Re: [RBW] Re: Saluki For Sale... Not Mine

2022-08-03 Thread Keith Weaver
I have been seeing this Saluki pop up on my regular Rivendell searchtempest
survey of nearby craigslist ads. See the ad here:
https://reno.craigslist.org/bik/d/reno-rivendell-saluki/7512953852.html. I
live in Reno, I'm available to help if anyone wants to buy this and finds
the seller doesn't want to deal with shipping.

Cheers,
Keith

Yeah no kidding. That's a screaming deal on a bike that's that sought

Excellent to hear it's working out as you'd hoped! Looking forward to more
photos and ride reports as spring and summer approach.

Bleriots rarely come up for sale as well. My first Saluki, the 56cm that
was too large was green with sidepulls which I prefer but happy to have
gotten any Saluki. I prefer sidepulls due to hand issues and I find them
easier to open up to remove a ties. This was my first one…. I hope it is

Thanks Rich. I wasn’t sure if the bags would work when I got the frame but

one difference is that when I put the seat on this (which was always
attached to the seatpost from the Bleriot the setback is a bit more). I
always ride with my seat set levels as this just works for me.I really
 have
no idea why it felt so good but it had me questioning the Hillborne which
always felt more sure footed than the Bleriot, but I will ride that after
awhile on this one and see. After riding the Hillborne on rollers all
winter the muscles that were not used are letting themselves be known. I
 am
very pleased that I bought this frame, just lovely in every way.

2022-03-19 Thread Matt Beecher
Hi Joel,

I've had similar requests to keep others in mind if I sell mine, but I
cannot imagine letting it go.

https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/VlLOB0qumr0

I'm a bit curious how many were made, but always assumed they rarely go up
for sale because they are spectacular bikes.

Best regards,
Matt in Oswego, IL

I don't know about Kojaks, but Paselas are available in 650b x 42mm. I don't
think there is a 38mm version, but I could be wrong.

FWIW, if you want inexpensive tire, IME Kojaks are better-- rolling; well,
lets say Kojaks roll fully as well; certainly better in flat resistance and
longevity -- than Paselas.

Well, if they don't fit the budget there are some decent choices at more
affordable prices.  I just bought a pair of 700x32C wire bead Paselas

Thanks Chris and Erl!

Hey Steve, yeah I have a number of now empty patch kits to attest to my
poor skill in patching. Of all the things to struggle with... my success
rate is extremely poor. especially with glass punctures it should be
pretty easy. I've read that the Rema Tip Top stuff is pretty good but
haven't tried it.

2017-10-03 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Thanks Bill - the frame and fenders were powdercoated at the same time. No
regrets there whatsoever, I love the matched fenders.

Thanks Kieran - yes those are the Paul Stoplights, took me a bit of
fiddling last time I changed handlebars to get them where I wanted but I
love the look and the power/modulation is pretty good right now. No
weeping at all from the EL sidewall's, these are the new TL versions
though. When I went tubeless on the non TL SBH EL's the sidewalls 'wept'
orange seal pretty impressively so there is a definite change to the casing.

The Bleriot's have single-tapered seat stays. Below is a link to the

2017-09-29 Thread Steve Palincsar
No.  This was entirely on pavement, even the part down the farm road in
the Amish area, but even disregarding pavement fenders like this do a
great job keeping the bike clean.  And that's especially important if
you're riding in area where there are many horse drawn vehicles like the
one where these photos were taken, in Maryland's St Marys County.  These
photos were all taken on the same ride (indeed, on the same road) as the
one featuring the Saluki.

Love those honking fat tires.  Oodles of comfort and as fast as you
want too.

Yes indeed, those tires are very comfortable.  And in rural areas, high
pressure narrow racing tires just don't get on all that pleasantly with
farm roads, which are generally paved with coarse materials like
chipseal, but also the iron shod horses' hooves and the steel tires on
the the buggy wheels really tear up the pavement.

I guess only restriction is tire size the Saluki probably has the
Roadeo beat. But other than that the Roadeo should be the more
exhilerating ride, in theory.

Only "probably"?  Per https://www.rivbike.com/products/roadeo "FOR
SURE: The Jack Brown, which is NOMINALLY 33.333mm wide on most
rims--but that's irrelevant, remember?--measures about 700mm on a 24mm
rim. It's the fattest unfendered tire we can categorically commit to
fitting the ROADEO fork. /If you want fenders also, best limit the
tire to 682mm height...which will be about a 28./"   I ran 650Bx42mm
Grand Bois Hetres with fenders on my Saluki.  That is a huge
difference, lum gim.

