Re: [RBW] Brake cables and housing

2024-02-04 Thread 'Sean, PNW' via RBW Owners Bunch
In an effort to reduce waste and increase reusability, I've been
transitioning the bikes in my stable to aluminum fish bone link housing

which can be used again again by simply replacing the cable and liner
.

It was suggested in this iBob thread
,
and while not a panacea, is handy for those of us who often reconfigure
bikes/cockpits/etc.

[RBW] Re: son hub sales anywhere?

2023-11-27 Thread 'Sean, PNW' via RBW Owners Bunch
I haven't checked in a year or so, but the last few SON hubs I purchased
were all from European mail order sites (SJS/Bike24/Condor/Berthoud/etc)
and were significantly cheaper as a result of favorable exchange rates and
no VAT, despite the shipping cost.

Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto 32F Rack weight limit?

2023-02-13 Thread 'Sean, PNW' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've a Rene Herse UD-1 rack listed if anyone searching for an adjustable
and lightweight rack with a 10 kg (22 lb) weight rating is interested.

It’s very nicely built and high quality w/adjustable struts that can fit
the same mounts as a 32f.

this has been discussed many times before. in this age of litigation,
nitto has always been conservative with their weight ratings, but we're
 all
adults and have to make our own decisions. that said, and keep in mind
this comes from someone thats been running a nitto mini front for over 10
years with a basket, you can get away with more weight. now even i would
say, if your plan is to bring back 15-20 lbs of whatever often, then thats
not a good idea (imo), but for occasional heavy loads, its fine.

my bigger issue with this combo is i think the smaller racks are not
wide enough of a platform for stability to secure a basket. i recently
switched to a nitto/simworks obento rack and its been a little more
 stable.

you don't mention what bike you are planning for this, but if its a
rivendell, most of them do not steer well with a heavy front load, which
 is
another reason to keep it light.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Wiring inside the Fork and Frame?

The 22AWG wire offered by Velo Lumino, currently out of stock, is the best
solution I've found for threading dynamo wiring through tight spaces such
as fork legs:

[RBW] Re: moisture in dynamo light - am i screwed?

2022-09-14 Thread 'Sean, PNW' via RBW Owners Bunch
In addition to mounting it properly, I would remove and submerge it in some
silica gel/rice/etc to try and draw out as much moisture as possible.

To my mind, continuing to use it w/internal moisture increases the odds of
a short and/or more significant damage.

Re: [RBW] Re: Touring Front, Neo-Retro Back?

2021-12-29 Thread 'Sean, PNW' via RBW Owners Bunch
The line of logic, as I understand it, is according to Paul, the
'Neo-Retro' brakes are more powerful, yet pose heel clearance issues when
used in the rear, so are most often relegated to the front where the bulk
of stopping power is needed while their 'Touring' cantis fit better in the
rear.

However, in my experience, Paul 'Touring' cantis have typically been more
powerful than 'Neo-Retros', as addressed here:

*"So I would guess that the narrow-stance Touring Canti, if set up with a
low straddle cable as described by Sheldon Brown...would actually be more
powerful than the wide-stance Neo-Retro – the opposite of what the Paul
site says." *- Lennard Zinn /
https://www.velonews.com/gear/technical-faq-with-lennard-zinn-a-detailed-look-at-brake-shudder/

Regardless of the model, cantis of all flavors benefit heavily from proper
set up:

[RBW] Re: Anyone heard the Silver rear hubs?

2021-11-29 Thread 'Sean, PNW' via RBW Owners Bunch
It's not so hard to strip a black T610 hub to the bare shell, remove the
anodizing w/Easy Off HD oven cleaner, wet sand it with 400>800>1500 grit
paper, polish it with some Simichrome on a buffing wheel, before rebuilding
it with fresh grease.

*The one important tip is to really tighten the 10mm allen bolt holding the
freehub body to the hub once the wheel is fully built, using the laced rim
for the leverage needed to apply the requisite force.*

The whole process took maybe an hour on the T610 hub I used for a dynamo
commuter wheelset I built about 2 years ago; their low price point, near
silent freehub, durable construction, and rebuildable design make them hard
to beat for said application.

construction. Aesthetics definitely floated around in my bucket without

I ended up with a Suzue Classico cassette hub. Yeah it's noisier than a

 good. Suzue Classico

Re: [RBW] Of Bikes and Bread

2020-03-22 Thread Sean PNW
As a huge fan of both sourdough and stand up comedy I've been loving Tom
Papa’s recent Youtube videos of how to bake bread.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzOidAJzuiZ8GnVxie-C-sw/videos

They’re fun, accessible, and a really helpful, easy way to learn how to
make your own bread at home.

In addition to being a passionate and accomplished sourdough baker, he's a
great comedian, is the head writer on, and contributes the ‘Out in America’
segment of, NPR’s ‘Live From Here’, and his new Netflix special ‘You're
Doing Great!’ is excellent.

https://www.livefromhere.org/people/tom-papa

https://www.netflix.com/title/81103777

I highly recommend any and all of the above as so many of us are stuck at
home and looking for something to distract, educate, or entertain.

