Re: [RBW] Re: 26” tire advice

2019-07-17 Thread Kellie Stapleton
Hi Toshi: I’m using Velocity Cliffhangers which are tubeless compatible. I
ordered a kit (sealant, tubeless valves and tape) from Stan’s No Tubes to
complete the tubeless process. You’ll fill the tires with sealant, and then
again about every 6 months. If you start to get a flat the sealant will seal
it, unless it’s a gash on you sidewall. So, theoretically you never need a
inner tube, but You ALWAYS carry one, in case. Some people prefer Orange
sealant but I’ve had no problems with Stan’s. I got my first flat before I went
tubeless on the Thunder Burts, on the street, then switched and never looked
back. There’s good videos “on how,” on the Stan’s website; also WTB and
probably all over YouTube.

Re: [RBW] REMINDER: Coffee Outside Bay Area

2017-03-24 Thread Kellie Stapleton
I’ve been using an alcohol stove off the bike for the last few years and also
used them camping. They work well, nothing to recycle like a canister stove,
and one uses denatured alcohol which you can find at hardware and paint stores.
Also cheap; a gallon will last you forever for about $12. I bought a little kit
called the Caldera Keg and it’s in the picture announcing the last coffee
outside. Here’s a link:
https://www.traildesigns.com/stoves/caldera-keg-f-stove-system
 Only downside
for alcohol is below freezing. There’s canister stoves like this:
https://www.rei.com/product/114890/msr-pocketrocket-2-stove
 but more
expensive and then you collect empty canisters. They’re efficient and boil
water fast. I’ve also used the Whisperlite which lasted about 15; used when I
backpack. This has a refillable bottle:
https://www.rei.com/product/830342/msr-whisperlite-universal-backpacking-stove

a little more finicky than a canister, but you can use in any weather and
boils water fast.

I like the Caldera keg kit because the keg acts as the pot and is included in
the price. Not too expensive. Also very stable and has wind blocking inherently
built in. Here’s a good resource: http://www.bikepacking.com/all-posts/

My LBS told me that I needed to have an air compressor to make the tires

that if you don't ride them regularly, it's better to use tubes because the
tire will come off the bead, which relates to needing (again) to have an
 air compressor to seat.

I can't imagine random guys running tubeless all have air compressors in
their respective garages. Or do they?

 2. HED Belgium C2+ is another wide, rim braking rim that works well. More
expensive than the Pacentis, but I've had great results with, both tubed

[RBW] Re: Homer brake improvements?

2015-01-19 Thread Kellie Stapleton
I had side pulls when I got my first Rivendell; it was built at RBW
headquarters. I was never that thrilled with them and when I built up my
Cheviot a couple a months ago I splurged for Paul Racers (centerpulls).
They are incredible and I probably wouldn't use any other brake again!

On Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 10:27:02 AM UTC-8, Doug Williams wrote:

I ordered a 58cm 650b Homer Hilsen on December 30th to take advantage of
the coupon. So now I am just biding my time waiting for the frame and
selecting components. Actually, most of the selection is done and I ordered
virtually all the parts…but I could always still tweak things. For one
thing, I haven’t yet ordered the wheelset.

Anyway, I test rode several bikes before I settled on the 650b Homer with
albatross bars. Very nice! The one thing that could use a little
improvement on the bikes that I test rode is the Tektro R559 brakes. Don’t
get me wrong...nothing is really wrong with them and they were certainly
adequate. But I thought they were just a little slow in stopping the bike.
Perhaps I’m spoiled by the disk brakes on my other bike but I have no
desire for disk brakes on a road bike or country bike.

I have no doubt that RBW will setup and adjust the brakes for optimal
performance. But I was wondering what other tweaks I could use to improve
the R559 performance. Careful rim selection comes to mind, and I plan to
discuss that with Rich. What about compressionless brake housing? Or what
about Kool Stop or Yokozuna Brake Pads? Would either of these make any real
difference or would I just be (pardon the pun) spinning my wheels?

real-world experiences from other riders. Does the slightly thicker tread

Thanks Patrick. I gave my Hillborne to my daughter; she got the Rivendell bug.
But she deserves a great bike; she rode from Santa Cruz to New Orleans last

[RBW] Re: cork grips - shellac vs. spar varnish

2014-04-12 Thread Kellie Stapleton
so far I've left mine natural because I see the shellac flake (yuk). The
spar varnish does look fantastic.

On Saturday, April 12, 2014 6:07:06 AM UTC-7, Ron Mc wrote:

I come from a bamboo fly rod background, and we used flexible coatings to
turn fibrous materials into tough composites - spar varnish, and maybe as
exotic as mastic varnish on silk thread wraps or to turn an old silk braid

was natural for me to coat it with spar varnish. Later wraps, found out
shellac is awesome for this application because twine wraps on a bike don't
need to be flexible - twine it, shellac it, and it's good to go and go.
More than 2 coats would also be a mistake.

