Want to make your day a Green Day? Okay, you could run out and
purchase a CD by the band Green Day, but you can only listen to
one CD for so long and it won't provide added benefits like
cleaner air in your home and a beautiful home decorating element.
To keep the beauty of green in your life, why not add a lovely
green or flowering plant to your home décor?

Now, for a florist, choosing the right healthy plant for your
home seems pretty easy. But, I know that there are many people
out there who feel they have a brown thumb. For them, the
thought of picking a plant that will work well in the space they
have available and then caring for it to keep it looking gorgeous
and green can be positively frightening. The easiest way to
ensure you're choosing a healthy plant is to visit your florist
and ask for help. However, if you choose to strike out on your
own and find the green plant of your dreams, there are some
things you should look for:

 * Look for signs of insects. If the plant is infested with bugs,
you probably don't want to bring it into your house. And,
since the insects are probably living off the plant, it may
die quickly or develop an unhealthy appearance such as brown
spots or holes in the leaves. Look at stems, leaves, and the
undersides of leaves. Don't forget to check the potting soil
   for insects as well.

 * Avoid plants that show symptoms of disease. If leaves appear
yellow, brown, or crunchy, leave the plant on the shelf. Look
also for brown spots on leaves and stems. Look for plants
that are full, sturdy, and have an overall healthy color and
   appearance.

 * Don't buy plants whose leaves are too shiny or that have been
extensively pruned. Leaves that have an unnaturally shiny
appearance have been treated with a chemical to make them
appear more lustrous. This could be masking signs of disease
and may lead to ill health of the plant as the chemicals sink
in. Also, if the plant appears to have been pruned to a high
degree, it's probably not very healthy. Store employees may
have clipped off leaves and stems that showed disease.

 * Buy plants that show evidence of new growth. If the plant is
a flowering plant, choose one with a few opened flowers and
lots of new buds. If you purchase one that is already heavily
flowered, it's blooming period may be nearing the end of the
cycle and you won't have the opportunity to enjoy the flowers
for very long. New buds and leaves show that the plant is
   healthy and growing.

Of course, choosing a healthy plan won't be the only key to your
plant growing success. You'll also need to choose plants that are
best suited to the light available in your home and understand
how to provide the best care for the plant. That's why I
recommend that novice plant owners seek the assistance of their
local florist who will be able to choose plants that will grow
well, are easy to care for, and will be able to provide some
information about how often to feed and water the plant. And,
they're always just a phone call away if questions

The tradition of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers has
been in existence since the time of the Civil War. Historical
evidence shows that women living in the South honored soldiers
by placing some sort of decorative items on their graves, as is
indicated by the 1867 hymn by Nella L. Sweet titled Kneel Where
Our Loves are Sleeping and is dedicated to the ladies of the
South who are decorating the graves of the Confederate dead.
Though it's not clear what the decorations were, we can
reasonably assume they placed flowers on the grave as we do
today. Such honoring of the dead inspired a day of remembrance
that we call Memorial Day, which extends our appreciation and
admiration to all soldiers who died in the service of their
country since the time of the Civil War.

Memorial Day is often a busy day for florists because so many
people recognize the tribute that a beautiful bouquet or
arrangement of flowers pays to those who have passed in times of
war. When you plan to order flowers for a loved one's grave, it's
a good idea to call a few weeks in advance to place the order.
This will ensure that your florist will have the amount and types
of flowers you'd like to include on hand. You'll need to indicate
that the flowers are for placement in a cemetery and that they
are for Memorial Day. Your florist will be able to create an
appropriate arrangement that can be easily placed on a grave and
withstand outdoor conditions for a reasonable amount of time.

Memorial Day arrangements often use flowers that are red, white,
and blue to commemorate the service the person has given to our
country. Carnations are a popular choice because they are long
lasting and available in the proper colors. However, your
Memorial Day flowers don't have to be limited to red, white, and
blue or to the common graveside wreath. You can order the fallen
soldier's favorite flower and simply tuck in a small flag to
signify the arrangement is for Memorial Day. Or, you can order a
beautiful bouquet of spring flowers and ask that they be bound
with ribbons in our country's colors. Your florist may even carry
ribbons with special script on them for Memorial Day.

If you're hesitant to place fresh flowers on the grave because
you won't be available to remove them when they fade, ask your
florist to create a silk arrangement. Although florists work
chiefly with fresh flowers, many create beautiful artificial
flower arrangements as well. Using artificial flowers will allow
the arrangement to remain beautiful until you or someone else can
return to retrieve them.

