[RBW] Re: Mtb Levers for Cantis
Garth, Perfect, exactly the info I was looking for. Thanks. I'm bummed about the FL730, as the quick release is a nice problem solver. I've got a pair of Dia Compe SS-5 Mark II's (geez, I'm a geek) on the way from another list member. I'll give those a shot. [RBW] Re: Mtb Levers for Cantis
Ginz, The Tektros that I use (aka Performance Bike Forte Team levers aka Tektro RT354AG) have a 2 position adjustable pull(linear/canti). That's what the nut is for on the beginning of the lever arm. The FL730 does not appear to have this, like many of their seemingly infinite number of brake levers. There is no play in the pivot. The FL730 should work with canti's, but should doesn't guarantee it works well. Anyway, yes ,the Riv one is different than the VO offering, it is the Tektro RT354AG. It's not listed by Tektro, but google it and it's available all over. My experience with it, it wasn't so great either. Adequate, but not great, at least with Sun Tour XC Pro's. I switched to the RX4.1 inverse brake lever(Albatross bars), and it works fantastic. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Back to the original post of Ginz .. Tekto levers are fine. . . nothing wrong with them. Hmm, the VO model is Tektro FL730. The website said calipers or cantis. No mention of v-brakes. I honestly paid no attention to whether there was a v-brake setting. How does that normally work? Is there a switch or is there a different anchor point for the cable head? I should give it a look when i get home... [RBW] Re: Mtb Levers for Cantis
Ginz I've had levers with an adjuster dial that allows you to pull the cable head farther away from the pivot for V-brakes, or bring it closer to the pivot for calipers and cantis. I've had other levers with a spacer that you invert to do the same thing. Paul cross top levers actually have two positions for the pivot to achieve the same thing. So you'll probably see a single place to put the cable head. You either will or will not have a way to move that cable head further from the pivot. From the photo on the VO site, I'm guessing you will not find anything. Those levers do not look changeable. I think the description is correct on the VO site, and that they do not support V- brakes at all. But it won't hurt to look. Good luck! I use Cane Creek flat top levers (for canti's) on one bike. They work well and are solidly constructed. I use the Tektro levers a Surly Big Dummy, running v-brakes and discs. What would be a good vintage model to look for on eBay? Suntour? Shimano? If you can find a good pair of Dia Compes, I would go with them over Suntour or Shimano. Vintage Campy calipers tend not to stop your bike (but sure look good not doing anything). On the other hand, the levers are very good (if pricey). NOS Suntours are going for ridiculous money. Ridiculous. Curious. I guess absence makes the heart grow fonder. Shimano gets its share of lumps for drive trains. Their brakes and levers have always been very highly regarded, if perhaps a bit on the vanilla side of appearance. Probably easier to get spare parts for the Shimano than a Sun Tour. If you have any kind of Recyclery or similar used parts shop in your area, there should be a plethora of canti-compatible levers. With the introduction of v-brakes back in the mid-ninties, there was the constant sound of mtb canti levers hitting shop floors all over the country as folks flocked to upgrade. The only ones which can be problematic are the Servo-wave levers which used a camming system to increase pull as you squeezed the levers. They can be a little overwhelming. There weren't a lot of bad brake levers for canti's, and it's mostly a size and feel thing. XT's were superb, but it's hard to go too wrong. As has been pointed out, you want to make sure you are not using XT's for linear pull brakes. quoth Sheldon - Direct-pull brake levers used with any other type of brakes will feel nice and solid when you squeeze them, but due to their lower mechanical advantage you'll need to squeeze twice as hard to stop as you should, so unless you are a lightweight rider with gorilla-like paws, this combination isn't safe either. - Jim -- Jim Edgar cyclofi...@earthlink.net Cyclofiend Bicycle Photo Galleries - http://www.cyclofiend.com Current Classics - Cross Bikes Singlespeed - Working Bikes Workshops of the iBob's Send In Your Photos! - Here's how: http://www.cyclofiend.com/guidelines My nighttime attitude is anyone can run you down and get away with it. The first generation Shimano XT are good leverl. I've seen them at used bike shops a few times. The old Dia Compe's are still the bee's knees. Started with them and went back to them back in the day. Very lightweight and well made for the time. Still, wouldn't mind finding a pair of Magura or Tommaselli's cheap. The last set of the latter went for a mint on eBay. Both were modified motorcycle levers. Extra points if you find them with the mud boots. Again, though, Dia Compe are probably what I'd look for, if I needed another set. The pair that was on my Atlantis were really comfortable. The only Campy ones I remember were the plastic levers from the first run of mtb gear.