Re: [RBW] Re: What're the best cantilever brakes out there?

2019-04-20 Thread Sean PNW
I run Tektro 720s on my lock up/commuter/porteur and they work just fine
with salmon pads, clearing inflated RTPs with ease.

I've Pauls on another nicer bike and prefer them over the Tektro 720s,
they're the best cantis I've used.

However, so long as they're decent brakes, i.e. any of the mentioned
flavors: Pauls/720s/CX70s/CX50s/Older XTs/RH/IRD/VO/etc, my experience has
been that proper set up generally trumps the nuanced strengths and
weaknesses inherent in each particular model.

I'd recommend referencing this when you set up which ever cantis you land
upon, it's a pretty comprehensive overview of the little tricks which add
up to make a big difference:

[RBW] FS: Brooks B67 & B67s Saddles (cross post from iBob)

2019-03-21 Thread Sean PNW
I picked these up for a tandem project I'm slowly piecing together; old
steel Nashbar frame, BMC fork, Albatross bars, 700x43 RnRs, Pauls, alloy
fenders, racks, Schmidt dynamo, etc.

The hope is it will allow my girlfriend and I to avoid taking the car on
shorter 1-3 mile in town and evening trips, going out for dinner, grabbing
a few groceries, etc. While she has a bike, a beautiful mixte I put
together for her, her experience and confidence in traffic, at night, etc
aren't quite there yet, so the idea is the tandem will alleviate a bit of
that anxiety and help shed our/her reliance on the car for brief jaunts.
With that objective in mind, and in consideration of the fact that we live
in the PNW, I decided to go with all weather Brooks Cambium B17 & B17s
instead of these so that we can lock the bike up out in the elements
without worrying about the saddles getting wet or damaged.

Both show some nicks and wear but are in very good shape with decades of
life left; the B67s has a shallow scratch along it's top that looks worse
than it is.

Brooks B67 pics -
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/18D2D_ZFKZ0VzNrxAfywAzLhey8Ms6EdU?usp=sharing

Brooks B67s pics, wider 'female' version -
https://drive.google.com/open?id=17f2AznYjaYvz-gontk7cR3wwXRY27_Pp

My preference is to sell them as a set for $140 + shipping, if I don't get
any takers as a pair, I'll let them go individually for $80/ea + shipping

PM me with any questions, thanks.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for brake shoes?

2018-12-08 Thread Sean PNW
Kool Stop Thinline Salmons for my bikes.

Mike Varley of Black Mountain made a pretty good case for their use within
this handy blog post from several years ago, 'Get the most out of your
canti brake…':

*Pad thickness: Thick vs. thin*

*Thick pads are squishy. When you apply the brakes on a bike with thick
pads by squeezing the lever, the pad hits the rim and as you squeeze, you
might feel mush. Part of that is the pad compressing. To solve this
issue, thin brake pads are immensely helpful. The KoolStop Thinline pad
works great. Very little flex/compression going on at the brake pad if you
are running Thinline pads. Probably the main reason Paul Components
supplies their brakes with these pads. But the thin pads will wear out
faster. So what. This simply means that the brake adjustment – the pad to
rim contact – will be optimal longer. You’re not going to have the pads
wearing at an angle as you would with thick pads and the chances of the pad
diving under the rim are greatly reduced. *

Compressionless housing makes a noticeable difference in braking
performance and 'feel', it seems pretty reasonable to expect the same
principal should apply to brake pads as well

The world is a far less scary a place than we're led to believe...

Steven, I think ten is a fine age to begin introducing a child to the safe
and proper use, care, and respect of tools such as a hatchet, pocket knife,
etc.

By virtue of the fact that you're concerned enough to seek out the advice
of others in order to avoid making a mistake or potentially jeopardizing
the safety of your child further solidifies the impression you're exactly
the type of parent consciousness and engaged enough to ensure your boy is
properly taught not only how to safely use potentially dangerous tools, but
is also endowed with the respect and value for such tools and the work they
enable; lessons which will serve him well for the entirety of his lifetime.

I hope the both of you have a joyous and peaceful holidays, I would've been
over the moon to have received a hatchet or pocket knife for Xmas when I
was ten; oh the potential forts, rope swings, experiences such tools enable
at that age

[RBW] FS - Parts Purge

2018-02-20 Thread Sean PNW
Slowly sorting through my parts stash to clear out some space and finance
other projects I've tried to describe and picture every part as
accurately as possible, if you've a question, need clarification, or find a
discrepancy, please let me know.

Prices do not include shipping & are net to me; I prefer paypal f or
include 4% to cover fees. If you think my pricing is out of line, feel free
to make an offer.

I ship via USPS flat rate whenever possible, otherwise via bikeflights.com,
and get parts in the mail within 36 hours of receipt of payment. Please
PM me if you're interested in anything, thanks!
