[RBW] Re: Snowy s24o, sleeping under the full moon

2016-01-27 Thread hsmitham
Mark,

You're intrepid. I was in a conversation yesterday with a fellow and he was
remarking how cold it was! I exclaimed it wasn't that cold, he said when he
leaves for work it's in the 40's and I mentioned that I knew of a guy who
winter bike camps in 15ºF. I thought you'd done this same type of thing in
-4ºF? Anyway 40's here in SoCal is cold but not really that back especially
when the high is in the mid 60's.

I love your snowy camping scenes and description. Keep the adventures
coming.

Best Regards,

~Hugh

[RBW] Re: joe appaloosa photos

2016-01-25 Thread hsmitham
Hi Patrick,

I just went through your images and I have to remark, that is a sweet
looking machine or better stated a fine steed indeed. The color is
gorgeous. Very good build.

On handle bars, I've never felt comfortable with that type of bar almost
too upright for me. But one's comfort is so subjective. For an upright bar
the Albatross are still my favorite, but I've since gone back to a drop bar
on my Hilsen. Actually a modified drop the Soma Portola's. They took a bit
of adjustment but now feel wonderful, though if I was designing a new bar
I'd have the ramps shorter. Probably one of the Salsa bars is already like
that but I didn't want to deal with the whole 31.8 clamp deal. I've heard
that "Riv" and Nitto are working on a new flared drop bar but that's just a
rumor that I can't substantiate.

Anyway, this is about your Joe Appaloosa not my handle bar preference. I
love it! I love the downtube script. Doesn't it have longer chainstays? How
does the ride feel compared to other bikes?

A new bike day is something to savor so enjoy in good health and many great
miles.

Best Regards,

~Hugh

[RBW] Re: Seeking Alejandro

2016-01-25 Thread hsmitham
Hi Tom,

I was at the grocery store the other day and witnessed three young (by my
standards) folks on bikes obviously homeless, two women and man. I felt so
sad for them! I feel so blessed to have come from a caring loving family,
gainfully employed with a roof over my head. I heard recently that Los
Angeles tops out as having the greatest number of homeless in the country
as of November of 2015 according to this LA Times

article. I don't have the answer it's a tough one. When I think about the
solution, give them tiny houses I figure human nature is to say NIMBY and
on the other side of the fence you're just creating Getto's! There are
those homeless that don't want to be fenced in and refuse to conform and
then those that are mentally ill and realistically need to be in some form
of treatment.

I think it's admirable that you and your neighbors go out and help
Alejandro Tom.

I think there is an underlying problem in our country that I think gets
swept under the proverbial rug. Homelessness is just the manifestation of
that underlying issue.

Thanks for posting about Alejandro Tom and I hope and pray he's okay.

Best regards,

~Hugh

[RBW] FS 56cm 2003 Rivendell Atlantis.

2016-01-22 Thread hsmitham

*2003 Rivendell Atlantis 56cm *

Purchased early 2014 and repainted by Allan Wanta. Beautiful understated
frame color. It’s always been garaged. It has been used so does have
scratches in the paint which I touched up with model paint. I’ve tried to
show all of the scratches in the pictures. They actually look worse in the
pictures than in reality. The seat tube cluster was created by the frame
pump. The one and only chain suck was enough to take the largest amount of
paint off (touched up) but can’t be seen as the crank hides it. The drive
train is in great shape with lots of life left. The serial number isn’t
visible on the bottom bracket in the pictures due to thicker paint. The
Serial # AT0502 is there. Since Rivendell doesn’t maintain a serial # page
these days it seems moot.

On shipping you pay shipping and insurance in the continental U.S. I’ll do
my best Rivendell packing and find you the least expensive shipping cost I
can find but usually it’s around $150.00. I’d prefer a check I don’t mind
waiting. My preference is to sell this as a complete bike. If you’re
looking for just a F/F let me know and if it doesn’t sell complete I may
consider selling just the F/F.