Bigger than huge.  Monstro Gigantor.  Let's compare a Range Rover with
an Aston Martin, why don't we. I can see plenty of reasons why you
might want to have both, but I can't see any reason to think the two
would really be interchangeable.

2017-09-28 Thread Fullylugged
Saluki has nice Japanese tubing, HT TT and DT, and yes double taper stays. Made
in Japan. Hilsen is made of different tubing and made in WI. Bleriot is made of
Taiwanese tubing, in Taiwan and the lugs and details while nice are not as nice
as Saluki/Hilsen. The idea was to make a great country bike at a lower price
point. Analogous to the more recent Sam Hillbornes. The QBP thing went astray
when the frames started showing up for cheap on Ebay. People who have Bleriots
seem to like them. I sold my Saluki because I wasn't doing country style riding
much and someone else might like to have it instead. It was a nice bike though.

2017-09-28 Thread John A. Bennett
Dear Dave,

I'm a little rusty of the Bleriot specs. It was a very limited offering,
done in conjunction with QBP, and yes, made in Taiwan.

Riv originally intended the decals/HB/name for another model, but when the
QBP thing came together, it was decided to use them for the Bleriot.

Jon Grant, who also did the Saluki artwork (and, coincidentally, Rivelo's
logo), designed the Bleriot decals and head badge.

All I can remember today

2017-09-28 Thread Hugh Smitham
Hi sky,

The differences between the 56cm Salulki and 56cm Hilsen are purely
aesthetic for me. I like the head badge better and I know it's a quibbly
point but I prefer canti posts vs caliper brakes. I realize I could have
had all this done on my Hilsen but I felt it was a tad too large for me and
felt it was easier to sell and consider a different path. James, I think
this answers your question. It was a 58cm (650b).

John, thanks for the inside scoop. So yeah the Saluki had a brief span
before the Hilsen badging took over which answers my question about why so
few pop up.

[RBW] Re: Saluki.

2017-09-28 Thread John A. Bennett
Salukis were originally available/built in sizes 47cm to 62cm, starting in
2005.

When Rivendell wanted to make a bike with similar geometry and qualities
(room for bigger tires and fenders, etc.), but in larger sizes, the A.
Homer Hilsen was born.

Because bikes bigger than 62cm with 650B wheels didn't seem like a good
idea, the A. Homer Hilsen was first offered as "the 700c version of the
Saluki."

When Rivendell realized that having two bikes that were, for all intents &
purposes, "the same," the Saluki name was retired, and all existing (and
future) frames became A. Homer Hilsens.

John, late of Rivendell, currently of Rivelo, and rider of 62cm Saluki

Hugh, I've wondered the same thing. I'd be interested in a 60cm or 61cm

seen one become available since I started watching. I have a 700c Hilsen

fatter tires on it. I agree with Sky that the Hilsen and Saluki are
identical if they're both 650b, but in my size the wheel sizes differ.

I recall a post from a few months ago in which someone described a NOS
frame they'd bought from Rivendell that wasn't labeled, and Riv told her
that it was a Saluki or Hilsen, take your pick because they're the same.
If that came from Riv than it's proof enough to me that the models are the

2017-08-08 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I really 42mm GB EL Hetres with the sks fenders for a while. Tight but
manageable. I've been running the 1.75" parimotos for about 2 years now under
berthoud steel fenders and want to compass tires next... I saw the new BSP 42's
are going to be wider and tube less compatible which has me worried about
space. I may try it anyway, I think the critical spot is at the chainstay yoke
and I could probably take a Dremel to the fender there and open up some room.

If not maybe I'll go back to the Hetres. The parimotos are fine but don't have
that 'magic'... (Or amazing marketing)

When I do it I'll share pictures. My A23 rims are supposedly also tubeless
ready so I might mess around with that to.

Michael,

Compass has just increased their 42mm tire by 1.5mm so the fit will only
get tighter. You might want to try some older ones. The 1.75" Pari-moto is
measuring between 40-41mm for most people on a rim like the synergy.

[RBW] Re: Saluki Links

2017-08-03 Thread Fullylugged
Saluki was made In Osaka by Toyo. Hilsens are made in WI by Waterford. GP has
said build quality is equal at both places back when some frames were coming
from both places, but the tubing used is different in each location. Saluki
used high quality Japanese tubing. I don't know what tubing W'Ford has these
days, since True Temper no longer supplies bike tubes. I'm sure it's good, but
that might lead to some variation in the feel of the bike. IIRC, the TT and DT
on Saluki (and Rambouillet) were heat treated while the rest of the tubes were
not. Don't know about current Hilsen. Not sure I could tell even there is a
difference! Tires might affect the feel more.

