Re: [RBW] Re: Question about rear brake cable housing routing with low friction on a Clem

2024-04-12 Thread R. Alexis
Allan,

Excellent use of that 135 degree noodle. I have used a couple of these to
route derailleur cable from the SunTour Command shifters in place of more
cumbersome full cable run on my Wilderness Trail Bike Dirt Drop bar OX
Brand Ti 29er cruiser. Also used a 90 degree one on the front cable hanger
on my Gary Fisher Gemini tandem with Surly Open bar. Made for smoother
cable routing.

I would say a bike shop probably has them sitting in a parts drawer, but
some shops may just toss them. Depends on the shop.

Nice seeing standard canti's in use on these bikes.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

Re: [RBW] Re: Gus /Susie bottom bracket -which one?

2024-02-22 Thread R. Alexis
Looking at IRD website the IRD Quad has a 73mm conversion cups and a
conversion washer to change the 68 to a 73. Bottom brackets without a
shoulder can be mounted to work with both 68 and 73mm bottom brackets. The
bottom bracket would fit further in the shell. I did this with a TruVativ
Powerspline bottom bracket. Had the shoulder machined off the 68mm driver
side to fit further in the 73mm bottom bracket. The person that took it to
have it machined didn't know to leave the tool mounting splines. I ended up
putting spanner pins in to install.

Does the current spindle length work and fit for your use? Do both the arms
and chainring clear sufficiently? Are you changing cranks?

I know that on my SunTour cranks with 110/74 BCD and 175mm length I think
they specify possibly a 125 or 127mm spindle, but 122.5mm spindles have fit
fine on my bikes. Only bike using 127mm is the Schwinn High Plains
Aluminum.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: WTB: Drop Bar/Stem/brake/shifter set up

I have something kicking around, but I don't know that you want it. Came
off a GMC Denali bike that I converted to flat bar set up. Shifters are
SRAM MRX something or another 7 speed. Otherwise, I have a Profile bar with
Shimano brake levers mounted. Let me know if interested.

[RBW] Re: The Official Introduction of RoadeoRosa

2024-02-21 Thread R. Alexis
Bill,

That bikes looks nice!! I personally prefer canits over calipers for
brakes. My "Road Bike" is my 1987 Schwinn Voyageur touring bike. I do have
some actual road bikes with caliper brakes, but prefer cantis. The pink
color really looks good. Didn't realize the Rene Herse brakes were that
finicky. I thought they employed a wedge washer or something to set the toe
in.

On an unrelated note, really enjoy seeing some of your machining and other
projects.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: Best practice with Sunrace Thumbshifters

2024-02-11 Thread R. Alexis
Hello Andrew,

What shifters did she have on the bike before? When you said the shifters
died, what happened? Lever actually break? Was wondering if there was a way
to make the old shifters still work.

Shop I frequent replaced some old Shimano brifters that had thumb shifters.
The 4 anchors nubs broke on the shifter mounting. Looked at how to make it
work. I initially was able to drill out recesses where the mounting, anchor
nubs used to be and tried using the smallest ball bearing to hold it in
place. The shifter ended up sitting a little too tall on the mount. Ended
up cutting small pieces of a broken spoke to fit in the closed recess of
the mount and protrude into the drilled out recess. Once remounted this
helped to anchor the shifter body and work again.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] FS or Trade: Clipless Pedals

2024-01-19 Thread R. Alexis
Hi folks. I am clearing out some stuff and ran across a set of "Panda"
Shimano PD-M515 pedals I have no use for. Left pedal is black and right one

some laying round. Looking at $25 shipped. Would be interested in trade.
Let me know what you have. I cannot think of anything I really need.

Re: [RBW] Re: RAGBRAI?

2024-01-17 Thread R. Alexis
BRAN(Bike Ride Across Nebraska) is still going as far as I know. As apposed
to RAGBRAI, it is a lot smaller. I think registration is limited to 500 or
so. Might be even smaller. Someone described RAGBRAI as a party atmosphere
that happens to have bikes involved. BRAN, from what I understand is way
less party atmosphere.

Friend thought of doing RAGBRAI and having husband roll with one of their
campers, but I reminded her and she saw all the stuff that didn't appeal to
her like crowds, heat, hills, other erratic riders.

Who knows about Bike Film Festival?

I paid for the pass to watch this year’s videos and it was money
well-spent. I got to the RAGBRAI documentary last night. Wow. I had heard
of it but really knew nothing about it and now I would just love to figure
out how to ride it this year. It just looks like such an experience. And
I’ve had very few experiences, because I’m late to the bike adventure
 scene
AND I’ve been raising kids! But now they are teenagers and might not even
know that I’m gone so maybe I should ride this epic ride!

There are a ton of logistics I don’t understand. I think you need a
“charter” to haul your stuff, yes? And to bring you back across the state
after you finish? And if you use these “charters” do they trash your bike
in their racks or will they have something that can handle a a mixte with
fenders? Is there are charter that is more friendly to Riv bikes than the
 others?

Also, no camping. I’m really hoping to end up in a hotel or some sort
of dwelling. I don’t have any tents, don’t know how to pitch tents and so
on. This may be the thing I can’t plan my way out of, because there are so
many riders moving through tiny host towns.

I’ll look up more info tonight after I get my chores done! But it
really is so exciting to imagine riding my bike across a whole state…
 Also,
it’s Real Winter here in Michigan, so maybe that’s why this hits different.

Re: [RBW] Re: RAGBRAI?

2024-01-16 Thread R. Alexis
Hello Patrick,

You are good on the name.

I posted a pic of my Rivendell Mountain a bit ago. Probably 2022 after
doing Corporate Cycling Challenge in August. I think I posted both on RBW
Owner Bunch and IBOB lists. Can probably see it with a search.

The Thudbuster Uni-Pivot works well. Been wanting to possibly change out
for a Cane Creek Thudbuster ST, but they the new 4G redesign is not
tripping my trigger. Would prefer the 3G version. The eeSilk+ seems to be a
good alternate option. The other issue is the black anodizing. I would
prefer a silver or the dark smoke silver that the limited edition eeSilk
initial offer stem came in. My post still works, but just thinking ahead
and the parallel movement is an improvement over the initial uni-pivot
design.

Like I mentioned before, At the time I ordered this I also was a bit
enamored with the Softride Beam bikes that were out there. The titanium one
Bob Roll raced on, the Ritchey, Breezer, Otis Guy. Going with the Softride
stem and Thudbuster suspension post on the Riv Mountain satisfied my desire
to go with a beam bike. Makes for a comfortable riding set up. For a ride
like RAGBRAI, it sat at the top of my list of bikes to use.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: RAGBRAI?

