I can tell you, they do a meticulous packing job. Everything is neatly
stowed and very well-protected and I am sure every bike that Rivendell
ships gets their A-class packing job. All 3 of my bikes were very carefully
packed; it's a Riv signature

I don't think Riv could dream of adding shipping labor into the price of frames
and bikes. Grant has been vocal about trying to keep the prices manageable
while still actually making money off them since, like, 1994. I feel confident
that if I pick up a bike in Walnut Creek, I'm not paying a
I suppose I took the shipping price too literal compared to another online
store where I figure I'm paying postage and that's essentially it. Packing is a
pain no doubt, I thought those costs may be accounted for in item prices to
some degree as well. I typically use shipbikes.com and have
Agreed about Riv's shipping cost. I always cringe a bit when I sell a bike and
know it's gotta be shipped, it's a fair amount of work. In fact after a few DIY
bike boxing adventures I don't / wont do it myself any more. I now take it to
the bike shop who charges 60$. They do a good job or I
Correct again. It takes me every bit of 2 hours to pack a bike, in fact I
don't think I can do it in two hours and I've done it alot, plus
materials, chasing down a box and varios other things to make it work right.
Rivs prices are not out of line the least bit IMO.

Correct, us private sellers aren't charging labor for packing a bike 'cause
we're not trying to run a business and pay people.

Rivendell has to buy the box and other supplies and pay a person a decent wage
to do the work. They probably also insure the bike which adds considerable
cost. I just shipped a bike with BikeFlights from ND to VA and the cost with
insurance was $124. That was using the box from Riv and all
Then why can I ship a bike for $100 or less and it costs $170 from Riv? Honest
question, no snark.

I suspect that discount associated with a corporate account is tied to the
amount of volume that business does with the carrier. The more volume,

I'm not surprised. It's really handy to input all the measurements and
weight, print a label, and schedule a pickup or drop off at the office.
it's all I use