[RBW] OT Vintage MTB rehab project.

2016-01-18 Thread hsmitham
Hello Rivendellians,

I have a 1995 Salsa Ala Carte and I'd like to rehab it with a new drive and
cockpit. It has the original Salsa chromoly stem 130mm and have considered
throwing on a Ritchey 30º rise 80mm stem & straight MTB bar for more
comfort. The current setup I'm pretty stretched out.The old rapid fire
shifters just don't work, I've tried lot's of things to get the shifter
working (advice from LBS) but it seems easier to just buy new one's.

The drive is 8 speed and has a Cook Bros Crank *(they went out of business
in the early 2000's) which has a 4 bolt spider. I measured the inner bolts
distance between adjacent bolts and determined it was a 58mm BCD ring, I
also measured the outside bolts between adjacent bolts and figure it's a
94mm BCD ring. I used this chart which seemed the only one that had my
measurements, 34mm & 55mm respectively. It seems MTB's with all the new
tech have left these BCD's behind.

http://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/704206-chainring-bcd-chart.html

I went to the Peter White page and found this page
 http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/chainrings.asp

The TA Carmina rings seem like the right ones? But man are they expensive!

Is the bike worth keeping it somewhat period/vintage? Have I measured this
correctly? Are there other ring manufacturers making these ring sizes and
importantly less expensive. I've seen Vuelta and Real rings but just don't
know whether their quality rings?

I could just purchase a SLX 10 speed group for $230 and be done with it.

*I heard Cook Bros came back in 2010 but with limited offerings but my
search has been fruitless in terms of info regarding BCD ring sizes.

So thanks in advance for any wisdom the group can dispense.

~Hugh

[RBW] Re: Do you ever find yourself tempted by brifters?

2015-12-19 Thread hsmitham
Late to the party as is my penchant.

Back in 2012 I drank the Kool-aid and sold my carbon race bike. I went with
a Hilsen outfitted with noodle drop bars and the fancy TRP drilled brake
levers. At around the same time I acquired a 1984 Trek 660 from list member
Chris down Sanger, Texas way. It hung in my rafters for two years. I think
I had the notion to have a go faster bike, but I'm old and my memory isn't
what it used to be. Anyway, I'm glad that past me bought the frame set. In
the preceding years I've built up an Atlantis outfitted with BE's and
Albatross bars. Then early this year a 10 speed Campy Veloce group
complete with wheel set fell into my lap and the Trek was reborn with
modern DCL, brifters (whatever the hell you want to call them!) and I fell
in love with the ergo nature of this config. The more I rode the more I
thought how great these would be in off road scenarios. So the Hilsen is
being reimagined.

Some take-aways, the TRP brake levers are nice just not as nice as the
campy levers, which feel so damn natural. Bar ends are no nonsense and work
just fine and on a world tour most likely what I'd roll with. But that's
not happening anytime soon. So if I have a mechanical I figure I can work
something out and limp to a bike store. I still love drop bars and combined
with brifters with all the controls at my fingertips it's a winner for me.
Still looking for the best dirt drop handlebar to mate up with my new
Hilsen config. I like Shimano but I think campy nailed it, and it's too
early to say anything about the Sram setup but so far so good.

My experience with bike's is if your wallet allows it try it!

I like this from Scott C.

"Variety is good, keeps your mind from following ruts".

[RBW] ISO Trek Frame & Fork.

2015-11-29 Thread hsmitham
Hi Folks,

I'm searching for a mid 80's Trek frame & fork. This is for a friend who has a
82 pbh but is on the overall short stature. I'm thinking something in the 52
to 54 cm size. Ideally a tour model but a race bike would work too.

There's no hurry to find one but I thought if there's a decent price out there
then great.

Message me off list.

