Although, according to Wikipedia and several other sources, Under the Berne
Convention, copyrights for creative
workshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_works do not have to be asserted
or declared, as they are automatically in force at creation: an author need not
register or apply for a
While all of that may be true, it is irrelevant to the argument I was making.
I was not saying anything about assuming whether or not a resource IS under
copyright. We're talking about library bibliographic metadata here. What I
meant was that I would not assume any particular copyright
Yes, I wasn't sure if it was relevant or not. Just wanted to point it out in
case it made a difference in this case. I was pretty sure I'd quickly learn its
applicability.

One could make the argument, however, that while it is a bad idea to include
information not in the resource in the manifestation record, it may be very
welcome in the work records (and both are bibliographic description).

The RDA Update History seems not to be complete. Haven't there been several
updates to the content since it was published in June 2010? There is only one
update in the Update History, and that is dated April 2012. It is *very*
helpful to have a complete history of the updates, to help
I agree

I apologize if this is a dumb question, but is there a concrete definition
for what a publisher is or does, or what constitutes the act of
publishing or publication?
The RDA Glossary states that a publisher is A person, family, or corporate
body responsible for publishing, releasing, or issuing a
I also happened to notice that yesterday Kevin, and I'm glad you bring it
up. The latest update was to be May 14th, and I even received an e-mail
from the Toolkit on May 13th announcing the May 14th update, but my
Toolkit also shows the latest update as April 2012. However I do notice
that when
Forgot to say that I've reported both the AACR2 Index issue and the LC-PCC
PS icon issue to the Toolkit, and supposedly they are working on it.
Neither has been remedied as of today.

My reasoning is that there must *be* a reason why we *are* told to guess a
place and date, and not told to guess a publication, in both AACR and RDA.
So maybe we need to think through the purpose of the publication data.
If a resource is published, we always have a publication statement, of some
One has to remember that RDA is *dynamic*. Ahem.

There are two categories of changes in the RDA content of the RDA Toolkit:
-- updates: major changes resulting from approved proposals to the JSC;
-- releases: minor changes resulting from corrections and Fast Track
entries handled by the JSC.
So far, there has been only one update of the RDA
I have a question that applies to the publisher as well. If a book lists
a publisher that is an imprint of another do you put the publisher, the
main publisher or both. eg. Gallery Books is a division of Simon
Schuster Inc. what do I use as the publisher? Thanks.

Thanks, Judy! I'd totally forgotten about the difference between RDA updates
and RDA Toolkit releases. Makes complete sense to me now.
I agree that noting every minor change under RDA Update History would end up
getting to be quite unwieldy. But I do wonder if it might perhaps be helpful
to
According to RDA 2.8.1.4, you transcribe whatever appears on the source of
information. If both the main publisher and the imprint appear, you transcribe
both, unless you have chosen to follow the option that allows omitting levels
in a corporate hierarchy that are not required to identify the
I'm cataloguing a lot of PDF files in my library. I want to make it easy for
users to see the size of the documents. This is what I am thinking of doing in
the 300 and 347 fields. The 347 field is hidden from the user so I want the
file size also showing in the 300 field. I wasn't sure if this
Kyley Felix posted:
300 (10 a) 1 online resource (v, 23 pages), 840 KB : (20 b) text file, PDF.
We would have in an RDA record:
300 $a1 PDF (v, 23 pages) :$c840 KB
We find this simpler and easier to understand.
Field 338 already has online resource, so we see no need to repeat
it; 336
