RE: [RBW] Re: Handlebar setup

2011-05-21 Thread jim phillips

Matt, that is exactly what I did with my Sam Hilborne. I got the seat right
(height) then carried a wrench with me and adjusted the handlebar height. Then,
seat fore and aft and finally rechecked the seat height. It took a few days of
tweeking but the ride is very nice now and I at 60 wake up eacvh morning with a
few aches and pains to start with. Don't need any extras while out looking at
the beautiful women,.. ahem, I mean scenery! :^)

Zaelia, sorry to hear about your troubles with getting the right bike
 fit.

That being said, please read the remainder of this message
understanding that it is rather biased :) I am extremely skeptical
 of professional bike fitting.

I think you're better off just getting the right leg extension (seat-
height), and then playing around with bar and saddle fore/aft postion
yourself until you're comfortable. The most important 'fitting'
session you can have is to ride a bike(!) carrying a 6mm wrench, and
adjust as necessary. In fact, always carry that wrench, because even
after years of riding, you may decide you want your saddle 1cm forward
or backward or your bars higher/lower.

Stem length isn't something you can adjust easily without having
multiple stems (or an adjustable one), so best thing you can do is
leave your handlebars untaped until you have that settled.Of
course, as soon as you want to try different handlebars, your
preferred stem length goes out the window and you have to start over
 again.

For saddle height, the best advise I've seen is, roughly:sit on
seat, fully extend leg, heel over pedal, should just barely touch.
Or, measure 'PBH' rivendell-style, i.e. pulling up as hard as
possible, then subtract 10cm, set seat-height there.Ride bike,
adjust as necessary (5mm hex wrench, or whatever size your seat collar
 bolt).

Finally, keep in mind that bodies/minds change over time, so things
like desired saddle height and reach change over time for a given
individual. It is possible that changes will be more rapid and
pronounced if you are just getting into riding again after a long
break.Just take your time and ease into it, is the best advise I
can give.Start with short rides, but do them regularly. In my
humble opinion, doing 'big' rides before you have your fit/comfort
dialed-in is going to skew your understanding of your own fit/comfort
needs, and lead you down the wrong solution paths.

Pretty. I want to get a few nice cycling posters. I do have this one,
found at my usual emporium. (I am sure no one will be offended. I am
not at all trying to be controversial; I like this photo as a good
example of late 19th century commercial poster art and one related to
 cycling.)

On a similar note: where can I find posters of the famous photos like
that of Bartali shifting his Parigi-Roubaix or Cambria Corsa on a
climb, or of Coppi climbing, and so on? Coppi and Bartali in
particular, tho' I wouldn't mind Anquetil or Kublet or others from the
 30s to the 50s.

I use a Fry Baby deep fryer. I don't know what temp it heats to. FYI, the
wax is useless with the slightest bit of moisture. Not a problem for me in the

begins. That's just for ~half a mile though.

I'd say, given the area around your farm, get a bike that can take
wider tires than the Homer. Another Sam, at least, or better yet an
Atlantis, Bomba, or Hunqa. Id' say these last 3 are similar enough
that you could go by price and/or paint scheme. The Sam doesn't come
in a 54, just a 52, which may be too small. The others thus may fit
 better, too.

RE: [RBW] Re: Blog post about tubing for AHH

2011-02-10 Thread jim phillips

I agree Pete. I am also an amateur astronomer and mirror and lens makers
stopped telling the buyer the actual wavelength coreection of their products
because even though you could see no difference, people were reselling mirrors
with better numbers for more money. And, that pissed the mirror makers off.
So, insted of providing the numbers with each mirror they now guarantee at
least X wavelength correction. Sometimes we get all caught up in numbers that
in reality have no meaning. I love my sSm Hilborne and I will leave it at that.