Re: [RBW] Hope You Heal Soon

2015-11-21 Thread hsmitham
The other day on my usual ride, as always I cross the road and head in the
opposite direction of traffic briefly making a quick left onto a dirt path.
On this occasion a fellow in a car was looking down while driving and
veered off the road and was headed straight for me, I was just about to
bail when his head popped back up and he quickly made it back on the road!
Point is there's a lot of distracted driving and cyclists will undoubtedly
lose in any collision. Stay vigilant out there folks.

I'm just glad that this accident didn't end in a tragic way. I hope Jan has
a speedy recovery and no lasting long term effects from these injuries.

[RBW] Re: It was a nice day for...

2015-11-16 Thread hsmitham
I love it!

Out here in the land of drought I'm like a cat and freak out when it rains
these days. What the hell is this stuff falling from the skies?? Usually
John, I can take a day off the bike and merely wait a day for that unusual
meteorological event to pass. This past Summer I was on tour up on
Vancouver Island with a buddy from Portland. We had some rain and I was
running around figuratively battening down my hatches and he was like
looking at me like I was a freak! Well from his perspective I suppose I was
as he just threw on his rain jacket and just rode. I had brought only a
light windbreaker (I was weight pack conscious) so after riding about 15
miles my entire chest was soaked. We stopped into a local coffee shop in
Duncan B.C. to wait the storm out, while drinking my coffee the barista
offered to throw my wet clothes into their dryer in back. Life is
surprising and good.

In another life I lived in Northern California and well it does rain there,
I recall the sweet satisfaction of being out in the rain for hours and
coming into the warmth of the home with a roaring fire and hot chocolate.

John where do you live for context?

And I really liked the format of gear/purpose and function.

[RBW] Re: Tail wind, head wind

2015-11-01 Thread hsmitham
Lol's yeah I've had the same experience deceiving my self into thinking I'd
improved in my fitness level only to be crushed with the realization that it
had been a tail wind and not me. I must say having a strong tail wind is
magical for that fleet flying feeling. I've been looking at head winds these
days as my resistance training partner. It's all good.

I suppose I'll weigh in with my preference. I'll take the tail wind going out.

[RBW] Re: Keven

2015-10-21 Thread hsmitham
I mean where do you begin? If you look up the definition of customer
service there he is. He set the bar on knowledge, patience and sheer
kindness. Even though he couldn't talk me out of a custom paint on my
Hilsen, he surely talked me off a cliff a few times with his common sense
approach. When the wife and I traveled to Riv Hq in 2012 he put us at ease.
When I heard Keven was leaving I had two competing emotions, complete and
utter sadness and joy that he would be closer to his family. I know that
whatever he touches in the next chapter of work will be golden because
that's the sort of guy he is. For me Rivendell will never be the same and
that shine above Riv Hq will be just a tad dimmer. All the best to you
Keven.

Okay that's a load of horse manure Los Angeles is a behemoth! Despite that
fact you still sometimes run into someone from the RBW bunch in person. In
this case, whilst rambling through Silverlake and grabbing a bite to eat at
the local farmer's market I ran into Vanessa on her pink Bridgestone. From
a distance I saw the unmistakable Riv saddle sack and a basket with a large
shop sack, hard to miss in the urban wilds, especially in a sea of race
bikes and run of the mill commuter bags. We chatted about Riv stuff,
commuter rail woes and her recent bike tour in Zion National Park.
Hopefully, she see's this post and can add her feedback regarding her
experience on tour. It was a nice visit with a charming lovely lady. Here's
proof this actually happened.

[RBW] Re: questions about buying /selling a bike on this group

2015-08-14 Thread hsmitham
Hi Bill,

Like others I've bought many items from this group. I haven't sold too much
though. My experiences have all been top notch. With that said I will like
the Jim our moderator caution you that you make transactions at your own
risk. This is a searchable forum and there is very little vetting as to who
can buy and sell. I'd like to take this opportunity to share an experience
I had recently not bike related but selling on eBay and receiving funds
through PayPal.