2024-01-15 Thread R. Alexis
Leah,

I took the opportunity to ride the first day of RAGBRAI last summer. I live
in eastern Nebraska. I happened to be off that weekend, heard it was
starting that weekend and that it was the 50th anniversary of the ride. Had
always thought of doing at least the first day, but never took the
opportunity to look into it and would find out the morning of when local
news would do reports on it. I took the opportunity. I enjoyed it, even if
I tried to bite off too much in the process. I think if you are going to do
the whole thing you best look at the dates and locations and figure out
hotel/motel stays now. It is not a race, but definitely get conditioned for
the heat, humidity and hills before hand. My plan was to ride to the second
to last city location and double back in order to get in a century. I fell
short of that and wished I would have just rode to the end city and called
it a day. First day miles to the end city was 77. I estimated I did about
64 miles in my attempt to ride back to Sioux City. Sag truck ended up
taking me to Storm Lake, IA where and I ended calling out a mayday to a
friend to pick me up and get me back to Sioux City to my car.

I rode my Rivendell Mountain because I felt it would be the most
comfortable with it's Softride suspension stem and Thudbuster Uni-Pivot
post. The next bike I was considering was the OX Brand Ti Cruiser 29er. Got
some compliments on the Riv. Ran into some fellow RBW/iBOB members and
chatted for a bit.

The logistics can be much. Deciding if you want to park on the west Iowa
and get shuttled back after or park in east Iowa and have your
transportation handy once it is done. Ran into some folks at the first day
stop. One gal had threw in the towel after the first 5 or so miles. She
ended up hitching a ride to the final to retrieve her vehicle so her and
the rest of her group could could use it for camping purposes the rest of
the ride.

Amtrak does run through the state out of Chicago going to California, The
Omaha station will probably be the closest one the start location. One of
the folks I chatted with said she had a friend that took Amtrak to Omaha
and rode from Omaha to Sioux City to start the ride.

Good luck with getting things figured out.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: 135mm hub rear wheel in a roadini?

2023-12-18 Thread R. Alexis
Check with Rivendell to see if this a safe option. I would think it is. I
have a mix of both 130 and 135 OLD bikes in the mix with a few 140mm. My
1987 Schwinn Voyageur is 130mm that I have a 132.5 wheelset mounted on.
Pretty sure the frame was 126mm OLD prior to me getting it. Settled on that
on the wheel to give me the option of going in a 130 or 135mm OLD frame. I
have about several bikes with 130mm OLD. Bridgestone MB-0 (Zip),
Bridgestone XO-1, Bianchi Perigrine, Schwinn High Plains Aluminum and the
Schwinn Voyageur. Wanted to spread the Zip to 135, but was cautioned not
to. The Schwinn High Plains Aluminum is a no go because of the aluminum.
Both Zip and XO-1 are using Mavic Paris Gao Dakar hubs. Bianchi is rolling
on some Specialized sealed bearing freewheel hubs and the Schwinn is
rolling on Shimano Deore DX hubs I swapped out axles and redished down to
130mm OLD. Voyageur is running Suntour Superbe Pro.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: Silver2 cranks!

2023-11-28 Thread R. Alexis
Was walking past one of my bikes the other day and thought the Sugino AT
cranks and the Specialized Flag cranks bare some resemblance to the
upcoming Silver 2 cranks. On another note, I was surprised that Rivendell
didn't go with a hidden arm crank ala Ritchey. Probably too much of a pain
to deal with.

I have some Bontrager XXX foam grips on my 1994 Bridgestone MB-1 retro
ride. I like them. Also using a combination of small trimmed remain
sections of Bontrager XR Silicone and Race Lite X/RXL foam grips on my Gary
Fisher Tandem on the front with Surly Bikes Open Bar using SRAM Grip Shift.
Really liking the set up. Considering replacing the older Bontrager Dual
Compound ergo grips on my Bontrager single speed with some Bontrager XR
Silicone, some ESI grips https://esigrips.com/ or some Chucks
Grips https://www.chucksgrips.com/ when I change out some stuff. Have some
Wilderness Trail Bikes/WTB Original Trail Grips on my WTB Bon Tempe and the
Magura modified WTB grips on my Rivendell Mountain.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis date indicators

2023-11-10 Thread R. Alexis
A Waterford built Rivendell Atlantis will have a distinctive rear frame
drop out. I think Henry James rear drop outs. The first Rivendell built
there didn't. Grant has drop outs made specifically for the bikes. Looks
like they went with the Waterford standard ones on the Atlantis. This is at
least what I have noticed when looking at Atlantis frames/bikes out of
Waterford.

[RBW] RAGBRAI 2023 50th Anniversary Ride

2023-08-29 Thread R. Alexis
RBW List Members,

I had a chance to ride the first day of RAGBRAI late last month. Things
aligned that I had that weekend off and then discovered the first day of
RAGBRAI was that Sunday and that it was the 50th anniversary of the ride.
Found out that late Friday and thought about it. After thinking of doing a
possible century that Saturday and not doing it I decided to jump in and do
the first day of RAGBRAI that Sunday and also do a century by turning
around at the second to last stop and going back. By my calculations doing
so would have put me at the century mark. First day was 71 miles to the end
city.

I was on the Rivendell Mountain. Met some list RBW/iBOB members along the
way. Names escape me. There was three of them, I think all from the Chicago
area. One riding a 650B converted Trek stating he had just gotten an
Appaloosa earlier in the week, another on a Sam Hillborne and the other on
a Bridgestone RB-T or T 1000.

I fell short of my goal. In doubling back I calculated I got to 64 miles.
Should have just rode to the end and hitched a ride back. Still enjoyed
doing the ride. If I do it again will definitely be more prepared.

Re: [RBW] Upcoming Riv Ride: Chicago

2023-08-23 Thread R. Alexis
Wish it was a different weekend. Would give me an excuse to get back to the
Chi and bring the Rivendell Mountain with. Look forward to seeing pics and
posts.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

If we are considering other route options, as others are suggesting
perhaps the North Branch Tail could be combined with the Lake Front Trail.
I sketched a quick route from Mack's south on the LFT to the North Avenue
Beach, then back north on the LFT until cutting west to Half Acre Beer
Co ., which has food, beer, and
an outdoor patio. From there, the ride could connect back to Mack's via
 the
North Branch Trail, but before stopping, see the nearby Baháʼí House
 of Worship
 .

Here's a map of that concept

[RBW] Re: Tried and liked: Suntour Cyclone pretzel

2023-08-01 Thread R. Alexis
That does not look good. Maybe once you get it into a stand and carefully
remove the derailleur and gently realign the hanger you will be fine. The
rear der pully cage can probably be bent back into shape. Issue is probably
trusting it. Hope things work out. Glad you were not hurt.