Sometimes life is so busy that it seems almost impossible to keep
up on the special events in the lives of our loved ones and to
ensure they always receive a beautiful and personal gift. But,
if you enlist some help from your local florist, no matter how
complicated life gets, you can be sure that you'll always have
the perfect gift for every occasion.

Many florists offer a reminder service to let you know when a
special occasion, like a birthday or anniversary is coming up.
Talk to your florist and ask how you can enroll in this service.
Often there is no charge involved and you're not obligated to
purchase flowers for every occasion you're reminded of.

Get to know your florist so you feel comfortable talking about
what's coming up and what you'd like to send. Your florist may
track the flowers you send for each event as a part of the
reminder service so that you don't send the same arrangement
twice and to help you remember which gifts had the greatest
impact. Tracking flower purchases will also help your florist
to make appropriate suggestions based on the likes and dislikes
of those who are receiving them as well as your purchasing
preferences.

When you enroll in a reminder service, your florist may ask you
to answer some questions regarding those people you place on your
list to receive flowers. Questions might include:

 * What colors does the person like most?

 * What colors does he/she like the least?

 * Are there any flowers or colors that should never be used?

 * What are the person's hobbies or interests? (This can help
your florist come up with unique gift ideas, such as an
arrangement in an old football for a sports fan.)

 * What type of personality does he/she have? (This helps
determine style preferences. For example, someone who
is very outdoorsy is likely to appreciate flowers with
a more natural feel using seasonal grasses and twigs as
   accents.)

If your florist doesn't offer this service, you can be sure to
never miss an event by taking the time to constantly update your
calendar with new events. Check your calendar at the beginning of
every month so you're aware of what's coming. You can order
flowers weeks in advance and have them delivered on the desired
date, so it's possible to take care of all your gifts for the
month with just one phone call-no magic needed!

You need to send a really outstanding gift to someone special in
your life. You rack your brain and try to come up with something
that will say what you're feeling, strike a personal chord, and
be a fun gift that the recipient will really enjoy. Your special
someone's passion is Nascar racing, but a shirt, hat, or other
memorabilia alone seems so overdone. What can you do? Try
presenting that Nascar gift with a new and exciting twist-send
it with flowers.

Flowers are an exceptionally versatile gift that brings a smile
to the face of anyone who receives them. The smile power of
flowers has actually been proven in a study conducted at Rutgers
University, the State University of New Jersey. The study showed
that people who received flowers exhibited more authentic smiles
than those who received other items as gifts. If that's the case,
certainly if you combine beautiful flowers with a theme that you
know the recipient loves, your gift will have a huge impact and
make a lasting impression.

It might seem like Nascar and flowers are two things that just
can't mix, but that's not true at all. Flowers have the unique
ability to say anything you want them to and an artfully designed
flower arrangement can incorporate any theme or item. Talk to
your florist about what you'd like to achieve with your
arrangement. Don't be afraid to discuss your ideas and needs-your
florist is a professional and will have some great ideas to take
your creativity to the next level.

To get you started, here are some Nascar themed flower ideas:

 * Have your florist create an arrangement using the colors of
the car driven by the recipient's favorite Nascar driver.

 * Tuck checkered flags or pennants into the arrangement.

 * Include a toy replica of a Nascar automobile.

 * Have the arrangement designed in a Nascar mug or other Nascar
   container.

 * Create a basket of Nascar goodies and flowers. Place Nascar
items (cups, hats, cars, shirts, etc.) in one side of a basket
and have your florist create an arrangement in the other side.

 * Tuck tickets to the next big race into the arrangement.

You'll need to supply some or all of the Nascar themed items to
your florist, but regardless of what the item is that you bring
in, your florist is sure to have some great ideas for how to use
it as a part of a stunning arrangement that will keep your Nascar
fan talking for years.

If Pamela Anderson were to buy flowers for herself, what kind of
arrangement would she choose? Would she pick bold, bright colors
arranged in a linear design? Or, would she choose soft pastels in
a loose bouquet? Regardless of the kinds of flowers and designs
she chose, the resulting arrangement would say a lot about her
personality. That's because people with certain personality
traits are generally drawn to certain styles of flowers.