While I haven't tried shellac on cork grips, its use there doesn't make
sense. Take a soft grippy material and put a hard slick exoskeleton on it
 - seems to defeat every purpose of a cork grip.
Three years ago, when I put cork grips on my daughter's upright bike, I
used spar varnish and here's the result 3 years later - it's soft and
grippy, and still beads water like a new Ferrari

 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/aaP4110005.jpg

That's the good news - now the bad news: you have to be patient, because
it takes 7 days to do this right (hey, it takes a month to mastic-varnish a
silk fly line). You want 5 coats, and wait a day between each coat to let
it soak and cure. You apply thin coats and of course the cork sucks it
right up. Wait a day and apply another. It won't be until the 4th coat
that you can see the cork is sealed and you're apply a build-up. After the
last coat, give it two days to cure, and it will still feel tacky - don't
worry. Take a lint-free cloth and buff it like you're shining shoes. You
will be delighted with the result for years...

[RBW] Re: Sew own frame bags?

2014-01-13 Thread Kellie Stapleton
Hi Anne. Here's a link for a DIY bag. I'm impressed with it and he and his
girlfriend are using them on their So. Africa tour.
http://www.pedalingnowhere.com/gear/diy-longflap-saddlebag-minimalist-bike-touring/#.UtR97xY45IA
Besides Revelate, there's also Porcelin Rocket. He will custom sew. But he
also has the saddle bags and handle bar bags. I've been using the handle
bar setup for over a year, and my daughter just left with it on her tour
down the CA coast.

f you have done that, what fabric did you use and where did you buy
it? I'm looking at 1050 denier coated ballistics nylon or 330 or 500
denier Cordura from Seattle Fabrics, or 840 denier coated ballistics
nylon or 500 denier Cordura from Quest Outfitters. I definitely want
something waterproof, but I'm not sure how to choose between weight
 and strength.

Also, if you have made a frame bag, how wide did you make it? Did you
flare it at the front? What did you use for padding for the edges, if
anything? How does it attach to the bike?

My bike is going to be a size small. The Krampus has a sloping top
tube, so that means a tiny little triangle, and lots of seatpost
showing. That suggests room for another triangle-shaped bag above the
top tube, in the triangle between top tube and seatpost. Has anyone
 tried that?

focus on the beauty of the ride instead of pace, and embrace beausage as my
one year old HIllborne starts to show it's wear. I've changed to flat
pedals from cleats and though I took home my Hillborne with a moustache
bar, today I'm off to RBW to get everything to connvert to an Albatross bar

forever be in perfect condition. As a result, things that should don't get
used. James has learned this behavior/thinking pattern, and the word
beausage is opening his mind and heart to seeing the beauty of things that
have been used. He's looking at everything in his home differently and
much happier for it. Funny how this simple idea with a coined word

This frame really is beautiful in person. The clichè that pictures don't

[RBW] Re: Carradice Barley mounting options for saddle without loops?

Carradice sells loops for saddles without them. I used the SQR system from
Carradice and really liked it. There's also the Bagman by Carradice others
have mentioned. However you do need a minimum amount of seatpost showing to
use the Bagman.

pedaling, so getting it away from my backside is a bit of a priority.

I was considering this setup. It is quite ugly, but seems like it would
 be effective:
 http://www.wiggle.com/carradice-bagman-2-sport-support-bag-mount-qr/

Rivendell sells the R-14 rear rack, which seems like it would work fine
for the purpose, and looks pretty, but it costs more than twice as much.
 http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/r14.htm

 Any thoughts?

I do have some regular old racks just lying around too. That might be a
cheaper fix. Just have to dig through the boxes in the garage to find
 one...

can ride trails with my Noodles. I have Albatross bars on my LHT so I am
familiar with those too. And I'm aware of Rivendell's Nitto
Bullmoose--cool bars, but the Jones are even wider with more hand
 positions.

What I'm really wondering about is experience folks might have with 1 to
1 1/8 conversions using either a stem adapter like this
 http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/stems/threadless-stems/vo-threadless-stem-adaptor.htmlor
using a quill stem with an open face 31.8 clamp diameter like this:
 http://www.origin-8.com/product-description/?prod_model_uid=7262

Pro of the stem adapter is that I can then whatever stem I want; pro of a
quill open face is that it's cheaper and perhaps slightly (but ever so)
 more elegant.

Are folks aware of other quill open face 31.8 stems--something NOS? Salsa
made an open face quill for sometime but I'm pretty it was only in
 25.4--maybe 26.

Thanks for any advice. I think I've got it covered, but thought I'd run
it by this always helpful bunch.

[RBW] Re: Which RBW Velosophies have worked for you? Which haven't?

2013-12-03 Thread Kellie Stapleton
Wow! After all my life in either clips or cleats, childhood excepted, I've
got an order in for Thin Gripsters. They'll be here Thurs., install and
begin a new era on my bike(s). Already changed to: higher bars, thicker
tires, racks and fenders, and a Brooks. Oh, it's a Sam!