Let us know how your bike odyssey goes.

2015-06-03 Thread Surlyprof
My wife had bought a dedicated dog trailer with the hopes of hauling one of
our dogs around. Both dogs hated it. It was like we had bought a medieval
torture device. The one doesn't like riding in the car, so that wasn't a
surprise. But, the other loves riding in the car and she hated it as well.
Not sure why. Might have been the bouncey-ness of the ride. $200 of
trying netted us $50 on CL. Live and learn. I'd try to buy used.

[RBW] Re: Saluki - Dog Trailers?

2015-06-02 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Jim,
I have used my AHH and Hunqapillar to tow a Burley trailer with kids. Kids
and toys probably weighed 60# or 70# (on the Hunqapillar). For AHH, I only
loaded it with one child-- probably 30#.

There are limitations to trailers and carrying live weight.

The Burley trailer is a two-wheeled trailer. From what I can see, the
Doggyride is also two wheeled. Though stable for loading, it can be tipped
when going over uneven ground or taking a turn too quickly. If you're going
on trails, be mindful of rocks and logs. It looks like the wheels on the
Doggyride don't have bumpers-- narrow pathways (e.g., between trees on a
trail or bollards on a path) could be problematic if the wheel strikes it.

Kids and dogs moving in a trailer can influence the handling of the bike.
It depends on the weight and how much they're moving around.

good luck,
Shoji

[RBW] Re: Saluki on it's way back

2015-05-26 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Thanks Dave, Shoji, Erl and Steve!

First commute on the re-built Saluki this morning went great. Glorious
weather, a warm afternoon but I had a late work release anyway. The bike
did great, the fenders and Bruce Gordon racks were flawless. I'm pretty
stoked about the build and bummed I won't be able to ride in the next two
days. Friday here I come!

The Saluki should get a test roll around the neighborhood later tonight.
I've got the HS, BB, crankset and brake calipers installed so far... once
I harvest the saddle/post, albatross bars and pedals off the XO-3 I'll be
back in business.

I held up the old fork (w/ the original nice green paint) up to the new one
a minute ago and they are pretty close actually. Just that the new coat
has a dull finish instead of sparkling.

I'd love to see some pic's of the Purple People Eater sometime!

Yes, if you loose the fork crown bolt for some reason and your rack is
loaded the only place for it to go is forward/down onto the wheel or onto
the ground (depending on the strut length). Both of those have a fully
enclosed hole on the fork crown tab though. The Berthoud had a curious
feature where the fork crown tab just had a 'U' to house the bolt. With
that 'U' it meant that even a loose fork crown bolt and not full removal
could result in the rack falling forward.

Lot's of people have used that Berthoud rack w/o problems I'm sure, I did
for nearly a year. If you check your hardware pre-ride and add a safety
like the Riv toe strap idea I think it's probably good to go.

A Canti stud rack like the M-12 seems to have less potential for something
going wrong in my opinion.

Yes, there is little to go wrong with the M-12. No moving parts. It's the

[RBW] Re: Saluki on it's way back

2015-05-18 Thread blakcloud
I am glad to hear you survived the accident. I had something similar with a
fully loaded porteur rack with Wald basket break at the springboard. I was
lucky and stayed upright as my bike was like a plow. Then I saw a trick on
the Riv site of putting a toe strap around the rack and the head tube. This
worked great when the springboard broke a second time and the strapped held
it in place. At that point I got rid of both my porteur racks.

As for your new build, I see you are using a single ring, are you going
with nine in the back? Second question, are you going to use a chain keeper
to minimize any chain drops of the front?

Looking forward to seeing your final build.

Re: [RBW] Re: Saluki on it's way back

2015-05-18 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Blakcloud - I've seen that toe strap idea on Riv's site as well and think
it's a good one. The Berthoud rack was kind of like a Nitto R-14 but for
the front so when it was no longer attached to the fork crown it naturally
was able to swing down/forward. I'll not use one like that again.
Rigid/non-hinged support struts and a fork crown thru bolt that is integral
to the rack are requirements as far as I'm concerned now. As for the
single ring, I'm going 8 speed in the back, cheap chains and cassettes,
easier friction shifting and I don't miss the extra gear. I didn't notice
a problem w/ chain keeping once I went to the WI SS ring, it's not one of
the newer 'wide-narrow' versions but I'll probably skip the chain keeper
unless it becomes a problem.

Thanks Erl and Patrick!
