Hi August,
I misunderstood James' question a bit at first, but having reread it I
would agree that shingles are still subject to softening and potential
tearing when they are new and the time is hot. I used to judge the relative
success of our roof protection measures by the amount of aggregate
People say never walk on a wet metal roof, but many metal roofs up to 6 in
12 pitch are stickier when wet with vibram soles than when they dry. I find
this to be the case especially with new er Kynar finished roofs.
I wish I had a shoe closet in my truck sometimes.

Foam soles for both asphalt and metal- we always use them on asphalt shingles
over 5/12 for grip, also when outdoor temps hit 80’s for roof protection and on
every metal roof for same reasons. We get so much pollen here, the roofs turn
yellow, so even a 2/12’s painted metal roof is like

Jeremy,
I think the strap-on ones you’re referring too are Korkers (sp?). They have a
very strong Velcro bottom that you can change out from foam, a cleat (with
little metal spikes that’s great for cedar or ice, and maybe a felt?
Yes, they are kind of big and klunky.

Jeremy,
Are you saying the foam soles are great for metal roofs or are you talking
about the SteelWalker magnetic boots from Cougar Paws?

I wore cougar paws for many years. I still had to protect brand new
asphalt shingle roofs if they were at all warm.

To answer your question August - they have replaceable foam soles that come in
different densities. I know of nothing more forgiving than foam. There’s
another brand that sells a strap on overshoe which uses the same principle -
velcro bottom with different foam soles. I have a pair of

Have you found that these special shoes will protect the roof when it is
hot out? It seems like they are touting the good grip on their website, but
not necessarily that they protect the roof.

Hi James -
That's interesting to hear about newer model shingles staying softer. We
work solely in the San Francisco Bay Area where heat isn't typically a big
problem, yet we still run into soft composition shingle issues on warmer
days, especially on new roofs. We use scraps of old carpet cut
Hi Folks,
We're getting a lot of installations on new roofs these days and our old trick
of using a soaker hose to keep the roof cool to avoid shingle damage isn't
working anymore. The shingles get soft and walking on them damages them. I hear
the newer shingles have a polymer that keeps them
