For myself, I believe replacing the brake cable housing was necessary. The brakes worked before. The bike stopped when needed. I never felt they were failing. But I wasn't happy with the feel of the brakes. Let's just say they did not feel satisfactory to me. My fix can't be classified as

I'll second that. I swapped out my brake housing as well. Don't remember exactly which housing it is, but it's what my local bike shop has a spool of. Much improved performance. No squish. I also swapped in some koolstop pads. Same stock v-brakes. They work fine for me. On Wed, May 25, 2016 at

The new brakes feel much better in my hand, but the stock ones stopped the bike just fine. The biggest single improvement was the brake housing. I tried re-using the stock housing, and the rear brake was still "pretty darn squishy", more squishy than I was willing to tolerate from XTR.