[RBW] Re: Seat angle

2023-07-22 Thread R. Alexis
I would be game for a trip to DMOIA. I am not that far here in Fremont,
Nebraska (just outside Omaha) and have done the trip through many times to
Chicago. Would be nice to meet or see some list members again. I thing
there was some mention a while ago either on this list or iBOB about a
possible gathering in Omaha or Lincoln, Nebraska.

As for Brooks set up, I have two B-17 saddles on by Bridgestone XO-1 and
MB-1. I think I have both level or with a slight tilt. I always wondered on
those bikes I see with the Brooks saddle tilted way up. Will see how things
shake out once I get more riding on it.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Nice brake bits: Shovel Research

2023-07-22 Thread R. Alexis
Thank you for the info. This brake cable hanger looks nice! I have a Kona
one on my Rivendell Mountain from when I initially built it. Bought
several. This set up worked better than the Syncros Hang Doggie that I
initially planned to use on that build. The Softride suspension stem set up
would have made things a little tight. Thinking of doing this for an
upgrade.

[RBW] Re: Mid-build Frustrations—Trek Elance 400

2023-06-20 Thread R. Alexis
I am probably not one to offer out how to get this going. I have a couple
projects myself that need pushed along. You may have to force yourself to
schedule the time for some of the things to get and finish the build. I
have a Gary Fisher Gemini tandem that sat for several years before I
finally pulled it out of the area it had been hanging out in last fall to
get it redone and rolling. Couple things changed in how I planned to build
it. Those changes worked out for the better. This same thing happened when
I built my Rivendell Mountain. Initial plans were to build it rigid with a
Nitto made Ritchey stem and standard seatpost which I had not picked out.
After looking at Softride Beam bikes and suspension stems I decided to go
with a Softride suspension stem and Thudbuster Uni-Pivot seatpost. Love the
set up and the only change I would make is to get a Cane Creek 3G
Thudbuster ST seatpost or the eeSilk+ to replace the Uni-Pivot. Only wish
they came in silver. Probably would have made the switch a while ago if
that were the case.

Do what you can. Sometimes the direction of the build can take a turn in
the process or after. Have fun with it.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: SunTour Shifter, plastic washer falling apart.

2023-06-19 Thread R. Alexis
I noticed in a few Rivendell employee and Grant's bikes the brass washer. I
know in the past Grant has mentioned replacing that plastic washer with a
solid brass one, but that the cost was prohibitive. I figured the ones
showing on their bikes were prototypes or fabricated solid ones. I have the
original Suntour Sprint shifters on my Schwinn and got a set of the
Rivendell Silver 2 shifters a short while ago. I got the replacement black
washers to have on hand just in case years ago for my Sprint shifters.
Looks like they compromised on the making of the Silver 2 shifters by
incorporating an alloy washer cover over the plastic. Wonder if you could
reduce the inner hole indentation on that domed brass washer to do the same
thing.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: Underbiking

2023-05-24 Thread R. Alexis
Dirt Drop mountain bikes are currently at a resurgence. The number of
flared drop bars is at an all time high. The fact that Nitto finally
started making the the dirt drop probably cemented its return. I have
several bikes with Wilderness Trail Bikes Dirt Drop bars and one with a
flared Nitto RM014 flared drop on my Schwinn Voyageur touring bike. With
gravel bikes currently part of the mainstream mix flared drops have settled
in. The Surly Corner Bar Is a good example of the popularity of this type
of bar. https://surlybikes.com/parts/corner_bar

I have been a fan of the dirt drop bar since I first saw a 89 Trek 970
mountain bike built with them. I think they are the perfect all rounder
bar. The flair gives a nice, natural hand position, multiple hand
locations. The other bar bar I have been happy with are the Jones H-Bar.
Got a similar Surly Open Bar mounted on my Gary Fisher Gemini tandem in the
captains position.

Anyone here interested in this frameset. Working to clear some things out.
I may have a threaded headset from the remains of a Razor or Razor clone

[RBW] Re: Let's talk about the All Rounder

2023-03-22 Thread R. Alexis
Hello all.

I don't have an All Rounder, but I do have the first generation Waterford
built Rivendell Mountain. Those first generation Rivendell Road, Allrounder
and Mountain offered several options when ordering. Rack mount placement,
Headtube extention, cream painted accent headtube, etc. I remember when
ordering and mulling over things asking Grant about getting the bike built
with KGB(Koski, Guy, Breezer) hooded drop outs on the frame and rollercam
mounts. He gave a had no on the Breezer drop outs, but did offer to do the
rollercam brake mounts. I ended up just doing standard canti brakes.

Although a lot of the features offered on later Rivendells are nice, the
more time passes, the more I am less likely to give up my Rivendell
Mountain. It is still configured the way I built it originally. I have
changed out things, just to change them back. Swapped out the Suntour
XC-Pro thumb shifters for XC-Pro Wishbone shifters, then changed back.
Changed out the Wilderness Trail Bikes SST saddle for a Brooks B17, then
changed back. I did finally swap out the Ritchey CrossBite 1.5 tires for
Schwalbe Sammy Slick and changed the Profile Design Kage for a Tallac Duel
stainless steel bottle cage. I have not ridden any current Rivendell
offerings. Don't know that I have ridden any other Rivendell offering,
other than my Mountain.

I do have a Bridgestone 1991 MB-0(Zip), 1993 XO-1 and 1994 MB-1. I enjoy
riding my MB-1 and XO-1 when I pull them out.

I am a bit skeptical on the whole long wheelbase iteration that are the new
Rivs. That is mostly an issue of being used to a less long wheelbase.
Pretty sure they ride fine.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: Things I Feel Guilty About: Bike Life

2023-03-05 Thread R. Alexis
That is funny! There is some insistence early on to get the ones we are
close to involved with our cycling lifestyle. Fixed up a bike for a crazy
girlfriend way back when from a bike I bought used with a bent fork.
Replaced the fork. She may have rode it once or twice. I don't remember. We
broke up and she tried to take it along with other stuff some time after,
probably with the thought of selling it. I blocked that. Next girlfriend
rode it a couple times. I built her a different bike. She may have rode
that one a couple times. Brought home another bike for her and she never
got a chance to ride it. Last recent person I had a relationship with
stated she never learned to ride a bike because her brother would take and
destroy the bike she had when they were young. She also self proclaimed to
be pretty clumsy. I didn't want push the issue. Last I wanted was to have
her wipe out and get hurt. That relationship went by the wayside, so
nothing to worry about now. Was interacting with someone else and that
person mentioned she has knee issues that prevent riding a bike. I
mentioned e-bike to her.