One of the best things about flowers is that they can become very
personalized gifts if you just take into consideration the
personality of the individual who will receive them. Everyone
enjoys getting gifts, but the truth is that some gifts mean so
much more than others. The gifts we remember the most are the
ones that really wow us with their thoughtfulness and
reflection of how well the giver knows us. That doesn't seem to
be any mystery to any of us. In fact, a recent survey
commissioned by the Society of American Florists indicates that
when most Americans buy gifts, they place a high priority on
picking gifts that are specific to the personality of the
recipient.

When choosing a gift of flowers, think about what the person who
will receive them is like. Consider his or her favorite colors,
flowers, and hobbies. Think, too, about what you want the flowers
to say. Discuss this information with your florist who will help
you choose just the right flowers to match the recipient's
floral signature.

A floral signature is, simply, the types of floral arrangements a
person might choose for him or herself. The signature takes into
consideration color, style, flower choices, and accents. Floral
signatures include:

* Natural: People with a casual lifestyle who like the outdoors
and tend to be more earthy fall under this signature. They are
often drawn to flowering or green plants, but also enjoy meadow
flowers or arrangements using woodsy accents, like twigs or
leaves.

* Romantic: The romantic signature is best suited to spontaneous
people with a generous nature who are prone to extravagance.
Floral arrangements for this signature use soft colors with a bit
of fragrance. Accents include lace and ribbons.

* Expressive: People with an expressive floral signature spend
time looking to better themselves and tend to like unconventional
things. Flowers used here are exotic and have unusual coloring.
They are arranged in unique shapes with an artistic feel.

* Traditional: Those with a traditional floral signature are
trustworthy and hold their families in high regard. They like
things with a classical style. They like flower arrangements that
use many different kinds of flowers and are very lush.

* Contemporary: The contemporary floral signature is perfect for
people who like to set the pace. They are often responsible for
starting new trends and like to live in the now. Contemporary
flower arrangements often use just one color or use large
brightly colored blooms.

If you have difficulty deciding which of these floral signatures
suits someone in your life, ask your florist for help. He or she
will be able to ask you some specific questions that will help
you to make

Decorating Christina Aguilera's House With Flowers

Having recently married, Christina Aguilera, like many newlyweds,
is probably working on setting up and decorating her house to
make it more of a home. Flowers are an excellent way to brighten
up any room in the house, and new trends in decorating with
flowers emerge every day.

When you or guests enter your home, you want the first space in
your home to bring a feeling of welcome and set the tone for the
rest of the house. Your entranceway gives the first impression of
your home. If you don't have an entryway space inside your front
door before you enter other rooms, use flowers outside the door.
Try hanging a wreath on your front door-grapevine or straw will
work well. Attach small vases to the wreath and place fresh cut
flowers in them. If you do have an entranceway space, you might
display a favorite piece of artwork and use flowers to help draw
eyes to it. If the piece is a sculpture placed on a pedestal,
you could drape the pedestal with flowers. Or, for a warmer,
friendlier feeling, set a basket of fresh flowers on a table.

In many homes, the kitchen is the gathering place. Flowers can be
used in any number of creative ways to brighten up your kitchen.
Try placing small clay pots in a windowsill and fill them with
plant varieties that love the sun. You might even grow your own
herbs, which can be a delightful decoration while being useful as
well. If your kitchen is the cozy, old-fashioned kind, flowers
will look great in antique water pitchers or teapots.

Keep your bedroom and guest bedroom smelling deliciously fresh
using fragrant flowers like lilacs, tea roses, lilies, peonies,
or freesias. If you happen to grow them in your own yard, snip a
few and place them in a bud vase on the dresser or bedside table.
These flower varieties are also available from your local
florist. If you prefer to use a less fragrant flower variety, you
can still keep the room smelling fresh by placing a bud vase down
inside a clear glass bowl filled with potpourri.

Your living room or family room can be made either warmer or
brighter, depending on the colors and styles of flowers you use.
If you'd like to brighten up your living room during the summer
and you have a fireplace, consider placing a large arrangement in
the hearth. You can carry that feeling to other areas of the room
by using the same flower varieties in smaller vases placed on end
tables or shelves. For a warming effect, float a few large
blooms, such as those from a gardenia or gerbera daisy, in a
crystal bowl with floating candles.

Regardless of the room, flowers can be used to achieve any look
you like. If you're at a loss for how you can use flowers in your
home, take photographs of the spaces in your home where you'd like
to add flowers and ask your florist for help. Your home can be even
more beautiful than it is now-even if you don't live in a mansion
the likes of Christina Aguilera's.

