[RBW] Need advice on a potential Quickbeam Modification

2016-03-01 Thread sanjoser
I'm once again considering having my Quickbeam modified to use a belt
drive. I saw
a ton of them at NAHBS and a carbon belt seems to make a lot of sense over
a chain.
I suspect that the frame modification will be major.
Does anyone have any advice on this?

[RBW] New Drivetrain for my Atlantis

2012-03-21 Thread sanjoser
hello everyone

I've had a mix of components on my atlantis for it's life, these 10 years
or so.
different shifters, hubs, gears, drivetrain, etc.
I've got the urge to do an upgrade, and I'd really like to go campy. I've
been
advised that my chris king hubs are fine, so long as they get serviced
every
six months, so I guess I'll keep those, but everything else is up for
change.
This is my goto bike for commuting and tours. I guess I don't have to
explain that
to this group.
So, what 's the consensus?
best regards
tom

OK, ok...the light.  It's a Schmidt Edelux, which runs off the Shimano

Clever Cycles, or SJS (in the UK).  I purchased mine from SJS, and it
shipped with the mount you see (which simply bolts onto the Nitto mini

 Hope that helps.

I want to recommend riding in the Paso Robles Ca area. We found
lots of beautiful uncrowded roads with respectful drivers. There were

rolling hills, and the scenery was terrific.

a little OT, but we rode on my Atlantis and my wife's Ram, so it

[RBW] Re: QB rear wheel

2009-02-25 Thread sanjoser

I've had some trouble keeping the rear wheel in one place as well.
I took the trouble to mark the quick release when I thought I had it
lined up pretty well, and it seems to slowly walk away from the marks
over a 20-30 rides of an hour each.
I've been wondering if the chain is going to wear a little faster
because
it's slightly out of line. any thoughts on that?

I think this is why the axle may be more likely to move on a
singlespeed.  The chain, while pedaling forward, pulls the axle both
forward and up.  The force, resisting forward or trying to pedal
backward, pulls the axle both forward and down.  Since there is a tiny
bit of play, everytime it makes the transition from up to down and
vice versa, it will slip forward a little, as well.

Having a derailer and access to large rear sprockets will actually
increase the force pulling the rear axle forward and up due to the
increase leverage of applying the force farther from the axle.
Pedaling harder will linearly increase the force applied to the rear
axle, but shifting to a larger rear sprocket will multiply the force
 on the rear axle.

On my dinglespeed (Redline Monocog 29er, not a Quickbeam), grinding up
steep hills in the lower gear will sometimes cause the rear wheel to
slip forward - and this is with a bolt-on axle. Here's my theory: with
no derailer, there's no worry of spurious gear-hopping so I worry less
about how much torque I put on the cranks, and so I crank harder. For
this reason I can put a lot more force into a derailer-less bike. So
there might be something to the idea that wheel slippage is a greater
  threat w/o a derailer.

[RBW] Re: lighting question

2009-02-24 Thread sanjoser

thanks. I remembered the difference between Auf und Zu, opened
the lamp, and the bulb looks burned out. I'm really surprised that it
burned out relatively quickly (I doubt I have more than 20 hours
on the bulb), but I suppose that can happen. I'll figure out where
to buy replacement bulbs.
thanks

Upon close inspection, a burned out bulb will generally show a small
burn mark on the glass. Otherwise, it could be a loose connection
