Couldn't one simply begin one's command with
env HOME=/alternate/directory cmd args
? Unless one is worried about .cshrc files or so

The format shown in

allowed by the current standards. The standards say that entries in
crontab files are of three types:
1. Blank lines (i.e., spaces