Anna Kournikova may be able to serve up a tennis ball, but can
she throw a party that keeps people talking and waiting for the
next one? Well, maybe, especially if she's adding special touches
to her parties using flowers.

Flowers are a simple and inexpensive way to make your parties
beautiful, exciting, and the talk of your neighborhood. Of course
there are the traditional ways to use flowers, like arrangements
in vases and baskets or floral centerpieces, but there are also
endless possibilities for other uses. Your florist can help you
create any of the following floral party decorations:

* Punch up your punch: An ice ring is always lovely in a punch
bowl, but imagine how much better it will be if there are
brightly colored blooms frozen into it. Make certain you use
washed, edible flowers; your florist can help you choose them.

* Make your napkin rings into party favors: You can either ask
your florist to make napkin rings from flowers, or you can buy a
few extra flowers to match your center pieces and tuck them into
folded napkins or napkin rings. You'll want to make certain you
keep the flowers in some water until just before your guests
arrive. You should also consult your florist to determine which
blooms will work the best.

* Make candles even brighter: Set your votive holders on a bed of
petals. If you're using candlesticks, tie ribbons around them and
tuck in a few blooms. Or, place large blooms in bowls with
floating candles.

* Pretty place cards: Your place cards can double as party
favors. Place a small vase at each setting with a single bloom in
it. Attach the place card to the vase using a ribbon, glue it
directly to the vase, or tuck the card into the blossom.

To make certain your flower decorations are as fresh and
beautiful as possible, ask to have them delivered the day of the
party. If they must be delivered the day before, store them in a
cool place-but not one that will reach below 35 degrees. Avoid
drafts and direct sunlight. Make sure your flowers are not stored
near fruit. Fruit emits ethylene gas, which can make your flowers
wilt. Mist the flowers before storing them and cover them lightly
with a thin piece of plastic. A bag from your dry cleaner will
work perfectly for this purpose.

Your florist can be a real asset in planning your party. Make
sure you talk to him or her about what the occasion is and the
atmosphere you're going for. Your florist is certain to be full
of excellent ideas like the ones above, and may even have a few
more.

Scented Flowers Make A Mariah Carey Style Comeback

Singer Mariah Carey all but disappeared from the music scene only
to return a bigger star than ever in late 2005. But, in terms of
comebacks, fragrant flowers just may make an even bigger
comeback.

In the past, flowers were frequently valued for their heady
scents. They were used to woo a lover, mask scents that were less
than desirable, and create expensive perfumes. Their fragrance
has been described in great literary works by notable authors
like Shakespeare. But, over time, the fragrance of flowers faded
and how a flower smelled became much less important than how it
looked.

Flowers have been crossbred to create bigger, brighter, and
longer lasting blooms with great commercial appeal. Typically,
when people call their florist to order flowers they are most
concerned with how long the arrangement will last and choosing
those flower varieties that will stay fresher longer. That's
perfectly understandable. When you spend your hard earned money
on a gift for a family member or friend, you want them to be able
to enjoy that gift for as long as possible. For that reason,
flower breeders have toiled to create hybrids that live for long
periods of time when cut and placed in a vase or arrangement.

Recently, though, flower enthusiasts have begun to request
flowers with more fragrance to appeal not just to the eye, but
also to the nose. Perhaps that's because the human nose is
capable of discerning over 10,000 different scents. Lightly
scented flowers bring a breath of nature's laughter to a room.
Having foreseen a swing back toward a desire for scented flowers,
renowned English rose breeder David Austin, began crossbreeding
hybrid tea roses with their lovely colors and long-lasting blooms
with the Old Roses that existed prior to 1867 and were abundantly
fragrant. The result is a rose that has the best of both worlds -
a long lasting, beautiful bloom with a delightful scent.

David Austin's rose isn't the only flower with a lovely
fragrance. There are many other blooms that have retained their
fabulous scent, such as the lilac, hyacinth, and honeysuckle to
name just a few. If you're interested in ordering a flower
arrangement that delights not just the eyes, but also the nose,
contact your florist and ask for assistance. He or she can choose
blooms to match the colors and looks you want to achieve while
also providing a scent that is sure to please.

Actress and singer Lindsey Lohan recently took a tumble at a
friend's house causing a leg injury that landed her in the
hospital for a brief stay yet again. In fact, poor Lohan has been
in and out of the hospital so much throughout the end of 2005 and
the beginning of 2006 that she could surely use some get well
flowers.

