Thanks, Reid. I have two wheelsets for the Sam for quick changeovers. One 36
hole for dirt and commuting and one 32 hole for road riding. I've used Mondial
40's with fenders (p50s, I think) for commuting and Smart Sams in the summer
without fenders for fun. The lighter wheelset has a set of
Thanks John! Were you running the smart sams in the later photos with fenders,
or was that another tire?
Cool setup by the way! Loving how versatile the Sam seems to be.

If you go with 45 Smart Sams, you definitely have to lose the fenders. In
fact, I replaced my double kickstand with a single because the Smart Sams
rubbed slightly on the kickstand when I pedaled hard. Here's a

Reid,
I spent a season riding the very rooty and rocky trails here in MD on my
Sam. I was definitely "underbiking," but it was a lot of fun, and I never
even once had to fix a flat. Part of that "luck" is due to the fact that I
don't mind walking, and I pick my way down hills rather than bomb
Hi Phillip,
I was definitely eyeing your listing! You pretty much nailed both the potential
deal breakers and the things that caught my eye. I'll keep mulling it over, but
I'm suspecting that the drops/single speed will indeed be what gives me pause.
Thanks for the response though!

Thanks for all the input folks, it's given me plenty to think on. I did have a
hard tail (too small) for a while and ventured out on the Austin trails, some
of which are indeed a little too interesting for my taste.
The idea of a new wheelset for the Sam is a good one (cheaper than a new bike,
Hi Reid,
I'm selling an XL Singular Gryphon. It's a big bike - the only one I've
ever seen where "XL" meant "XL."

Possible deal breakers for you:

I'll echo what others have said about using the Sam. As long as you're not
doing rocky/rutty single track it can take it. I built mine up
specifically to do road and trail duty.
Maybe pick up another wheelset and put some fat knobby tires and a cassette
on it for offroad duty. It's cheaper
Reid,
I agree with Patrick. I have used my Sam on trails around the bay area and it
tends to feel similar to my rigid mtb days in the '80's with a little more bb
drop. Conway was selling a set of new Smart Sams for $60
(https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/d6TmbLyGdkg).
My advice, if you haven't already scouted out the trails you want to ride
and concluded otherwise for yourself, is to pick up a beater 80s or 90s MTB
and try the trails before you invest in a fully rigid trail bike for
Austin. Most (all?) of the fun trails are full of limestone. It's rough on
Have you tried riding trails with your Sam? You might be amazed. IF nothing
else, it gets you out there, learning trail skills, riding, while you find
your Hunq.
With abandon,
Patrick