I sold a Sony a6000 digital camera on eBay in May. The day the auction
closed through eBay communication the buyer asked me to send the camera to
an address they supplied. I waited for the funds to show up in my PayPal
account. They did but were pending as un-verified buyer after three days
it was changed to just pending I figured this normal as I needed to ship
the item then the funds would be released. I printed out a shipping label
and went to my local USPS they couldn't find the address? They said maybe
it's a new development and not showing yet in our records? Here's my
biggest error in this entire process! At this point I recalled that the
buyer had given me a different address. So I promptly went home and
retrieved the address and mailed it out. What I should have done was
contact the buyer and ask questions which would have, should have thrown up
a reg flag. I should have cancelled the sale. But alas I was happy it sold
and felt under pressure to be a prompt seller to maintain good eBay seller
feedback. So with the auction closed and the payment made through PayPal.
All seemed good to go! Approximately 25 days later I received
correspondence from PayPal that the buyer opened a dispute with their
credit card company claiming they didn't authorize the purchase!

Here's where if you've ever watched the movie Brazil you can appreciate
the morass I fell into. Since the transaction was a completed transaction
eBay washed their hands of it and referred me to PayPal. I lost count how
many times I called PayPal's customer service, hung up the phone left with
a level of frustration I've never felt before, they have( I figure
purposely) the most incompetent people at this point. Here's what I
garnered from all those conversations.

1. Don't worry if the credit card companies found in favor of the buyers
then no one would do business with the CC companies.
2. A dispute like this can take up to 75 days.
3. They PayPal gave the CC company the incorrect tracking number. So the CC
company obviously figured I was a scammer.
4. We will give all the information you gave us to the CC company.
Basically, they PayPal are your advocate at this point between you and the
buyers CC company. Shaky at best.
5. Since you didn't ship to the buyer's address we have on file all PayPal
seller protections are void.

I finally received an email from PayPal that the CC company decided in
favor of the Buyer. At this point my PayPal account shows a negative
balance of $880 $20 of that is a charge back fee from PayPal. Next up I
started getting calls from PayPal! The person on the other end of this
conversation was clearly competent. From that conversation I was told that
seven days after a chargeback PayPal requires you settle your account with
them and if you don't your account will be sent to a collections agency. At
this point you may ask well you've got options. Right?

Since eBay discards all records of transactions after 60 days I can't
communicate with the buyer through them. Back in early June when this all
happened I did send a eBay email to the buyer asking how we can resolve
this, no reply. The email that PayPal has on file for the buyer is bogus.
Both eBay and PayPal won't give any information about the buyer for privacy
reasons. That competent PayPal representative said, oh a lawyer can help
you get access to the buyer's records. I contacted my local police and the
detective said we can't help you this is a civil case and PayPal is the
victim.

Very important here is the PayPal user agreement. It states that you are
responsible for any and all chargebacks period. In researching my options
I found there are numerous scams perpetrated on the eBay platform and it's
not necessarily a safe place to sell or buy things. Other sellers a lot
more experienced than I have fallen victim to scams/thefts for way more
money. In fact those merchants doing business on eBay received
correspondence from eBay and PayPal claiming it's a hazard of doing
business. These companies know their platforms are used by thieves and yet
they portray a sense of safety. Granted, of all the transactions the bad
experiences amount to a small fraction.

My takeaway from this experience.

I'm paying back PayPal and will no longer use them to send or receive money
period nor any other electronic payment service. In the future I will only
accept checks and won't ship until those funds are cleared by my bank. I
figure either the

They are not the bolt on kind.

My Bleriot was originally built up with some plastic tubing that lays onto
the guide channels. But sometimes I find they have popped out, and the
cables and tubes run outside of the molded channels under the bb. I am
thinking this probably makes shifting worse.

Is it ok to ditch the plastic tubes and just run the cables bare in the
metal bb shell channels? Or will they wear themselves and the metal/paint
of the channels away over the years of rubbing?

[RBW] Off topic alert!! Feedback request.