About newenglandbike's wood analogy, I think a more accurate analogy
might be that knowing the TYPE of wood is important, but knowing the
BRAND is probably not. You certainly want to know your house is being
built of a certain grade and species, but whether that wood comes from
Weyerhauser or Georgia-Pacific makes no difference.
To bring this back OT, it makes complete sense to want to know that
your bike is made of good material. In Riv's case, many of us are fine
with Grant's trust me, it's good. But I think many riders have a
legitimate desire to know more. You may have found you like the ride
of bikes with certain tubing specs (though I doubt one could discern
between brands with the same specs) and as mentioned above one may
have specific concerns about durability or other things.
As I have said before, Riv/Grant only seem to end up creating grief
for themselves when they share too much - the confusion around the
multi-ethnic Sam Hillbornes being only the latest example. It goes
against their pay no attention to the man behind the curtain message
 - find a builder you trust, trust them (it's good), and just get out
 and ride.
Maybe Grant is the Wizard of Walnut Creek? ;-)

Living where I live in New England, cycling year round is impractical,
plus for my business, I have to be places, sometimes from Boston, to
Hartford, to Brattlebor all in the same day.

To that end, I needed to able to carry things, people, plow my
driveway when needed etc., So I dive a 4 dr Dodge diesel pick-up.
Earlier in it's life I was able to buy B100 (pure veg diesel fuel),
and in colder whether, down to around 30 deg, I'd run B-20 (20% of
same). Below that only traeted fuel will work w/o the dreaded gelling
 that occurs.

A funny thing started coming to my attention. Every time the price of
dino diesel went up, Bio-fuels went up so they were always slightly
higher. When I asked why, my Bio-fuel dealer told me that the state
Dept of Consumer Protection (or whomever) had mandated this so that
bio-fuels didn't get a competitive advantage(!). I gave up at that
point. I commute (35 miles one-way) when I can, drive when I need to
and do what's necessary to make a living.

I've spent time in Evanston IL, just off the Red Line (I think) and
never drove anywhere, even caught the train out to O'hare. Pretty
nice but that will never, ever happen in this day of NIMBY. People
won't allow it. But if not for that system, those residents would be
 driving also, without a doubt.

As stated in another thread, I'm hoping I see the day when there is no
more fuel oil, coal etc., available-use it all up as fast as you can,
be glutenous in your consumption. We'll then get nukes, and
everything will be electric. Without those reliable sources of power,
which solar/wind will never provide, we
re screwed anyway. That goes for the rest of the world. Nobody in a
developing country thinks about 50 years down the road, that's a
luxury we have in the U.S., Europe, etc. BTW, the reason the Euro's
can put money into bike lanes, alt trans projects, etc., is because
they don't have much of a defense budget-we do that for them!!! Think
about it, U.S. bases all over Europe, and trust me, the governments
want us there to do that heavy lifting.

Lastly, so there is no confusion, I respect the gentleman's right to
follow his conscience. He is free and right to do so, as long as what
he does, does not pee in the water upstream from where others drink.

 Sorry, a bit long.

I have a Honda Element too and I think it is ideal for a bike and gear
carrier. I use fork holders mounted on pieces of old Trex decking to lower
the bikes to make easy entrance to rear hatch. As an exercise I managed to
fit four bikes alternating front ends and back ends but three is more
practical (this is with both seats removed).
As to comfort, I have made two trips to the mountains of Colorado from
Cleveland with my element which were ok sitting in the front seat. I made a
trip to North Carolina with four guys in the car where I got to sit in the
back which was annoying with the rear seat theater seating. However, on all
those trips the mpg was right around 30 mpg on the interstates.

After commuting home in the dark and rain this evening (Seattle) it
occurred to me that, even with a nice Princeton-tech swerve n the seat

RE: [RBW] Re: What Makes the Rivendell

2011-01-08 Thread jim phillips

Rivendell bicycles are special for many reasons. Grant is Not a frame maker. He
is a designer. Over many years of trial and error maybe even with a bit of luck
or, better yet, magic, he came upon a design that really works and works
wonderfully. Then, he searched to find the best frame makers to follow his
design to the smallest nitpicking point. His frames are made for Rivendell Just
as he designed them.

