[RBW] Re: Ram in the Dirt

2018-05-19 Thread Fullylugged
I rode my blue Ram on 30+ miles of gravel (out of a 54 mile ride) a few weeks
ago, on Panaracer 1 1/2" tires. I had too much air in them for gravel, but the
bike was still fine.

[RBW] Re: Ram in the Dirt

2018-05-17 Thread Matt
Patrick—Yes, I was the one that just sold the Bon Jons. The old Ram specs
chart I found said max 37mm so didn't want to chance it, but as soon as I
got them mounted it was clear the 38s would fit. (And of course right after
that I found a thread someone posted with the same experience... so it
goes...) I still have the stock Araya rims and that's what they're on.
They've got enough clearance that I've had no issues over 100+ miles with
them over pretty much every terrain—hard pack, loose gravely sand, some
single track (slowly) and narrow rocky and rooty trails. I know it's
cliche, but they've really remade this bike into something I didn't realize
it already was.

Everybody says Compass tires are great but they'll flat all day. And, of
course, I did 60+ miles through all the rough stuff only to get a flat
descending on a paved canyon highway. That said, though, it was dusk and I
was only using a headlamp so I didn't see the debris I hit, which was big
enough to feel, so with proper lights it likely wouldn't have happened and
two, the nail I took out was the same kind of nail I've pulled from my
Marathons on my commuter. So I'm chalking this one up as a fluke.

Mark—Oh, wow! My mom's family is from Newburgh/Pine Bush. I spent a lot of
time up there when I lived in the city; a lot of Metro North to Beacon.

Keith—I was the same way! A guy on that ride even asked me if I ever rode
my Ram because it was so pristine but that's only because all the miles on
it were paved (and I used to be a fastidious bike washer but now I'm over
it).

2018-05-17 Thread T Cal
Great photos, Matt. I live in Santa Monica and use my Hillborne on the
fire roads. My Rambouillet lives in the Owens Valley / Long Valley and
stays mostly on the road.

Keith -- I agree that we are spoiled in California. Even last year when
the ski mountain got 45 feet of snow, there were plenty of days when my
family went skiing while I went biking. This year there was less snow.
Still plenty of snow for skiing, but the riding all winter was quite good.

Matt,
Great photos. It is great how versatile Rivs are and how they can
adequately handle so many different riding conditions.
We are on day 5 of constant rain in the mid-Atlantic, so your sunny photos
are a nice antidote.
Thanks,
Erl

[RBW] Re: Ram in the Dirt

2018-05-17 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Lovely! Just got back from a rainy 6am jaunt. We had a crazy weather event
here in the Hudson Valley on Tuesday, and the damage is extreme: Many many
trees, power lines, roofs, etc. are down. We had to take different roads,
and on the path sections, I had to climb over or around at least a dozen
trees within a two-mile stretch. Massive trees were literally uprooted from
the earth. Governor Cuomo declared a state of emergency here. Most of
Newburgh is still without power, schools still closed. I'm heading to our
local farm later this afternoon to help rebuild the high tunnel. Pics:

Here is a photo (with similar pose & color scheme) of the type of bicycle
that inspired the Ram, my Takara Model 8, a mid-70s sport tourer from
Japan. It can take Compass Barlows with fenders; here it has Soma Supple
Vitesse SLs, 700 x 42. This morning it was shod with BG Rock and Road 700 x
43:
