Me, I am still of mixed minds. (Howzat for a weird metaphor.) On the
one hand, it is, both overall one of the better compromises for on-
and off-road; the hoods are better than those of the 46 cm Noodles
(which were too damn' wide) and the hooks, tho' even wider, are as
comfortable because so much nearer and shallower. Compared to 42 cm
Noodles, the Midge is as comfortable on the hoods (this is where, for

width and, also, because you simply can't set up the hooks to be
parallel to the ground: they are far too shallow and short.

OTOH, the 42 Noodles were useless on anything except firm surfaces,
while the Midge is wide enough even at the hoods to offer considerable
leverage and, in the hooks, gives all the control you need.

My problems with the Midge are (1) the great width in the hooks and
 (2) how the slanted hooks make my very sensitive left palm suffer.
This last may be helped with even more added padding. As to the first,
I am wondering if I should lower the bar (currently ~2 cm above
saddle) a cm or two and use the hooks, not the hoods, as the cruising
position. But this means that, off road, the hooks will be hard to use
on steep drop-offs where you need maximum grip and braking.

Perhaps the solution is to have a separate off-road bike that I can
set up without any compromise for road riding ...

[RBW] Re: Midge, again

2013-03-07 Thread iamkeith
Matt, that is OUTSTANDING!

It's crazy to me how there are so many dirt drop and alt bars out
there, with new ones coming out seemingly all the time, and yet how
none of them seem to be able to get it just right. I know this is
highly subjective and personal but, with the exception of width
which might depend on an individual rider's build, it doesn't seem
like you should have to compromise one obviously good feature to
accommodate another. Yet the options are always either: too narrow on
top to give you an upper hand position (old WTB and 3TTT, etc.), too
deep of a drop to the lower sections for hard-core off-road riding by
people without racer physique (Nitto, etc.), way more flare and width
than you actually need at the ends for ergonomics and wrist clearance
sake (Woodchipper, etc.), too angled at the bend to make the hoods
comfortable (Origin 8 Gary, etc.), too short in the extensions to give
you a full hand grip (Midge, etc), available only for oversize stem
clamps (Ragely Luxy, Soma Junebug, etc), unable to accommodate bar-end
shifters (new WTB Mountain Road, etc.), etc., etc.

(Not to mention. If you're only going to offer a component in one
color, it should be polished SILVER, not black, duh.)

I think YOU may have almost created the perfect bar though. I'd love
to hear your impressions and some more photos, after you put some time
on them. On the other hand, I completely agree that the 48cm Noodles
actually are almost perfect as they are. The only reason I even keep
trying to find something else is because having different bars helps
me justify owning multiple, otherwise redundant bikes - a'la Sheldon
philosophy.

[RBW] Re: Midge, again

2013-03-07 Thread Philip Williamson
That is a great mod. Without bar-end shifters, Midges are too short for my
best comfort. With bar-end shifters in, they're fine. If I ran the zoo, I
would have designed them with an extra inch or so on each side, with
engraved markings for the owners to chop them shorter.

I think similarly to you, I liked the Midge's hoods, but wasn't so keen on
their drop position. The grips were too short and my wrists were really
uncomfortable with their outward flare. I've been riding 46cm and 48cm
Noodles, which I like a lot, esp. the 48's, and shelved the Midges.

Long story short, a millwright at work very kindly helped me modify 'em.
He spun off some aluminum plugs (I think 5cm long) to extend the grip
section and suggested I try wrapping a loop of rope around the bar ends and
spinning a stick/screwdriver in between them to pull in the flare.

Here the pictures, before and after bar tape. The one with colourful bar

[RBW] Re: Midge, again

2013-03-07 Thread Philip Williamson
My mileage varies. I think the old WTB bars are perfect, and the Midges are
quite good. I like the flare - that's the best feature of these bars. The
width on the tops is fine for me, but I don't ride on the tops. I don't
like Noodles, so I think that might be a watershed for people.

width and, also, because you simply can't set up the hooks to be
parallel to the ground: they are far too shallow and short.

For many years now I have lust in my heart for the NLA Lynskey Ti Vaya.

Noodles, the Midge is as comfortable on the hoods (this is where, for
me, the Midge shines) but considerably less so in the hooks -- again,
width and, also, because you simply can't set up the hooks to be

[RBW] Re: Midge, again

2013-03-06 Thread iamkeith
I've been thinking about the midge for an off-road bar lately too. In
some ways it seems almost perfect, but my problem is that the
short lower drop extensions seem way too short to fit my hands
securely. So I found a product called Terminators from Control
Tech ( http://www.controltechbikes.com/english/examples/a_endplugs.php
) that might fix THAT problem by adding length, but at the expense of
being able to use bar end shifters. So then you'd have to use
brifters or, my favorite, Take-Offs by Kelly (
http://kellybike.com/2nd_xtra_takeoff.html
) with silver shifters. I'm just not sure the later option would work
due to the angled brake lever mounting position. I'd sure love it if
you would try this combination out and report back, though! ;-)