Your kids will probably remember it as a positive adventure. You are better
aware now. Offer, but not push is the thing.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Brought Home A New Puppy!

2023-02-26 Thread R. Alexis
Got back from a very eventful trip to Chicago. While there was at the REI
in Lincoln Park browsing around. Was at the service area and chatting with
the guy behind the counter inquiring about cable donuts and saw a bin of
stuff with a couple frames. They were going to be recycled and the top tube
was sawed through. One of the frames was a burgundy Trek 800 sport in 16.5"
size, not my size. Was wanting a cable stop for a project. Guy let me take
the frame and fork to hack out what I needed.

The frame looked hardly used. Like it was bought, ridden here and there and
possibly ended up a REI for repair and abandoned. Don't know why they
wouldn't just donate it to one of the several community bike shops in
Chicago.

If anyone wants this for, whatever for free let me know. I have enough
projects without taking on another one.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

Re: [RBW] Lambda Add-ons

2023-01-30 Thread R. Alexis
I have two sets of Rivendell Grip King/Lamda pedals. Bought them on the
presale years ago. Got the Pedal Wings last week and mountedthem on both
sets of pedals. They fit just fine. have not ridden them yet. The Grip
Kings worked well for me on the Bontrager Race single speed I have them on.
That bike is my jump on and ride, no fuss bike. In the initial build this
bike had some Onza H.O. pedals, then swapped to some VP rat trap type BMX
pedals that I salvaged and swapped the 1/2" axles out for 9/16" ones from
some broken plastic/nylon pedals.

2023-01-23 Thread R. Alexis
Thanks for posting this pic. I didn't know that Rivendell had the Grip
Monarch/King pedal wings made and in stock. Been waiting for them to mount
on the Grip Kings I have. Went ahead and ordered the Silver 2 shifters and
mounts while I was at it. Should be here tomorrow.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Sam Build - Wish Me Luck!

2023-01-15 Thread R. Alexis
Congratulations How exciting when the planning and futzing over the
bike and parts finally come together. Any changes in parts and such while
thinking over the build? I know when I built the Rivendell Mountain I went
back and forth on several items. Thought of doing an 8 speed freewheel, but
it seemed much when accounting for the hub set up and scarcity of 8 speed
freewheels. Planned on doing a Nitto built Ritchey stem, but going with the
Softride suspension stem was a strong pull.

Take it slow, don't supper force anything. Take it easy with the hammer!
Lol!!!

Thanks,

I don't know that it counts, but I took a short post build roll on a Trek

[RBW] Re: Roller-Cam brakes

2022-12-29 Thread R. Alexis
Willet,

Nice bike. Pretty sure we have chatted before regarding Deluxe Bikes in
Lincoln, NE. That is where I got my MB-0(Zip). Got word of that frameset
from a shop manager I worked under. Was deciding on either a Trek something
or another, probably 930 complete or the Zip. The discount price offered me
on the Trek didn't pull me to get it. Decided to go for the Bridgestone.
Shop manager, who knew the guys at Deluxe was not happy. He had thoughts or
plans to get it and build up a dirt drop bar bike of some kind, I think. He
already had a Breezer Lightning he had nit pick built in an experiment to
get it as light as possible and had other nice bikes. Regarding the Odessey
U4 brake plate, Got one from Blues Bikes in Lincoln, Nebraska back in the
day when they were on 13th street, I think.

Looks like the cam on the front needs to go back in the rollers. Glad you
got your bike back.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

Those can be great brakes. You're fortunate that the posts are located

slightly different versions of those sun tour brakes, with one generally
being considered superior. I don't know enough to identify which yours is

but there's info out there. There are also U-brakes that look like giant
frame-mount center-pull caliper brakes, which use the same mounting
standard, but I don't know that they're an improvement at all. They're
bulky and have limited clearance. There are also super sought-after
 roller
cams made by WTB/Charlie Cunningham/DKG machine, but they'd be a couple
thousand dollars each IF you could even find them. The sun tours are a
licensed version of those, and are pretty neat for a runabout hobby bike.

[RBW] Re: Roller-Cam brakes

2022-12-29 Thread R. Alexis
Hey James,

Looks like you got one of those smoke chrome Schwinns. I have one. Got it
from a friend in trade for some bike work. Was her fathers. Don't know if
he was the original owner or just acquired it. I haven't gotten to work on
it with work and the many other bike projects. I do have some SunTour
Rollercam brakes mounted on the back of my 1994 Bridgestone MB-1 retro ride
with the use of an Odyssey U4 Brake Stiffener/Adapter plate. It allowed the
use of Rollercam/U-Brakes on cantilever equipped bikes. I used this set up
on my Bridgestone MB-0(Zip) when I initially built it from a frameset
before switching to WTB cantis. I always liked Rollercams and was thrilled
about the Odyssey plate. I had two sets of Rollercams, sold them for some
reason, then repurchased at least one set. Mine stop well. I had to add a
stiffener on the brake to help. Works better since I did that. I have a
second Odessey U4 plate. No plans as of yet to use it. Too many canti brake
options in my stash currently.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: Cockpit Quandaries - Friction bar ends for a new rider

2022-11-28 Thread R. Alexis
Paul,

Sorry to be late to the party.

That Specialized looks to be in decent condition. My thought was to lean
into replacing just what is needed. In this case I would go with replacing
the bars and shifters. The derailleurs that are on there probably will do
just fine. Getting some 7 speed thumb shifters like Shimano SL-TX30
Tourney Thumb Shifter Set - 7 Speed or SHIMANO TOURNEY SL-TZ500 THUMB
SHIFTERS as a set would work as a good replacement for the Rapid Fire
shifters. Even doing Grip Shifters with a macro adjust front will be more
intuitive.

Is there a reason to swap out the standard cantilever brakes for linear
pull ones? I would just as soon adjust then totally swap out.

I have a set of Shimano 7 speed GS or whatever shifters. Have several sets
I bought years ago from a local bike shop that closed. Modified a couple to
correct design flaw in the cable stop. Drilled and threaded one for barrel
adjusters and the other just used a stepped ferrule housing end.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: When the Rivs are sold out and you need a bike for daily commuting...

