[RBW] FS - Simworks Potluck, Wald 137 basket, Swift Sugarload, Tunitas Caryall

2018-12-29 Thread Stephen D
Selling as a package for $230 + shipping. Shipping should be around $15-35
depending on distance from Seattle.

Simworks Potluck Rack: Includes a variety of Nitto mounting struts that
I've collected over the years. Has a few places where the black coating has
worn off, mostly where the Wald 137 basket contacted it when used.

Wald 137 basket with one of those bungee nets Riv used to sell.

Swift Horizon Line Sugarloaf basket bag: in great shape.

Tunitas Caryall Basket Pack (Seaglass): Over all in very good shape, but
there is a small rip, as shown in the pictures, that does not affect
functionality.

Thanks,
Stephen

[RBW] Re: FS: 60 Quickbeam and 52tt/50.5st Crust Romanceur

2018-02-11 Thread Stephen D
Thanks Philip,

You're absolutely right - the front brake is an Avid Shorty 4, and the tape
is Brooks bar tape.

When I want back to look at my original description, I realized I omitted
an important point -- there is a faint dent in the top tube. We bought the
bike last year, and here is the prior seller's description of the bike, and
his characterization of the dent:

http://vi.vipr.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemDescV4=391772091525=0=10=177831=bicycleservices=1=1=0=false=ebay.com=1=1=1=0

We felt that the seller's description of the dent was accurate. It is tough
to see the dent, but you can feel it. I'll take a video tomorrow and post
it in the Flickr album pointing out where the dent is with a pen.

Also, I have one other update - I'm afraid the bike does not come with a
dingle cog after all. We went to get the dingle and realized we only had
the lockring for it.

Sorry for the confusion!

[RBW] Re: FS 48 Sam Hillborne f/f/bb/hs - $425

2018-02-11 Thread Stephen D
Forgot to mention - frame is in Baltimore and price is for local pickup.

Shipping and professional packing of the frame are extra. I would
guesstimate about $75 extra to west coast, but we will verify before you
pay.

If you do a bike build, shipping and professional packing probably add
about $125-150, but we will verify before you pay.

[RBW] FS 48 Sam Hillborne f/f/bb/hs - $425

2018-02-11 Thread Stephen D
For Sale - 2013ish 48 Sam Hillborne f/f/bb/hs.

I purchased in 2013 and have used this as my primary bike since that time.
I am preparing to move across the country and am culling through my bike
gear. I was going to keep the Sam and sell my Crust Romanceur, but have not
received any interest in the Romanceur. and so am parting out the Sam and
keeping the Crust.

*The Good*
1. No dents
2. No usability problems - I was going to keep it over a brand new Crust
Romanceur. I feel good about it long term.

*The bad*
1. Tons of paint chips and scuffs. I locked the bike to anything, and it
shows.
2. The shifter cable braze-ons on the downtube are dinged up, but work
fine. I used a prototype pass and stow fork mount, which was great, but it
hit the braze-ons whenever the fork was turned 90 degrees.
3. The fender mount on the chainstay bridge (where the kickstand is
attached) is stripped. I enlarged the whole slightly so the fender mounting
bolt goes through the bridge and then I use a nut. This works fine, I have
installed Berthound and SKS fenders this way and used them without issue,
but it is a sad artifact of a careless moment.

I'll be putting up many items form my parts bin soon, so if you want to
talk through a complete build package, feel free to contact me. I sell my
parts at ~50% of retail unless there is something unusual about the
condition, and I think a complete Sam would cost about $900-1000 (including
the frame) with the parts I have (and would include Rich-built wheels with
a Shimano dyno).

[RBW] Re: FS: 60 Quickbeam and 52tt/50.5st Crust Romanceur

2018-01-21 Thread Stephen D
Daniel,

Saddle height is 68.5 in the photos.

One thing to be aware of given the concerns folks have raised about the
stem height -- the headtube is very short on this size frame, and if you
want to really lower the handlebar height, a short quill stem will be
necessary, which runs about $50 (
https://www.benscycle.com/nitto-technomic-short-quill-stem-2/stem_nitto_technomic_870/product).

If it starts to look like this bike might be something that your wife might
be interested in, we can discuss cockpit changes/deletions/price
adjustments to make sure the setup allows for a range of fit adjustments
that would work for your wife.

Thanks for your interest. Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Stephen

[RBW] Re: FS: 60 Quickbeam and 52tt/50.5st Crust Romanceur

2018-01-20 Thread Stephen D
I was the rider. I usually ride a 48 Sam.

I agree, rando-style bikes look best with a slammed seat post. I never
thought the seat post looked odd on this bike, but you're right, it doesn't
look as good as the Quickbeam, which my much-taller-than-me wife rode.

As for the amount of exposed stem. so true! I love my Sam best with
albatross bars, and second best with On One Midge bars on a dirt drop stem.
I put rando bars on the Romanceur and then immediately tried to get back
upright like I am on my Sam! :)

If someone is interested in the Romanceur but is concerned about the
cockpit, don't hesitate to let me know and we'll see if we can tweak it a
bit to get something that would be better for you out of the gate. I have
spare mustache and albastache bars and a few stems in varying lengths that
we can swap out if you want.

