Also, from my experience, it's not possible to totally re-proof the
carradice capes. Even if you could, it's a big pain to proof them.

Re: [RBW] Re: PONCHOS!!!

2023-03-09 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
I'd suggest you try to find a used Grundens poncho that riv used to sell.
They're way bigger than other models, super durable, don't have an
unnecessary hood. I've tried other brands, but the riv version can't be
beat.

It's really to bad they aren't available anymore. James from Riv said he'd
see if there are any extras hidden away, but I haven't heard back. I assume
not. I do worry that I'll never be able to replace mine if something
happens to it though!

Considering a 1x set up on my Appaloosa prototype. I’m wondering if I’ll

chainstays. Should be a 38 chainring with 11-42 cassette. Anyone have
experience setting up something similar?

Thanks,

[RBW] Wald Bag

2020-04-06 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
They're great. I have both sizes. The medium is perfect for commuting. The
large is great if you need to snag something extra at the store. They hold up
to rain pretty well, especially if they aren't packed full and you can fold the
zipper over. Not fully waterproof in sustained hard rain. Very convenient for
everyday, around town use. Most the time I just plop in the bag without
bungies. I haven't tried other basket bags, I don't have much to compare to,
but I haven't felt much need for anything else.

Cheers

[RBW] FS Sackville Shopsack Clembasack

2020-02-26 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Hey!

I've got a like-new Sackville Shopsack Clembasack in olive green. Designed for
the taller Clem baskets, but fits well in the Wald 137 too. It's like an
extra-medium Shopsack. I've already got a medium and a large, so I haven't used
it.

How does $55 shipped sound?

Cheers!

[RBW] FS: Nitto Bullmoose Handlebars Quill Stem

2020-02-18 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Got some Nitto Bullmoose bars for sale. They'd be a pain to ship, but I'd do it
if you're willing to pay. These do show some wear, but I'm guessing some metal
polish would solve that. Take a look at the pictures, I tried to capture the
condition accurately.

Check on the deets on my CL post:

I've done centuries and multi-day tours with the black sheep bars I had that

[RBW] Antelope Hills/Black Mountain Monster Cross

2018-06-08 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Howdy-

Got the Compass Antelope Hills today and tried them on the Black Mountain
Cycles Monstercross. Here are set clearance pictures:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/F6d8HBxYMU3lRfNw1

I'm the pictures they are mounted on velocity dyads(18.6mm interal width) with
tubes at 55 psi. I don't have calipers, but I'd guess they're around 51-52ish
right now.

Not much room, so I'll probably end up using these ony Riv proto-Appaloosa.

Let me know if you have any questions!

[RBW] Billie Bar Width - New Albatross

2018-03-20 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
News flash: The new Billie bars will be 58cm wide! I emailed Riv to ask and

If you haven't heard of them yet, they are a longer sweep, less rise and wider
albatross. I kind of think this is a picture of them that they quietly snuck on
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bf5JwDeAFkR/ anyone know for sure?

I'm stoked and I know there are others who've been wanting a wide albatross

[RBW] MKS RMX Service/Rebuild

Hey howdy-

My MKS RMX (sneaker) pedals have developed a clicking sound on one side.
They still spin well, but it makes me worry how long they'll last. Plus,
the sound is annoying. Anyone had luck servicing the sneaker pedal?

Thanks,

Portland, O

ps. I did test my bike with different pedals to make sure the sound wasn't
coming from the bottom bracket.

[RBW] Up Your Vis Game

Good thinking! Nighttime visibility is extra important in rainy Portland
because everyone's windshield is fogged up.

I got a $12 light (USB rechargable!) for my hub that allows people to see me

my first season trying it, so we'll see how long it lasts. So far so good
though.

Hi,

I recently got a XL Aussie Wool(Thermofleece) LS Crewneck in Black and it's a
tighter fit than I was hoping for. It would be a great base layer for a me,
but I'm not comfortable wearing it to work with my dad bod. I've already worn
it a few times and it's been through the wash once, but it's basically brand
new.

Here are more details on the Riv site:

$67 shipped.

Lost:

   - Hats. A bunch of hats that I used to tuck into my back pocket before I
got a front rack. So many good hats lost forever. Can't believe it took me
so long to learn my lesson.
   - My favorite merino wool long sleeve. Discovered it was gone within 10
minutes, but by the time I got back it was gone.
   - Wallet -- Someone was nice enough to drop it back in my mailbox after
   a few days. Phew!