2022-11-21 Thread R. Alexis
The grips should come off fine. Just stick a slim, long flat screwdriver
under it, then spray some alcohol in under it to loosen it. Should slide
off fine. Can use the same solution or hairspray to slide on new bars.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

Hello folks. Looks like coroplast season is apron us. Anyone got any

Re: [RBW] Re: Rolling on the Rivendell Mountain

2022-08-29 Thread R. Alexis
Hey Gabriel,

The Softride suspension stem and the Thudbuster Uni-Pivot are comfortable.
When trying to decide what bike to use the Rivendell Mountain and my OX
Brand Ti cruiser were top of the list due to the comfort factor. I played
with the thought of riding the Gary Fisher Gemini tandem solo, but still
need to button up the build and figure out transporting it. I think it will
fit in my 2015 Jetta with the rear seat folded and the passenger front seat
pushed forward with the wheels removed and captain seatpost/stoker bars
removed and some finagling.

The 42 miler was the longest ride I have done this year, but have been out
quite a bit on the bike this year. The ride felt good. Have thought of
replacing the Thudbuster Uni-Pivot with a Cane Creek 3G Thudbuster ST or
eeSilk+, but not crazy about the all black post. Does not look like that
will change, although, the eeSilk suspension stem intro model comes in
silver. My post has a bit of a creek in use. Will address it with some dry
lube.

I would definitely be interested in meeting up for Rivendell/Bridgestone
ride. I am in Fremont, but work in Omaha and Lincoln is not out of the way
for me. Doing the Taco Ride over at the Wabash Trace in Council Bluffs, IA
just across from Omaha sounds good too.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: Rolling on the Rivendell Mountain

2022-08-24 Thread R. Alexis
Hi folks.

It is a Delta Cycles mirror. I have two in use. The other on the 1993
Bridgestone XO-1. Works well to get a glimpse of what is behind you. The
Rivendell Mountain was Rivendell's first offerings. There was the Road or
Road Standard, Allrounder and Mountain. You had several options. I had some
requests that were considered. One given the ok (Rollercam brake mounts)
and the other a no go (Breezer/KGB/hooded drop out) per Grant. The Mountain
was supposed to have its own proprietary lugset and crown. The crown was
supposed to be some special one, but it got nixed, probably due to low
demand for that model. They went with the same lugset as the Allrounder
with different tubing and vertical dropouts. Ordered mine in 1997 and got
it 1998 or so. Pretty sure I got it Christmas Eve 1998 when they were going
away from Waterford at that time. Was chasing the love for later Bridgstone
MB-1. Went with the Softride suspension stem and Thudbuster Uni-Pivot post
because I also had a thing for the Softride beam bikes of the time. Already
had a Nitto made Richey stem that was stashed along with other parts for
the build. Got the Thudbuster because it seemed fitting to go with the
Softride stem. Bottle cage is a Tallac Duel Stainless Steel cage with
storage bag/canister. Bought them new at a used shop in Chicago just north
of Lane Tech years ago. Cage and bag/container were on my Wilderness Trail
Bikes (WTB) Phoenix Ti, but moved it over when I swapped out cages on it.
Build is WTB and Suntour XC-Pro. Bars are Scott AT-3 with ODI Attack kryton
rubber bar wrap on the extentions and WTB modified Magura motorcycle grips.

Ordered with the thought of using WTB Dirt Drop bars in the future, if
desired.

Gabrial,

Nice set up on your Mountain. Nice Monkey Wrench Cycles stuff. I have known
the owners since before or early on. Nate has given an assist on a couple
bike projects of mine.

Jason,

I work just up the road from you at I-80 and Highway 50/144th street.

This rapid rise deraileur sounds and looks intriguing. I have a couple of
Shimano RD-C201 Mega-Range Rear Derailleur 8-Speed, Rapid Rise Silver. I
have wanted to try it, but don't have anything to do so on in my personal
use stable. My put it on some junk bike I have just for fun. Look forward
to what the final product will look like once done.

David,

Where are the cracks formed? My guess it is in the webbing between the
crank arm and the chainring mounting arm? Is it possible to file the crack
out to avoid it spreading?

[RBW] Re: 1996 Riv All Rounder update

2020-11-14 Thread R. Alexis
Difference between the the All-Rounder and Mountain is tubing, sloping top
tube, and vertical rear drop outs. The Mountain was supposed to come with
it's own proprietary lug set and some special fork crown, but I think in
the interest of cost savings at the time probably due to the lower number
of Mountains built in comparison to All-Rounders and Road Standards they
just used the same lug set as the All-Rounders. I was always interested to
see what the fork crown was going to look like. My hopes were that they
would do a version of the Ritchey Bi-plane fork crown. May be it is the
fork crown used on the Appaloosa. Rivendell that I know never showed any
copied of the initial Mountain lugset.

The early Rivendell bikes will have small differences between frames due to
the nature of the options available. I had exchanges with Grant about
building with KGB/Breezer drop outs and Rollercam mounts. He said no on the
Breezer style mounts due to the style not being out of style with the
nature of the frame build, but was ok with going with Rollercam mounts. I
eventually decided to stick with cantis.

I think the options were cable stops or shifter mounts on the downtuble,
extended headtube, contrasting cream painted headtube, braze on types and
numbers and possibly rear spacing.

Are you friction shifting the SRAM Rival rear der or are the shifters SRAM

[RBW] Re: Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2020-10-20 Thread R. Alexis
Steven,

Go for it!

I have built, rebuilt and trued up and redished many a wheel. Built my
first wheelset using Wilderness Trail Bikes Classic Grease Guard freewheel
hubs with Mavic 217, 26" rims for my 1991 Bridgestone MB-0(Zip) frameset. I
worked at a bike shop at the time so I had The Bicycle Wheel book,
Wheelsmith spoke calculator, Phil Wood spoke cutter, truing stand, dishing
took and wrenches available along with the shop manager, who was a well
accomplished wheel builder. I built the wheel at the shop when I had time.

Since that time I have built several wheels along with several rim and one
hub transplant. I am meticulous. I got my own Park truing stand, dishing
tool, ended up purchasing the Wheelsmith spoke calculator set and Phil Wood
spoke cutter, that I sold. Also bought The Bicycle Wheel book and read it
from cover to cover.

All the wheels that I have built seem to hold up. The rim transplant ones
have ended up on bikes I sold. They seem to be working well. The hub
transplant was a 36 hole SunTour Superbe Pro freewheel that replaced a
Suntour XC-Comp cassette hub on a Araya VX-400(?) . The dimensions on the
hubs were close and I spaced the freewheel hub to 132.5mm OLD to offer
versatility,

Currently I have one wheelset to build and two others I plan on replacing
the alloy nipples with brass. Will probably get around to that this fall or
winter.

Hope this helps.

The pedals I am currently using.

Suntour XC-Pro Grease Guard on most bikes.
Rivendell Grip King/MKS Lambda on Bontrager Race single speed.
SR MTP-129 on Bridgestone XO-1.
VP-196 with Zefal Half Clips on a couple bikes.
VP-707 with a VP-747 cage mounted around it on Bridgestone MB-1 retro ride.