2015-06-24 Thread hsmitham
Thought I'd ask the group...Anyone have experience with these Swrve shorts?

http://swrve.myshopify.com/products/mens-cigarette-shorts?variant=126704252

These are their cigarette shorts so their tight fitting, not lycra tight but
still snug. They have two types in this model the cotton twill fabric with a
small amount of lycra for stretch and their new fabric called durable cotton
which has cotton, nylon (durable) and some lycra for stretch and I think a
coating for wind and water resistance.

What I'd really like to know is whether the first fabric model (which is
incidentally the older model) after a long day in the saddle will dry out?
Usually after a long day I'll change into some knickers around camp to give the
shorts time to air out and dry.

Do they soften up after washing and are they too heavy for hot Summer

thick especially as opposed to their other specific lightweight shorts.

Your feedback is appreciated.

[RBW] Re: How are albatross and albastache bars for long distance riding?

2015-06-19 Thread hsmitham
Read all the posts and agree with Garth. There are just so many variables.
Here are my experiences.

On my 58cm Hilsen in 2013 I toured from SF to Paso with noddle bars and
found it adequate, they really made it difficult on a slow loaded climb as
it was difficult to keep the load under control, and I found I couldn't
remain in the drops for long as back fatigue set in. Even so I was
reluctant to go with an upright bar. I eased my way in with the Albastache
bars on both my Hilsen and Atlantis. On the Hilsen I had a 9cm tallux stem
but I felt slightly stretched out, I have some low back disk bulging (here
is the first example of differentiation between people) so being able to
sit fully upright is a benefit. So recently, on the HIlsen I switched to a
8cm dirt drop which obviously brought the bars up and back. That change
seemed to be the sweet spot for now. I say for now because we are all in
flux, so what feels good now may be different in the future. The Hilsen is
now relegated to day rides between 15 30 miles, I hope to increase my
miles but that's my reality these days.

My 56cm Atlantis had the Albastache bars coupled with a 12cm tallux stem
and I did lot's of day rambles and overnights, no long tours, like the
Hilsen I felt stretched out and on a long ride I had hand wrist
discomfort. Recently, as some of you may already know I traded out the 12cm
for the 9cm (from the Hilsen) then finally went to a 10cm tallux stem and
believe, I'm almost certain I found the sweet spot. The bar clamp is just
slightly above my saddle height with the bar ends angled down. I find I
have three primary hand positions.

1. To the rear at the grips.
2. just fore of the brake clamp sometimes over the brake clamps.
3. In the so called hooks.

All three give me great riding postures. The hooks I'm angled forward to
cut into the wind, and the two rear positions give my back varying degrees
of relief. In the full upright position I'm not gonna be pushing for speed,
but I'm not real slow just a more leisurely attitude. In the hooks I feel
more aggressive and can lean in for more speed.

Between the two different setups I have to say they're both entirely
different! I love them both for completely different reasons. The Hilsen is
light nimble running with next to no load other than me, the Grand Bois
Hetres are light, supple and quick adding to the fleet feeling and the
Albastache bars have many of the positive attributes of drop bars, keeping
the Hilsen more racerly

The Atlantis with all the rack add on's feels like a 4x4 truck, solid, with
great visibility and a sure footed vibe running the Schwalbe Thunder
Burt's. By no means is the Atlantis a slug, I still feel the frame coupled
with the TB's and the Alba' give back a supple comfortable ride without
compromising too much on forward momentum.

So which one is the most comfortable? I have to say the Atlantis. Have I
done rando miles? No. Have I put them to the test on a long tour? No. But
based on my previous experiences I feel pretty confidant that they'll be
great. I'm going on tour in July and will have more feedback on the
Albatross bars and their merits or demerits.

In regards to Mark's points. Yes the bar ends can and do get in the way!
Especially on tight turning. I've ridden my Atlantis on plenty of single
track, tight vegetation and hairpin turns and never felt unduly hindered.
There have been a handful of times when my knee knocked into the right
shifter and gave me an undesired shift but never too bad. And on tight
turns in awkward positions it probably made more sense to dismount or take
it easy. IMO my Atlantis weighs 30+ lbs I'm just not gonna be going fast
anywhere. It's all about making a conscious prioritized compromise. What do
you want to achieve in relation to your riding habits and experience. Funny
how with bikes at least IME it takes time, money and patience. Hope some of
this helps and good luck in your discovery process.