Found:

   - Pocket knife with a 4" or 5" blade. It was open and sitting in the
middle of the bike lane. I used it all the time until I accidentally left
it in my carry on at the airport. Where does all that stuff end up anyway?
   - $20 bill
   - Jannd seat dangle bag with patch kit goodies
   - Aviator sunglasses in surprisingly good shape

[RBW] FS Silver Power Ratchet Shifters and Bar-end Pods

2017-11-08 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Hello again,

I have a set of Silver/IRD thumbies with some cosmetic character for sale.
The bolts on the bottom are oxidized on the outside and one of the black
tabs has been replaced with Newbaums. They are mechanically perfect.
Originally, they come with two sets of washers--one with a stopper tab and
one without. These just have one of each style of washer, which should
still give you all the range you need. I really liked the feel and look of
these shifters, but I going to give try indexed shifting.

See the pictures for more details:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/PEfKnI4Hp6BD3wCh1

$45 shipped for the thumb shifters.

I also have a set of Silver bar-end pods that I could throw in for an
additional $20. All the original bits are still there. They have a touch of
shellac on the edges, but otherwise they're basically new. Separately, I'd
sell them for $25 shipped.

$65 shipped for shifters and bar-end pods.

Sorry for the repeat post, but I thought this might be a more effective
route.

If yours are in better shape, I could throw in a few bucks to even things out.

I'm running Sunrace shifters mounted inside, but I'm thinking I'd like to have

[RBW] Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2017-10-22 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Hey, Y'all-

I got ants in my pants for some new handlebars. I've been riding the Albatross
bars since last spring and I love the upright riding position. Plus, they're
gorgeous/comfy. Although, ever since I've got them I wished they were wider.
Probably didn't help that I was riding the Bullmoose bars before them or that I
have wide shoulders. The Albatross performed well some long rides and varied
terrain, but I wish I could get out of the saddle more comfortably.

Anyway, now that VO has their quill stem with 31.8 clamp, I'm considering the
Jones H-bar. I'm thinking of the loop or the bend in 710mm. My biggest
hesitation is that I think they look kind of funny! I hate to write that out
loud, but it's true. The shape and the 31.8 clamp seem like they could clash on
a Riv set up. I thought the Map/Ahearne bars would be a good solution, but they
hand position wouldn't really be wider that the Albatross.

Anyone have the Jones loop or bend on their Riv that would be willing to
sharing photos/experiences? Convince me to stop putting fashion over function?
Or maybe you're Jones h-bar/Riv set up is gorgeous AND functional?

Anyone want to convince me the Map/Ahearne bar is the way to go? Would the
angle of the hand position be enough to solve the issue even though they aren't
much wider?

Thanks!

Hey, Jay

I'm so glad you posted this! I've been thinking about those tires for my

These seem like a great balance of ride quality/protection. You'll have to
report back on their durability after you've put some miles on them.

I like that dark tan sidewall, but I know it will start looking gnarly quick in
the winter riding here in Portland.

Also, I'm glad to see someone else putting stickers on their Riv!

Re: [RBW] Re: Show me your touring/camping setup!

2017-08-23 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Hey, Andrew-

Nice looking Bombadil!

I have the Raceguard G-ones that are sold on the riv site. I really like them
on dry roads and gravel. Haven't really ridden anything else on them, but I
hear they don't do well in wet conditions. They feel really fast and comfy.
They eat up a ton of road vibration so it feels like you're flying on rocket
clouds...or something like that. They aren't very durable though. I've ridden
them about 800 miles so far and the rear tire has already lost lots of tread. I
suppose that's always the trade off for lightweight/fast tires.

Cheers,
Tim

[RBW] PDX To Eclipse Ride - Anyone Going?

2017-08-18 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Hey!

Anyone planning on riding from Portland to the path of totality for the solar
eclipse on Monday? I'm going to! Even though Portland is 99% in the path, I
can't help myself getting caught up in the fervor to be in the path of
totality. I had some other plans fall through and I can't take a bunch of time
off, so I'm going to ride from Portland at 5am-ish to catch the eclipse in it's
full effect. I'm thinking I'll ride to Silverton, which is about 50 miles one
way. Predictions about traffic, huge bathroom lines and limited emergency
services have been horrible so it may be an eclipse-pocolypse, but it will
definitely be an adventure at the very least.

Let me if youre interested in coordinating! Or maybe you have a wayyy better
plan that I can tag along with :)

Also, there's a cool website to help Oregonians plan a bike trip to the path of
totality. Check it out: www.biketotheeclipse.com

I'll post a picture of my eclipse century set up.

Cheers,
Tim

[RBW] Cable/Housing Cutter Suggestions

2017-08-08 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
I've been using a cheapo tool to cut cables and housing forever, but it's
always a clunky process that results in frayed cables and/or frustration. I
hate cutting housing so much that I just left my housing way too long when I
recently changed my shifters.

Just did a quick search to see what's out there and it looks like $20-40 bucks
for something specific to bikes for cutting cable/housing. Does anyone have
experiences they'd like to share? Do I want a bike specific cable cutter or can
I get a generic hardware store version? Is it worth it to spend the extra few
$$ on this tool or do they all work the same?

If Riv sold one, I'd just buy that version.