[RBW] Re: Dirt droppish questions for smallish impulse buy

2020-06-22 Thread R. Alexis
Hello!,

I have ridden a couple dirt drops the original Wilderness Trail
Bike/Specialized/Nitto RM-3 Dirt Drop bar
https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/product/nitto-handlebar-rm3-dirt-drop-2758?page=2=977.

I have them on both my WTB Phoenix Steel and Ti along with my OX Brand Ti
Cruiser with two more bike on deck to get them. I got a Gary Fisher tandem
with a set of the bars that I plan on moving to my Heron Touring/Wayfarer
and plan on building up my Ibis Mojo with a set. The other is the Nitto
RM014
https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/product/nitto-handlebar-rm014f-dirt-drop-31-8mm-4117?page=3=977

that I have installed on my 1987 Schwinn Voyageur with a Velo-Orange Cigne
stem. I have a set of the Salsa Woodchipper in in 25.4 clamp new in
package.

I got both the Nitto RM 014 and Salsa Woodchipper before Nitto finally
decided to reintroduce the RM-3. I was enamored by the first dirt drop bike
I saw, a 1990 Trek 970 with WTB Shifter mounts owned by a bike shop manager
I later worked under. When I ordered my Rivendell Mountain I got it with
the thought of possibly using dirt drops in the future. I tried a standard
drop on a bike years ago that I acquired with a frameset years ago, and I
was not care for it. I have a variety of bars on bikes original Jones H-Bar
J bend, Scott AT-3 bar, Schwinn 411 handlebar/basket combo
https://bikerumor.com/2012/06/19/fun-new-bikes-from-schwinn/, Surly 1x1
Torsion bar and several flat bars with variety of bar ends and Moustache
bars.

The RM 014 is working well for me.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] FS. Rivendell Quickbeam and Bridgestone MB-1 (Not Mine)

2019-08-10 Thread R. Alexis
RBW List Members,

Friend, shop owner and Rivendell Bicycle dealer Sarah of Omaha Bicycle
Company www.omahabicycleco.com has a couple bikes she is selling.

First is a Rivendell Quickbeam complete. I believe the frame size is a
56cm. Has drop bars and I think a dingle set up with a fix cog on the rear
flip flop hub and Brooks saddle. Asking $1200 if I remember correctly.

Second is a 1987 Bridgestone MB-1 Xtracycle conversion. I think the frame
is a 20" with the drop bars intact.. Unsure of the price on this one.

Both bikes are used and came from a shop friend of hers that is pretty
BOBish/Rivvish. I bought a Heron touring from the shop last year still in
the process of being built by me from the shop. Both bike look to be in
excellent condition.

She also has a couple slightly used Lightspeed complete road bikes she is
trying to sell. Both owned by a very close relatives she sold them to that
need to sell due to one of them passing away.

If interested in any of them please contact Sarah at Omaha Bicycle Company
and mention I posted it. I get no kickback on these, just trying to help
her out and this venue is fitting for these bikes.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: Original Rivendell Mountain Bike

2019-04-04 Thread R. Alexis
I have a Rivendell Mountain also. It was supposed to have it's own
proprietary lug set. Looks like there was not enough interest in the
Mountain and more in the Road and Allrounder that going with it's own lug
set was not feasible, so they used the Allrounder lugs with stouter tubing,
sloping top tube and vertical dropouts along with different geometry.

My Rivendell Mountain is all silver built with a mix of SunTour XC-Pro and
Wilderness Trail Bike parts. It has Scott AT-3 bars with Softride
suspension stem and Thudbuster suspension seatpost. Went with the
suspension stem and post because I was into Softride Beam bikes. Sometimes
wish I would have splurged for the cream contrasting headtube. Got it
because I longed for an MB-1. Went with silver on short moment notice when
I was called about it. Rivendell must have been wrapping up production
there and needed the color solidified to finish things up. Will try to get
some picks of it and post.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: Rivendell tinkering..

2019-03-07 Thread R. Alexis
Craig,

Your Rivendell Allrounder looks great in all its versions. My Rivendell
Mountain is of the same era. It has stayed mostly the same build since I
initially built it.

I see you are running a SRAM X9 rear with what looks like friction dowtube
shifters. Do the shifters allows you to run through all the gears without
any special set up? I have thought of using SRAM 1:1 deraileurs with
standard pull shifters using some pull amplifier. Thought of using a Travel
Agent to do that.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: Quick removal of full-coverage fenders

2018-10-16 Thread R. Alexis
A number of years ago Bontrager (Trek) had a truly full coverage, quick
release fender. They only had it for about 3 years and discontinued it. I
worked for a Trek dealer at the time and it looked like a good product. It
seemed to work well. Don't know if the test of time determined they didn't
and that is why it was discontinued.

[RBW] Re: Frankendini

2018-10-16 Thread R. Alexis
Joe,

Frankendini 2 looks good. I meant to post when you had picks of the
original build with the original Softride stem. I think that one was the
warranty recall stem. I had gotten one, used and Softride warrantied it and
I got a gold aluminum Aheadset style one as a replacement. There was an
issue with the welded "Dog Bone" upper extension.

I really liked the Softride style suspension bikes. In the process of
building my Rivendell Mountain I went with a Softride suspension stem on it
and original Thudbuster Uni-Pivot seatpost instead of the Nitto built
Ritchey stem. That bike is my go to for comfortable riding. If Cane Creek
ever goes with a silver anodized post I may replace the Uni-Pivot with a
Thudbuster ST. I think the Thudbuster came along before I could really
think about a seatpost for this bike.

Looks like your bike is working well for you.

Re: [RBW] Recomendations For Cycling-Specific Vehicle

2018-09-28 Thread R. Alexis
The Honda Element seems to be a big go to for shop owners. A shop owner
friend has one. She had a company owned one at the prior shop she managed
and fell in love with it. Her prior car was a Subaru Outback. Another shop
owner friend has one also.

Twelve years ago when I was forced to look for a new vehicle the Honda
Element was one that was on the list. I backed off it because the fuel
economy was as good as I was wanting. It only seated 4 passengers instead
of 5. There were some occasions with my prior car a 1989 BMW 325i sedan
that I seated 5. Another issue was reports that the high profile made
driving in cross winds difficult. This brought on flashbacks of driving a
1976 GMC conversion van down the interstate. Not fun. I ended up getting a
2003 Volkswagen Jetta. It can fit my Rivendell Mountain with both wheels
off and both of the rear folding seats at least unlatched. Even my Karate
Monkey fits with both wheels off. I have fit four bikes in it with no other
passengers, but that was done carefully with the pedals an wheels removed.
I kept thinking about getting new Q Clips for my Yakima rack to mount it on
the Jetta, but the folding rear seats made that less pressing and I thought
having one on the car would affect the fuel economy and I was not crazy
about subjecting my bike to bug splatter on a roof rack.