Get well flowers are an excellent way to let someone who's
feeling under the weather know that you are thinking of them and
truly hope they have a speedy recovery-especially if you're
unable to make a personal visit. Flowers not only brighten up the
often monochromatic and dreary surroundings of a hospital room,
they're also a fantastic way to brighten up the spirits of the
person who's feeling sick or blue. In a recent study conducted by
Rutgers University, flowers were proven to trigger happy
feelings. Dr. Jeanette Haviland-Jones, who lead the study, said,
Common sense tells us that flowers make us happy. Now, science
shows that not only do flowers make us happier than we know, they
have strong positive effects on our emotional well being.

Flowers are as easy to order as they are beautiful. When you
order flowers to be delivered to the hospital, having some basic
information at hand can make your ordering experience even
easier. Make sure you have the following information gathered
prior to calling your florist:

 * The name of the hospital.

 * The patient's name.

 * The room number. However, if you don't now the room number,
the hospital staff will be able to look up the patient's name
to determine the room number at the time the flowers are
   delivered.

 * The date and approximate time you'd like the flowers to be
   delivered.

In addition to the basic information, it's probably also a good
idea to contact the hospital before ordering flowers to determine
if they have any special rules concerning flowers. For example,
flowers generally aren't allowed in the intensive care and urgent
care units. And, some hospitals have certain areas of the rooms
where they allow flowers to displayed; these display areas may
leave you with size limitations. Your florist should be familiar
with the policies of the local hospitals.

Get well flowers aren't just for people like Lindsey Lohan and
they're not just for the hospital. You can send them to anyone in
your life who is experiencing some illness or who is perhaps just
feeling blue. Feel free to send flowers to the home of a family
member or friend who's in need of an emotional boost-they're sure
to bring a smile and warm the recipient's heart.

The Rose: Christina Aguilera's Favorite Flower?
Copyright © 2006 Wesley Berry
Wesley Berry Flowers
http://www.800wesleys.com/

The rose has long been a favorite flower of many women, but is it
the favorite flower of Christina Aguilera? The truth is, I don't
know, but judging by the elaborate floral chuppah of brightly
colored orange, yellow, and burgundy roses conspicuously present
at her wedding and the thick bouquets of hot pink roses and rose
petals surrounding her wedding cake, it's a sure bet the rose
ranks high on Aguilera's list of favorite flowers.

What is it about the rose that makes it such a popular floral
choice and a powerful symbol of love, war, and politics? Perhaps
the answers lie in its long and varied history.

Fossils show that roses have existed for about 35 million years.
However, cultivation of the rose for gardening purposes began
about 5000 years ago in China. It didn't take long for their
popularity to spread, and during the Roman Empire, roses played a
significant role in the Roman society-but not just for their
beauty. Along with being admired as an ornamental piece, roses
were also used for food, medicine, and perfume. As a symbol, they
were used to honor heroes who would be showered with petals and
attend celebrations where the floor was carpeted in petals that
would release their fragrance each time a step was taken. Roses
became such an important part of the Roman culture that the
Romans invented the greenhouse specifically for growing roses.

China and Rome were not the only areas of the world to be touched
by the beauty of the rose. Roses also appear in ancient Hindu
stories. In these stories, Brahma, who created the world, debated
with Vishnu, who protected the world, about whether the lotus or
the rose was the more beautiful flower. Brahma argued that there
was no flower more exquisite than the lotus while Vishnu believed
the rose to be the most beauteous. Brahma, who had never seen a
rose before, conceded upon first seeing one and created a bride
for Vishnu using 108 large and 1,008 small rose petals.

Europe, too, fell under the spell of the beautiful rose. During
the seventeenth century, they were considered so valuable that
roses and rose water were used as legal tender. Josephine
Bonaparte, the wife of Napoleon, was so taken by the rose that
she developed an enormous collection of roses at an estate just
outside of Paris.

In America, roses are often associated with our own American
royalty-celebrities. In fact, there are numerous roses named
after American celebrities. Among them are the:

 * Marilyn Monroe: A gorgeous light apricot-colored rose that
   blooms well in hot weather.

 * Judy Garland: A sweetly yellow rose that blushes out to a
   hot orange and scarlet red.

 * Grace Allen: A delicately pink rose.

 * George Burns: A lively yellow rose striped with red.

 * Josephine Baker: A deep red rose with a soft fragrance.

 * Cary Grant: A stunning orange rose.

Whether or not the rose is among Christina Aguilera's favorite
flowers, it's clearly among the favorites of the world.