Thanks,
Stephen

[RBW] FS: 60 Quickbeam and 52tt/50.5st Crust Romanceur

2018-01-20 Thread Stephen D
Continuing the parts / bikes purge in preparation for a move... This round
-- two of our bikes.

Prices are local pickup in Baltimore. I live by a park, so it's easy to
take them for a test spin.

If shipped, packing by a local bike shop ($50) and bike flights shipping
charge will be extra. We'll verify the total before it's done, but the
total of packing + shipping will probably be about $150 if going to west
coast.

*Quickbeam* (60) - $1400. Bought last year on this forum. Wife used
primarily as a commuter bike during that time. Wheelset rebuilt during that
year by Cutlass wheels. HED Belgium+ rims with the Phil Wood hubs that came
with the bike's older wheelset. Barlow pass tires. Tektro Canti up front,
Paul Canti in the rear. Sugino Super Mighty 170 crank with Sugino Mighty
Competition 45t chainring. Campy Record headset, White freewheel, Nitto
Noodle bars with Nitto Pearl 8 stem. Nitto S65 seat post with Brooks B17 in
excellent shape (wife is keeping her broken in saddle, so we put a spare
B17 that is not broken in yet on the bike for the sale). Includes an
uninstalled Surly Dingle.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/stephendm/albums/72157664882872958

*Crust Romanceur *(52 Top Tube / 50.5 Seat Tube) - $2200. Built this
summer. Ridden less than 50 miles. Has a reused anodized White ENO 175
crankset, added new VBC chainrings, Spank Spike pedals. IRD 9spd wide range
cassette. NOS Dura Ace downtube shifters with Shimano derailleurs. 650b
Wheelset with SONDelux / White CLD hubs with Velocity Blunt 35 rims and
tubeless Switchback Hill tires. Paul Klampers (short pull), Nitto Rando
Bar. Paul Rear Skewer. Also comes with new, unopened Honjo H80 fender set
with stays from Bens Cycle (
https://www.benscycle.com/honjo-h80-full-coverage-fender-set---650b---aluminum---smooth/full_coverage_fender_honjo__707-272/product).

Never finished the build, so fenders are uninstalled, and no lights are
wiring for the dyne hub.

2018-01-14 Thread Stephen D
All,

I've gathered another round of items to sell. Nitto racks come with the
mounting hardware shown, so if you need longer or more angled struts, I'm
afraid you'll have to purchase those.

The bags are in excellent shape. The racks may have some dirt and / or tape
residue from where I occasionally used helicopter tape to run wiring, etc.
Happy to take more detailed pictures if you want to see anything up close.

All prices include shipping

Nitto 27F 700c front rack with removable pannier supports - $150

Nitto 700c rear rack with removable pannier supports - $150

Nitto Campee rear 32R Medium - $120

Nitto ZAO Front Bag Decaleur (fits technomic stems)- $90

Nitto M12 Front Rack - $70

Nitto Quick Release Saddlebag Support $70

Swift Mini Roll Top (pair) w/ Arkel Hardware (like new) - $195

Mission Workshop Vandal - $175

Velo Transit Retro 20 Rear Waterproof Pannier (single) - $80

Berthoud GB28 Large Handlebar Bag (black) (has holes where Decaleur was
mounted) - $125

Acorn Boxy Rando Bag - $110

[RBW] FS 58 Simple One F/F/HS/BB $550 + shipping

2017-12-30 Thread Stephen D
I'm selling a 58 Simple One which I bought off this list in June for my
wife to build up, but never did the build. We're getting ready for a move
and are paring down our bikes, parts, and frames.

The frame has no dents or damage to the metal, but it does have a lot of
chips and dings in the paint. The bottom bracket is smooth, but the headset
feels a little different than the headsets we've had on bikes we've built
up - there's a definite forward "position" that the headset clicks into --
it isn't just an uninterrupted 360 degree turn like it is on other
headsets. Bottom line -- it is possible the headset may need to be serviced
or replaced, but I don't have the expertise to say definitively. It might
be ok.

The frame is located in Baltimore. The price does not include shipping from
Baltimore, which generally runs about $50 to ship to the west coast via
Bike Flights. We'll verify the precise cost of shipping before adding the
amount, however.

2017-12-16 Thread Stephen D
Yup, my wife has an 86 pbh and a saddle height of 75.

I've added some additional pictures to the Flickr album of the dent in
profile. It does not photograph well, but you can feel it, see it looking
directly at it because of the light reflection, and sort of see it in
profile.

I checked with local bike shop, and packing a frame is only $30. Shipping
insured for $500 from east coast to west coast is about $50 on bike flights.

[RBW] Re: FS: Hunqapillar 48cm (76-83 PBH)

2017-07-01 Thread Stephen D
I had a quick question about your Hunq for sale. I saw you were running
650b wheels on it for awhile. Were you just running 42mm tires? Or did you
ever put anything larger on it when it had the 650b wheels? Did you run
650b wheels with the motolites you have on it now? If so, how did you like
that, and what made you decide to go to a 26" wheelset?

