I'll answer on list, just in case anybody read Patrick's inquiry and
is burning with curiosity, but please direct any further comments
about motor vehicles off-list, as they are off-topic.

I prefer riding bicycles to riding the scooter, but I try to ride the
scooter at least once every couple of weeks because it does not like
to sit too long without the engine being started.

The key advantage to the scooter is that I can go 10 or 20 miles on it
without showing up someplace all unpresentably sweaty. I find it
pretty uncomfortable if I have to spend an hour on it, though. The
other advantage to owning a scooter, as opposed to owning no motor
vehicle at all, is that employers and similar people perceive you as a
freak if you own no motor vehicle, and doubt your ability to carry out
your job if it requires you to travel; owning a motorbike mitigates
that perception. But I can't say I would miss it much if it were gone.

Working at a construction trailer 16 miles from home four days a week
until mid-May of this year, I rode the scooter to work only once, and
rode bicycles every other day.

Curious: how and where is that 50 cc scooter an advantage over a nice bike?

I should add that by "objectively funny" he sees true disjunctions or

vulgarity and that is one's right. (I'm vulgar, so it doesn't bother me.)

The biggest epic about me is how epically lost I have managed to get.
Bodies of water seem to really throw me in a tizzy. I am so used to
Lake Michigan being to the east, that whenever I come upon any large
body of water I make some automatic directional note, often to my
peril.

Just read that part of the book last night. He was referencing hand
built wheels versus the modern, machine made wheels. Specifically
mentioning the Mavic wheels which have known problems but no one has
challenged Mavic to fix.

While I believe this is entirely away from Rivendell, will add to it.
Just started the book yesterday. The first chapter was well written.
I have read his blog from time to time and occasionally do find it
humorous. Sometimes I find it mean spirited. But that's my way of
looking at things. More often than not, my own false sense of self
importance needs to be skewered. Including out and out mocking of my

[RBW] Re: Bike Snob in Rivendell!

2010-06-09 Thread Philip Williamson
Whoa!

I think the BSNYC audience is bike fanciers who spend too much time
online talking about bikes.

My online randonneur friends are all Golden Agers (like the book), and
the bikes I see at shows and in photo albums are, too. BikeSnob's
randonneur friends are probably the same. The carbon loving
randonneurs either have different bike forums, or do something else in
their off-time. I hear they exist, but they aren't real to me

I've never read BSNYC say or imply ANY of the shit you and Steve are
blaming him for. This whole thread is now an archive of findable
internet rhetoric characterizing randonneurs as nerds and retro-
grouches.

Dude, you can laugh at what you want, but don't be telling me what I
ought to find funny. I checked out a few of Bike Snobs post. I found
them overwritten and mean spirited, not funny at all. And this wasn't

Carrying a battery charged light is less technicallly advanced than
using a good dyno hub such as the SON. There is nothing new about
battery technology. Using energy generated by the ride itself is a
very sound solution.

But that is a poor example. A preference for durable wheels that don't
render the bike unrideable if a spoke breaks is an example of
appropriate technology, not of a distrust of recent technology.

A few years ago on the Covered Bridge Metric in Lancaster, PA I saw a
guy with a broken spoke on a new carbon race bike with low spoke count
boutique wheels sitting by the side of the road waiting for the sAG
wagon weeping. Sobbing. His ride was all over. The wheel had warped
so badly it wouldn't turn at all. And that's just a 62 mile ride. The
shortest brevet is twice that distance, and people expect to finish even
though a spoke might break.

What is "retro" about using appropriate technology? Is it "retro" to
use an electric steam iron rather than perhaps an iPad to iron a shirt?
In that example, "retro" would be a cast iron one you heated on a wood
burning stove.

"Retro" lighting would be JOS lights with incandescent bulbs powered by
a JOS sidewall generator -- all very highly prized stuff among the
Classic Rendezvous set, beautiful and oh so highly collectible. But
that's not what you're going to see on a brevet. SON dynamos and LED
lights are about as modern technology as you're going to find anywhere.

Even at that, sometimes the most "modern" isn't necessarily the most
effective. I submit that if you're going to have to pull a handgun in
earnest, one of your best choices is the 99 year old M1911A1 .45 cal
Browning-designed Colt automatic.

Exactly. Change for change sake is more marketing than anything else.

Case on point: When NASA was planning the Pathfinder, the tech wonks
came up with all sorts of new and unproven methods to safely land the
delicate equipment on Mars. In the end, they decided surrounding the
Pathfinder with a bunch of airbags to bounce it to a landing made the
most sense for a lot of reasons. Worked perfectly.

And in plain point of fact, for the performance envelope characteristic
of brevet riding, even NOS 531 in standard diameters and a fairly light
gauge is perfectly fine. Carbon per se doesn't give you any real
advantage other than light weight, and the significance of weight for
brevet riding is rather low. Bicycle design means a good deal more, and
in this respect most typical carbon road bikes fall short in that their
insufficient clearance prevents the use of fenders or wide tires, both
of which can make a huge difference in rider comfort on long rides in
difficult weather.

I completely agree. It simply makes the author look like an ignoramus.

But Rando's do not distrust recent technology. They use what works.

For instance, Steve points out above that Randos were early adopters
of the very modern and highly efficient generator hubs which are
gaining wider acceptance among cyclists. LED headlights common on
Rando biked may look similar to the lights used in the 50's, but the
better ones are designed to work as well as the best car or motorcycle
headligh.

