Keeping a CD-R/CD-RW in the tray
I thought I read somewhere where you should not leave your CD in your burner when not in use. Has anyone ever heard that? If so, what is the reason? Since I only use it for daily backup it would be much easier to just let the disk stay there. DLT autoloaders?
Can anyone recommend a good DLT autoloader to use with a Mac? I'm upgrading a server and need to increase backup capacity as well. I've been happy with DLT in general but need something bigger now. Have also considered buying a couple-or-three Ecrix VXA drives, which might be a cheaper solution. -- top of the world, Luke Jaeger, Technology Coordinator Disney Magazine Publishing Northampton, Massachusetts [EMAIL PROTECTED] Any opinions expressed in this message are my own and may not represent the opinions of Disney Publishing, etc etc etc. * -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hardware failures
Subject: Hardware failures From: "Marty James" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 12:44:25 +1100 Hi guys (and the girls to if there's any out there on this list!), I've been experiencing frequent but non-the-less erratic Hardware Failures over the last couple of months. I run about 75 clients (all macs) off a 7300/200, to a Sony DSS tape drive. I've been marking the tapes that come up with Hardware errors, to see if there's a pattern. Also, I've tried disconnecting EVERYTHING and letting the tape drive cool for like 8 hours. Also, I've been head cleaning almost twice a week. I can't seem to correlate my actions with any specific results...sometimes one of the options above will seem to help for a few days but then BOOM...Hardware Failure? Is this a buffer underrun proplem or something or is the media (Tapes) the problem? I ordered a new head cleaning tape and 10 new DSS tapes, but does anyone recognize this problem and if so, what do you recommend I do? Cheers Marty. -R-I-P---C-U-R-L- Marty James PC Specialist IT Departmente-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Rip Curl, office: +61 3 5261 0075 Torquay, Victoria, 3228 mobile: 0419 61 0075 Australia. fax: +61 3 5261 5432 --'the-surfing-company'-- Use of the RIP CURL trademarks by Rip Curl Pty. I had been using a Sony SDT-5200 and I couldn't never get the firmware updated so I "procured" a new HP DDS drive and it even can use the tapes where I use to get Media Error. I used to get Media errors all the time even with new tapes. I would use it once, do a full backup and the next time I ran an incremental it would forward to the end of the last full and give me a 206 Device trouble: 2-Backup Keenan Terry, error 206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.) Additional error information for device "Sony DAT" [0:2], Sense f0 00 03 00 00 00 29 12 00 00 00 00 3b 08 00 00 44 00 (SONY|SDT-5200|3.02) I also was getting these periodically which was being blamed on network problems: Bad backup set header found (0x0e00 at 532,480). Bad backup set header found (0x37313430 at 532,572). Bad backup set header found (0x1000 at 614,400). I had the drive repaired awhile ago but it never really was quite the same as new. I had hoped that updating the firmware would fix the problem but I needed a PC to do that with a SCSI card and when that combination was found they usually had problems accessing the drive anyway. It turns out I needed to upgrade to a previous firmware first and then go to the latest. Maybe if I have time later I'll look into this. Re: Update Retro Express Problem
Arnold, Make sure you're running the correct updater. There are two 4.2 updaters on the Dantz Updates page, one for Retrospect Desktop and Workgroup, and one for Retrospect Express. If you're sure you're using the correct 4.2 updater, please try reinstalling Retrospect Express from the original CD. Then, apply the updater again. If it still doesn't work, try downloading the updater again. If you have further questions, please call us directly. Re: DLT autoloaders?
We just purchased the HP SureStore DLT Autoloader 418 and we are very happy with it. I'm running it on an upgraded 8100, OS 8.6 You'll need the Advanced Driver Kit for it though. KC Can anyone recommend a good DLT autoloader to use with a Mac? I'm upgrading a server and need to increase backup capacity as well. Quick way to backup asap.
Hi, Is there a way to applescript the Retrospect control panel? What I need to do is to be able to simply run a script that would do the following manual items. Open Retrospect Control Panel Click on Preferences Click on Schedule Click on ASAP Close all down. This is a pain to do manually. Or am I missing something? Issue is that when I come in with my powerbook at 4pm on one day, by backup gets run. The next day I come in a 9am, but it doesn't get run until 4pm which may be too late. I need to run it when I come in each morning. Hi, Can you please check the size of you storage sets? Have a simelar problem wich drives me crazy. Same drive I suppose(sony) DDS 3/backup machine 6100/Retrospect 4.2/MacOS 9 Used new scsi cables, termination on or off, etc, the standard scsicheck procedure. I am getting hardware errors just after R4.2 is UPDATING the storage set. And in al those 'crashed' sessions the storage set is not larger than about 4 GB. Uncompressed there should be room on the tape for about 12GB.. I talked to Dantz. They advised me an upgrade to 4.2 (which I bought) SAME RESULTS!! (I compained about their advice) So what do I do now.. dont't laugh at me. I just split the to be backed up netword in two. So I use two DDS tapes, It works now as long as the siye doesn't exceed that 4 gb barrier, But more work for the system operator ! regards, huib -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives: Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
