Retrospect 5.15 for Windows Gotcha

2000-10-18 Thread Malcolm McLeary

Got me again!

Installed the 5.1.5 update today ... all my backups failed tonight with
insufficient privilege. :-(

I'm just watching the opening of the games on the idiot box and the email
messages started rolling in ...

Script "Qube - Backup Vol Common" finished with errors.
Error code "-1017" "insufficient permissions".

I've seen this before ... installed Restrospect 5.1 Updated and the
Retrospect Launcher forgot the account and password to use. Hence it can't
backup my SAMBA shares.

Is there a technical reason why the Retrospect Launcher services forgets the
account and password to use when the updater does its thing?

Was this a known issue which was documented in the release notes which I
should have read?

Ah ... fix it tomorrow.

Cheers, Malcolm

Mac Client Uptdate

Hi all,

If I embark on updating all the Mac clients over the network, do the Mac
clients need to be restarted, like the Windoz ones?

side note, from what I understand, your Mac backups will continue to run on
the old client. That won't you won't miss any backups if computers have not
been restarted.

RE: Mac Client Update

Unless I'm wrong, the Windows clients will restart the client
computer immediately after they are updated, whereas the Macintosh
 clients require a manual restart.

For fun and games, do a mass update of all your Windows clients
during the middle of the day, when the users are logged on working.
Laugh yourself silly behind the locked door bulletproof glass of
 your system's room.

Or, you could use the "no reboot" update and avoid all that messy blood and
stuff...

RE: Mac Client Uptdate

2000-10-18 Thread Thone, Bradley A (Sbcsi)

Ideally, I'd like to know what files get updated, where the files go, and
any changes made to the registry.

That way, I could update their client software (by copying files and
importing registry keys) when the user logs into my NT domain. Then, I just
stop and restart the Retrospect Client service and voila!

Or, I'd like a silent (minimized is OK) and unattended (user has no control)
installer/updater.

These ways, I don't tie up a server, trying to update workstations that may
or may not:
Be Powered On
Be On the Network
Even Exist

This is how I'm keeping McAfee VirusScan virus signatures AND software
up-to-date on my NT workstations. I test for the existence of some things.
If they're not there, then I do a complete unattended and silent install of
VirusScan, import registry entries to config the installation, and apply a
superdat (engine update and DAT update). All this is done silently, via my
logon script, while the user is logging on to the domain.

Hint, hint, hint.

Brad.

RE: Mac Client Uptdate - for Irena

2000-10-18 Thread James Keagan

I think what Irena was trying to say is that you must manually restart the
Mac clients before the change takes effect. The Windows clients have two
separate .rcu files: one that will automatically restart the computer and
one that requires a manual reboot. And correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't
the Windows client service completely stop until reboot, while the Mac
client can continue operating even if there has not been a reboot (it will
still be the same version, though)?

Re: Feature suggestion: missing member notification

2000-10-18 Thread Owen Watson

I totally disagree: even ignoring the multi-user aspect, can you
remember everything you've done over the last few years? Do you want
to? I want a clear indication that a backup set that I am restoring
from is incomplete.

Owen,

I understand your frustration here but it seems that you're asking
software developers to include notifications or "backdoors" or whatever
you want to call it to cover every possible situation that a user might
run in to. Plainly put, you're asking that this developer put in a
"feature" that will tell you if someone's been tinkering around in your
machine.