I notice my Riv's feel quicker (even if they aren't) than my other bikes of

I seem to have a more comfortable ride which I attribute to the steal and

So even though I read that LHT's are great and we can use this or that I

Anyway right or wrong I've found myself looking at bikes and seeing that
it's not just steel or a leather saddle or bags that is Riv'ish .. it's not
  some cult of practicality even.
But as a package of geometry (I am dumber than box of rocks on that subject)
size and style combined that make the rivendell bike.

If I got the same ride quality and handling and feel from an LHT or a Gunner
  at 500 bucks I'ld go there, but I don't .. this could be because I'm 6'5
tall or it could be I'm delusional.

What makes the Rivendell Different.. how does one explain that difference to

I have only been using it for 2 months now but so far so good. It is a
little narrower than a b.17 but not in a bad way. Still has enough
room accommodate my sitbones. The shape seems perfect for me.
The craftsmanship is stunning compared to Brooks.
Compared to the now incredibly saggy brooks it does feel a lot firmer. I did
ride a 200k permanent within a few weeks of owning it and toward the end I
did have to ride out of the saddle occasionally to give my slightly
protesting sitbones some relief. It was not agonizing and only started
setting in during the last few miles but was noticeable and distracting
nevertheless. (Still significantly better than having the metal frame of the
b.17 dig into me though.). So far the Berthoud is perfect for up to a 100
miles and I expect it to get even more comfortable as the saddle and I get
  more used to eachother.
I purchased mine from Rene Herse Bicycles who lets you try the saddle for 60

I also received a new Sam (52) last week and put it together and rode
it for the first time on Sunday. It was a short ride but it is a huge
improvement over anything I've ridden before. Things are a little
hectic and cold right now but I'm looking forward to going all out
with it. On the other hand, I sort of want to keep it in its pristine
condition for a little while. I have Grand Bois Hetre 42mm tires
(it's a 650B) and am thinking about getting VO 52 Zeppelin polished
fenders. The bar tape was not my first choice but Newbaum grey was
out. I've got some mixed reaction on the color combo but I more like
it than not. It should make the bike stand out at the Riv Ride East
in May. The color of the bike is closer to green (it's the Atlantic
green) than the blue it sometimes appears in these photos. It is a
 great color: http://www.flickr.com/photos/norro/sets/72157625647582676/.

Do you think some unintentional bias was causing him to ride harder on
the steel bike in order to keep the same time? If so, it was
remarkably consistent over the course of 56 rides and nearly 1500
 miles.

Commuting with stop signs would give the lighter bike an even bigger
advantage than in sporting riding/racing as you would have 0-25 mph
acceleratons instead of 20-25 mph accelerations.

If carrying an extra five pounds of luggage on both the commuter bike
and the racing bike makes the racing bike advantage moot; what does
that say about plopping a 150 lb rider into the saddle? Moot x 30?

The upshot is that lightweight bicycles are in their element in

I do not have a car, so am often tempted to ride the bike when and
where conditions are less than optimal. Over the years I have had
enough close calls that when things get really bad I either take mass
transit, a taxi, walk or stay put.

I want to enjoy cycling, not endure.

It has snowed slowly and steadily through the week, leaving about 15

I headed into town at 5:00, in my car and drove down an unlit country

As I passed him (her?) I saw that the tail light was just avg.

My first thought was, wow that takes some guts, but my second thought

choose to do, unless it was absolutely necessary.

RE: [RBW] Re: Which Rivendell bike?

Yes, color primarily :^) Luckily the Hillborne only comes in one standard color
now. After seeing Velouria's Sam on her blog Lovely Bicycles I knew I wanted
one.

The Roadeo does seem to be different in that it is primarily made for speed
and, who can resist a Homer? Gorgeous blue!

I guess it's OK to own more than one Rivendell and I can see I am headed that
way!