Madonna Writes About English Roses, But Does She Grow Them?
Copyright © 2006 Wesley Berry
Wesley Berry Flowers
http://www.800wesleys.com/

Considering that material girl Madonna has mad herself famous as
a trendsetter, it's actually very likely that she does indeed
grow English Roses. That's because, in terms of flowers, English
Roses are relatively new to the scene and aren't found in the
gardens of most people. In fact, English Roses weren't introduced
until around 1969 when roses grown by English rose breeder, David
Austin, first began to appear in the flower world.

Austin and other rose breeders developed the English Rose by
crossing Old Roses (roses that existed before 1867) and Modern
Roses (roses that came into existence after 1867) to achieve the
best qualities of both. Specifically, the goal was to create a
rose that:

 * Generated flowers shaped like Old Roses, like cupped and
   rosette-shaped.

 * Bloom more than once per year.

 * Occur in many colors, including yellows that are not common
   in Old Roses.

 * Have a strong fragrance.

The breeding was a success, and the result, sometimes called
Shrub Roses, is gaining popularity. In addition to the desirable
attributes mentioned above, English Roses can be planted as
single plants or in groupings to be used as overall landscape
plants. When they are used as landscape plants, it's a good idea
to plant them closely together to give a fuller appearance. Also,
an odd number of plants rather than an even number should be
planted to give the grouping a more natural look.

Another appeal of English Roses is that many varieties are
resistant to some of the diseases that are common in other roses.
However, they are less resistant when grown in close groupings or
in wet climates. Very wet climates may not, in fact, be the ideal
situation for English Roses. This is because they often grow very
large flowers that, when wet, become too heavy for the stems to
support resulting in a droopy plant.

Because English Roses have characteristics of both Old Roses and
Modern Roses, they may be pruned using techniques common to
either type. If you prefer to keep your rose bushes smaller, you
may choose to prune them back sharply every year. Or, if you want
more of an Old Rose feel, you may choose to prune them less and
allow them to take more of a shrub-like form, allowing the roses'
natural forms to take shape.

Clearly, if Madonna is interested in beautiful flower gardens and
with her recent tendencies toward all things English, she would
be inclined to not just write about English Roses, but also to
grow them.

Poker Night Fight? Send Flowers To Apologize

Your buddies were over last night for poker night. They were
noisy, stayed late, and left the place a mess. Your significant
other is not amused and you're in the doghouse. Need a quick way
to start smoothing things over? Send her flowers to let her know
how wonderful she is and how sorry you are.

In a recent survey of both men and women, when asked which gift
they most often give to apologize, a whopping 49 percent of
respondents chose flowers making them the number one ranked
apology gift-even over jewelry which received only 10 percent of
the vote. More importantly, flowers were also ranked the best I
Love You gift with 37 percent of the vote. Clearly flowers are a
fantastic way to say, I'm sorry.

So, how do you choose and order an apology gift of flowers for
your significant other? Well, it's much easier than you might
think. Here are some quick tips:

 * First and foremost, think of a way to personalize the gift.
A generic gift of flowers that doesn't take into consideration
her personality, likes, and dislikes isn't likely to help you
take even one step out of the doghouse. If she hates orchids,
she's going to be even angrier if you send her a bouquet of
them. However, if her absolute favorite flower is brightly
colored, enormous gerberas, a huge bouquet of them is sure
to bring at least a small smile to her face.

 * Write her a special note to go with the flowers. Let her
know that you appreciate her letting you have all the guys
over, or that you know you screwed up, and you hope she'll
forgive you. Whether you make it a heartfelt note or just
a clever and cute one really depends on just how angry she
is. If she's just mildly miffed about the mess in the
kitchen after poker night, try something like, I'll bet
none of my poker buddies knows I'm married to the Queen
   of Hearts-but I do!

 * Enlist your florist to help you with your mission. Florists
are experts in creating special arrangements to meet any
need, and they've heard it all! Tell your florist what the
flowers are for, provide a little information about the
recipient's likes, dislikes, favorite flowers, and favorite
colors, and let your florist do the rest.

 * Have the flowers delivered at a time that will be a surprise,
but that is also convenient. If you know your significant
other would be irritated by flowers delivered during the peak
time at work, communicate that to your florist and give him
or her a best time for the delivery.

The bottom line here is to really think about how your gift of
flowers can have the best impact on the situation. Make it a
personal gift that matches the situation, and make sure she knows
how important she is to you. Remember, flowers are a great I
Love You gift, so make sure yours say just that.