Both the Nitto Crystal Fellow and Nitto Lugged seat posts seem to be

It looks like shortening the lugged seat post would get either the B68s

Are there any problems with sawing a bit off the end, or should I try
 finding something shorter?

Any alternatives, ideas, suggestions, hints, advice, and dire warnings

 2. Not enough for TBs plus fenders, so the fenders had to go.

 3. The old Brooks Plump Grips looked great, but the supposed length

very well in practice, so installed a basic pair of black “cork” grips from
VO, with the right side cut to size to fit the Rohloff shifter.

 4. And I finally got around to adjusting the Rohloff shifting, so that I

The other thread on the joys of wrenching made me want to share part of my
day's wrenching project. The Saluki re-build has allowed me to start
messing around with the Bombadil which maintained it's initial
configuration since I scrambled to put it together for my big Veterans Day
ride last November. This frame has so much flexibility! Honestly though I
think it really just wants fatter tires and sleak, flared handlebars! So
here is what I've been working on

 http://dr2dc.blogspot.com/2015/06/nobby-bombadil.html

For those keeping track those are 2.25, 650B Nobby Nic's. Definitely on
the outside of recommended width for the first gen Bomba's but I think in
un-muddy situations it's going to be fine. I picked up these tires locally
and couldn't pass on the opportunity to check the clearances. 2.1 is
definitely the sweet spot for this frame though. The Nitto RM14 Dirt Drop
bars are remarkably comfortable to ride in the drops at least as high up as
I have them. I'm hoping to get off-road for a couple hours this week or
 coming weekend.

[RBW] Re: Car Racks Rivs

2015-06-12 Thread hsmitham
Michael,

Pretty sure you've already tried this but I'll forge ahead anyway. My wife
and I both have Riv's with Albatross bars outfitted with racks, bags and
baskets, using any rack is a challenge. I've used a number of them over the
years.

Currently on my Miata I use a Saris Freedom hitch rack
https://www.saris.com/product/freedom-2 ( tray type with central mast that
attaches to the down tube)

And on our truck with camper I have a swing away hitch rack ( the type that
suspends the bike from the top tube) to have access to the rear.
 http://www.yakima.com/shop/bike/hitch/swingdaddy An arm adapter is
required on this one with the Mixte.

In both cases I have to loosen the stem and rotate the handle bars and
either lower or raise the seat to clear each other. I make sure to mark
seat and handlebar height/position obviously.

I used to have a Thule hitch rack like the one you're considering. The
stabilizing arm ideally makes contact with the top of the front tire. I
suppose you could cheat it a bit forward to clear the leading edge of the
fender but that wouldn't be optimal.

https://www.thule.com/en-us/us/products/carriers-and-racks/bike-carriers/hitch-mounted-bike-carriers/thule-t2-2-bike-916xtr-_-916xtr

In one of the pictures in the above link you can see where the stabilizing
arm makes contact with the front tire. I sold mine when I sold our other
truck and bought the Miata. The Saris is much lighter weight. All have
pluses and minuses.

Hope I was of some help.

I have been riding bikes with fenders for about 15 years now and have only

We have a Saris TBones Hitch rack on our Prius and I found it worked well
with both my Saluki or Ram and Pat's Sequoia. However I have never liked
having the weight of the bikes up that high with the additional stress it
puts on the rack and hitch. Now Pat has switched to riding a Betty with
Albatross bars and I am always struggling to make the two bikes fit. It is
doable as a two person job. I bought and tried one of these parallel TT
but it made the situation worse. It's a challenge to get the her handle
bars my front rackto clear. Likewise my bars her rear rack. Since
both bikes have racks fenders, they are fairly heavy as bike go today but
still within the racks spec. Still the vertical support flexes some under
 load.