Now the tech market is seeing their value, offering some wonderful
device chargers that hook up to the generator. Likewise, the Rando
community has pushed such things as GPS and happily use portable
computers and other communication devices.

I suspect the reference to recen technology is preference for steel.
This also is nonsense. Modern steel tubing is far more advanced than
it was 25 years ago. Steel manufacturing R&D is every bit as vibrant
as carbon fibre. Steel tubing will continue to improve. It is pure
ignorance to assume steel is outdated. In my opinion, ignorance is
not funny.

Perhaps a little better than a Star Trek reference.

Okay, since I offered up this tidbit, allow me to explicate. So, Bike
Snob is talking about retro grouches, their love of hand built wheels
with sensible spoke counts, distrust of recent technology, etc. He
then goes on to say (and I should have done a better job loosely
quoting him) that randonneuring and touring are retro-grouchery in
action (putting beliefs into practice.) THEN, he makes the comparison
to nerds attending Star Trek conventions, as well as Buddhists making
pilgrimages to the Bodhi tree, or some such. The point is that it's
not a direct, one to one comparison of retro grouches (or
randonneurs!) to nerds. Instead, it's a typical example of Bike
Snob's use of wildly unrelated, pop culture references to make his
points while having some fun. I get the impression he has a healthy
respect for the curmudgeonly RG getting the job done with 36 spokes.

That said, this certainly took us on an entertaining detour!

I like to think people smart enough to buy a Rando style bike are
smart enough to know Star Trek got Cosmology wrong on more levels than
a 10th Century priest.

Or are you saying BSNYC's audience for the joke was not Rando owners
but rather people too dense to understand both the Rando concept or
the many levels Star Trek failed to get things right?

If the latter, who wants that audience? At least WWF fans realize
half the joke is their own willing suspension of rational thought.

Must... not... reply...

You have to know your AUDIENCE to make a proper joke.

Birders and what-have-yous have zero cultural relevance. There are
very few stereotypes about bird-watchers. No one would know if the
comparison was apt or not, so they wouldn't know if it was funny. If
BSNYC likened randonneurs to birders... birders would actually become
culturally relevant.

I have hypertrophied sense of humor. I am a nerd.
It's obvious that BSNYC reads the same (and more!) bike forums that I
do, for the past dozen years or so. I think you need a grounding in
1990s rec.bicycles.tech to even know that Jobst Brandt is "the uber-
curmudgeon."

And before Jim moves Patrick and me to separate seats, I'm going to go
post a question about CR720s on a Quickbeam that maybe some of you can
answer.

No so much the poking fun, but the comparison.

Even an entry level understanding of cosmology is enough to show Star
Trek is an absurd impossible fantasy (eg., Paul Davies,'The Eerie
Silence') . On the other hand, a Rando style bike is arguably as good
a way to credit card tour as any.

If BSNYC wanted to compare Randos to nerds, he should have used nerds
with nerding after something outside of the realm of fantasy, such as
amateur astronomers or birders. Even trainspotters would have made
more sense.

It is statements like that from BSNYC that somewhat turn me off .
While I do not participate in Rando/Brevet (name your distance type
race here) I do like to credit card tour. Rando style bikes by far
are the best choice for the credit card tourer.

People have been flying to vacation destinations since the 1930s, and
taking ships to vacations since before bikes were invented. Does that
mean flying to your vacation or taking a cruise are retro-grouchy?

This, of course, gets very much to GP's point that BSNYC inevitably
has inspired wannabes who think name calling is all that is necessary
to match his level of success.

[RBW] Re: Bike Snob in Rivendell!

2010-06-08 Thread Jeff
He's coming to Austin a week from this Wednesday (thanks, Mellow
Johnny's!) There will be a ride from the shop (starting at 6) before
he does whatever he's going to do for us, so bring your Rivendells out
so we can all be righteously mocked. I'm reading the book at the
moment and one of my favorite bits is his take on the Retro Grouch.
He says randonneuring is retro-grouchery in action, like nerds going
to a Star Trek convention! While I love this sentiment, it's not
really the case in these parts. I see lots of titanium bikes with
questionable spoke counts and few others are doing it "Heine style."
Anyway, it's a fun read and much of it rings true.

but I found his short film review today very entertaining.

I had just joined the bicyclelifestyle group the day before the link

But I will buy the BikeSnob book from Rivendell! What a great review.
And a great blog. For the last four years, any time my wife hears me

[RBW] Re: Bike Snob in Rivendell!

2010-06-07 Thread Mike
Bike Snob is Powell's guest blogger this week:

http://www.powells.com/blog/?author=945

I love this: "Last October, I was fortunate enough to visit Portland,
the home of Powell's, and I wrote an article about my trip in some
magazine that appeals to the kinds of people who drive Subarus and who
wear climbing apparel and "technical footwear" to Whole Foods. "

I don't regularly follow his blog although I'm not sure why. I kinda
prefer http://allhailtheblackmarket.com/.

Bike Snob will be at Powell's later this month, perhaps I'll go see
him. I'll definitely pick-up the book.

I followed the blog at first. It got repetitive and I lost interest.
Weiss is a good writer. I will check the reviews. If the book goes
beyond the blog, should be worth reading. Will probably wait for a