The Easter Lily: A Flower That Symbolizes Eternal Life And Purity

The Easter lily, a majestic white beauty in the shape of a
trumpet, heralds the coming of spring and the Easter holiday. It
is traditionally presented as an Easter gift and adorns the
altars of churches during the Christian holiday. This association
with Easter has its roots in the Bible where it is frequently
mentioned and has continued to be traditionally linked with Jesus
Christ and the Virgin Mary.

One of the most notable Biblical references to the lily is during
Christ's famed Sermon on the Mount where he states, Consider the
lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do
they spin, and yet...Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed
like one of these. It is also said that when Christ hung dying
on the cross, lilies sprang from the earth where his sweat fell
to the ground. It is, therefore, commonly seen as a symbol of the
hope of life eternal.

In its association with the Virgin Mary, the lily stands for
purity. One legend has it that three days after her burial,
Mary's tomb was found empty except for clusters of magnificent
white lilies. The lily frequently appears in early paintings of
Mary where the Angel Gabriel is shown presenting lilies to Mary
upon announcing that she will give birth to the Son of God. She
is also pictured with the baby Jesus receiving white lilies from
the saints.

Selecting and keeping a beautiful Easter lily is relatively easy.
After the Easter season, the flower can even be planted in your
garden to bloom year after year. Here are some tips for selecting
and caring for an Easter lily:

 * Look for a plant that is well balanced on all sides. The leaves
should be plentiful all the way from the potting soil to the
   flower.

 * Choose a lily with just a few open flowers and at least three
   buds.

 * Look for lilies that are not in protective plastic or mesh
sleeves. These should have been removed after shipping to
ensure the health of the plant.

 * Avoid waterlogged plants that may have root rot.

 * Place your lily in a window that receives bright but indirect
   sunlight.

 * Keep the lily in a cooler area and avoid direct dry heat from
   furnace vents, fireplaces, and appliances.

 * When the last flower has died and there is no more danger of
frost, you may transfer the lily to your flower garden. Dig
a 6-inch deep hole with enough room for the roots to spread.
Plant lilies 4 to 6 inches apart.

Sometimes superstars like Jessica Simpson seem so far removed
from our world that we forget they also enjoy some of the simpler
pleasures in life, like flowers. In fact, it would seem that
celebrities send flowers for many of the same occasions and
situations we regular folks do.

One occasion we know Jessica Simpson received flowers for was
as an apology for potentially hurtful remarks made in jest by
comedian George Lopez at this year's People's Choice Awards. The
awards took place just weeks after Jessica Simpson and Nick
Lachey announced their pending divorce to the world. Lopez, who
was apparently unaware that the awards show was Simpson's first
appearance since the announcement, made this crack during an
introduction: The producers want to apologize to Nick Lachey,
who could not be here because they didn't need any more seat
fillers. Simpson was visibly embarrassed and uncomfortable when
the joke was made. Lopez, who felt bad for making a joke at
Simpson's expense, did his best to make up for the faux pas by
sending Simpson a bouquet of flowers.

Flowers have universal appeal, regardless of our backgrounds,
careers, economic situation, or celebrity status. They play an
enormous part in our culture for all occasions from the birth of
a new baby through to the death of a loved one. They are a symbol
of love, caring, congratulations, support, gratitude, and, yes,
apology. They're available in every color under the sun and at
price ranges that are affordable to nearly everyone. And, they're
so easy to buy or order. A quick call to the florist can have a
gorgeous gift for any occasion on its way to your loved one in a
matter of a day, and often even less.

Because of their broad charm, flowers make an excellent gift for
those occasions where a gift is warranted, but you're not sure of
what to give. For example, if you're invited to your new boss's
house for dinner, you know you should bring a gift. Well, you
could opt for a bottle of wine, but are you certain your boss has
no issues with alcoholic beverages? A beautiful centerpiece is
sure to be appreciated, and I've never met anyone who has issues
with flowers. Or, perhaps you've been helped in some way by an
individual you don't know well but you'd like to let him or her
know just how much you appreciated the help. Again, flowers are
an excellent way to say, thank you.

So, you don't have to be Jessica Simpson to give or get flowers.
You simply have to be you with something to say and a desire to
brighten someone's day.