On Tuesday, November 19, 2013 9:05:09 PM UTC-8, Michael wrote:

Thought hearing from you all would make an interesting thread.
I have been enjoying my Sam for a long time now.
I call these RBW ideas because that is where I first heard about them
(thought I know they have been around for years, just not embraced so much
these days). I was an alu/composite race bike kinda rider until I started
to fear carbon failures and wanted to look into an all metal bike.

 I'll start:

*RBW ideas that worked for me:*
*1. Wider tires.* This has made a huge diff for my quality of riding. I
used to own a typical race bike with 700 x 25, 120psi tires.
It was great to ride, but hard to handle as it banged and bounced and
tires got yanked around on gravelly, busted up shoulders. Not to mention
the fear of getting the narrow tires caught in longitudinal road cracks.
Got my Rivendell bikes and have used 32mm-40mm ~55psi tires on them and
 what a difference.
No more bike bouncing. Slight rumbling and I am through the rough road
parts. Tires stay on their straight course through the bad patches and I
feel so much safer. Cush to boot. Very stable handling.
I cannot see myself ever going back to anything narrower than 32mm wide
tires. They seem dangerous to me now.
*2. Fenders.* I never woulda dreamed of putting these on a bike in the
past. But now I don't see riding without them making any sense to me. It is
just good to be prepared and not have to worry about grunging up the bike
with the street scum. They look great to boot, and are standard equipment
on my bikes. I love the ultra coverage of the longboards.
*3. Leather saddles.* No more butt pain. yay! What a smooth surface to
sit on. I did have a little break in for a coupla weeks, but another dab o'
proofhide broke her in and now its great.
 *4. Steel bike/lugs/cream headtubes/metal head badges.* Such a stable
ride, beautiful to look at, and no worries about did I tension that bolt
1nM too far?. Feels good to not have to wonder about failures. The lugs
 and paint jobs are intoxicating.
 *5. Smaller chainrings/bigger cassettes/Triples.* Healthiest pedaling I
have ever felt in my legs. The Sugino toothcounts work great for my neck of
the woods. I would never want to go back to 39-52 or 30-40-54 cranks again.
And, I have discovered that compact cranksets aren't for me. I love triples.
*6. Big Saddle bags.* I love that I can carry lunch, repair
kits/tools and a jacket in my Carradice, etc. So convenient. No more
wondering how will I fit everything into my small nylon wedge.
*7. Cotton tape/twine and shellac.* I balked at the idea as just taking
things too far. But when my Sam arrived with it, it just looked so
beautiful and natural and much better than electrical tape. Its fun to do,
 too!
*8. Bar end shifters.* At first I thought that it was ridiculous not to
have the convenience of brifters on a bike. But when I got my first Rivbike
with bar ends, it was love at first shift. Just makes it so much more fun
to play with those things than brifting. I think it also encourages your
hands to move around more on the bars and I think that helps keep the
numbness at bay. A quiet friction shift is a very satisfying sensation. And
 trimming is fun, too.
*9. Platform pedals/ditching the click-ins.* I started using MKS Touring
pedals and cannot see myself ever going back to click ins. It is so nice to
be able to move the foot around and to just hop off the bike and walk
normally and not feel weird in public duck walking. Starting up at green
lights, all I have to do is just stand on the pedal and go. I don't have to
fumble across the intersection anymore to click in. And think of all that
cash I save by not having to buy expensive click in shoes and cleats/pedals.
*10. Kickstands.* Having previously viewed these as bike anchors, I
started realizing it just makes things sooo much easier when parking
the bike in the garage, hopping off the bike for breaks/taking pictures,
and they are just fun to install and look at. I love the rat-at-at-at-at
sound the Pletscher makes when it is flipped.
*11. 650b.* At first I thought: why?... And then: Aw, man!
Now I am forced into getting these smaller wheels if I want a Rivendell.
Why is this guy messing around with these bikes like this?. But the
clearance allows me to enjoy the convenience of fenders and safety and cush
 of wide tires.
*12. Ponchos.* Air circulates. Less sweating under cover.
*13. Wool.* In summer, any material will be drenched and sticking to my
skin. But come seasons of 75 degrees and less, the wool dries out so
 quickly that

Before concluding the problem in this case was the width of the JB, you
should try a 32mm tire with known low rolling resistance such as the
Grand Bois Cypres or the 32mm Pasela.

[RBW] Shifting

plans to take it on a 2 month tour and wants upright bars. Currently is has
drops with Sram Apex derailleurs and brifters. Can I convert to thumb
shifters with a new handlebar? Of course I'd need new brake levers too.

I believe Apex derailleurs are compatible with Shimano and Microshift
shifters, right? If so, the combination of Microshift thumb shifters or
Shimano bar ends Paul Thumbies ought to do it.

Well, I have a Sam Hillborne with friction, 9 speed. I do get some ghost