So... I have been looking at a new hitch racks, especially ones where the
bikes sit in a well and get clamped around the tire. Does anyone have
experience with these to share? Do you have to put the top clamp around
the tire, or is it OK to put it over the fender? The Yakima rack
installation instructions specifically say to put the top hook within 2 of
the fork, which clearly rules out using it with any top rack, like my
Mark's mini. The Saris instructions don't say that is necessary, but the
video on their web site shows them setting it up that way. Finally, how
close together are the wells; is there sufficient space for Albatross bars?

 Michael

Currently, I'm redoing both cockpits on my Hilsen Atlantis, just finished

Stem. I rode it for about two weeks to make sure this was the right
decision. Today I'll be cleaning the Drive train. The Atlantis got a new

distant horizon to tinker/wrench on.

Oh and I'm installing a Mark's rack on the Wife's Betty.

I would like to carry more than the 6-lb weight limit for the Mark's rack.

[RBW] Re: loaded handling question

2015-05-31 Thread hsmitham
Whew! I just read all the posts, took two attempts. I've been busy!

I have to agree with rack/load flex as at least one point of origin of
oscillation that is then transmitted through out the frame, but in the extreme.
Both my Hilsen and Atlantis have had shimmy. When riding the Hilsen basically
unloaded at speeds above 25 mph hands free I get shimmy as soon as I squeeze
the top tube with my knees it's gone! Hands on nothing.

I had the same issue with my '03 Atlantis loaded or unloaded. Violent shimmy
even with one hand loaded and horrible at low speed climbing, lots of drift and
correction which is super fatiguing. Mike Schiller suggested the Tange needle
bearing headset, which I installed. The headset made a huge difference and like
Doug said the increased friction at the bottom race (the upper race are normal
bearings)dampens the oscillation. But this headset will only go so far in
resolving shimmy. Personally, I feel that the ride quality inherent with Riv's
tubing and geometry that we admire is also what contributes to frame flex and
consequently shimmy. In the case of both my bikes unladen I hypothesize the
shake originates at the bottom fork race and becomes amplified though out the
frame. Add a load that flexes and you have a recipe for increased shaking. I
understand that some Riv's don't manifest these qualities therefore I attribute
this to inconsistencies in batch builds. Also, I'm certainly no expert in
tubing types and geometry but understand there are other bike builds that don't
manifest these qualities. But since we're talking about a Riv All Rounder.

David, I understand you want to use what you have but I'll still throw out my
suggestions even though.

So how to mitigate these aspects and have the stability desired? Install the
Tange headset number one, next as Doug mentioned, try different load
configurations. I like a low front load even with a medium trail fork using a
Tubus low rider rack with hoop, small campee rack/basket configuration under 3
lbs and a light rear load strapped/secured to an R14 rack. When feasible I
ditch the low rider's off road.

In terms of cockpits, and I know lots of you love drop bars but for comfort I
like Albatross bars up high, I can be in an aggressive position in the hooks
and when I need to give my back and neck a break I can sit up with no need to
ride hands free.

I have plans to remove replace my Hilsen's headset and since my Atlantis is
my loaded tour rig I have plans to have a low trail fork built just to see
whether or not it makes a difference. My .02.

Cheers,

~Hugh

Intermediate Riv tubing, OS downtube, nothing super light, nor super

What's the quill length of the Technomic? The Tallux that Riv sells is 225mm.
Is it the same as the Tallux? And what are the differences, finish? And drew
why do you want a shorter quill maybe saving weight?

I've got a 12cm Tallux 26.0mm on my Albatross bars with shims and need to go
shorter to a 90 or 80mm,25.4mm stem. I have a 90mm, 26.0 on my Albastache and
I'd like to switch to a 70mm 26.0 stem.

I know it's a long shot do you fellows have either of those your not using?

In the interest of saving money I may just throw the 90mm on with shims and