Thanks!
Tim

2017-08-02 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Michelle! What an exciting dilemma you're in!

That's me Kurt is talking about! I didn't even occur to me that I might
have something to add to this post until Kurt added his two cents. I bought
his Proto-appaloosa this spring and I've been loving it. I haven't ever
ridden a Hunqapillar, but if anyone in Portland has a 62cm I'd love to take
it for a spin! The bike I own is basically Appaloosa geometry with a
Hunqapillar fork and diagatube. So far, I've mostly been commuting on it
with a few mini-tours on mixed road/gravel here in Oregon. Its VERY
comfortable. I was able to ride some rough gravel roads and you can just
fly on descents. It feels like you're floating through all the bumps. You
will notice that it takes a little extra leaning for tight corners. I have
dreams of riding more singletrack, but I know the vast majority of my
riding will be on the road or fire roads. Overall, I'd definitely recommend
the Appaloosa if you're looking for an all-arounder (tour, gravel, commute,
etc.). Here's a picture of the ride Kurt was referring to that I did with
my son: https://www.instagram.com/p/BXLg4k-BB32/?taken-by=hunqaloosa So
fun!

The long chain stays tend to draw attention of others, so you'll likely get
some comments and need to explain things for people. But the bike will
stand out for lots of other reasons too. :)

Re: [RBW] Medium Saddlesack w/out rack

2017-07-11 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
I'd rode my new medium without a support and found that it would start
rubbing when I hit bumps after a while when loaded. I have a 62cm Appaloosa
prototype and I thought I'd have plenty of room with my saddle height and
big frame. Guess not.

Here's a picture of it loaded where it looks like I should be fine, but it
ended up rubbing anyway after a while:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BV0_t9fhmXu/?taken-by=hunqaloosa

You can use a John's Irish Strap on the lower d-rings and around the saddle
stays to lift it up. Although, it's kind of a bummer to take the extra
step. Not a deal breaker though. Eventually, I think I'll get some sort of
support for mine. Maybe a Mark's rack.

Cheers,

[RBW] Re: Shifting Mystery - Help

2017-06-17 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Solved!

After stopping in to chat at the amazing non-profit bike shop, the Community
Cycling Center, I was tipped off that the issue could be caused by insufficient
cable tension. I'm sort of embarrassed that I overlooked this one. I don't
think I mentioned in my original post that I also changed from thumbies to bar
ends, which meant I rerouted my cables. But I guess I thought it was dialed in!
All it took was a little barrel adjusting and things are all set.

Phew! I'm glad it was something simple!

Thanks to everyone who chimed in!

[RBW] Re: Shifting Mystery - Help

2017-06-16 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
ascpgh: It's a Microshift Mezzo long cage derailleur. There is definitely
some play in the pulleys, so I might start by replacing those. But I almost
think that if I'm going that route I'll just get a new rear derailleur. The
Altus seems like a pretty low cost test.

Thanks, y'all! Sounds like I have some more fiddling to do. I'll report back
with my results!

[RBW] Re: Shifting Mystery - Help

2017-06-15 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Thanks for the tips. And for catching my mix up of high vs. low gears. I
checked it out and it is a 9 speed chain. Wonder if I could buy a 10spd chain
to give myself some more wiggle room in those high gears?

[RBW] Shifting Mystery - Help

2017-06-14 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
I just set up a new cassette, chain and chainrings, but now I'm having some
issues shifting in my lower gears. There is almost no leeway between my bottom
three gears so it's difficult(almost impossible) to line things up correctly
without the chain jumping around. For context, I'm running a 9 speed with a
wide/low double on a Sugino XD crankset with friction shifters. The mystery is
that things were working just fine with the old set up. Should I have gotten a
different cassette? Should I get a longer bottom bracket? Did they give me the
wrong chain? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

[RBW] WTB Saddlesack Medium

This list has been so good to me. One last try to see if anyone has a medium
saddlesack up for grabs. Let me know!

[RBW] WTB Medium Saddlesack - Convince Me Why I Need One

2017-06-07 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
I keep trying to convince myself that I don't need a medium saddlesack, but
I'm having a hard time (I've drafted this post and deleted it a few times
already). Anyone have a killer deal on a medium saddlesack? If it's
beausaged that's totally fine--better actually, since it would be cheaper.
I have a tan shopsack already, so bonus points for being matchy matchy if
you have tan.

Feel free to chime in with comments about your thoughts on the saddlesack
to help my justify buying one. I kind of shouldn't be spending money on
bike stuff right now...

[RBW] WTB Saddlesack Medium

2017-06-07 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
I've been trying to convince myself that I don't need a medium Saddlesack,
but I haven't been successful. Anyone got one they want to pass along? I'm
looking for a deal, so I don't mind if you have something that's beat up. I
have a tan shopsack, so it would be nice to do the matchy-matchy thing, but
I'm not to picky about that sort of thing.
