Re: [RE-wrenches] Pentair Pump power

2020-09-23 Thread Dave Angelini Offgrid Solar
The constant pressure pump types often do not need a big expansion tank. I
did a test on Grundfos and counted cycles with the small pressure tank and
the large. The large tank cut cycles by 1/3. They really are not cycles
like a pressure switch system because of variable speeds.

I have even used a pressure switch on a constant pressure variable speed
pump to reduce cycles at night for an offgrid restaurant. It does work.

Big tanks save big bucks. If you have one, use it!

3 years in service now & no service required or needed. I installed a large
-120 gallon well expansion tank as usual [Typ off grid thinking -- reduce the #
of start surge] & found out it was not necessary. The start up is so tapered
smooth that I could have used a 40 gal tank, when I spec another OG system I
will not use an oversized storage tank. Ghost load on the controller [super
smart, digital & always awake] is very slight. The controller uses a transducer
not a pressure switch measures PSI in tenths of a PSI. I have not tried to
measure the controller load asleep, as it is hard wired in.

My experience with the Pentair variable speed pool pumps is that they start
full speed and then slow, which is exactly what you don't want. The well
pumps may be different.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Pentair Pump power

2020-09-22 Thread frenergy
Just curious, the 120VAC 1/2 HP submersible that has to date been in the
well for the last 17 years has needed zero service, is there something
about the Pentair set-up you're referring to that needs regular or
occasional service?  Believe me I understand your comment about
schlepping service to some other poor soul, but

Is the Pentair powered with 240 Vac inverter power?

Even better my local well pump installer sells & services it so I do not have
to! Getting a little smarter as I get older.

Wrenchers,

We're upgrading an off-grid water system. Dynamic head while
pumping at 20 GPM is 150 ft from water level to wellhead and then its 85 ft
vertical to storage tank so 235 ft total head to open discharge. We would like
to get most of that 20 GPM, we need to know if there is personal experience
with starting a 1.5 or 2 HP, 240 vac, 2 wire submersible pump against that kind
of head with an Outback Flex
Power2 (2 X VFXR3648A-01 inverters).

The FP2 will also be powering standard off-grid loads. There is
plenty of battery behind the inverters. If a soft-start solution is required,
some specifics would be great. Grundfos doesn't seem to have an option for
these requirements, solar-direct is not an option at this location.

Thanks,

Bill
