A surprise resolution to this thread! I just ordered the blue 59 Frank Jones Sr that went on the 'web specials' today. Huh. I removed CR720s, and installed CX50s. I bend-fudged the arms a bit, since the rack had been repaired, but everything lined up perfectly, including the fender drilling to the M12 mount. The Wald was welded right to the rack, too, which is pretty ratrod couture. I do not use the double-ended bolts, I just bolt the rack arms to the cantis with the normal canti bolt. It works for me. Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Racking
Thank you all for all the detailed recommendations and thoughts! Tough decisions on this little but important aspect of the build. :) Bill: thanks for cautioning the M12 with those brake types. I wonder if I could mabe get it to work by 'cold setting' the rack like so? https://justinvelo.com/2015/06/16/nitto-m12-front-rack-paul-components-rack-adapter/ Deacon Patrick: "why not rear rack?" is a good question. That works just fine, although I much prefer the easy quickness of items on the front of the bike. Most of my trips are short commutes around town, and I like the flow and flexibility of front baskets/bags vs. panniers or saddlebags. I'm wondering if the less-aesthetically-satisfying-but-probably-is-just-fine option of the 'Wald Bosco Basket' might be an acceptable compromise. I'm also going to look into handlebar-mounted bag options to see if they'd maybe work instead of a basket. [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Racking
I agree with Bill, that an M12 and Paul brakes is sub-optimal. I would recommend the Shimano CX-50 brakes from Rivendell over the Tektro CR720s. I had the Tektros and didn't care for them; I recently installed the CX-50s and like them a lot. Personal preferences. I do have Paul brakes on another bike, and Avid Ultimates in the "nicer parts" bin. Both have springs on the front of the brake that push the rack mount out a lot. Enough that if I wanted to use them on the Quickbeam, I would need to space out the crown-mounting, and re-drill the fender where it mounts to the rack. I did break a Nitto M12 at the crown bolt, but it took 13 years and a bad commute where someone slammed the bus tray (bikes go into sliding rack in the bus cargo bay) on my bike. tl;dr: Pick different brakes or a different rack setup. For me, the basket on canti-rack is this quintessential Quickbeam portage solution, so I chose different brakes. Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Racking
Not heresy by me; before I got Chauncey Matthews to make custom racks for me, the Tubus Fly and Ortliebs were my carriage solution of choice. Both brands make wonderful products at reasonable prices, IMO. I agree that there is nothing as convenient for carrying things than a large front basket but IME (I've tried 2 baskets, one the Newsboy) the proportion between weight of the setup (particularly if you put the basket on a rack) to the weight of possible load is far less than alternatives; and this doesn't include any effect on handling. This is probably heresy... but I'd install a Tubus rear rack and use an Ortlieb roller classic pannier. Why carry weight high on the front when you can carry low on the back? [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Racking
Nathan, If you decide to ignore Bills advice (and to be honest if i had read this before thinking about what you are i may have not gone thru with my purchase) and try to make it work with the Pauls, I have an M12 and the requisite Pauls Adaptor Nuts in my parts box. I was thinking of doing this exact thing, but then i thought thru how i used my QB, and i need/often carry way more load then would work on an M12. If the load requirements are ok with you, i've seen this done before (though not on a QB) FWIW, i use a Nitto Mini Front + p-clamps, yes the p-clamps are ugly but they work, and it lets me run the giant nitto platrack. If you still want to try it, send me a direct message and we can work out a deal for the M12 + racknuts.