I am currently looking at VW Golf 4 door. Test drove a TDI last week and
looked at a gas version, both 2015. Subaru Forester was another I looked
recently.

I feel I would have been happy with the Element had I gotten one because of
the great features and the ability to take the bike in the vehicle. I have
moved away some from the thoughts of using a roof rack to carrying it in
the vehicle or a hitch mount rear rack of some type. The Toyota
Matrix/Pontiac Vibe also seems like an excellent vehicle.

[RBW] Re: Would it be fun to have an all SILVER group?

2018-09-02 Thread R. Alexis
I have had thoughts of rebuilding my Rivendell Mountain with not
necessarily Rivendell Silver parts, but with Rivendell designed or special
parts like the Phil Wood Rivvy hubs, Rivendell Grip King/MKS Lambda pedals,
Silver thumb shifters. My bike is built with a mix of late generation
SunTour XC-Pro and Wilderness Trail Bikes (WTB) components. I have a hard
time replacing what is an excellent build for the sake of Rivendelling it
out. I like a lot of the Silver products, but not anymore than what I have.
I kind of kick myself for not getting a set of the Phil Wood Rivvy hubs for
down the line. I will Rivvy up the Heron Touring/Wayfarer as much as I can.

[RBW] Re: Weight weenie report. Dia Compe 980 brakes

2018-08-23 Thread R. Alexis
The new Dia-Compe 980 brakes look interesting. I have the original
Dia-Compe 980 brakes,
http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=D2AA4D24-29A3-4F50-B3CD-C789F21E144E=117=144

in use on my 1994 Bridgestone MB-1 retro build and on my 1987 Schwinn
Voyageur 27" to 700c conversion. Don't know why Dia-Compe didn't come up
with a different model# for these brakesh.

As for the 27" to 700c conversion, it may be a case by case issue on how
well it works. When I initially built this frameset up I used some hybrid
wheelset and Dia-Compe 984 brakes. The brakes didn't allow for the pads to
hit the rims squarely. I still rode it. When I sold the bike I mounted some
high profile Shimano Deore DX post style brakes. When I got the bike back
and revamped the build I mounted some 980 brakes. These work well in use.
The front have to be adjusted to the point that the brake arms angle
slightly downward. I have a Dia-Compe quick release roller straddle cable
carrier along with quick release TRP RRL brake levers help in getting the
brakes unhooked for wheel removal. With both quick releases it is possible
to get the brakes open enough so the wheel can clear without unhooking the
brakes from the straddle cable.

[RBW] Re: Suntour Power Thumb Shifters

2018-01-24 Thread R. Alexis
I have some SunTour XC friction shifters in use on my 1994 Bridgestone MB-1
retro build. They along with a bunch of other parts originally were on my
1986 Mongoose ATB that I ended up warrantying. The shifters were on the
replacement 1991 Mongoose IBOC Sport before I changed them out for index 7
speed SunTour XC-LTD thumb shifters.

I really like the shifting of the friction shifters again. I had no issues
when I got it built up and rode it. This is after having index shifting
rear bikes for a while. I since have gotten a second bike rebuilt using
some NOS SunTour Sprint downtube shifters. Had those shifters since before
Rivendell finally bought out the stock They are on my 1988 Schwinn Voyageur

Will more than likely end up with a set of the Silver 2 shifters, even
though I have some Suntour XC-Comp ones.

Peterson in early Rivendell Readers possibly and for sure Keith Bontrager
in his writings have exposed how some larger bike companies have used
lesser materials like high-ten steel tubing in headtube and bottom bracket
shells to save cost that ended up causing failures and issues which lead to
using oversized tubing to counteract these failures. Is it possible the
bent 1" steerer is the result of companies using not as strong tubing in
the steer tube and that current Rivendell forks a lot better, stronger
tubing in that application for that reason. I may be wrong on that issue.

As far as disc verse canti, I personally find it disapointing that there
are hardly any canti brake bikes outside of low end units and possibly and
odd ball here and there. The only bike I have with disc is a Gary Fisher
X-Caliber 29er with used Avid BB-5 brakes on 160mm rotors. They work ok,
not spectacular. I have gotten better braking out of cheap, low end linear
pull brakes, but that may be a product of the used brakes than anything
else. I have built new bikes up with disc brakes and didn't notice anything
spectacular on the test rides. I haven't spent a ton of time on disc brakes
either.

One of the issues now is that with the bicycle industry pushing disc brakes
more, this has caused less quality cantilever brakes to be made. Gone are
Avid Single Digit Ultimate and Cane Creek Direct Curve 5, formerly Onza
Pork Rib brakes. That along with standard canti brakes like the Avid
Tri-Align, Interloc 5-10, or Wilderness Trail Bikes Speedmaster. All but
one bike I have has standard cantilever brakes on them.

I is nice that Rivendell still offers standard cantilever brakes. It is my
preference. I don't see the need to move to disc brakes, but that does not
mean I won't at some point, but not anytime soon. For anyone that likes
cantilever brakes bikes, it would seen that now is as good a time as any to
pick up some older bike that has them like an Ibis Mojo steel, Moots, for a
reasonable amount with disc, through axle/Boost, 44mm headtube/taper
steerer bikes being all the rage now.

The thought of having Rivendell build a disc brake, 11/8" steerer bike
takes me back to when I ordered my Rivendell Mountain. I wanted to
substitute KGB/Breezer or Ritchey hooded drops in place of the forged drop
outs they were being built with along with Rollercam/U-Brake mounts. Pretty
much said No Go on the drop outs, but was more receptive to the Rollercam
mounts. In the end, I went with the standard cantilever brakes for future
replacement reasons. I have been happily riding that bike since with no
regret on not getting those specs.

[RBW] Re: Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-11-11 Thread R. Alexis
I have found plenty of stuff riding, walking and driving over the years.
While riding I have found various tools. Of note, a long, non rachet socket
wrench. Found a flip cell phone once on a walk during lunch. The battery
was dead. Finally charged it and called the best number on it to get it
back to the owner. The mother of the owner retrieved it from me a day
later. It was her son's phone and was not looking forward to paying to
replace it. Found a wallet outside a reception venue on another lunch walk.
Had cash, CC cards and the usual item, including a conceal and carry
license. Looked over the parking lot to see if there was a fire arm also in
the lot. Got a hold of the owner with the help of my girlfriend via the
insurance card. Got the card and wallet back to the owner the next or a
couple days later on my way to work.

