kitchen remodel in our 1924 bungalow. We hired some of it but my wife and I are building the cabinetry ourselves. With an old house your “hobbies” become woodworking, drywall, demolition (my wife’s favorite), plumbing, electrical and landscaping. None of it’s cheap but it does add to the value of your home. After the kitchen’s done we’re building out the pottery studio so I can get back to a hobby I haven’t done in 20 years. I love my Barlow Pass Extralights. The Bon Jon Pass tires came out right after I bought them and I was disappointed that I missed the opportunity for thinner and lighter (last road tires I had bought were 23mm on a Bianchi). Now that I've adjusted to my "fast road tires" being 38mm wide, I really appreciate having the extra cushion. I don't think I'd notice a ride difference in the weight. I didn't like the body position and how far back they came. I also could not find that second hand position everyone talks about. If it was down in the lower portion, that was too close to the stem for what I would consider comfortable control. This is only my opinion because I love Albastache bars. My wife loved the Boscos because she only likes riding bikes with a very upright position. She hated that bike until I put the Boscos on.