St. Patrick's Day Shamrocks Bring Luck O' The Irish To Flowers

You probably recognize the shamrock as a symbol of St. Patrick's
Day, so why not add a bit of that Irish luck to your St.
Patrick's Day flowers? Believe it or not, many florists do keep a
supply of shamrocks on hand to add to bouquets and arrangements
ordered for St. Patrick's Day. Well, at least they carry
something that passes for shamrocks... A closer look at the
shamrock and the legends surrounding it reveals that finding the
true shamrock requires more than just the luck brought by a
four-leaf clover.

The origin of the word shamrock is in the Irish word seamrog,
which means little clover. While it's a lovely name, it's not
particularly descriptive considering that there are numerous
kinds of clovers and even some plants that are recognized as
clovers by the general public, though botanically they are not.
Even the folks living in Ireland have some difficulty agreeing on
what a shamrock truly is. In a survey conducted by Tippitwitchet
Cottage at the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Dublin
showed that Irish believe the shamrock to be one of four plants:

 * 46 percent believe it is the lesser trefoil, or hop clover;

 * 35 percent say it's the white clover;

 * 7 percent think it's the black medick (which isn't a clover
at all, merely a clover-like plant); and,

 * 4 percent believe the shamrock is the red clover.

Why the division over what the shamrock really is? Well, that may
come from the legend of the shamrock itself. The story goes that
Saint Patrick used the shamrock as a visual aid to explaining the
Christian belief of the doctrine of the Trinity. Shamrocks have
three leaves united by one stalk, which Saint Patrick pointed out
during his lesson.

Now, you're probably scratching your head and thinking, Three
leaves? What about the 'lucky four-leaf clover'? Ah, that's
where things become even more confusing. Technically speaking, a
four-leaf clover cannot be a shamrock because of the very fact
that it has four leaves and doesn't conform to the definition
originated in the Saint Patrick legend. The idea of the lucky
four-leaf clover actually originates not through Christian
tradition, but through Pagan beliefs. Ancient Druids were said to
have propagated this belief because they held the four-leaf
clover as a Celtic charm against malevolent spirits.

Three leaf, four leaf, shamrock, clover-whatever the case may be,
shamrocks or what passes for them make a beautiful addition to
any St. Patrick's Day flower arrangement or bouquet. So, remember
to ask your florist to add the luck o' the Irish to your St.
Patrick's Day flowers!

Taking The Thorns Out Of Ordering Flowers: A Guide For Guys

Are you a man who believes flowers should only be sent on special
occasions and only to a woman you are madly in love with? Think
again! Flowers are an appropriate gift for any woman in your life
- mom, sister, friend, coworker, or any other woman you feel
warmly toward. And, women love to be surprised, so send flowers
any time of the year and for no reason at all. Best of all, you
don't have to spring for the really expensive flowers, because
women love to get mixed flowers just as much as they love roses.
Don't believe me? Take a look at the results of a survey
conducted by Bruskin/Golding Research for the Society of
American Florists (SAF):

 * 94% of women say flowers given as a surprise mean the most.
 * While 83% of women responded that they would most like to
receive flowers from a significant other, 34% would also
like flowers from their sons, 25% from a male friend, 23%
from their father, and 23% from a brother.
 * 62% of women stated they'd like to receive mixed flowers as
a surprise. Only 28% responded they'd rather have roses.

While that may clear up when and for whom you should send
flowers, it probably doesn't answer many of the other questions
you may have, like:

 * What do I order?
 * How do I order?
 * Will my girlfriend get the wrong idea?
 * Can I send flowers too often?

First of all, relax. Flowers are probably the easiest gift you
could ever buy. That's because you always have an expert to turn
to for advice-your florist! Even if you have absolutely no idea
what to get, a florist can help you choose the perfect
arrangement. All you'll need to do is tell them who they're for,
what occasion (if any), and a little about the personality of the
recipient. Your florist can walk you through the rest of the
decision making process, or you can simply leave the details up
to them.

When you call your florist, stop in to the shop, or order online,
be sure to have key information on hand, including recipient's
name, delivery address, telephone number, and method of payment.

If you're worried that sending flowers to a woman you've just
begun dating will give her the wrong idea, don't worry! Tell your
florist that the arrangement is for a new girlfriend and they can
help you pick the perfect arrangement to say You're special but
not I want to spend the rest of my life with you and only you!
Women know when a gift of flowers just means that you care.

Flowers are the gift that can be given for any occasion and they
never go out of style. I've been in the flower industry for many
years, and I've never heard anyone say, I'm sick of getting
flowers! So, send some flowers to your wife or girlfriend today.
But, don't forget your mom, sister, or female friend!