I pass on stuff I cannot use or donate it. A cooler I found was passed on
to some friends to haul some meat back home on a car trip. I told them to
just pass it along or donate it to Goodwill.

Re: [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-29 Thread R. Alexis
As mentioned before, using Shimano Deore XT/DX thumb shifters on dirt drop
equipped WTB Phoenix and Suntour Command Shifters on the WTB Dirt Drop
equipped OX Brand Ti Cruiser 29er. I also have some early SRAM Grip Shift
rotational Road/Mountain shifters on my 1993 Bridgestone XO-1 on some Nitto
Mustache bars on the ends. They work well, don't stick out like regular bar
ends. Seems like it would work well on the ends of some dirt drops.

Forgot to mention, also using Paul shifter mounts with Shimano bar ends on
my Waterford 1400 on ti Jones H-Bar with J bends and some lower end Shimano
GS-200 (?) on a couple bikes that were modified by drilling and tapping to
take barrel adjusters. All work well.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for GPS computers?

2017-08-27 Thread R. Alexis
I personally don't use anything at the moment. I haven't even replaced the
dead battery in my Cateye wireless or got to the point of mounting on of
the Trek Time simple cycle computers on any of my bikes. A friend of mine
that I have been riding with lately uses her Apple iWatch along with her
Apple iPhone to track our rides using one of the features on it. The phone
will give a map, but the watch will give distance, time, elevation gain and
average speed. Gives some other readings also. It is nice that the info is
available, but not sitting on your handlebar as a distraction. I know there
are those on the list that are not crazy about a computer sitting on the
handlebar taking up space or being a distraction.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-27 Thread R. Alexis
I am using Suntour XC-Pro/Comp/LTD thumbies on several bikes. Using
friction Suntour XC thumb shifters on my 1994 Bridgestone MB-1 retro build
and Shimano Deore XT/DX thumb shifters on Wilderness Trail Bikes (WTB)
shifter mounts on a couple WTB Dirt Drop WTB Phoenix bikes. I like the
friction set up on the Bridgestone, but I started riding years ago with
friction and I haven't lost my ability to use fricton in the years since I
went away from it. Now have my Schwinn Voyageur set up with NOS Suntour
Sprint index shifters on the down tube. Despite not extensively using a
bike with downtube shifters, especially friction I am taking to it just
fine.

The shape of the microShift made thumb shifters reminds me of the
index/ghost index/friction Suntour shifters back in the 90's. I prefer that
shape over the Shimano thumbies for that personal reason.

What index shifters are on your wife's bike now? SRAM? Shimano? Other? I
would probably go with one of the thumb shifters that indexes and can
convert to friction. If she has never done friction it may be much to go to
that for her. I know I have worked on a couple of bikes with Shimano
rotational shifters that didn't work well despite my going over the bike.
They are bad shifters. Entry level SRAM has worked well, when set up
correctly for me.

Hope this help.

[RBW] Re: WTB - Riv Fork; 26" wheel canti

2017-04-17 Thread R. Alexis
Another option in line with what has already been mentioned, Find a
suspension fork crown that works for you and allows legs to be bolted to it
and have a builder make a legs that will fit it. It does not have to be the
Bontrager/Rock Shox one. It can be a later Rock Shox one with just the bolt
on fork legs, as long as the steerer is the size that works. RST used to
offer separate fork crown for their fork shox. Other than that later Rock
Shox and Manitou forks that bolted to the legs will work.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: WTB - Riv Fork; 26" wheel canti

2017-04-17 Thread R. Alexis
Sorry, lost the text and hit send too soon.

The Bob Brown Cycles fork crown can be built both for 1" and 11/8" via shim
per his description here, http://bobbrowncycles.com/sale.htm , and has good
clearance.

I don't know if Handsome Cycles or Rawlands still has any forks. My guess
is that Handsome may have some, but that Rawlands probably does not since
they have moved and has not produced the Sogn in a while.

Another possibly viable option is to check with Rivendell to see what forks
they have available that they are willing to sell you.

Hope this helps.

[RBW] Re: WTB - Riv Fork; 26" wheel canti

2017-04-17 Thread R. Alexis
I recall someone on the RBW or iBOB list posting about getting a
replacement fork for a 1993 Bridgestone XO-1 from Handsome Cycles by buying
one that was used on the XOXO. One of the issues was there is a reverse
peak or point that projected down in the middle of the fork crown toward
the tire that caused some clearance issues. Don't know how big a tire they
were using.

Another option is that Bob Brown Cycles sells his version of the biplane
fork crown http://bobbrowncycles.com/images/temp_sale/crown9.jpg,
http://bobbrowncycles.com/images/temp_sale/crown8.jpg,

I just contacted him about building me a rigid for for my early 90's
Waterford 1400 mountain because I thought the design and style seemed like
a better match to the lugs on that bike than the Pacenti fork crown. I did
consider trying to get a Rawlands cSogn fork with the Pacenti fork crown
and having the canti braze-on moved to accommodate 26" mountain wheel. My
concern was the axle to crown distance, but I never looked and compared
what the distance was between what the early suspension corrected length
should be on a fork for the Waterford frame and what the 27.5"/650B crown
length of the Rawlands CSogn would be. I think the length would be pretty
comparible.

Bob told me it would be about a 6 month wait. Also said he could sell his
fork crown to me to have a local builder make me a fork if I wanted. The
crown can be build for both 11

[RBW] Re: Rivendell ThumbShifters?

2017-03-27 Thread R. Alexis
It was mentioned on this list, but I don't think I ever ran across an
e-mail or posting that the project was not going through or had changed.
May have come in an e-mail and went to my junk folder and I never saw it. I
definitely was interested in getting a couple. Had given the Silver on Soma
(S.O.S.) shifters some thought. I have some Suntour XC friction shifters
back in use on my 1994 Bridgestone MB-1 retro build. I don't know if it is
because it shifting across only 5 gears in back or what, but it didn't make
me think I was missing anything not having index. I have a set of the
original Suntour downtube shifters that I got way back when mounted on my
Schwinn Voyageur. Awaiting a new stem so I can get that bike up and running
again. That one will shift over 7 speeds. Look forward to getting some
riding on that once the revisions are done.

What was Plan B for the thumb shifter project? Making the cable barrel
bigger to be more compatible with SRAM derailleurs? I have Shimano Deore DX
and XT in use on a couple bikes with Wilderness Trail Bikes shifter mounts
along with Suntour XC-Pro/Comp/LTD index on several bikes. Still would get
a couple sets of these to use.