Thanks,
Stephen

2017-06-18 Thread Stephen D
ILE Porteur Bag and Sackville Medium Saddlesack are sold.

I have added many more pictures of the Cheviot to the dropbox folder. Let
me know if there any other closeup pictures that you would like to see.

Finally, the Cheviot is $25 less if you are local to the DC / Baltimore
area and shipping / packaging isn't necessary ($475 for f/f/hs/bb, $600 for
f/f/hs/bb + mark's rack and plat rack).

[RBW] Re: WTB/ISO/Source for 650b dynamo wheelset

2017-06-09 Thread Stephen D
If you're interested, I've got a set of polished velocity Atlas rims (32h)
with a Shimano Deore XT rear hub (135mm) and a SONdelux front hub built by
Rich / bought through Riv. Used on a Cheviut for awhile, probably less than
200 miles on the rear (it was swapped out for a wheel with a White Ind
eccentric hub) and less than 500 on the front.

32h instead of 36h, and a different dynohub than you are looking for, but
if you think this might be something that would work for you, let me know
and we can talk further. I was just in the process of putting together a
list of items to sell, and I was thinking $400 plus shipping for this
wheelset.

Best,
Stephen

[RBW] 48 Sam - Convert to 26"?

2017-05-16 Thread Stephen D
I've got a 48 Sam and am considering having cantilever bosses brazed on to
run 26" wheels. I see lots of conversions from 700c to 650b, etc., and I
can't think of why this conversion would be problematic, but wanted to
check to see if anyone with Rivendell-specific experience/knowledge had any
thoughts about potential pitfalls before I call up the shop and start
moving forward on it.

My issue is that I am currently running 50cm Berthoud fenders and Hetres -
to get the clearance for this combo, I have to use Paul Racers. Because my
frame is so small, it's very difficult to get the rear cable hanger for the
center pull brakes to guide the brake cable at a nice angle to the center
pulls. I had a Nitto hanger, but because I couldn't get the angle quite
right, it bent the hanger after a few months of use.

I am thinking that if I go to cantilever bosses, I can run v-brakes and not
have the cable hanger problem. And if I have the bosses brazed on for 26"
wheels, I can use Paul Motolights to either continue to use my 650b wheel
set or use 26" wheels and get better clearance between my fenders and
tires.

Anyone have experience? Any 48 Sam owners out there have thoughts about
running Paul Racers? I just bought a Paul Funky Monkey but as I tinker with
it I'm just not seeing the clean angle I'd like to.

Thanks for your help,
Stephen

[RBW] FS 56cm Sam Hillborne Complete Build

Selling a complete Sam build - $1,500.

Pictures are here:

I'm located in Baltimore. I can really only do local pickup, as I a) don't
have a car and b) am hesitant to ship a used bike that is this expensive --
I'd rather the buyer have a chance to look over it and make sure they are

My wife and I recently moved from Savannah to Baltimore and are just not
riding our bikes the way we used to. We are selling her 56 cm Sam, which we
rebuilt about 2 months before moving and which has just not been used since
we moved.

The Sam was bought in ~2013 (I believe -- it was when Rivendell was selling
the discounted Sam frames because the headtube was erroneously painted blue
instead of cream). We ordered it with the basic drop bar Sam build, which
is what the drive train still is. Here are a few of the upgrades / details.

The condition of the bike is very good. I can't find any paint chips or
anything on it. Let me know if you want any close up pictures of anything
and I'll add more pics to the flickr album.

Thanks again, your post answered some of the questions I had after the

[RBW] Re: Car Racks Rivs

2015-06-18 Thread Stephen D
Great question - we've had the same question for quite some time and just
haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet.

Jinxed's response got me curious about 1Up with fenders -- I found this:
http://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/902008-1up-usa-rack-fender-cushions-question.html
.

I've often wondered about Yakima and Thule hitch racks that have trays but
use a clamp on the top tube instead of the tires, likes this:
http://www.yakima.com/shop/bike/hitch/twotimer or
http://www.thule.com/en-us/us/products/carriers-and-racks/bike-carriers/hitch-mounted-bike-carriers/thule-doubletrack-2-bike-990xt-_-5776509
.

Good luck and keep us posted!

[RBW] Re: AHH Brake Ideas

2015-06-05 Thread Stephen D
I put Paul Racers on a newer Hillborne with 650b wheels and was able to to fit
Berthoud 50mm fenders and Hetres. My clearance is tight, but I went with the
Paul Racers because I couldn't even fit the fenders with the Silver sidepulls I
had on the bike.

Anyhow, just a Hillborne is not a Hilsen, but I wanted to share that the switch
to Paul Racers from Silver sidepulls gave me more room.

[RBW] Sunrace One-At-A-Time Shifter on Quill Stem

2015-06-05 Thread Stephen D
This might have been totally obvious to others, but it wasn't to my wife
and I until just last night, so I wanted to share it with others just in
case it's useful. The Sunrace One-At-A-Time shifters Riv sells for $35 or
so each work great mounted on the stem. We spent a lot more money using
the IRD quill stem adapter with Silver shifters to get roughly the same
effect on my wife's Hillborne.
