Pudge, my old Raleigh has the Weinmann 750 rear (650 front), and my pads
are bottomed out in those on 27 rims. It doesn't even have the 4mm pad
adjustment that would be enough for 700c. Not that I'm complaining, in our
30-mi ride last weekend, my 30-y-o Zeus hubs on Rigida rims were
Honestly three are very few tire options for a 27 size. Mostly basic
tires is all there is.

It's true the selection is limited, but a Pasela is a rather
satisfactory tire, actually a good bit above mostly basic and the

I second or third the Pasela's. I have them in 27 x 1 1/4 (630-32) and like
them better than the 700-35 Pasela's. Looked at a lot of tires before I bought
them and these are keepers.

The economic turmoil in 2008 caused a 27 tire shortage. I source tires from 5
or 6 different distributors, and nobody had any 27 tires of any kind during
the summer. NYT had a 27 tire review in the style section that year, a nod to
all the old bikes coming out of hibernation. After that, the 27
Gotta disagree with the very few 27 tire options argument, I have fixed
up about a dozen old 10 speeds in the last couple years and there are
actually plenty of options.
For the most part you have 3 sizes to choose from*:
- 27 x 1 1/8 a 28c equivalent
- 27 x 1 1/4 a 32c equivalent

Anyone remember the IRC 27's? I still have a good Road Winner Duro II
(I think that's the name), Japanese, really light yet cheap. They used
to be standbys in the Nashbar catalog. I'll be taking it off an old
bike and will install it on the current beater.
