Something about silicon reminds me of grabbing hold a squid in rigger. I
just don't find it a pleasant experience. It's too squishy (not enough
feedback from the bars) and unbreathable. What's the attraction? Now cork,
cotton tape, and some shellac, I'm a happy lad.

For what it's worth, Jeff is a fan of cork grips and stocks those:
*Grips *
I stock cork grips (130mm long and 35.5mm thick in the middle) – these are
very light at 26 grams a pair and firm yet shock absorbing. They are
covered on the ends to keep water out and best when used in combination
By the way, I have over 5000 miles on mine and they still look good. I
have shellaced them a time or two. It only takes a second and it keeps
them clean.

My daughters are in bed after a long Christmas day. Now I can reply. I have
Riv cork on three bikes, a Hunqapillar, and two Bridgestone MB3s. The Hunqa
has standard cork as does my wife's MB3. My MB3 has BES, and twined notched
cork. Like you I shellac the cork, I have learned to not lightly
I like cork grips, but they get dirty quick and I had more than a few sets
break on me.

ESI grips are comfortable, very tough (almost too tough - even without
adhesive, they are a chore to remove), and clean easy. Black, silver, and
maybe white are
Plus 1 on the Brooks Plump/Fat grips. I have them on my S1 with Dove bars,
and they are the comfiest feeling thing I've had under my hands yet. I have
tried the Riv-Cork and the Ergon but much prefer the Brooks. Much more
expensive but if the price isn't too much a consideration …
On Sunday,
I had the brooks plump, they were nice but not compatible with bar ends so
they went to a better home.

I have cork w/ bar ends on a 'bars and cloth tape on some Bosco's. Both
shellac'ed which helps tremendously with the dirt and water. I tried ergots,
which w/ the sweep seemed to work better inverted with the extra part faced
inward. They were fine, but not necessary. The shellac'ed cork does
Brooks leather grips. Feel nice, grip well and age well. Expensive but
they last. Tim Petersen

For folks using Albatross bars, and I guess Boscos, what grips are you

Cork grips with bar end shifters on the Hillborne and cork with
thumbies on the new (to me) Atlantis. The bar end grips have the
groove for the shifter cable and twine wrap holding the cable to the
grips. The twine is the only thing I shellac - the cork cleans easily.

I prefer taping the A. bars to using grips myself because there are so many
hand positions with that bar.

I use the velo orange leather bar wrap. I back wrap it with standard cloth
tape. What a pain to wrap and sew it up but it looks the business.

I prefer the appearance of cork grips, but the last time I used them
on A bars, my hand would rest into the notch (median?) between the
fleshy parts of the palm, causing repeated discomfort.
Maybe I should try again -- been a couple years, and the bar position
has migrated.
